BASEBALL MONTHLY World Series Edition 1897 Cleveland Foil Chicago Again One of the most storied seasons by a team has come to an appropriate end as the Cleveland Spiders won their second consecutive championships beating the Chicago Colts again in five games just as they did last year. The Spiders fought all season long and took the pennant on the last day of the season in a thrilling playoff win and carried their momentum through.
George Davis batted .400 in the series while Joe Corbett won two games. Veteran Charlie Ferguson closed out the series as the Spiders won it on their own field giving their fans the dynasty they have always been hoping for. For Chicago, the inability to win the "big one' has haunted them again. Critisism came down on manager Al Spalding as the started Al Orth only once in the series and opted instead to start Amos Rusie twice. Orth was a 22 game winner on the season and was the starter in the only Chicago win against Cleveland. Charlie Geggus who started game one and game four also couldnt get a win. All credit to the victors however, who are the kings of the game once again. Game 1 at West Side Park
WP: Joe Corbett LP: Charlie Geggus Joe Corbett pitched a great opening game striking out six and getting the Colts to hit into three double plays. Corbett allowed only one run and Roger Conner drove in two of the three runs for the Spiders in what was well pitched and played game. Game 2 at West Side Park
WP: Will Sawyer LP: Amos Rusie Will Sawyer was even better in game two in one of the best pitching efforts we have seen in a World Series game. Sawyer struck out six and was in complete control, the Colts hadnt been shutout all season. Bill Joyce hit a long home run to cap the win and the Spiders took complete control. Game 3 at League Park
WP: Al Orth LP: Will Sawyer Sawyer had alot less luck in this start as the Colts broke out 17 hits and ran away with an easy win. A five run third inning and a good effort by Al Orth never had Cleveland in this game. Rookie Fred Clarke scored two and drove in another two. Game 4 at League Park
WP: Joe Corbett LP: Charlie Geggus The best game of the series and a heartbreaker for the Colts. Chicago was up by 4 runs cruising behind Geggus who had a shutout into the 6th. The Spiders rallied and scored five straight runs including three in the bottom of the 8th with Roger Conner delivering the go ahead RBI single. Cleveland never gave in and won a crucial game as they seem to always do. Game 5 at League Park
WP: Charlie Ferguson LP: Amos Rusie The Spiders go to their most experianced arm to close things out. Cleveland scored five runs in the first two innings as Eddie Burke hit a two run home run. The Colts made five errors and didnt show the fight of a champion when they needed it. |

Anson won one MVP award in 1884 but was always considered among the best hitters in the game throughout his long career. "I played as long as I could, and then some." said Anson after his team dropped the 1897 World Series. "I want to thank this franchise, the fans, and everyone I played with through the years." |

BASEBALL MONTHLY December 1897 Hall Of Fame Class Of 97 Ross Barnes Third Base 1871-1892 .342.....1130 R....350 SB....330 2B...175 3B....942 RBI Ross Barnes was considered the first superstar of the game and the most consistent hitter of the first playing era. Barnes was part of the first real dominant team of baseball, the Boston Red Stockings. Ross won two World Championships in 1873 and 1874. Barnes was a career .342 hitter putting him fourth on the alltime hitting list. He was a master of the bunt and scored 1130 runs. Barnes was MVP of the league on three diffrent occassions. Barnes is the first position player ever to be elected to the new Hall of Fame. Cy Bentley Pitcher 1871-1892 326-282....938 K....23 SH....472 CG....2.34 ERA ![]() Sly Cy Bentley was also part of the dominant Bosoton team of the 1870's and became known as an inovator on the mound in his early career. Bentley won 326 games in his career including over 30 three diffrent times. His 2.34 career average is almost as impressive as his 472 complete games in days where bullpens did not exist. Bentley was pitcher of the year a record 8 times and had a stretch where no one wanted to face the right hander. Bentley had 23 shutouts and had a fine close to his career out of the bullpen. It was nice for Bentley and Ross Barnes to go into the Hall together as both are good friends and former teamates. Last edited by Nick Soulis; 06-19-2011 at 02:57 PM. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1898 They Are Now The Orphans Chicago Baseball saw a major transition after the final out of the 1897 World Series. The foreknown Colts of Chicago said farewell to their most prominant and popular player as Cap Anson called it a career. Anson of course was on the opening day roster for everyseason of the team's existance going back to 1871. With Anson gone, the media and fans began to know the Colts simply as the "Orphans" and the name has stuck as the team's official tag. "We have never known a day without him here so its definately a big change for all of us" said star outfielder Fred Clarke. The Orphans did spend much of the offseason looking to change their roster and put a team that has lost the last two World Series championships over the top. One name is expected to make all the diffrence: John McGraw "Mugsy" as he is known is both the most feared and respected player in the game. McGraw is known for his reckless play and competitive fire and was looking for a change after he and his mates just could not build a winner in Baltimore. McGraw is also a heck of a player with a .330 career average and 289 career steals. To be only 24 years old and be so highly regarded is saying alot in itself. "McGraw will help us continue our winning mentality and hopefully get us over the top." said manager Al Spalding. Along with MGraw outfielder Patsy Donovan has signed with the team this offseason. Donovan has also spent a good amount of his career in Baltimore and his a fine defender as well as a .304 career hitter. The Orphans showed their faith in the young Fred Clarke as they traded popular catcher Billy Earle this offseason to Cincinnati. Earle was traded for outfielder Joe Sullivan who at 28 is sure to make a nice impact to the team. --------------------------------------------------------------------- League News

