All Time Greatest Tourney - Infinity Style

There are 14 warriors in for the World Tourney berth from the Light Heavyweight division. The top 2 seeds, Henry Maske and Gustav Scholz will receive a 1st round bye.

Round 1:

Eric Schoeppner vs Hermann Lindner - Pure domination as Schoeppner cut Lindner early and reopened it often. Good cut work by Lindner allowed the fight to continue to the later rounds but it wasn't enough as the doctor finally halted it in the 11th for the TKO. Schoeppner was up 10-0 on all 3 cards as he landed over 53 punches per round to Lindner's less than 9 per round.

Thomas Ulrich vs Norbert Suehrig - Ulrich bored in with constant pressure throughout, and Suehrig wasn't able to avoid it as he was knocked out in the 7th round. Ulrich lead 6-0 on all 3 cards through 6.

Klaus Peter Gumpert vs Horst Benedens - Gumpert came in the 9-2 favorite but was losing every round when Benedens landed not one but 2 consecutive low blows in the 5th round to be disqualified and hand Gumpert the win!

Kai Kurzawa vs Haxhi Krasniqi - Knockdowns in the 8th and the fatal 11th were the hallmarks of Kurzawa's dominant performance against Krasniqi. The referee stopped the bout late in the 11th for the TKO when it was obvious that Krasniqi was out on his feet.

Lothar Stengel vs Gerhard Hecht - Stengel scored a knockdown in the 5th and built up a huge lead in the first 12 rounds, then survived 2 knockdowns in the 13th round and held off Hecht to force the decision. The judges scored it 10-5, 9-5, 10-4.

Adolf Heuser vs Willi Hoepner - Hoepner built up a small lead, and needed it when an accidental butt ended things in the 14th round to send it to the judges for the Technical Decision. They saw it 7-5, 7-5, 8-4 for Hoepner.

Quarter-Finals:

Henry Maske vs Willi Hoepner - Maske made Hoepner look silly throughout his workman like 10-4, 10-4, 8-4 decision to move into the Semi-Finals.

Gustav Scholz vs Klaus Peter Gumpert - Scholz was the dominant boxer in this one, though there was some very odd scoring in this 9-4, 10-3, 6-6 majority decision. Scholz outworked and out landed Gumpert by more than a 2-1 margin as his footwork and hand speed were clearly superior throughout.

Erich Schoeppner vs Kai Kurzawa - Schoeppner was a 5-2 favorite coming into the bout, but Kurzawa was the faster and stronger fighter throughout the early rounds. Those rounds were the only ones that mattered as Kurzawa was cut over the left eye due to a clash of heads that sent the fight to the scorecards in the 9th round. The judges scored the fight 4-3, 5-2, 6-1 for Kurzawa who pulls off the upset win!

Thomas Ulrich vs Lothar Stengel - Stengel came out strong with a wicked combination to start the first round that deposited Ulrich on the seat of his pants for a count of 9! Somehow Ulrich not only got up, he survived the round, then in the 2nd round scored not 1 but 2 knockdowns of his own! The 2nd knockdown was for the count handing Ulrich a thrilling 2nd round KO!

Semi-Finals:

Henry Maske vs Kai Kurzawa - Maske survived a flash knockdown in the 1st round and a slow start to score a late knockdown of his own on the way to a solid 10-4, 7-4, 9-5 decision.

Gustav Scholz vs Thomas Ulrich - Ulrich was knocked down in the first round, then fought well for the next 3 rounds. After several close hard to call rounds Scholz took control to win 8-5, 7-5, 9-5.

Final:

Henry Maske vs Gustav Scholz - In what was considered a toss-up bout, most pundits figured that Scholz would have an edge on fight night because Maske looked rather soft around the middle. Maske proved them wrong, getting his punches off and countering effectively as well throughout, then withstanding Scholz and his desperate attempts at a late miracle KO to force the decision 8-6, 11-4, 10-5. Maske earns the Light Heavyweight berth to the World Tournament where he has the potential to do well.

We have 7 Super Middleweights fighting for the berth. The top seed, Graciano Rocchigiani will recieve a bye.

Quarter-Finals:

Juergen Braehmer vs Danilo Haeussler - Braehmer scored a knockdown in the 1st round and was dominating the fight. Unfortunately his propensity for low blows caught up to him in the 7th round and he was disqualified, handing the win to Haeussler.

