Speaking of ruling the 20's the Doves are always for an upgrade in offense, right now Esasky still's at 3b so if ya got better give me a shout of what you would want in return.

1908 Amateur Draft
As expected, the top pick in the draft was centerfielder Duke Snider. Snider is raw, but is projected to be a franchise-level player when he develops - which Pittsburgh can only hope is quickly. Fellow CF'er Bernie Williams went to the Highlanders with the second pick - he'll also need some time to develop. First baseman Joe Harris, who has possibly the biggest offensive upside, went to the Cubs with the third pick.

1908 - End of Regular Season
PHILS RUN AWAY WITH NL FLAG
The Philadelphia Phillies put on a show in the National League, taking the pennant with a BaTTY-best record of 98-56, nearly becoming the league's first 100-win team. The Phils turned the trick by solid play in all phases of the game. The team batting average was .276 (tops in BaTTY) while the pitchers allowed opponents to hit just .234 (also tops in BaTTY). The team featured the league's top winner in pitcher Al Atkinson who put up a sparking 31-7 record with a league-best 1.66 ERA. On offense the team was very balanced, but 3B Steve Jeltz led the squad in RBI (92) and batting average (.328). AL RACE COMES DOWN TO THE WIRE - AND THEN SOME The chase for the American League pennant was close once again. This time it was a four-team race between league champion Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and St. Louis. Entering the final week, both the Senators and Athletics dropped back, shortening the race to a two-team battle between Boston and St. Louis. When the dust settled after game #154, the teams were tied, forcing a one-game showdown for all the marbles. In that game, it was the Browns coming out on top 5-3 behind Frank Gabler to claim another American League pennant, the team's fourth in the eight-year history of the league.

You just hate anybody who beats your mediocre team!!!!
I should know, I am an expert on mediocre.....ask either of my ex-wives (though if they gotten to be "mediocre" I might been still married to one of 'em..............nah that was a stupid thought)

World Series Update - 1908
PHILLIES STORM TO FIRST WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
The Philadelphia Phillies capped a triumphant 1908 campaign by taking care of the American League champion St. Louis Browns in a short five-game series. After dropping game one of the Series at home by a score of 7-3, the Phils stormed back to win four straight (the last three on enemy ground) to claim the title. Outfielder Bob O'Hara starred for the Phils, hitting a whopping .619 for the Series. O'Hara collected at least two hits in every Series game, finishing 13-for-21 at the plate, with six runs scored, three driven in and one of his team's two homers in the Series.

I dunno man, I'm not far behind you and I can't draft for nothin' it seems. My prospects all flame out into medicrity and the few good players I started with are all old now.

Well - I got good rookie years out of Pizarro (RoY - 21-19, 2.70 ERA) and Spahn (17-17, 2.69 ERA). Harris looks like he's ready for prime time next year, and Poholsky got a nice ratings boost. Now if only Kiner would develop....
Actually - us Cubbies have some decent pitching prospects (Poholsky, Alexander, Paniauga) that we could consider moving for some help in the field (if you think Butch Hobson was a bad fielder in real life - just look at him in 1908). I'm fine at catcher, 1B and CF - but I'll look for help anywhere else. Drop me a line. |

Cleveland is in dire need of a 3b and/or SS. The acquisition of Greg Norton a year ago did nothing to help. We have the reiging AL MVP in Joltin' Joe DiMaggio and the AL ROY in Vic Aldridge as well as some other decent young pitchers and alot of talent in the OF. C and 1b are serviceable. But my god, at 3b & SS we used about 12 different players this year and combined they all hit about .175. I have one pretty decent bargaining chip in a Top 5 draft pick a few years ago, CF Cesar Geronimo who is probably a year away but has 7 contact talent and can play all 3 OF spots (limited power, ok eye and speed). He along with some of our arms can be had for an upgrade at SS/3b

Well my best hitter Puckett got hurt in spring training and was on DL all season, but when the new season flipped over he has now disapeared.
No word I can find that he had a carrer ending injury or he retired.

I found him listed in the retired players (in the almanac). Still injured, too (out for six more weeks), even though he's retired.

1909 Amateur Draft
OUTFIELDER TOPS THE CHARTS ONCE AGAIN
For the second straight season the Pittsburgh Pirates selected an outfielder to begin the BaTTY rookie draft. Last year's choice, Duke Snider, spent a productive season in the minors and is ranked the organization's second-best prospect behind hurler Jim Scott who dominated the minors last season. This year, the Bucs tapped Ross Youngs, a right-fielder who is believed to be ready to contribute now, but will blossom into a star within a few seasons. Hurler Noodles Hahn was picked second, going to the New York Highlanders while center fielder Happy Felsch was taken third, joining the Cincinnati Reds. This was a good draft for catchers as three top-notch backstops were drafted consecutively in the first round, going 5-6-7. Dale Murphy, an outfielder who can also catch, went 8th and it is thought that Detroit will employ Murphy behind the plate. Overall, three of this season's picks were immediately slotted in the top 10 prospect rankings: Hahn (#8), Youngs (#9) and Felsch (#10). The results of the 1909 BaTTY Draft: Round 1: Pittsburgh pick: RF Ross Youngs New York (A) pick: P Noodles Hahn. Signing Bonus: $0 Cincinnati pick: CF Happy Felsch. Thank goodness the later rounds gave my Senators some pitchers. We were running thin, down to only 9 in the whole organization.
