I would love to see Ayala get Left Jab a title as we have only had the lightweight title(during the stretch where it changed hands almost every match it seemed)for a brief stretch. Great stuff and much thanks for getting the ball rolling and doing a great job with the pre-fight info..really makes things much more interesting. Peace fellas.

This is a return match between the two which was won by unanimous decison by Pender. Pender is a former WW Champion who won the title from Season 1 EOY Tournament winner Steve Belloise and made 1 successful defense before losing the title. Turner stormed through the Gold Conference racking up 19 consecutive victories before an unexpected 1st round KO loss in his last fight of the season.

Bout Result:

Charles Turner W-KO15 Paul Pender

Paul Pender came out quickly and dominated the entire fight. He scored big knockdowns in the 6th round and the 9th round. Turner looked bad and was also cut in the 10th. With time running out, Turner landed the perfect punch and dropped the former champ. The former champ could not get up and Turner moves on to the next round.
Nice, that sounded like one hell of a comeback win. You have to love this game at times like these.

Season 2 EOY Tournament - Welterweight (1st Round)

UTBA-II Season 2 Welterweight EOY Touranment - 1st Round
Halifax Forum, Halifax, Nova Scotia (CANADA)
18 April 2009

1st Round Results:

#1 - CH-Henry Armstrong 20-0-0 (19) vs. #16 - Paul Fujii 28-16-0 (26)

The biggest buzz in the UTBA-II this season was the arrival of rookie WW Henry Armstrong. Drafted by the Muckboys with the #3 overall pick, Armstrong has steamrolled everyone so far and enters the tournament with an undefeated 20-0-0 (19) record. His opponent Paul Fujii is no stranger - having already lost twice (both by KO8) to Armstrong. The oddmakers are setting the over-under on a KO in this fight at round 8.

Bout Result:

CH-Henry Armstrong W-KO7 Paul Fujii

Was there any doubt about this outcome. Many have compared this match to a 1st grader picking a fight with the captain of the highschool football team. Fujii at least tried to be competitive, or at least stay on his feet. On both counts he failed again, getting dropped in the 5th and again for the 10-count in the 7th.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#8 - John H Stracey 31-12-0 (31) vs. #9 - Crisanto Espana 27-14-3 (21) 1DQ

First meeting between these two bangers. Stracey was traded to the Nebraska Corn Jabbers as a hired gun to take out Zab Judah. He is not a distance fighter. All 31 of his victories have been by knockout. Espana finished the season with 15 victories and outshined teammate Arturo Gatti all season.

Bout Result:

John H Stracey W-TKO13 Crisanto Espana

Good contest between these two fighters. Espana scored a flash knockdown in the 7th, but it was clear that Stracey was not hurt. Stracey finally did what he does best in the 13th, and knocked down Espana. Although he rose to his feet, the fight was stopped before the end of the round.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#5 - Miguel Angel Cotto 34-7-3 (27) vs. #12 - Randy Shields 26-16-2 (11)

Cotto and Shields have faced each other 5 times, including a 15-round decison won by Cotto in last season's EOY tournament 2nd round. Overall Cotto has dominated the series with winning 4 of the 5 bouts. Shields' best showing was a Draw. Shields must be tired of losing to this guy.

Bout Result:

Miguel Angel Cotto W-DQ7 Randy Shields

With nothing to lose, Shields came out strong and pressed the action for the first few rounds. The bout was still a toss-up on the judges scorecards, but Shields must have felt the bout slipping away. Tarnishing an otherwise clean bout, Shields deliberately landed a very low blow on Cotto in full view of the referee who had no choice but to disqualify Shields and award Cotto another victory.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#4 - Lloyd Honeyghan 37-7-1 (20) vs. #13 - Billy Lynch 28-16-2 (23) 1DQ

Another first meeting between fighters. Lloyd Honeyghan is without question the best fighter on the Coventry Hitmen squad. He finished the regular season 18-1-1 and his only loss was a disputed split decison. In fact, only 2 other boxers on the Hitmen team sported better than .500 records. Billy Lynch hails from the Hebron Haymakers stable but was traded to Heavy Leather Promotions in the second half of the season. He finished the season with a 7-1 record but lost his final bout by DQ. Of note: Honeyghan got bounced in the 1st round of the tournament last season.