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1898 Reserve Clause Takes Over Baseball There was no official announcement or evidence that something major changed in the national game this offseason. Still as the new season opened this month, word spread through the game that a new set of rules were created by the league owners that will have a huge impact of the game. It is being called the 'reserve clause" and the details of this new system of player movement in the league was hammered out by the league oweners this offseason after a number of meetings. Owners througout the game were worried about escalating players salaries and player movement in the offseason. It was clear that all the leverage was controlled by the players up to this point with the higest bidder getting the services of the best players. Uder this new clause, teams will not bid on other team's players per an agreement and allow that player only to negotiate and sign with the team he is currently playing for. Owners were said to take a solem oath to keep this pledge in place in order to keep player salaries under control. It was also said that such a clause will benefit fans as their favorite stars will stay in their cities playing ball for a long period of time building more of a fan loyalty. Player trades and waiver moves will still be part of the game, but owners have empored themselves to the point of almost owning their own players. Unserstandably player reaction was poor. Many players openly admitted that they did not understand the new clause. Still others that did claim that their rights as individuals have been restrained. Some player even claimed to take things to litigation or quit the game all together. Still with the Major League as the only strong por league in the game, options are indeed limited. It will be very interesting to see what happens as this clause is attempted to be put into place. There are many inside stories that have surfaced tp why such a clause really came to be. It is privately believed that the New York Giants, who have never won a pennant, were the most influencial proponent of the clause since they now have Honus Wagner on their roster. Wagner is one of the brigestest stars in the game and locking into New York in this way shoud give the team a huge advantage. Teams did take the fieldf as normal in this opening month as salaries for players are still quite high compared to other jobs or labor in the nation.

Cubs were actually started in 1870, and won the NABBP pennant before going to the NAPBBP and then didn't play at all in 1872 or 1873, but I like this anyway.

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1898 Orphans Bats Start Season Off And Running The Chicago franchise has always been one that has put togeter lineups that have stood at or near the top of the league in hitting. Names like Cap Anson and Sam Thompson have lead offenses to scores of runs and bases. As the new season completed its first month, the Orphans hitting lineup has gotten off to a torid start and has many wondering just how good they can get. The Orphans are surely one of the funnest teams to watch in the league as they have scored a leading 278 runs thus far this season. The team has an incredible .321 team average. As of May 1st in fact everyone in the Orphans starting lineup was batting over .300 and pitchers were having a nightmare getting these guys out. Things have gotten quite competitive to even get into this Chicago lineup as veteran start Sam Thompson has found himself in a platoon role with his .323 average. Big Sam made it known he wants to play everyday to manager Al Spalding as he knows at 38 years old he may not have many good atbats left. ![]() Hughie Jennings at the top of the lineup is the key to the offense as Hughie is batting .389 and seems to set the table everytime he is up there. The addition of John McGraw has also helped on many levels as he has worked wonders motivating the team and working so well with Jennings the the top of the order. The two players have combined for 63 runs and 42 steals in the the first month of the season! Chicago had a good month and finished n first place. A familar foe is back in the fold as the Boston Beaneaters look to get their glory back that they had three or four years ago. The entire National League is separated by only eight games.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- League Notes BOB BLACK WINS #350 ![]() Bob Black continues to be the anchor of the Boston Beanater team and it just seems like he has no intention of slowing down at the age of 35. Black has already won 11 games in the first month of the season including a shutout. The big number for Black however came on May 30th against Pittsburgh when he threw his 350th career win. Black is now third all time on the win list and just passed Al Spalding who had 348 wins. Black is a good bet to be the alltime leader by the time he calls it a career as he is throwing better or as good as ever. 400 may be a realistic goal for him. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1898 A Rivalry OF Arms For 8 Years vs ![]() Between them they have combined for over 600 major league wins and countless battles on the mound. In the history of the game few players have rivaled themselves more then Charlie Geggus and Bob Black. Ever since Geggus came into the National League in 1891, the two have faced off in important battles countless times. Both fierce competitors, their styles are similar and their respect established through the National League. Still the two stars of their craft have never shown much respect for eachother and in many terms and actions have proved to not get along. Geggus added to the fire when in 1891 he replaced Black in Chicago after he had not lived up to expectations in the city. Chicago embraced Geggus where as Black was almost run out of town for failing to win the big game. Geggus has won the pitcher of the year twice while Black has taken the award home three times. Black has the big edge on Geggus in the catagory that matters the most. Black has won four world championships while Geggus is still looking for his first. Geggus hopes that this season will tell a diffrent story. "He has stood in the way of everything I have tried to acomplish in my career" said Geggus about his rival, "No one in Chicago could get along with someone from Boston." With the Orphans having the better of things this season sitting in first place, the two rivals faced off in Chicago on the 28th of the month. Both players were at their best not allowing a run going into the 9th inning. Geggus has been at the top of his game this season going 11-6 with a 1.68 ERA. In the bottom of the 9th, Frank Chance came up and made the home fans happy by taking a Bob Black fast ball well over the left field wall for a walk off home run. The Orphans are having an excellent season with their offense still the best in the game having scored 466 runs already. Mr. Black and Mr. Geggus are sure to see eachother down the road again soon. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1898 Amatuer Draft Complete The Orphans took part in the annual amatuer draft of young talent across our great land. With the 16th pick in the draft the Chicago side chose right handed starter Jack Chesbro. Chesbro is 24 years old and comes to town from North Adams Mass. The right hander is known as Happy Jack and is another charasmatic figuire on a team that has the likes of Hughie Jennings and Frank Clark. Chesbro will start his career on the reserve team to improve his command. Scouts say that he has electric stuff and throws hard but getting things under control is his current challange. Chesbro is not expected to join the big club this season barring some kind of emergency. The top picks of the draft went like this: 1. Jimmy Barrett CF - Philadelphia Phillies 2. Noodles Hahn SP - Cincinnati Reds 3. Mike Donlin CF - Baltimore Orioles 4. Ray Thomas CF - Louisville Colonels 5. Jimmy Williams 3B - Detroit Tigers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- League Notes

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1898 In Dominant Season, Geggus Lost To Injury Just as the media and the fans were raving about the season Charlie Geggus was putting together for the Orphans (14-6, 1.52) the right hander went down with a season ending injury. The jinx was on for the Chicago starter as he tore a tendon on a finger in his pitching hand and will not pitch again this season. Geggus has already spent significant time out of action in his career missing all of the 1893 season with a shoulder problem. Geggus is on the tailend of a seven year contract and remains ths highest paid player on the team. "It just unfortunate for him with everything he has been through in his career" said manager Al Spalding, "he was really putting together an outstanding season on the mound." The Orphans had a even month at 12-12 but ended it on a disturbing note losing five games in a row and reducing their lead in the division to 5 games overthe hated Boston Beaneaters. The two biggest stars this season for the team have to be Fred Clark and Amos Rusie. Clark is batting .371 this season while leading the team and the league in RBI with 89. Rusie has won 23 games with two months to play and has established himself as one of the best pitchers in the game. Nig Cuppy, is the new man in the rotation and has a less then stellar 65-75 careeer record.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BLACK THROWS NO HITTER Bob Black continues another great season in a great career and this month the star pitcher did something he never did before. Many are calling the start pure magic as he held the St. Louis Browns to no hits on July 25th. Black threw the first no hitter in six seasons and walked only one batter in the effort. Even the walk was a close call in question and many thought that Black really should have had a perfect game. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1898 Count Em! 40 Straight For Keeler Willie Keeler has proven just how easy hitting can be when he puts a bat in his hand, unfortunately for the rest of us it isnt exactly so. Keeler and the season he has put togther in 1898 has proven to be indeed one of the most historic in all of baseball lore, and this past month Keeler broke one of the most popular and established records in the game. On August 24th Keeler stood at the plate against Louisville and on his second atbat slammed a double to right field to tie record of consecutive games with a hit set by George Davis of 38 games set in 1895. Keeler would recieve a standing ovation from the Washington crowd at Boundary Field. Keeler then tok his show to Chicago and faced the White Sox with a chance at history. Keeler beat out an infield hit in the 4th inning and the record was his. Keeler got this one with his speed which is one reason why he is such a great on base