1909 Pittsburgh Pirates vs 1923 New York Yankees

1923 New York Yankees
Record: 98-54
Finish: Won World Series
Manager: Miller Huggins
Ball Park: Yankee Stadium
Runs scored: 823
Runs allowed: 622
Home runs: 105
Stolen bases: 69
Team AVG: .291
Team ERA: 3.62
Key Players: Babe Ruth OF (.393, 41, 131), Wally Pipp 1b (.304, 6, 108), Bob Muesel OF (.313, 9, 91)

The first real great Yankee team in their spanking new stadium make their appearance and ride the back of none other then Babe Ruth. Ruth may have had his best season in 1923 when he posted his highest average of his career flirting with .400. Lou Gehrig was a young man on the bench but was waiting in the wings for greatness. The teams pitching staff was young and a bit wild, but that could be said for all of Miller Huggins men that he steared to a championship.

1909 Pittsburgh Pirates
Record: 110-42
Finish: Won World Series over Detroit
Manager: Fred Clarke
Ball Park: Forbes Field
Runs scored: 699
Runs allowed: 447
Home runs: 25
Stolen bases: 185
Team AVG: .260
Team ERA: 2.07
Key Players: Honus Wagner SS (.339, 100 RBI 35 SB), Howie Camnitz SP (25-6, 1.62), Dots Miller 2b (.279, 87 RBI, 31 2b)

Another great star and his Championship side Honus Wagner meant everything to this team and to the league. This team did it all with pitching and defense while playing the best small ball of the ear. The Pirates and their incredible record are a testament to their team, the 2/07 team ERA speaks for itself and how it will do against the Babe and the Yank hitters will be enticing to watch. The series of great superstar legends and teams of the game awaits.

Pitching matchups
Game 1 at Forbes Field: Bullett Joe Bush (19-15, 3.43) vs Howie Camnitz (25-6, 1.62)
Game 2 at Forbes Field: Bob Shawkey (16-11, 3.51) vs Vic Willis (22-11, 2.24)
Game 3 at Yankee Stadium: Lefty Leifield (19-8, 2.37) vs Sad Sam Jones (21-8, 3.63)

Camnitz's Arm Earns Game One For Pirates

Forbes Field - Howie Camnitz has never heard of Babe Ruth. In the opening game of this five game series the right handed ace had all of his pitches working and held the 23 Yankees to only three hits. Camnitz pitched with a confidence in himself and his defense going the distance in a 6-1 09 Pirates win.

Tommy Leach doubled in the first run of the game as both starting pitchers came out with good stuff. Joe Bush allowed two runs in the first five innings but a Fred Hoffmann triple and score kept the game close but on this day the Yankees couldnt get a rally started. Bill Abstein in the 8th inning got the big insurance hit of the night with a line drive double that scored two men and put the game out of reach. The only thing remaining was for big Red Camnitz to close things out. With Honus Wagner and player/manager Fred Clarke cheering him on, Camitz would go the distance and allow only three hits in the win.

Ruth had one of the three hits but didnt really see anything he could drive. The Pirates showed why they are the favorites in this series and the ease with which they won this one has many wondering if the young Yankees could keep up, especially on the mental side of the game. Can the boys compete with the men?

Series Even Heading To Bronx

Forbes Field - Bob Shawkey watched his team struggle in game one of this series and knew the pressure was on him to deliver in this one. Shawkey is just the type of lad who wont let pressure get to him and showed his poise on this day.

Shawkey went eight innings allowing only one run and seven hits while striking out eight men. The game was indeed tight but the support was enough especially the two runs the Yankees scored in the ninth inning to complete a 4-1 victory to even this series.

Babe Ruth looked sharper at the plate as the Bambino doubled in the first run of the game. The run would stand until the 6th inning when Wally Pipp added to the lead wth a double to the gap of his own. Shawkey and the Yanks held on well and in the 7th off a Chief Wilson single Doc Miller tried to score with two men out but a perfect throw from Bob Muesel from left field got the man at the plate and the shutout stayed in place.

An error by Bill Apstein opened the door in the ninth for the Yanks to score two more as Vic Willis began to tire on the mound. Willis did have a good outing in truth and deserved better.

But this was Bob Shawkey's day and even though he lost his shutout late, his effort was exactly what New York needed. Shak even kept Honus Wagner without a hit in this one.

Off to the New Yankee stadium the series goes.

The Legend Of Babe Ruth

Yankee Stadium - A one and one count on Babe Ruth as he steps to the plate in the bottom of the 8th inning with two men on and his team trailing 4-2. Lefty Leifield wipes his brow and digs in, he cant walk him and load the bases, so he delivers. The sound could be heard all over the Bronk as Ruth hit the ball 446 feet almost out of the stadium and the 1923 Yankees steal the lead 5-4.

That is how game three of this best of five series was decided as the 09 Pittsburg Pirates thought they had a lead that would give them the edge and the road win. Honus Wagner and Tommy Leach gave the home team a two run lead in the very first inning and Leifield did his best to hold the lead. Aaron Ward did hit a two run home run in the 4th inning to bring the Yankees within one but a Jap Barbaue put the lead back up to two.

Ruth had been but hitless in the game until his dramatic atbat in the 8th when the young slugger saves his best for the dramatic. Ruth doesnt miss mistakes and the over cautious Leifield didnt make a good pitch. Sad Sam Jones on the mound for the Yankees seemed to be short on luck but he hung in for the full 9 innings despite allowing 14 Pirate hits. The tying run did make it to second base in the ninth but Tommy Leach popped out to Wally Pipp and the Yankees are a game away.

There is concern for the Pirates that such a hard loss has taken their heart out of it, the truth will be told in Game four when their backs will be against the wall. Maybe its time for the legend of Honus Wagner to show up right on time.

For New Yorkers there really is only one hero.

Pirates Too Good To Go Easy

Yankee Stadium - If anyone thought the 09 Pirates were a team that would be overwhelmed by the atmosphere and the situation they faced at Yankee Stadium in Game 4 were greatly mistaken. The Pirates bravely put together an impressive late inning comeback to even this series and send it to a deciding game five.

The Yankees went for the jugular in this one and were riding high following their dramatic win in Game three. Herb Pennock took the mound for the home team and looked in control from the opening pitch. The Yanks got three straight hits to open the first inning and ended up with two early runs. Leading 2-1, Ernie Johnson hit a solo home run in the third and Babe Ruth did it again hitting another towering shot to give the Yanks a clear 4-1 advantage.

Starter Nick Maddox was a bit battered but didnt quit. Honus Wagner gave him a pat on the backside and told him to hang in there. The 22 year old would settle down and the Yanks wouldnt score again on this day.

In the 7th Bill Epstein got a huge two out double that scored two runs down the left field line. The two runs made the game close again and the Pirates would tie it in the 8th. Again with two out Dots Miller lined a single to right and Ruth was late on a throw so the game was even. Two key errors contributed to a sloppy ninth for the home side who were reeling a bit and showing their age. The Pirates would score two in the ninth and 5 in three innings to go up 6-4.

The lead would hold up and now as many would have expected this series goes the distance of five games. Back to Forbes Field for what is sure to be a game for the ages where two champions will lay it all on the line to make their claim as the best.

Honus Wagner sent out a warning, "They made a mistake, they should have closed us out when they had the chance."

New York Better In The End

Forbes Field - Miller Huggins had his team report to the ballpark early and had them calm their nerves before they took the field in game 5 against the 09 Pirates. A full house anticipated a classic game but would have a letdown almost to hard to swallow as the Yankees made sure they ended this series with the advantage.

Joe Bush was much more determined in this game then we had seen in game one for he knew that his opponent Harry Camnitz wasnt going to be easy. Two pedestrian runs were scored in the first three innings to get the Yankees up before Chief Wilson got one back for the home team in the 4th inning.

So with one run seperating the two sides the two starting pitchers dug in and showed their good stuff. The game went into the latter stages still close and still tense. However the biggest moment for the series was soonto come.

A single and a walk in the 6th inning brought up catcher Fred Bootnose Hofmann who many thought would try and move the runners over. Huggins however knew that Hoffman would get something good to hit with two men already on. On an 0-2 pitch Hoffman did indeed swing away and took the ball 444 feet over the center field wall for the silencing three run home run to turn the game.

The Yankees would score two more in the seventh against Pirate reliever Charlie Wacker. The deficit would be just too much even for the Pirates to overcome and they sadly watched the series slip away. Joe Bush was jut a little too good on this day.

So one of the best teams ever is out of this competition as well as one of the best players ever in Honus Wagner. Many will look back to the Babe Ruth home run in game three as the key moment of this series as it put the young Yankees in control until the end. Another Yankee team moves on.