Bout Result:

Lloyd Honeyghan Draw-15 Billy Lynch

(Immediate Rematch has been ordered)

Billy Lynch W-T8 (c) Lloyd Honeyghan

Uneventful first bout except for the knockdown scored by Lynch in the 10th round. The rematch started off very badly for Honeyghan due to a severe cut. The cut was reopened in the 4th and again in the 8th. At that point, the referee stopped the bout stating that the cut was too severe for Honeyghan to continue. Honeyghan now is 0-2 in the EOY Tournament.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#3 - Zab Judah 37-9-1 (22) vs. #14 - Carlos Quintana 29-24-0 (25)

Judah and Quintana meet for the 1st time in this match. Judah compiled 16 regular season wins and 3 playoff wins this season. He also made it to the semi-finals of last season's EOY tournament. Quintana finsihed 12-8 in the regular season and 2-4 in the playoffs. He was knocked out of last season's EOY tournament by 8th round TKO in the opening match.

Bout Result:

Zab Judah W-U15 Carlos Quintana

Zab dominated the first 4 rounds of the fight, but then seemed to get bored. Quintana mounted a rally and the fight got interesting. Sensing that the tables had turned, Judah picked up the pace as Quintana started to fade and scores knockdowns in both the 14th and 15th rounds. Quintana manages to survive until the final bell.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#6 - Thomas Damgaard 33-11-4 (26) vs. #11 - Adolph Pruitt 27-14-1 (15)

Thomas Damgaard began the season as part of Heavy Leather Promotions, but was traded to Hebron Haymakers for Billy Lynch. On paper, Damgaard looks to be the overwhelming favorite in this fight despite the fact that Pruitt managed 12 victories this season. They have fought each other twice before, each winning once.

Bout Result:

Adolph Pruitt W-U15 Thomas Damgaard

The easiest way to explain this fight is that Damgaard embarrassed himself. While not the most talented fighter, Pruitt danced circles around Damgaard causing him to miss most of his ineffective punches. Pruitt even managed to score a knockdown in Round 6. The highlight for Damgaard was cutting Pruitt in the 14th with a head butt coming out of a clinch. When the fight was over, Pruitt had landed over 50% of his punches while Damgaard landed a pathetic 12% of his punches.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#7 - Juan Lazcano 34-15-0 (27) vs. #10 - Johnny Bumphus 32-18-2 (20)

The 2nd member of the Nebraska Corn Jabbers to qualify for the tournament is Juan Lazcano. He finished 15-5 this season and 1-1 in the playoffs. Last season, he went 2-1 in the EOY Tournament, beating both Lloyd Honeyghan and Thomas Damgaard before losing to Cocoa Kid. Johnny Bumphus finished the season 14-6 and 3-3 in the playoffs for the UTBA-II Champion Bonner Springs Bald Beavers. This is his first appearance in the EOY tournament. It is their first meeting.

Bout Result:

Johnny Bumphus W-U15 Juan Lazcano

A tactical bout without much action. Bumphus scored a late knockdown in round 11. Bumphus was cut in round 11 and 14.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#2 - Cocoa Kid 35-6-3 (8) vs. #15 - Mark Breland 25-17-1 (20)

Cocoa Kid won last season's EOY Tournament and became the 1st UTBA-II Welterweight Champion. He made 4 successful defenses before losing the title to Henry Armstrong. Kid is looking towards a rematch. As for Breland, he finished the season 11-9-1 and went 0-2 in the playoffs. He has also lost to Armstrong twice during the season. Last season, Breland lost his first rournd EOY Tournament match to teammate Paul Fujii. This is the first time these fighters have fought.

Bout Result:

Cocoa Kid W-U15 Mark Breland

Kid wins the bout by 2 points in a match closer than expected. Breland saw early on that Kid could not hurt him and pressed the action, winning rounds on aggression alone. But in the end, the former WW champ was just too good for Breland.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Will this end up with an Armstorng - Kid rematch???

Quarterfinal Matches:

#1 - CH-Henry Armstrong vs. #8 - John H Stracey

#5 - Miguel Angel Cotto vs. #13 - Billy Lynch

#3 - Zab Judah vs. #11 - Adolph Pruitt

#2 - Cocoa Kid vs. #10 - Johnny Bumphus

Season 2 EOY Tournament - Lightweight (1st Round)

UTBA-II Season 2 Lightweight EOY Touranment - 1st Round
Color Line Arena, Altona, Hamburg (GERMANY)
19 April 2009

1st Round Results:

#1 - CH-Art Aragon 27-12-2 (15) vs. #16 - Rolando Navarrete 22-17-6 (17)

Two-time LW Champion Art Aragon has a 5-1-1 record in title defenses and finished the regular season with 14 wins. In last season's EOY tournament, he was beaten in his first match by Jose Miguel Cotto. Rolando Navarrete is also a former two-time LW Champion with 3 successfull defenses to his credit. He was knocked out in the 6th round in the opening round match of last season's EOY Tournament. These two fighters are no strangers to each other. Each has won once in addition to 2 draws.