player. On the next night Wee Willie made it a clean 40 straight games and did so in his final at bat in the 9th inning when he singled to center after beiing 0-4. Keeler is the first player in baseball history to hit in 40 straight games and he isnt done yet. In an odd turn on events however Keeler wont be chasing game 41 for a while. In his game against the White Sox, Keeler fell on his elbow and lost much of his motion. The outfielder will be out for a few weeks with the bad elbow and wont pick up his hitting streak until mid September sometime. Even more important is the fact that his team, the Washington Senators are in the middle of a pennant race, something that has never happened in Washington before. The Senators are one game behind Boston going into the home stretch. Keeler's numbers this season are mind boggling. Wee Willie is batting .422 with 223 hits and 56 stolen bases. Keeler has upped his lifetime average to an inccredible .384. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Orphans Look To Close Things Out The Chicago Orphans are about one month away from their third straight pennant as they lead the second place Boston Beaneaters by 5.5 games. The Chicago offense is still the best in the league and stars like Fred Clarke who has driven in 114 runs this season while batting .367 is a big reason why. The major concern for Chicago really comes down to staying healthy for the postseason. With Charlie Geggus already done for the season and players like John McGraw spending significant time out of the lineup, health has been an issue. The goal is clear. "We dont just want to win a pennant this season" said manager Al Spalding, "everyone wont rest until we cross the finish line and are world champions." -----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1898 Third Straight Pennant For Chicago The Chicago Orphans completed their wire to wire run in the national league to win their 9th pennant and their third in a row. Chicago did this wiht the best offense in the league and overcoming the loss of their most famous player, Cap Anson. The Orphans are the rare team that is on top of the league both with the bats and with the gloves. Chicago had the best average in the league at .304 and scored 846 runs. The pitching however also had the best ERA in the league at 2.48 as well as holding their opposition to a .265 average. The Orphans however were not interested so much in numbers, but were on a mission to get back what had and complete the job they lost to Cleveland the past two seasons. "We are a little dispaointed that Cleveland wont be there to face us in the Series," said Hughie Jennings, "but no one in Chicago likes Boston very much either." The Oprpans will face off against the Boston Americans for the utlimate prize in the game. Chicago will do so however with some major players being absent, in fact the Orpahans may be without their best two players overall. The team already knew that starter Charlie Geggus was out for the season, and the right hander ended season tops in ERA anyway at 1.52. The bigger shock however came on the last weekend of the season in New York when Chicago lost their leader and best batter, Fred Clarke. Clarke lead the league in RBI with 122 and was batting .373 in the heart of the Chicago lineup. Still as Clarke went for a ball in the gap his knee gave out and he tore a tendon causing him to miss the remainder of the post season. Its a loss that will be hard to overcome but at this point Chicago has no choice. So many are saying that Chicago isnt as strong as they seem, and a third straight post season loss may be here. "It just makes things more interesting" says Frank Chance, "now things will be more competitive."
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Final Standings
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Heart Break All Around In Washington The Washington Senators came one game away from earning their first ever pennant and World Series birth, but a dog fight with rivals Boston came down to the last Sunday and things fell apart. Boston fought back in the month of September and the two teams went neck and neck until they met the Amercians in Washington for the last three games of the season. Going in the teams were tied an the Senators won the first game of the series on a 5-0 shutout by Walter Thornton. That game would be specially significant because it was the game that Willie Keeler's great batting streak came to an end, Keeler ended his magical hitting streak at 42 games. Wee Willie didnt really worry too much though because his team needed one more to win the pennant. In the second game Washington was winning 5-3 in the 7th inning but let the game get away. The Amercians scored 8 runs in the last three innings to win the game and force a one game decider on the season finale. On a fateful Sunday, twenty two game winnning pitcher Toad Ramsey showed his veteran guile and pitched a gem for Boston to beat Washignton and bring them the pennant by a score of 4-1. Willie Keeler had one of the best season's in baseball history beyond his record setting hitting streak. Keeler batted .419 with 230 hits, a record 195 of them singles. Keeler also stole 56 bases. Truly Keeler woud give it all back for one more win and a trip to the World Series. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY World Series Edition Boston Title Keep Chicago In Misery And Mystery The Boston Americans came all the way back in 1898 to win thier third World Championship and prove that a season is never over until the final out is thrown. The Americans came from behind in dramatic fashion to steal the pennant from the Washington Senators on the last day of the season and then finished the job in the Series for their third title in team history.
