Seeking confirmation. We all know I suck at this game.
From today's Vault release. Is this...could it be...the ever elusive George Throop? |

I did not know he was elusive...But, yes that is George Throop.
There is also a Tom Tellman in an Orioles uniform...He only went to ST with them and never played in an official game with their organization Last edited by Pinetarpress; 11-15-2016 at 05:14 PM. |

There are (as I'm sure you know) certain players who, for reasons unknown, just do not exist in quality color images. In Throop's case, despite pitching in parts of 4 seasons for the Royals--in color--there's his quarter of a rookie card, the All Time Royals set and, IIRC, a badly out of focus no cap Omaha shot. There are a couple of nice B&W, which others have colorized nicely, but that's it. This is certainly the first we've seen of him from the Vault. And, as Merkle points out, we're still looking for a color Astros image of the man.

Elusive 1978 Royals
Mr. Throop was elusive alright. Now, if we can just find color images of Randy Bass (available only in B&W on his 1979 Topps Prospects card) and Steve Foucault (no known authentic image in KC garb), there would be much rejoicing!

MISSING Player Art "Reddy" McCoy 1889 Washington Nationals
I received this photo of Art "Reddy" McCoy from the 1889 Washington Nationals from the Montour County Historical Society. It appears to be either the 1886 or 1887 Danville, PA club. McCoy was a lifelong Danville resident and was involved with Danville's baseball scene from the 1880's to his untimely passing at age 40 in 1904.

Luvs me some fresh Pilots. Given the uni and the number, this would be the spring of 1970.

Thad Tillotson 1961
Back when I was 8 years old it was absolutely stupefying to me that a Yankees' rookie pitcher named Thad Tillotson had not even gotten to spring training with another team since way back in the middle ages - 1961! Topps shot Tillotson then with the team which signed him, the Dodgers. Tillotson's main claim to fame in New York was as the batter in one of the most infamous Red Sox-Yankee brawls ever. He was hit by a Jim Lonborg pitch, shouted a retaliatory threat from first base, and the brawls and bullpens emptied and the cops had to come onto the field to break it up. Among the police, the brother of Boston third baseman Rico Petrocelli.
Wednesday's Topps uploads (KD) 656-659 Bobby Tolan; 660-661 Dave Tobik; 662-663 Jackson Todd; 664-665 Thad Tillotson; 666-667 Tom Tischinski; 668-671 Jim Todd; 672-675 Dave Tomlin; 676-679 Tom Timmermann; 680-681 Don Timberlake (Angels system); 682-683 Ron Tingley; 684-685 Wayne Tollefson; 686-687 Gary Timberlake; 688-691 Tommy Toms; 692-695 Ron Tompkins Last edited by Merkle923; 11-17-2016 at 08:42 PM. |

Not trying to start anything, but I believe 662-663 is Jackson Todd.

Tolliver or Timberlake
On the minors thread, pinetarpress went into detail to describe 680-681 as Angels prospect Gary Timberlake.

Toliver and Timberlake have similarities, but it is Don Timberlake, as Pinetarpress exactly identified in the minors thread. Here is a scan of a 1983 Fritsch Card for the Peoria Suns (Midwest League), that I have.

Dan Boitano 1978
Not an earthshaking picture, but hey, it's Danny Boitano in color as a Met. Only other color shots I can recall of him in blue and orange are Merkle's kind offerings.
From eBay seller roughandready, who also has a not bad Bruce Bochy as a Met at Wrigley if you wanna dig. |

Bob Addis (1925 - 2016)
Bob Addis passed away Tuesday at the age of 91. Addis played for the Braves, Cubs and Pirates. The outfielder was originally signed by the Yankees in 1943 and spent 1944 and 1945 in the service. Having been taken by the Dodgers in the 1947 minor league draft, Addis was traded to the Braves in 1949 and made his major league debut with them on September 1, 1950. Bob's passing leaves (at most) 8 surviving members of the Boston Braves (there's some question as to whether Harry MacPherson is still living). Bob's best season came with the Cubs in 1952. He played in a career high 93 games that year and finished with a .295 batting average. But his numbers fell through the floor in 1953 and the Cubs sent him to the Pirates in the trade that brought Ralph Kiner to Chicago. Bob appeared in only 4 games with Pittsburgh that year, going 0 for 3 at the plate and that was the last major league action he would see. After he retired from baseball, Bob served for 34 years as a teacher and coach (and, ultimately, Athletic Director) at Euclid High School in Ohio.
While looking for pictures of Bob Addis (cuz I do that sort of thing), I came across this post from Jay (Buccos) in 2013. It's been 3 years, so maybe he's found one in the interim. But there did not seem to be any reply on Addis, here. I came across this Press Photo featuring some of the players Pittsburgh acquired for Kiner. Addis is on the far right. Unfortunately, all that seems to remain on the web is a small-ish image--a ghost of the original when, I take it, the press photo was offered on eBay and/or Amazon. The larger attached is about 250% magnification. So an image (at least one) of Addis with the Pirates DOES exist. You just need to track down an actual copy of the Press Photo (sometimes these things turn up in the Lexibell files, but there are so many it can take forever to go through them). |

I never found a suitable Pirates photo of Addis, so I Photoshopped one. Addis' head, Bob Garber's body:

Bruce dal Canton in today's Vault offering
Bruce dal Canton is among an increasingly rare class of major leaguer: he was signed in an open tryout.
Dal Canton already had his B.A. in science and education and was a teacher and coach at Burgettstown Junior/Senior High School when he took his knuckleball to a Pirates camp during the summer of 1966.He was signed by the Pirates in an open tryout that also netted them longtime major leaguer Woodie Fryman. Barely a year later, he broke through to the majors in September of 1967 and netted two wins as a reliever before throwing a complete game against the defending NL champions Dodgers. He worked out of the bullpen much of the time, but once dealt to the Royals for the 1971 season, he was dropped into the rotation and had nine complete games in 1974 and threw a career-high 175 innings. He was traded to the Braves midway through the 1975 season and ended his pitching career with the 1977 White Sox. But his second career soon began. He spent more than 25 years in the Braves system as a pitching coach, including a stint in Atlanta from 1987-90, when he was replaced by close friend Leo Mazzone. Before the 1992 postseason, he was brought in at age 50 to throw knuckleballs in batting practice in preparation for facing Tim Wakefield. He was pitching coach in the Braves upper-Class A team in Myrtle Beach from 1999 until May of 2008, He died that September from esophageal cancer. The club retired his number and named the locker room in his honor. |