Bout Result:

CH-Art Aragon W-TKO8 (c) Rolando Navarrete

A very good 5th meeting between these two fighters. Aragon cut Navarrete in round 3. The cut was reopened in the 6th prompting the stoppage.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#8 - Artur Grigorian 37-12-3 (25) 1DQ vs. #9 - Roberto Duran 15-5-0 (14) 1DQ

First meeting between these two fighters. Grigorian finished the regular season 18-2 and had a 4-1-1 record in the playoffs. Roberto Duran briefly held the LW Title, but lost to Rolando Navarrete in his first defense. As a rookie, he won 15 bouts this season.

Bout Result:

Roberto Duran W-U15 Artur Grigorian

Duran inflicted a lot of damage on the rugged Grigorian in this fight. He scored a quick knockdown in round 2 and also cut Grigorian in round 8. The cut was reopend in round 9 and again in round 10, but Grigorian's corner did a great job keeping it closed in the final rounds. When the cards were tallied, Duran won on 2 cards by 6 points and by 7 points on the third.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#5 - Jose Luis Castillo 33-10-0 (30) vs. #12 - Buzzsaw Yamabe 24-14-2 (12)

Castillo won his first 16 bouts during the regular season, but stumbled 1-3 in his last four. In last season's EOY tournament, he lost in the sem-final round to Beau Jack after wins over Andy Ganigan and Carlos Navarro. Buzzsaw Yamabe finished the regular season 13-6-1 and makes his first trip to the EOY Tournament. This is the 1st meeting for these fighters.

Bout Result:

Buzzsaw Yamabe W-TKO8 Jose Luis Castillo

Castillo must have drank some of the Bink Kool-Aid prior to this match. He seemed very disinterested in this fight and it showed. For his part, Buzzsaw Yamabe seemed determined to represent the Baltimore Binks well and shortly after scoring a knockdown in the 8th, the fight was stopped giving him the TKO victory.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#4 - Edwin Valero 41-11-1 (37) vs. #13 - Robin Blake 34-20-0 (24)

Another match between teammates - this time with the Hebron Haymakers. Valero comes in with 16 regular season and 4 playoff wins while Blake enters with 11 regular season and 2 playoff wins against identical competition. Both have EOY experience: Valero lost his only EOY match to Beau Jack by first round KO while Blake knocked out Kenny Lane in 4 but was KO'd himself in 10 by Michael Katsidis in last season's tournament.

Bout Result:

Edwin Valero W-KO6 Robin Blake

Valero showed no compassion for his less talented teammate. He quickly set the pace by scoring a knockdown in the very 1st round. Blake hung on until the 6th, where he was knocked down 4 times in less than 2 minutes. After the 4th knockdown, Blake remained prone and unmoving on the canvas which prompted medical personnel to rush into the ring.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#3 - Michael Katsidis 35-10-1 (30) vs. #14 - Kenny Lane 25-14-2 (6) 1DQ

Katsidis and Lane meet for the first time in the tournament. Katsidis was the winner of last season's EOY tournament and claimed the first LW Title. His reign was short-lived, losing the belt in his 2nd defense against Ad Wolgast. Kenny Lane won 12 bouts during the regular season. He also has EOY tournament experience, but in his only bout, was KO'd by Robin Blake in the 4th round of their match.

Bout Result:

Michael Katsidis W-KO10 Kenny Lane

Katsidis knocked down Lane in the 5th and then again in the 7th. Lane responed well and knocked down Katsidis in the 8th. Katsidis ended the bout with another knockdown in the 8th.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#6 - Beau Jack 36-11-1 (20) vs. #11 - Jose Miguel Cotto 33-10-0 (30)

Beau Jack was last season's EOY Tournament runner-up, losing in the finals to champion Michael Katsidis. This season, he won 21 fights - 17 in the regular season and 4 more in the playoffs. Jose Miguel Cotto finished the regular season 13-7 and went 1-1 in last season's tournament. Jack and Cotto have split their two previous bouts. Their second encounter was won by Beau Jack in the EOY Tournament 2nd round by KO in 9.

