RWS In Mexico
from the secret memoirs of Ralph Wilson Stanton:
November 12, 1906 - Things are progressing nicely with PV. "Bronze" has been with him often, and makes sure he reads from the Spanish translation of Das Kapital that we've put together for our Latin comrades. It's only a matter of time, I believe. On the other hand, we had bad news from our efforts on the political front. Not a single one of the Social Democratic candidates was elected to Congress. In a few of the Texas districts the races were moderately close. The poor showing is undoubtedly attributable to one simple fact: the property clause. If a man owns no property, he can not vote. Typical of the capitalist fat cats, but it's always been thus in the Confederacy. If the revolution can not succeed via the ballot, there is always the alternative, though I would rather not go down that bloody road.

Pritchard In Panama
from the Richmond Courier, November 12, 1906:
PRITCHARD MAKES HISTORY - President Jeter C. Pritchard made history as the first Chief Executive - of either the C.S.A. or U.S.A. - to leave the country for foreign shores while in office. The President, citing his desire to see the works for himself, arrived safely in Panama City two days ago. Since then he has been in the jungles with the construction crews carving a canal out of a pestilential wilderness most Americans can not fathom. "This is what the Confederacy is all about," said a beaming President as he observed a crew blasting a path through the rocks of central Panama. "Progress. This canal will be the greatest human achievement of our lifetimes and it will belong to the Confederacy." Yesterday the President travelled to the Pacific side of the isthmus and gazed out on the shining blue waters of the world's largest ocean. "Imagine the day when Confederate warships can freely slip from the Caribbean into the Pacific Ocean. What an advantage that will give our country," he said, with the world's largest grin. "We will finally have stepped out from the shadow of our erstwhile countrymen to the North." ![]() Panama Canal Under Construction

McKinley's Award
from the Columbia Patriot, December 11, 1906:
President McKinley yesterday became the first American - of either US or CS origin - to win a Nobel prize when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in recognition of his successful mediation ending the Russo-Japanese War in 1905. Though the President will not leave the country to accept the award (the ceremony is held in Sweden), he was quoted as saying, "This is an incredible honor and one I will cherish for all my days. This award epitomizes what the American people stand for - peace and cooperation. I hope to further earn the honor bestowed upon me by continuing to work in the cause of peace." A small demonstration outside the Executive Mansion found several young men carrying signs which read: "Stop the Buildup" and "Peace for Asia, War for America?" - possibly referring to the recent McKinley initiative to counter the Confederacy's naval programs with a similar program here in the U.S. In the Philadelphia Navy Yard, the skeleton of the first U.S. "dreadnought" battleship has begun to take shape.

The Grand Duke visits Richmond
Editorial from the Richmond Courier, February 11, 1906:
The brother of the Tsar of Russia, the Grand Duke Mikhail Romanov, arrived in Richmond yesterday for a meeting with the President and his closest advisors. The rumored purpose of the visit is to explore a closer relationship with between the CSA and the Russian Empire. With the United States ever closer to the Tsar's cousin, the German Kaiser, it is believed that Tsar Nicholas II would like to balance any agreement those two countries might make with one between his own country and the Confederacy. As an official state visit, the particulars of yesterday's meeting were not made privy to the public or the press. One can assume, however, that the Russian Grand Duke was not here for mere pleasantries. The disappointing (to say the least) result of last year's war with Japan has left Russia looking vulnerable - a fact no doubt lost upon the military masterminds in Berlin and elsewhere. That the somewhat harse (for Russia) peace between Japan and the Tsar was brokered by President McKinley, whose man in Berlin, Theodore Roosevelt, is pursuing close relations with the German Kaiserreich, has also not been lost on Nicholas and his advisors. One is left to wonder what our founding father George Washington would think of this nation (and the U.S.) becoming embroiled in European affairs. It was he, after all, who admonished his fellow citizens against such entanglements. After all, Russia is already allied with France, while Germany is allied with the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Britain, though so far outside the dizzying array of alignments in Europe, is thought to be in negotiations with Russia as well.

I also wonder how much if any I can improve that dismal San Juan team.
My players personality is that of a mal-content who would probably jump teams alot. |