1971 Pittsburgh Pirates vs 1959 LA Dodgers

1959 LA Dodgers
Record: 88-68
Finish: Won world series over White Sox
Manager: Walter Alston
Ball Park: LA Coliseum
Runs scored: 705
Runs allowed: 670
Home runs: 148
Stolen bases: 84
Team AVG: .257
Team ERA: 3.79
Key players: Duke Snider RF (.308, 23 , 88), Gil Hodges 1b (.276, 25, 80), Don Drysdale SP (17-13, 3.46)

A team in transition in some ways put it together and won a World Championship despite not having the true super star in his prime. This Dodger team was deep and seemed to get the big play when they needed it the most. Playing in front of huge crowds the Dodgers relied on their young pitching arms and old hardened bats to win games. Not always pretty this Dodger team is often dismissed when discussing the greats, their 88 wins doesnt bowl anyone over. Still this team has some of the biggest names in franchise history, and the numbers say very little about they way they play the game.

1971 Pittsburgh Pirates
Record: 97-65
Finish: Won world series over Orioles
Manager: Danny Murtaugh
Ball Park: Three Rivers Stadium
Runs scored: 788
Runs allowed: 599
Home runs: 154
Stolen bases: 65
Team AVG: .274
Team ERA: 3.31
Key players: Roberto Clemente RF (.341, 13, 86), Willie Stargell LF (.295, 48, 125), Dock Ellis SP (19-9, 3.06)

A team that builds it legend even more as the years go by. This championship team led by one of the absolute greats in Roberto Clemente had it all. Stargell could drive in the big runs, Al Oliver could hit for average, Clemente could play defense like no other, and on the mound group of sound arms all fall into place. Danny Murtaugh and the city of Pittsburgh will always be proud of this team and putting them up against anyone to watch them play will mean nothing but hardnosed baseball the way it was meant to be played; even if it is on astro turf.

Pitching matchups
Game 1 at Three Rivers Stadium: Don Drysdale (17-13, 3.46) vs Dock Ellis (19-9, 3.06)
Game 2 at Three Rivers Stadium: Johnny Podres (14-9, 4.11) vs Steve Blass (15-8, 2.85)
Game 3 at LA Coliseum: Bob Johnson (9-10, 3.45) vs Sandy Koufax (8-6, 4.05)

Three Run 8th Inning Lifts Bucs To Win

Three Rivers Stadium - A very good opening night in this series as the 59 Dodgers and 71 Pirates fought back and forth before the Pirates put the game away and took the first step in this series.

The Dodgers are always confident when Don Drysdale and his bulldog mentality take the mound. The Pirates were ready however and Roberto Clemente and Al Oliver combined to drive in two runs for the lead in the very first inning. In the 3rd inning Oliver hit a hustle triple to extend the lead to three runs.

Dock Ellis was teetering in the early innings for the home team but didnt bend until the 5th and 6th innings. In the 6th Don Demeter tied the game with an RBI single as the Dodgers showcased their speed and small ball capabilities to even things up at 3-3.

The teams traded a run each and heading into the bottom of the 8th the game was still even and the Dodgers felt confident that maybe they could steal one on the road. Clem Labine came on in relief for Drysdale but didnt get the job done. Al Oliver slammed a home run off of him to give his team the lead. The Pirates would get another three hits and drive in a total of 3 runs in the inning to break the game open late. Dave Giusti had no problem closing out the ninth inning for the 7-4 win.

Al Oliver was the star of this game as he was hitting everything thrown at him. Oliver went 4-4 with two runs and drove in three runs. He was a double away from the cycle.

A good win for the Bucs as the atmosphere in Three Rivers Stadium was great and the team really plays its game on the artificial turf.

Pirates Take Full Control

Three Rivers Stadium - Shortstop Gene Alley is suppose to be a role player on this team but the role he played in game two of this series was one of hero as his three run home un in the 6th inning of this game was the key moment in the 6-5 Pirates win. The 1971 Pirates now take a commanding 2-0 lead as the series heads to California.

Don Demeter gave the Dodgers the lead in the third inning with a two out hit off Pirate starter Steve Blass. The visitors would add anothe run in the fourth and handed Johnny Podres a two run lead going forward.

What appeared to be a calm 6th inning came around for Podres who got the first two batters and looked in command. Great teams rally when you least expect them and Richie Hebner lined a single and was followed by Al Oliver who drew a walk. With the pitchers spot coming up Podres didnt have to give Alley anything good to hit. Surely that was the plan but location can be a tricky thing. Alley drove a 2-2 breaking ball well over the wall in left field and catcher Johnny Roseboro couldnt believe what his battery mate had thrown. These Pirates dont forgive nor miss mistakes.