Markus Beyer vs Robert Stieglitz - In a barn burner of a fight Beyer scored a pair of knockdowns while Stieglitz scored one. It seemed to this ringside observer that Beyer was the victor, but it could have been scored either way. The judges scored it 8-5, 8-7, 11-4 for the winner Beyer!

Sven Ottke vs Mario Veit - A solid action bout between a pair of decent boxers gave us some odd scoring. This fight could have gone either way (I saw it as a draw, 7-7) but the judges scored it 8-7, 7-7 11-4 (was this judge in the same arena?) for the winner Veit.

Semi-Finals:

Graciano Rocchigiani vs Danilo Haeussler - Haeussler spent thr fight running from Rocchigiani, while Rocchigiani was unable to corner him at times. This made for a dull fight that Rocchigiani barely won 6-9, 9-6, 10-5 as there were many flip a coin rounds throughout the bout.

Markus Beyer vs Mario Veit - This fight had all the action that the Rocchigiani-Haeussler fight lacked. Veit scored the lone knockdown and kept the pressure on the faster and Beyer. Beyer used excellent flurries and counterpunches to keep things close as the 15th round ended. The judges scored it 9-6, 7-8, 8-7 for the 2-1 underdog Veit!

Final:

Graciano Rocchigiani vs Mario Veit - This one was a barn burner with Rocchigiani scoring a pair of knockdowns and out working the game Veit by over a 2-1 margin Rocchigiani threw nearly 100 punches per round landing 591 of them in this entertaining yet dominating 11-4, 10-5, 11-4 decision. Rocchigiani is expected to do well in the World Tournament.

There are 15 fighters entered in the Middleweight class. The top seeded Arthur Abraham will receive the 1st round bye.

Round 1:

Felix Sturm vs Stephan Trabant - Sturm fought the perfect defensive fight, punishing Trabant every time he got close then moving out. When Trabant did land, Sturm was quick with the counters. The fight went to the judges who scored it 8-7, 12-2, 13-1. How one judge scored it 8-7 is anyone's guess as the fight wasn't even close to that!

Jupp Elze vs Hans-Werner Wohlers - After a lackluster 1st round, Wohlers landed a low blow that incensed Elze who landed an amazing flurry of punches that planted Wohlers on his back for a 10 count!

Young Mahoney vs Heini Meinhardt - Entertaining slug-fest that had Mahoney down in the 9th, Meinhardt down 2 times in the 10th and once in the 14th en-route to a close 8-6, 9-5, 7-7 majority decision for Mahoney. Both men gave their all throughout!

Bert Schenk vs Peter Mueller - Despite being cut early, Schenk was dominating the fight when in the 11th round Schenk put Mueller down 3 times, the final one for the count! The judges had it 8-1, 9-1 and 8-2 through the 10th.

Sebastian Sylvester vs Max Resch - Sylvester scored a knockdown in the 1st round, then after a lackluster 2nd round Resch made it a fight as both men had a scintillating 3rd round. Sylvester came out in the 4th and scored an early knockdown that Resch couldn't recover from for the 4 KO!

Franz Szuzina vs Hans Stretz - Stretz seemingly built up a lead, then survived a knockdown in a huge 13th round for Szuzina before pulling out the 6-9, 9-5, 8-7 split decision.

Leo Starosch vs Sebastian Zbik - Overall Starosch had better aggression, better punch-stats and showed more power. Zbik stole several close rounds however, and pulled out the win with a 9-5, 9-6, 8-6 decision.

Quarter-Finals:

Arthur Abraham vs Hans Stretz - This was shaping up to be a barnburner when Stretz landed a huge cross that put Abraham down for the count in the 10th to take out the #1 seed! Abraham was up 3-2 on all cards through the first 5 rounds.

Felix Sturm vs Sebastian Zbik - A boring..and I mean very boring match between 2 fighters that didn't wish to do the work lead to a controversial 8-7, 8-6, 8-7 decision for Sturm. Most felt that Zbik did enough to win the bout, which wasn't saying much as neither man was willing to mix it up throughout most of the fight.

Jupp Elze vs Young Mahoney - Elze scored the lone knockdown in the 8th, but Mahoney came back with several huge rounds in this hard fought and entertaining 8-7, 9-6, 9-6 decision for Elze!

Bert Schenk vs Sebastian Sylvester - Sylvester was carrying the day in a hard fought bout when a nasty cut ended the night for Schenk. Sylvester lead 6-1, 6-1, 5-2 through the first 7 rounds. Score it a 8 TKO for for Sylvester!