Boston remains the capatal of winning baseball having won more titles then any other ciity, between their two teams the city has won 8 titles. For Chicago there is even more disapointment as the team with the best record in the league lost the World Series for the third straight year, only the second team in history to lose the big one three seasons in a row. The Orphans are said to be once again stunned by the loss, something that the public isnt happy about as many are asking for a change at the top as manager Al Spalding hasnt proved he can win the big one. To the Chicago defense is the fact they were missing three of their very best players for the series. Charlie Geggus their star pitcher, Frank Clarke their star outfielder, and Reddy Mack their engine powered infielder were all out for the entire series. "We apologize to the fans" said Spaliding, "we did our very best but came up short again". Rumors still persist that Spalding may be stepping down. Series Review: Game 1 at West Side Park
WP: A. Rusie LP: D. Esper Boston makes five errors and the Orphans get off to the perfect start to overwhelm the Amercans. Hughie Jennings drives in two runs and Amos Rusie strikes out five while not allowing an earned run. Game 2 at West Side Park
WP: C. Seymour LP: A. Orth Four runs in the first two innings and Boston gave Cy Seymour all the help he would need. Seymour went the distance and allowed only one run as Al Orth of the Orphans settled down a bit too late. Boston only had six hits in the win. Game 3 at Huntington Avenue Grounds
WP: T. Ramsey LP: N. Cuppy Orphans starter Nip Cuppy leaves with an injury and the Americans dominate this game in front of their fans. Toad Ramsey pitches a shutout and strikes out nine as the Orphans score one run in two games and fall behind in this series. Game 4 at Hungtington Avenue Grounds
WP: J. Chesbro (1-0) LP: D. Esper The best game of the series thus far had a great finish. Russ Hall gave Chicago the lead in the 10th but with two out Pop Schriver tied the game with a double for Boston. WP: A. Orth LP: C. Seymour Chicago have a late rally and are in control of the series going back home. Down by a run in the 8th Sam Thompson singles with the bases loaded to score two. An insurance run is added later and a great start by Al Orth stands as Boston lose two of three at home. Game 6 at West Side Park
WP: Toad Ramsey LP: A. Rusie Its Toad Ramsey to the resue for Boston as the Americans score early and late to never really give the Orphans a chance. General Stafford drives in two runs and Ramsey pitches his second complete game of the series again striking out nine. The Series goes down to one game. Game 7 at West Side Park
WP: D. Esper LP: J. Chesbro Al Spalding goes with Jack Chesbro in the start and the game wasnt even close as Boston overan him. BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1899 Chicago Returns To Work With Same Goal The Reserve clause system made for a more calm and quiet winter and in many people's eyes much more stability. Teams could only deal with a minimum amount of free agents and trades to revamp their rosters. With this the new reality, good teams like the Chicago Orphans are more likely to stay near or at the top of the standings. All of that is however of little significance for the Orphans who lost their third straight championship last fall and have felt the constant pressure of getting over the hump and winning it all. A new manager in charge in the biggest change for the team. Gone is Hall of Fame personality and tactician Al Spalding as he did not renew his contract to come back for another year. Spalding leaves as one of the most successful manager's in all of baseball having won over 60% of his games, but his inability to win a championship lingered over his head. Many have said that Spalding left so that his sporting good buisiness would not suffer under the moniker of him being kn known as a loser. An original star of the franchise is the new man at the helm, and his name is not Cap Anson. Many thought Anson would be the choice to come back and manage the team that he starred for so long with. However it is Steve King that gets the call as the new man. King played 9 seasons with the old White Stockings and is a .300 career hitter with 119 stolen bases. King also won the MVP award in 1872 and won a championship with the Baltimore Orioles. "There will be no pressure" said King upon his appointment, "we will play our game and need to continue to believe that we will win becuase we deserve to." A huge part of things will be remaining healthy as Charlie Geggus and Fred Clarke are back and ready to compete again. The team also traded for 32 year old short stop Herman Long who brings among other things experiance in winning, Long won multiple championships with the Beaneaters. Chicago tries to become only the third team in history to win four pennants in a row. In other news long time infielder Germany Smith retires after not being able to fully recover from injury, Smith was a great infielder and a .243 career hitter. The Orpahans 1899 lineup:
