Baltimore Captures Inaugural Joy in Mudville World Series
Baltimore--Perhaps it was only fitting that a guy named Jim played a key role in deciding the inaugural Joy in Mudville World Series.
Baltimore right-hander Jim Hardin pitched and hit the Orioles to a 10-3 victory Sunday over Pittsburgh at Memorial Stadium. The win gave Baltimore a four games-to-two Series triumph. Early on, it appeared the Pirates would force a game seven Monday. Pittsburgh took a 2-0 lead with a pair of third-inning runs. Matty Alou first doubled home Manny Sanguillen, and then Roberto Clemente singeld Alou in. The Orioles finally broke through against Pittsburgh left-hander Luke Walker in the fourth. Walks to Brooks Robinson and rookie Chris Speier sandwiched a single by center fielder Dave May loaded the bases. That brought Hardin. a .184 hitter with no home runs during the regular season, to the plate. Hardin cracked a 1-0 pitch into the left-field bleachers for a grand slam. The Orioles never looked back. By the end of the seventh inning, Baltimore had built a 6-2 lead. If Pittsburgh--the team that rallied from an 0-2 deficit in the National League Championship Series--still held any comeback thoughts, those hopes were dashed in the Orioles' final at-bat of the season. Brooks Robinson smacked a three-run homer off reliever Fred Cambria to put the game away. Hardin, the game three loser, scattered seven hits and struck out two en route to the victory. Left-hander Pete Richert replaced Hardin and pitched the final two innings. The 30-year-old reliever pitched 8.2 innings of scoreless post-season ball. Walker, the game three winner in a masterful performance, struggled mightily. The Pirate lefty surrendered five runs on six hits and six walks in just five innings. Cuellar Edges Clemente for JIM World Series Most Valuable Player
Baltimore left-hander Mike Cuellar has been selected as the 1970 Joy in Mudville World Series Most Valuable Player.
Cuellar won both his Series starts. The 33-year-old starter gave up just two earned run in 12 innings and posted a 1.50 ERA. Cuellar walked just one batter while striking out nine. Pittsburgh right fielder was a close second in the balloting. Clemente hit .538 (14-for-26) with five RBIs in the Series. In addition, he hit safely in all six Series games. Ironically both players were the MVPs of the league championship series. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 02-06-2008 at 07:07 AM. |

Baltimore Deals Palmer to Atlanta
Before the champagne had even dried on Baltimore's Joy in Mudville World Series title, the Orioles' roster has changed.
Baltimore shipped starting pitcher Jim Palmer to the Atlanta Braves for third baseman Darrell Evans. Thought to be a mainstay in the Oriole rotation, Palmer posted an 11-8 record with a 3.74 ERA in 31 games this past season. The 24-year-old right-hander made 20 starts for Baltimore. He appeared in just one World Series game. Evans, 23, hit .287 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs for Atlanta. The Pasadena, Texas native had 436 at-bats with the Braves. "We have to start looking toward the future of the franchise," said Baltimore GM Dan V. "Brooks Robinson isn't getting any younger. We believe Darrell Evans will be a future All-Star in our lineup." Meanwhile, the Braves jumped at the chance to add a young arm to their starting rotation that already includes 19-game winners Phil Niekro and Ron Reed. One rival GM scratched his head at the deal. "I like Evans," said the GM who wished to remain anonymous. "But couldn't they have gotten more for Palmer?!" Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 02-02-2008 at 02:47 PM. |

Kansas City Royalty Dominates American League Gold Glove Team
If the American League Gold Glove team is any indication, you probably don't want to hit the ball to the Kansas City outfield.
The Royals swept all three outfield spots on the 1970 Gold Glove team. Left fielder Lou Piniella, center fielder Amos Otis and right fielder Pat Kelly were all honored. No other team placed more than one player on the slick-fielding squad. Pitcher: Jim Kaat (Minnesota Twins) Catcher: Ray Fosse (Cleveland Indians) First Baseman: Pete Ward (New York Yankees) Second Baseman: Ted Kubiak (Milwaukee Brewers) Third Baseman: Brooks Robinson (Baltimore Orioles) Shortstop: Luis Aparicio (Chicago White Sox) Left Fielder: Lou Piniella (Kansas City Royals) Center Fielder: Amos Otis (Kansas City Royals) Right Fielder: Pat Kelly (Kansas City Royals) Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 02-03-2008 at 10:15 AM. |

Joy in Mudville Rookies of the Year Announced
Although technically all players in the inaugural Joy in Mudville players were first-year players, league officials announced the winners of the Rookie-of-the-Year awards.
The honors were based on players who would have been eligible in real life. St. Louis short stop Ed Crosby captured the National League honor. A starter at age 21 in the June All-Star Game, Crosby hit .316 with 10 home runs and 70 RBIs for the Cardinals. He also scored 78 runs in 148 games. New York Yankee pitcher Steve Kline won the American League award. The 23-year-old right-hander compiled an 18-8 record with a 2.75 ERA. Kline walked just 51 batters while striking out 115 in 291.1 innings. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 02-04-2008 at 08:37 AM. |