Semi-Finals:

Felix Sturm vs Hans Stretz - Sturm fought his best fight of the tournament against the Cinderella man Stretz. He moved well throughout and punished Stretz whenever he came too close in his 11-4, 11-4 8-7 decision.

Jupp Elze vs Sebastian Sylvester - Sylvester was cut early in the 1st round, and Elze was in control when the cut reopened in the 3rd round. Elze then dominated from there until in the 7th, out of desperation Sylvester was sent out head hunting. About midway through the round Sylvester landed a perfect downstairs upstairs combo that flattened Elze, who couldn't answer the count to give Sylvester the come from behind KO! Elze was up 4-2, 3-3, 4-1 at the time of the stop.

Final:

Felix Sturm vs Sebastian Sylvester - Nearly every round of this fight was a toss up round as when the action was great, both men had their moments, when the action was bad for one, it was bad for the other. None the less I had it 7-6 for Sturm, the judges scored it 9-5 Sylvester, 10-3 Sturm and 8-6 for the winner by split decision Felix Sturm! Sturm was the busier more accurate fighter, but Sylvester had more steam to his punches which accounted for such wildly different scoring by the judges. Sturm, the #2 seed will move on to the World Tourney.

Only 4 fighters in this class, so we go straight to the Semi-Finals:

Semi-Finals:

Echkard Dagge vs Werner Mundt - Dagge beat Mundt in all phases of the game out boxing and out slugging (2 knockdowns) but in the 14th a broken nose that wouldn't stop bleeding was Mundt's final downfall as Dagge gets the TKO! Dagge was up 8-4, 9-2, 8-4 through 13.

Frank Wissenbach vs Gerhard Piaskowy - Wissenbach came out strong, but couldn't handle the power of Piaskowy as he succumbed to the KO in the 3rd round!

Final:

Eckhard Dagge vs Gerhard Piaskowy - This fight had everything a fight fan could ask for except a knockdown or KO! Dagge was the consummate counter-puncher throughout as Piaskowy kept the ring cut off well, landing seemingly at will at times! In the end it was a very, very close fight that could have gone either way. The judges score the fight 8-6, 7-7, 7-6 for Dagge who moves on to the World Tourney!

I wasn't suprised by the results of the Jr. Middleweights. What shocked me was the results of the Middleweights...Arthur Abraham KO'd in the 1st round of the tourney....who'd have thunk it?

Semi-Finals:

Gustav Eder vs Karl-Heinz Guder - Eder came in a 5-1 favorite and was expecting a cakewalk against Guder. No-one expected the kind of excitement that Guder helped to generate in this close action packed fight that saw Guder down in the 1st, then Eder down in the 7th! Guder faded after the 8th round as Eder pounded on him until in the 13th he scored the KO win over the exhausted yet surprisingly effective Guder.

Oktay Urkal vs Michel Trabant - 2 boxers, 1 ring and a stinker of a fight. Neither man was able to sustain an effective offense throughout the fight and it showed in the score cards. The judges had it 8-6 Trabant, 7-7, 7-7 for the Majority Draw. Rematch next.

Rematch:

Oktay Urkal vs Michel Trabant - Excellent back and forth fight this time out as both men stepped up the action throughout. Urkal scored a pair of knockdowns, but Trabant didn't let that stop him from fighting back and making it an exciting fight. In the end it went to the judges after 15 wild rounds! They scored it 7-6 Urkal, 9-6 Trabant and 9-6 for the winner Michel Trabant!

Final:

Gustav Eder vs Michel Trabant - Eder used magnificent defensive skills and suprising power (knockdown in the 3rd round) to dominate Trabant 12-3, 11-4, 12-3 and move forward to the World Tournament.

Final:

Willy Quatuor vs Conny Rudhoff - Quatuor dominated using his jab to set up a cross that he seemed to land at will against Rudhoff. The Compu-Box #'s show it all as Quatuor landed 559 of 1116 punches (50.1%) compared to 273 of 1368 (20%) for Rudhoff. Quatuor will represent Germany in the World Tournament.

There is no doubt that Max Schmeling is the leader of this team, but both Graciano Rocchigiani and Gustav Eder have a solid chance of doing well in the tourney. The biggest dissapointment was Arthur Abraham losing in the first round of the Middleweight tournament.
