The season is likely done in, but the Jays aren't going quietly! They used a big performance by Jim Clancy and a single big offensive inning to beat the Indians 5-1.

John Castino has now hit in 16 straight games.

WP - Jim Clancy (8-7)
LP - Mike Flanagan (11-17)

Record - 85-63

Detroit won their 11th in a row. The magic number is now 9.

This one hurt. Toronto came so close to tying the game in the 9th, but Jerome Thomson was thrown out trying to steal second and then Dale Ryan struck out to end the threat and give the Indians the 2-1 win.

WP - Dennis Eckersley (14-17)
Save - Jim Kern (23)
LP - Santo Alcala (7-2)

Record - 85-64

The Tigers finally lost, but the Jays loss still moved their magic number to 8.

John Castino was named player of the week! And no wonder as he hit .600 this week along with 2 homers and 13 RBI!

Toronto slipped to #5 in the weekly power rankings.

The players of the week were John Castino, Blue Jays and Cesar Cedeno, Astros.

Phil Niekro's knuckler was dancing all over the place today and the Blue Jays just couldn't square it up. The Red Sox won 5-2.

WP - Phil Niekro (12-19)
LP - Mark Foster (14-6)

Record - 85-65

The Tigers lost again but their magic number is down to 7.

The Jays let a tight game get away from them as a 9th inning homer by Jim Rice gave the Red Sox the 4-3 victory.

WP - Bob Glasso (2-1)
Save - Skip Lockwood (16)
LP - Bobby Castillo (4-5)

Record - 85-66

A Detroit win has their magic number down to 5.

The Blue Jays seem to have a little less drive since it became clear that they weren't going to make the play-offs. Today was no exception as the Red Sox won 5-2.

WP - Dave Tobik (3-6)
LP - Ed Whitson (14-8)

Record - 85-67

Another Tigers win and Toronto is now 7 out and Detroit has a magic number of 3.

Jim Clancy threw a 2-hit shut-out, blanking the Red Sox 4-0! John Castino went 3 for 4 with a homer and 3 RBI!

WP - Jim Clancy (9-7)
LP - Steve Carlton (9-21)

Record - 86-67

Detroit was idle so the magic number sits at 3 with 9 games left.

It would take a miracle.

The Blue Jays extended their undefeated streak against the Yankees to 8 games, as they stomped them 14-6.

Jerome Thomson led the way with a big 3-run homer but all 9 starters had at least 1 hit and all but one scored at least once.

WP - Rick Camp (6-0)
LP - Jerry Reuss (7-18)

Record - 87-67

Detroit lost. The Magic number is still 3.

For the first time this season, the Yankees beat the Blue Jays - it was close, 3-2.

WP - Wilbur Wood (7-12)
Save - Gene Garber (18)
LP - Mark Foster (14-7)

Record - 87-68

Detroit lost so the magic number is 2.

An early hour long rain delay made this a game about the bullpens and Dennis DeBarr logged 3 solid innings to keep the lead for Toronto. A spectacular 1-2-3 double play finished things off and gave the Jays the 6-4 win.

Jerome Thomson and Al Woods both went deep for the Jays.

WP - Dennis DeBarr (5-2)
Save - Mark Clear (31)
LP - Ray Burriss (9-11)

Record - 88-68

The Tigers lost again so the unlikely dream is still alive. Magic number of 2 with 6 games to play (5 for Detroit.)

Both starting pitchers went the distance but a John Howell 2-run homerun the 7th gave the Jays the edge and the 2-0 win.

WP - Ed Whitson (15-8)
LP - Steve Carlton (7-22)

Record - 89-68

However, the Tigers won. The magic number is 1. It would take an epic collapse by Detroit to give Toronto a chance.

The Blue Jays did their part to stave off elimination by beating the Red Sox 6-4. Dan Meyer went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI.

WP - Santo Alcala (8-2)
Save - Mark Clear (32)
LP - Phil Niekro (13-20)

Record - 90-68

Alas, it was not to be as the Detroit Tigers clinched the Al East win with an 11-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

If the Blue Jays were taking their ouster from playoff contention hard, you couldn't tell it by their play today as they beat the Red Sox in every aspect of the game, outscoring them 7-0.

Skip McBeath led the way, going 3 for 4 with a homerun and 2 RBI.

WP - Mark Foster (15-7)
LP - Phil Huffman (4-10)

Record - 91-68

In other news, Woodstock Stingrays (R) manager Mario Hernandez and pitching coach Robert Johnson both announced their retirement. As did Woodstock catcher Jim Pilgrim.

The Blue Jays continued their dominance of the New York Yankees with a 9-6 victory behind two homers by Biff Pocoroba and single shots by Matt Robinson and Dan Meyer.

WP - Mike Parrott (17-12)
Save - Mark Clear (33)

Jim Clancy took a perfect game into the 5th and a no-hitter into the 7th before shutting out the Yankees 2-0. Ron Guidry struck out 10 Jays but came out on the wrong end of this pitcher's duel.

WP - Jim Clancy (10-7)
LP - Ron Guidry (19-15)

Record - 93-68

The Blue Jays convinced Mario Hernandez to return, this time as the manager of the Stratford Storks.

Also, Jays trainer Terry Warren has signed an extension.

The New York Mets have clinched the NL East but both western divisions are coming down to the final day.

The Rangers are one up on the Royals in the AL and the Reds are one up on the Astros in the NL.

The Blue Jays finished off their 1979 season with a win over the Yankees, 2-1.

This season went remarkably better than anyone's wildest dreams.

WP - Ed Whitson (16-8)
Save - Mark Clear (34)
LP - Jerry Reuss (7-19)

Final Record - 94-68

The Reds and Rangers clinched on the last day of the season.