Bout Result:

Beau Jack W-U15 Jose Miguel Cotto

Beau Jack tried to end this one early by scoring a knockdown in the 1st. After that, this was a pretty even bout with neither fighers getting hurt. In the end, Beau Jack wins again, by 1 point on 2 cards and 2 points on the third.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#7 - Carlos Navarro 36-7-0 (28) vs. #10 - Ray Mancini 31-16-1 (27)

Antother first time meeting between fighters. Carlos Navarro is another former LW Champion. His brief reign lasted 1 bout, losing his first defense. In last season's tournament, he KO'd Cornelius Boza-Edwards in 5, but lost by 10th round TKO to Jose Luis Castillo. Ray Mancini won 14 bouts in the regular season but lost both of his playoff bouts. He also has tournament experience from last season, beating Alex Arthur by TKO in 5, then losing by TKO to Alexis Arguello in 10.

Bout Result:

Carlos Navarro W-KO4 Ray Mancini

After 3 uneventful rounds, Navarro went to work in round 4. He knocked down Mancini 3 times in the round. Mancini was only able to answer the count twice.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#2 - Alexis Arguello 36-7-0 (28) vs. #15 - Cornelius Boza-Edwards 29-16-0 (22)

Arguello qualified for his 2nd EOY tournament as the #2 seed. He is yet another former LW Champion who lost his title in his first defense against Rolando Navarrete. Last season he lost to Michael Katsidis in the tournament semi-final round after posting victories over Rolando Navarrete and Ray Mancini. Boza-Edwards enters his 2nd tournament after a successful 4-0 run in the playoffs. Last season, he lost in his opening tournament match to Carlos Navarro. Boza-Edwards holds a victory over Arguello in their only previous meeting.

Bout Result:

Cornelius Boza-Edwards W-KO1 Alexis Arguello

Another disappointment for Arguello. Clearly he did not expect such an onslaught from Boza-Edwards to start the fight. After 3 knockdowns it was over. Boza-Edwards moves on.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Interesting matches for the second round. Will Duran win it all as a rookie, or will Katsidis win it all for the 2nd consecutive season.

Quarterfinal Matches:

#1 - CH-Art Aragon vs. #9 - Roberto Duran

#4 - Edwin Valero vs. #12 - Buzzsaw Yamabe

#3 - Michael Katsidis vs. #6 - Beau Jack

#7 - Carlos Navarro vs. #15 - Cornelius Boza-Edwards

Not quite 1 in a million, but 1 in 2,000 isn't exactly common!

The only Bink to ever advance does so again. Please, someone upset Armstrong!

Battling Buzzsaw makes Baltimore Binks berry proud! Two Binks have advanced!!!

Congratulations Mike, after carrying a woeful team on his back during season 1, Jack Delaney bows out early after handing Roy Jones Jr his only loss of his career during the first EOY tournament.

Just curious..shouldnt Wolgast have been a part of the lightweight tourney? He may not have qualified but I am almost sure that he was in the top 16. Even if he was supposed to be in the running..its no big deal and I definitely would not want anything to be replayed..just curious. Peace fellas.

Rolando Navarrete qualified for the #16 seed in the LW Tournament with a PFP of 892.9

#17 Genaro Hernandez finished next with 883.7

#18 Ad Wolgast finished with 865.5

Even though Wolgast finished 15-5 during the regular season, he did suffer a couple of very bad losses which hurt his PfP:

L-KO3 to 4-rated Justin Juuko (-89.70 pfp)
L-U12 to 4-rated Cesar Orta (-85.79 pfp)

Hope this clears things up.

He probably was inundated with letters like that but still was saying in the nineties how great fans are and how much he appreciates them.

The world could use more men like Mark Fidrych. I feel like crying again.

I must admit that I didn't know who Fidrych was until his tragic death. Being from Australia I don't have the same knowledge of the history of American sports as you guys in the USA do but from what I've read of him he was clearly a fantastic person and a great player.

It makes me look forward to the time in my MLB dynasty when he comes into the league. I am really hoping he has a longer career in it than he did in real life and that he becomes one of the real stars of the dynasty.

That would be fitting, for him and Fernando Valenzuela, 2 pitchers who had the tiger by their tail and phenomenal rookie seasons (and maybe Vida Blue?)! Maybe Rocky Colavito will still be slugging them for the Cleveland Blues!