Pittsburgh Trades Clemente to Los Angeles
After battling each other in the National League Championship Series, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Los Angeles Dodgers created some excitement off the field.
Pittsburgh, the NL champions, traded popular All-Star right fielder Roberto Clemente and relief pitcher John Lamb to Los Angeles in exchange for outfielder Willie Crawford and minor league prospects Charlie Hough and Tom Paciorek. Clemente, 36, is coming off an MVP-caliber season in which he hit .324 with 26 home runs and 98 RBIs. He batted a robust .538 in the World Series against Baltimore. Clemente capped his season with a Gold Glove. Lamb, 24, appeared in 55 games for Pittsburgh. The right-hander was 3-3 with a 2.37 ERA. Lamb recorded eight saves. Ironically, he will join right-hander Ray Lamb (no relation) in the Dodger flock. Meanwhile, Crawford played 137 games for the Dodgers. The left-handed 27-year-old batted .290 with eight homers and 68 RBIs. Hough, 22, spent last season with the Fullerton Titans in Triple-A. The right-hander is expected to make the Pirate staff as a middle reliever. Paciorek, 23, will likely start 1971 in Triple-A. The right-handed hitter played most of last season at Class-A Shark Island. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 02-03-2008 at 03:23 PM. |

California-Boston Hook Up on Five-Player Deal
The Hot Stove League is simmering.
The California Angels traded starting pitcher Tom Bradley and catcher Tom Egan to the Boston Red Sox for three players--pitchers Roger Moret and Jose Santiago along with catcher Don Pavletich. Bradley, 23, is a hard-throwing right-hander. He posted a 12-17 record with a 4.00 ERA in 43 starts for the Angels. Bradley (pictured below) struck out 176 batters in 288 innings. Egan, 30, hit .241 with 15 home runs and 52 RBIs. He also threw out nearly 40% of the runners who attempted to steal. Moret, 21, appeared in 35 games for Boston. The left-hander was 8-3 with one save. He posted a 4.06 ERA. Santiago, 30, led the Red Sox with 17 saves. He was 4-4 with a 3.08 ERA in 35 games. The 32-year-old Pavletich played in 136 games for the Red Sox. Pavletich hit just .207 with nine homers and 39 RBIs. Like Egan, he threw out almost 40% of the runners attempting to steal. McNally Captures American League Cy Young
Capturing the Joy in Mudville American League Cy Young Award may have been the easiest win of the year for Baltimore left-hander Dave McNally.
The 27-year-old received every first-place vote and outdistanced Vida Blue of Oakland for the honor. McNally registered a 24-10 record with a 2.90 ERA in 40 starts. Blue, 19-7 with a 2.77 ERA, finished runner-up. Boston's Ray Culp was third. Oakland's Al Downing was fourth and New York's Fritz Peterson was fifth in the balloting. Others receiving votes were Joe Horlen and Wilbur Wood of Chicago and Mike Cuellar of Baltimore. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 02-07-2008 at 10:19 AM. |

Aaron Edges Teammate for NL Most Valuable Player
The inaugural Joy in Mudville National League Most Valuable Player race turned out to be a photo finish.
Atlanta Braves' outfielder Hank Aaron edged teammate Rico Carty by one voting point to take the honor. Aaron led the National League in home runs (44), runs (102) and RBIs (123). The 36-year-old hit .298. Carty, 31, led the NL with a .354 average. He hit 24 homers and drove home 97 runs. The Atlanta duo was closely followed by Pittsburgh All-Star Roberto Clemente, who finished third. Willie Davis of Los Angeles was fourth. Tony Perez of Cincinnati finished fifth. Others receiving votes were Willie McCovey of San Francisco, Bobby Tolan of Cincinnati and Billy Williams of Chicago. Last edited by Joy in Mudville; 02-07-2008 at 10:16 AM. |

A Look Back on 1971
1971 This could well be the year that marked the start of the digital age when the Microprocessor was invented. We also saw the use of more and more of the transistor technology in use in things like hand held calculators which although are still very expensive over time will drop in price and increase in function to where we are today. It is also the first year North Sea Oil production begins in Norway. One other major change is the change to Decimalisation in the UK and Ireland. The birth of Greenpeace signals a need to question how we manage the resources entrusted to us and a means of organised questioning of governments around the world.

Meet the Mets: Series MVP Cuellar Dealt to New York
What have you done for me lately?
That's the question the Baltimore Orioles must have asked Mike Cuellar early Wednesday morning. Cuellar, the Most Valuable Player in the 1970 Joy in Mudville World Series, was traded by Baltimore to the New York Mets. Cuellar, 33, won 22 games last season for the Orioles. The left-hander posted a 3.34 ERA. Cuellar, also the American League Championship Series MVP, was 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA during the World Series. Baltimore acquired starting pitcher Tom Seaver in the deal with New York. The 25-year-old right-hander was just 10-12 with a 3.40 ERA for the Mets. Seaver struck out 176 batters in 254 innings. "On the surface this looks like a one-sided trade," said Baltimore GM Dan V. "But, we like what we see in Seaver, and he's eight years younger." Cuellar is the second pitcher that the Orioles have traded since the World Series. Jim Palmer was dealt to Atlanta right after the Fall Classic. Three-Way Deal Sends Former Top Pick to Orioles
The first three-way trade in Joy in Mudville history has occured on this snowy Wednesday afternoon.
First, Baltimore sent promising outfielder Don Baylor to Washington for the Senators' first two picks in the June amateur draft. The Orioles then shipped those two picks to San Diego in exchange for pitcher Jon Matlack, the No. 1 overall pick in last June's draft. Baltimore and San Diego also agreed to swap third-round picks. Matlack, 21, posted a dismal 5-18 record for the Padres during the 1970 season. The left-hander gave up 29 home runs in 181.1 innings. Baylor, 21, spent last year in the Oriole farm system. However, he was expected to have pushed Dave May and Paul Blair for Baltimore's starting center field job this spring. Washington GM Dan S. likes what he sees in the right-handed hitting Baylor. "The Senators are starting to put together some young talent," said the Washington braintrust. "We know we won't compete for at least two years, but we have a young core of sluggers who will be together for a long time... or until they get traded tomorrow."
