It's similar to MLS, probably upper League One standard if you were to compare it to England.

Speaking of the A-League, Sydney FC has just lost it's marquee player Dwight York, to Sunderland. Guess we'll be looking for another aging former EPL player now.

Sydney FC will search for a new marquee player after Dwight Yorke confirmed his move to Championship club Sunderland.

Yorke has agreed a two-year deal with the recently relegated club and will play under former Manchester United teammate Roy Keane after Sydney FC and Sunderland agreed an undisclosed transfer fee.

Sydney FC chairman Walter Bugno has expressed his disappointment in seeing the 34-year-old leave, but also wished him good luck as he heads back to England.

"Dwight Yorke has made an unbelievable contribution to Sydney FC and Australian football and we wish him nothing but luck in his new endeavours with Sunderland," said Bugno.

“Sydney FC has always maintained that marquee players have an important role to play in the early stages of the Hyundai A-League."

"Before the A-League started we believed in the principal of a marquee player and now we have seen the advantages, on and off the field, we will set out to find another player who can contribute as much to the game as Dwight has since he arrived last year."

"Our coaching staff will start drawing up a list of targets straight away and I am in Europe for the next two weeks so I am available to meet with any prospective marquee players."

New Sydney FC boss Terry Butcher was equally as disappointed to see Yorke go but was keen to echo the thoughts of his chairman.

"It’s sad to see Dwight leave. He is a great player and a tremendous personality to have in the team and he has worked very hard since I came to Sydney to be in shape to play," said Butcher - who is in Melbourne preparing his side for Saturday's clash against the Victory.

"He has great respect amongst the players and coaching staff and he will be missed."

Dwight Yorke made 21 appearances for Sydney FC, scoring seven times and lifting the very first A-league trophy when Sydney defeated the Central Coast Mariners 1-0 in the Grand Final last March.

Ballack fined over handbag - AP

Photo AAP

//ord=Math.random();//ord=ord*10000000000000000000;document.write('');

Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has been fined 70,000 euros ($A118,000) for failing to declare to German customs a handbag he bought for his wife in Dubai.

The Germany captain had tax evasion charges dropped and settled with the state court two days before the case was to go to trial.

Ballack's status as one of the world's best paid players proved costly as the fine for an infraction in Germany is determined by income.

The court set the original fine at euros 50,000 ($A84,000) - the maximum allowed under German law - but Ballack appealed against the amount.

According to Landshut court president Karl Woerle that negated his right to negotiate a smaller fine.

Ballack then agreed to pay an extra euros 20,000 ($A33,500) to settle the matter before it went to court.

Charities will receive euros 65,000 ($A109,500) and court costs will cover the remaining euros 5,000 ($A8,500) of Ballack's fine.

Ballack brought back the euros 2,000 ($A3,350) handbag for his wife in January from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, after a training camp with former club Bayern Munich.

Man German courts are always scary. Wonder how he avoided the two months in a concentration camp.

Two early results from today's Euro 2008 qualifying games. In Group C, Scotland thrashed Faroe Islands 6-0, whilst in Group F, Iceland won away from home 3-0 over Northern Ireland.

Barrow do seem to have enough offense. It would be fun to watch a barrow match as the last two were 3-2

If this were 1994 Romania v Bulgaria would far and away be the match of the day. Two of the most exciting players ever would have been on display. Gheorgie Hagii and Hristo Stoichkov.