Season 2 EOY Tournament - Featherweight

Current two-time FW Champion Bernard Taylor makes his first appearance in the EOY Tournament. He won 16 regular season bouts and went undefeated 4-0 in the playoffs. He has made 8 successful title defenses during his 2 reigns. Davey Moore started the season winning 10 of his first 14 matches, but limped to the finish line losing 7 of his last 8 including both of his playoff matches. Moore made it to last season's tournament semi-finals - losing by TKO3 to Jorge Monsalvo. Taylor and Moore have met once before with Moore winning by TKO in the 4th.

Bout Result:

CH-Bernard Taylor W-KO5 Davey Moore

Not much of a surprise after Moore mailed it in at the end of the season. The champion looked very impressive taking charge early and putting the lights out on Moore in the 5th.

Criqui and Hodkinson have never fought.

Bout Result:

Eugene Criqui W-U15 Paul Hodkinson

Nothing spectacular in this bout. No knockdowns or cuts, but each fighter had mild eye swelling. Criqui wins comfortably by 4 points on two scorecards and 5 points on the third.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#5 - Jorge Monsalvo 35-18-1 (30) vs. #12 - Battling Battalino 25-14-5 (7)

Jorge Monsalvo had a successful 15-5 regular season, but a horrible 1-5 record in the playoffs for the Hebron Haymakers. Last season, Monsalvo made it all the way to the EOY tournament finals by beating Alejandro Gonzalez, Battling Battalino and Davey Moore before losing to Celestino Caballero. Battalino had a difficult 11-8-1 regular season. He lost to Monsalvo in last season's tournament after beating Ruben Olivares.

Bout Result:

Battling Battalino W-KO13 Jorge Monsalvo

After a pretty even first half of the fight, Monsalvo scores a knockdown in round 8. Battalino responds by knocking down Monsalvo once in teh 10th and 3 more times in the 13th. Monsalvo could not beat the count after the 3rd knockdown.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#3 - Celestino Caballero 44-10-2 (36) vs. #14 - Enrique Sanchez 27-15-1 (22)

Enriquie Sanchez also won 14 fights this regular season and participated in the EOY tournament last season - losing a split decison to Derrick Gainer. Caballero has beaten Sanchez twice, once in a title defense.

Celestino Caballero W-TKO5 Enrique Sanchez

Caballero stormed out quickly in this bout and battered Sanchez. The bout came to a dramatic end after the 2nd knockdown in round 5.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#6 - Alejandro Gonzalez 31-15-1 (25) vs. #11 - Ruben Olivares 28-14-1 (21)

Alejandro Gonzales finished 14-6 in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs. The highlight of his season was capturing the LW Title with a 3rd round KO of Somsak Sithchatchawal, but lost in his 1st title defense by KO7 to Celestino Caballero. In last season's EOY tournament, he was knocked out in the 9th round by Jorge Monsalvo. Ruben Olivares finished the regular season 15-5. He lost a unanimous 12-round decsion to Celestino Caballero in his lone title shot. He also lost in last season's EOY tournament by KO in the 9th round to Battling Battalino. This is their 1st meeting.

This was a pretty back an forth fight with Ruben Olivares dishing out more than he got. Olivares was cut in the 8th but scored 3 knockdowns in the 8th, 13th and 15th rounds.

--------------------------------------------------------------

#7 - Chalky Wright 26-10-4 (9) vs. #10 - Somsak Sithchatchawal 33-17-3 (23)

Chalky Wright had an impressive 17-2-1 record this season. Of his 2 losses, one was a quick 1st round TKO stoppage to then FW champion Somsak Sithchatchawal. After that loss, Wright did not lose another fight for the rest of the season - 15-0-1. Sithchatchawal finished with 13 regular season and 4 playoff victories. He is yet another former FW champion who made 3 successful defenses before losing the title to Alejandro Gonzalez. He lost in last season's EOY tournament to teammate Celestino Caballero.

Has anyone tried contacting Scot recently? It would be nice to know if everything is okay with him. Seems amazing to me that a job could keep someone away from visiting a website even once for three solid months.

I would NEVER disparage a member of the championship team! The 2 years in a row champion! No way! Cocoa Kid has to win twice more before possibly meeting Henry, and he has lost 6 to date, so its no lock. I just remember Armstrong, after losing the first round big, cutting the Kid in the 2nd and getting a TKO on cuts in the 3rd, winning the title after 4 or 5 fights! He is, to date, unbeatable.