Up one run the same part of the lineup put up two more insurance runs in the 8th this time against Art Fowler and the mountain for LA was even steeper. The Dodgers did put together a big two out rally in the 9th capped by a two run single by Duke Snider. But representing the tying run, pinch runner Don Zimmer was embarasingly picked off of first base to end the game.

Now the series is in the hands of young Sandy Koufax who will need to be at his best as the Dodgers try to stay alive in what will be a record crowd at the Coliseum for game 3.

Dodger Pride Stong Enough

LA Coliseum - Close to 100,000 fans were on hand as the Dodger aithful came out in full force to try and support their team in a win and keep them alive in this series. The 59 Dodgers fought hard and wrestled an 8-6 victory over the 71 Pirates who wont get a sweep.

Sandy Koufax took the mound for the Dodgers and although he doesnt have the best stuff the left hander stood in there and challanged the Pirate hitters.

The teams went back and forth for the first three innings including one home run for each side. The Pirates however held the early lead at 3-2 and hoped Bob Johnson had the touch on the mound to get a win, this game however was far from over. A big 4th inning headed by Duke Snider and Don Demeter scored two runs and the Dodgers thrilled their fans with their fight and took a one run lead.

After Dave Cash tied the game in the top of the 5th, the Dodgers again wasted no time and put three runs on the board powered by a Duke Snider two run double. The Duke was on fire in this one and wasnt going to let his side lose this game.

Willie Stargell smashed a two run home run to cut the lead to only one run but again Snider stepped up and hit a long home run of his own. Snider had 5 RBI's on the day and was the toast of Cali.

The Dodgers closed the game out as Art Fowler got the last out and the Dodgers live for another game. Many in the crowd could be seen holding "We Believe" signs as the series gets more interesting. The fight in both teams is obvious as well.

Dodgers Find A Way; Series Even

LA Coliseum - Some teams have character that wont let them quit and could care less what anyone thinks about them. The 59 Dodgers are such a side and in Game 4 of this series with the 71 Pirates they played with great characther to turn the game around and tie this series. The Dodgers used a 6 run eigth inning to overtake the Pirates and turn the momentum of the series that now heads back to Pittsburgh.

Roger Craig got off to a suspect start in the second inning putting his team behind by two runs in the second inning. The Pirates behind Luke Walker held the lead and the game became more tense as it moved along. Finally in the bottom of the 6th Dom Demeter looked Walker in the eye and lofted a 347 foot home run to tie the game. The Pirates were not done yet however.

Roberto Clemente reached on an error with the bases loaded and two out in the 7th and the go ahead run crossed the plate, again the Dodgers were up against it but with veteran players like Gil Hodges and Duke Snider.

Finally in the bottom of the 8th the home side not only came back but broke the game wide open. Five hits including a key 2 run double by Joe Pignatano overwhelmed and knocked Walker out of the game. After it was al said and done LA had scored six runs and the tired Pirates could hold no longer.

It now appears that this series has changed direction and that the Pirates may be letting things slip away. Regardless a great series moves to one single deciding game. The Dodgers try and do the improbable by winning three in a row after dropping the first two.

The Doctor is In; Pirates Win Series

Three Rivers Stadium - Don Drysdale and Dock Ellis matched eachother pitch by picth on the biggest stage as the deciding game of the series unfolded. Both teams showed so much getting to this point and for seven innings neither pitcher looked as if he was going to blink first.

Through it all however it was Dock Ellis that had the slight upperhand. While Drysdale was escaping out of jams the Dock was sailing through the Dodger lineup with conviction. Still until runs were scored in this one the fans on had could only hold their breath.

Al Oliver has been a real force so far in this series. To his suprize however in the 4th inning he was asked to lay down a sacrafice bunt with two men on. The bunt was too hard and the lead runner was eliminated and Oliver didnt get the job done as the Dodgers got out of the inning. Oliver however changed the game in the 7th inning. Breaking the scoreless tie Oliver led off the inning with a home run to right and Three Rivers Stadium came to life. The Pirates would score two more as Dave Cash and Manny Sanguillen drove in runs for a three run lead.

Dock Ellis needed nothing else. Ellis allowed only four runs on the night and not a single runner made it to third base. The 9th inning was wrapped up with ease and the Pirates celebrated.

