1989 Indians. I don't recall the source but it may have been Baseball-Birthdays.

Bert Cueto 1961

This, sadly, is not a color photo of this seven-game major leaguer with his only team, the 1961 Twins. The image is also not new, though I do think it may be the best screening of it from the source, a large postcard of the 1962 Vancouver Mounties.

So until and unless a Twins image pops up, it's a color gap-filler (with Joe McCabe peeking up from in front).

Koufax Glove Goofing!

Add Sandy Koufax to the list of great pitchers who fooled photographer with the wrong glove. This shot, from the Polo Grounds in 62 has he and Stan Williams swapping gloves for the heck of it.
Left to right: Drysdale, Pete Richert, Williams, Koufax, Podres.

Photo from Facebook page of Alabama Baseball Appreciation Society, of which I am a member.

Extremely sad!!! Very somber mood in Miami area and Tampa area, where Jose played his high school ball. It's not just the death of a great player, but the death of a person with an electric personality. Marlins players were playing with tears in their eyes last night and played inspired baseball. What was mentioned on the Marlins' telecast yesterday, was a fact that most people don't realize. Jose made the jump all the way from Jupiter/ Florida State League/ advanced A ball in 2012 to become the N.l rookie of the Year in 2013 with the Marlins. Some of his Jupiter teammates made it to the Marlins eventually, but not until three years later. After making it back from Tommy John surgery he was just reaching his peak. His death is very, very tragic.
The only other death of a prominent major leaguer in the prime of their career that I can remember was the death of Lyman Bostock (murdered at age 27 in 1978). Ironically he died at the same time of year, on the next to last Sunday of the season, like Jose (and just one day off Fernandez's death (Sept. 24, 1978).
Rest In peace, Jose!

Young Ballplayers Early Exit

The 1962 ROY, Ken Hubbs, died at age 22. He had finished his 2nd ML season and died in a plane crash in Feb. 1964. Not yet considered a star, he was a solid ML player and highly thought of with a great glove. Topps issued a special 1964 cards in his memory. Miami has to be reakkt shaken up, but the season is almost over and I hope they can come to grips with this tragic death over the Winter.

MISSING Player George Carman 1891 Philadelphia Athletics

I located a photo of George Carman, who played for the 1890 Philadelphia Athletics and was a longtime player and manager for various Pennsylvania teams.

He was pictured as manager of the Altoona club in the May 26, 1907 Philadelphia Inquirer. Name is misspelled Carmen, but both spellings were used commonly for him.

Elio Chacon 1960

Can't get enough of poor Elio, who by all metrics was one of the top four position players on the woeful '62 Mets and was nonetheless banished to the minors.

I wasn't born yet...but my father Jesse Jefferson was very close with Lyman...in fact that's what my brother Corey's middle name is...he was like a brother to my dad and he wasn't the same after that happened. I did have a chance to meet Jose once and he was a super nice guy and took time out to say hello to me after hearing my father played pro as well. It was like talking to family. Very sad and I watched the Marlins game last night and I was very moved by the entire thing especially Dee Gordon...I know for a fact God was moving in that stadium last night.

Dick Drott 1957

Wild righty who won 15 games as a Cubs rookie and only twelve the rest of his career, rarely seen in his attempt to stick around for awhile in Houston:

Mike Miley 1953-1977

Since we got new images for MIke Miley today, it should be mentioned that he is another top talent who died young.

Miley was a star quarterback at LSU as well as a first-round baseball talent (Angels, 1974). He played in 70 games in 1975, 14 in '76, but was killed in a single car crash near Baton Rouge on January 6, 1977, at age 23.

Dave Wainhouse 1991

I'm not sure if anybody else was clamoring for Dave Wainhouse in a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform, but I was. This one comes off a random internet posting from some guy that had an autographed poster.