The home team won everygame in a series that had it all and was entertaining in every way. Sometimes heroes come from the most unlikely of places and the Pirates had a number of them with Ellis being the brightest of them at the most crucial time.

Following Now

I see my 65 Twins moved on...can you do a recap of the winning teams to this point?

I have a question that I can't get answered in the new to the game section.

How can I import multiple seasons to form one league? For example:
1920
1940
1960
1980
2000

For a recap of the teams that advanced just go to page one of this thread and the opening post where I have listed the teams that have moved and who they beat, as well as current and upcoming series.

To import teams you need to do the following:
  • Make sure you are in commisioner mode
  • Go to League Options
  • Click Edit League Structure
  • Click Import Hist Team
  • From there choose the master file (master, csv) and choose comfirm and then a new menu will appear.
  • Enter the year you would like and reresh the teams.
  • Choose the team you would like
Thanks for following my thread!

1998 San Diego Padres vs 1945 Detroit Tigers

1945 Detroit Tigers
Record: 88-65
Finish: Won World Series over Cubs
Ball Park: Briggs Stadium
Manager: Steve O'Neill
Runs scored: 633
Runs allowed: 565
Home Runs: 77
Stolen bases: 60
Team AVG: .256
Team ERA: 2.99
Strikeouts: 588
Key players: Roy Cullenbine OF (.277, 18, 93), Hank Greenberg OF (.311, 13, 60), Hal Newhouser SP (25-9, 1.81, 212 K)

One of the most dominant seasons a pitcher can have was completed by Hal Newhouser as this Tiger team leaned on its pitching and experiance for the title. Dizzy Trout and Al Benson were also very dependable starters as the Tigers are able to throw solid arms from both sides of the mound at thier opposition. Hank Greenberg came back from the war still in fine form and Rudy York anchored a good infield. The Tigers did overwhelm their opponents, just found a consistent way of doing just enough to beat them.

1998 San Diego Padres
Record: 98-64
Finish: NL Pennant winners; lost to Yankees in World Series
Ball Park: Qualcomm Stadium
Manager: Bruce Bochy
Runs scored: 749
Runs allowed: 635
Home runs: 167
Stolen bases: 79
Team AVG: .253
Team ERA: 3.63
Strike outs: 1217
Key players: Greg Vaughn LF (.272, 50, 119), Tony Gwyn RF (.321, 16, 69), Trevor Hoffman CL (4-2, 1.48, 53 S)

With the most dominant closer in the league this Padres team got hot at the right time and stole the NL pennant from more favored teams before falling to the Yankees. Greg Vaughn had a monster year while Ken Caminiti and Wally Joyner did their part; an always reliable Tony Gwynn remained the classy leader of this team that never quit in any game. Kevin Brown is an intimidating force on the mound and the Padres did win at the heart of the steroid era, all the same the era and numbers count as part of the history of the game. Looking at the pitching matchup in game one is creating excitement.

Pitching matchups
Game 1 at Briggs Stadium: Kevin Brown (18-7, 2.38) vs Hal Newhouser (25-9, 1.81)
Game 2 at Briggs Stadium: Andy Ashby (17-9, 3.34) vs Dizzy Trout (18-15, 3.14)
Game 3 at Qualcomm Stadium: Al Benton (13-8, 2.02) vs Joey Hamilton (13-13, 4.27)

Look Of Intimidation

Briggs Stadium - There have been a number of hard throwing starters who have liked to intimidate on the mound, during the 1990's Kevin Brown was one of those men. Brown had such a feeling in game one of this best of five series as he took the mound for the 1998 Padres and led them to an opening shutout of the 1945 Tigers 2-0.

Hal Newhouser also had good stuff but it is impossible to win if your team cant score a single run for you. Newhouser in the end only surrendered five total hits and struck out ten men but still lost in the end. Wasting such a quality start will be a big regret for Steve Oneill and his men.

Brown struck out 10 in only eight innings himself and got all the help he needed. Andy Sheets doubled in Tony Gwynn in the second inning for the first run of the series and that scoreline stood all the way to the 8th. Big Ken Caminiti singled in a run with a close play at the plate to get the Padres an insurance run.

In the 9th Kevin Brown may have been able to finish but when you have a closer like Tervor Hoffman, Bruce Bochy didnt hesitate to make a move. Hoffman came on and made a two run lead look like it was ten. Jimmy Outlaw did double but the final out came soon enough and the Padres went up in the series.

"Our bats have to wakeup" said Hank Greenberg who went hitless against brown. Waking up is one thing, having no life what so ever is another.
