Carl Gizzi, Wales, 2-0-0 vs. Ould Donald McBane, Scotland, 7-0-0

March 30, 1980 - Caird Hall, Dundee, Scotland. Both fighters open up in the first round exchanging hard shots. Gizzi lands a shot that opens up a bad cut above the right eye of McBane. Gizzi starts to target the right eye and McBane has little to defend himself. The doctor comes up to the apron to take a look and the fight has been waved off.

Winner: Gizzi
Result: (TKO3)(Cuts)
Cards: 19-19, on all three cards
Punch stats: Gizzi 102-160, 63.8% - 29-145, 20%

Damian Norris, Cuba, 1-0-0 (1) vs. Curtis ‘Hitman’ Murray, Barbados, 1-2-0 (1)

March 11, 1980 - Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados. A little inactivity, hometown judges, a crucial point deduction in the 9th, all possible reasons for a split-decision loss.

Punch stats: Norris 210-651, 32.3% - Murray 201-786, 25.6%

I don't know if it was Mercer as much as it was Sutton's heart and courage. I couldn't believe that he kept getting up. Some TC's really can surprise you.

USBA Title Fight - March 28, 1980

[CH] Max Baer, USA, 11-0-0 (11) vs. [#1] Mike DeJohn, USA, 10-0-0 (7)

March 28, 1980 - Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, NJ, USA. Max Baer is making his first defense of his USBA Title, tonight against the USBA #1 ranked contender, Mike DeJohn. I believe that Max Baer is set to make a long run at the top and will continue to punish anybody in his way to defend his USBA Title. Baer has started his career with 11 consecutive wins by KO and is a hard and relentless puncher. DeJohn earned his way to tonight’s fight by beating previously unbeaten, Rahman Ali (TKO7), on 1980-01-28. Only one of Baer’s eleven fights has gone past the fifth round, a (KO7) versus Jess Williams on 1979-01-02. Both fighters have one common opponent, Willie Ball. DeJohn won (UD10), while Baer won by (TKO5). DeJohn lands a combination that puts Baer down within the first minute of the fight. The champ is up but is visibly hurt. DeJohn rushes in to try to finish the fight and lands a tremendous hook that puts Baer down for the second time here in the first round. Baer gets to his feet at the count of 4. DeJohn traps Baer against the ropes but misses with a huge shot. Baer is in the corner as both fighters exchange punches. DeJohn lands a jolting uppercut followed up by a hard hook to the head that sends Baer down for the third time. The referee has stopped the fight due to the three-knockdown rule applied by the bylaws of the USBA. We have a huge upset tonight, as Mike DeJohn becomes the new USBA Champion with a (TKO1) over Max Baer.

Winner: DeJohn
Result: (TKO1)
Cards: N/A
Punch stats: DeJohn 32-132, 24.2% - Baer 6-6, 100%

Proud Kilimanjaro, Zimbabwe, 2-0-0 (2) vs. Peter ‘The Sniper’ Smith, South Africa, 2-1-1

March 25, 1980 - Sun City Superbowl, Sun City, NW, South Africa. Proud takes the crowd out of the fight right away by taking the first round with clean and effective punching. The next two rounds are up for grabs, with Smith probably getting the edge with last minute flurries that incite the crowd. The 4th and 5th are big rounds for Kilimanjaro, as he has Smith hurt and in trouble in both rounds. Proud shots a lightning bolt of a shot that puts Smith down in the 6th. Proud is in complete control of this fight as he controls the 7th, but has been warned for the 2nd time about low blows. Smith is down again in the 9th and will need a knockout to win this fight as we go to the 10th and final round.

Winner: Kilimanjaro
Result: (UD10)
Cards: 98-91, on all three cards in favor of Kilimanjaro
Punch stats: Kilimanjaro 296-662, 44.7% - Smith 169-647, 26.1%
TPE: 0.25
Streak: W3

George Foreman, USA, 2-0-0 (2) vs. J.D. ‘The Natural’ Chapman, USA, 4-1-0 (4)

March 20, 1980 - Alltel Arena, North Little Rock, AR, USA. It looks like Chapman is satisfied to stay in the middle of the ring and slug it out, as both fighters exchange heavy, handed blows. I don’t know if I like the idea for Chapman and don’t see the fight lasting that long if he keeps employing that strategy. ‘The Natural’ starts the 2nd round off strong, but is squared up in front of Foreman and pays the price in the second half of the round. Chapman is hurt in the 3rd and goes down in the middle of the round. Chapman is getting hit on a regular basis, again in the 4th. A sudden clash of heads and there seems to be a cut over Foreman’s right eye. An overhand right catches Chapman flush and he goes down for a count of nine. Chapman shows a lot of heart by continuing to get to his feet, but the ref steps in and correctly stops the fight here in the 5th.

Winner: Foreman
Result: (TKO5)
Cards: 40-35, 40-35, 39-36, all in favor of Foreman
Punch stats: Foreman 140-370, 37.8% - Chapman 39-58, 67.2%
TPE: 0.25
Streak: W3

Cassius Clay, USA, 2-0-0 (2) vs. Calvin Brock, USA, 7-0-0 (6)

March 24, 1980 - Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC, USA. A spectacular crowd has filled the stadium to see tonight’s main event between two undefeated heavyweights, Cassius Clay and Calvin Brock. The first two rounds are pretty even, but it is evident that Clay’s hand speed is giving Brock some problems. Clay is firing the jab and continues to split Brock’s guard. A wonderful combination puts Brock down in the last fifteen seconds of the 3rd round. Brock manages to get up but may need more than the minute break to shake out all those cobwebs. Clay is unable to follow up in round four as Brock seems to have recovered from the previous round’s knockdown. Clay controls the middle rounds with an effective jab, combinations of punches, elusive defense and ring generalship. Brock’s punches have lost all their steam as he looks to be fatigued. Brock will need a knockout to pull out this fight as we head to the last two rounds. Brock has a decent ninth but is unable to mount any sort of attack to finish the fight in what should be a pretty one-sided decision as we go to the cards.

Winner: Clay
Result: (UD10)
Cards: 97-92, 96-93, 97-92, all three cards in favor of Clay
Punch stats: Clay 237-500, 47.4% - Brock 130-637, 20.4%
TPE: 0.25
Streak: W3

Winner: Witherspoon
Result: (KO5)
Cards: 39-36, 39-36, 40-35, all cards in favor of Witherspoon

Joe Frazier, USA, 2-0-0 (2) vs. Joe Hill, USA, 1-3-0

March 13, 1980 - The Plex, N.Charleston, SC, USA. Joe Hill gives Frazier a good fight and stays on his feet for seven rounds until the ref steps in to stop the fight believing that Hill could no longer defend himself and was taking unwarranted shots to the head.

Winner: Frazier
Result: (TKO7)
Cards: 59-55, 60-55, 60-55, all three cards in favor of Frazier
Punch stats: Frazier 232-502, 46.2% - Hill 42-101, 41.6%

CABO Title Fight - March 31, 1980

Roddy MacDonald, Canada, 10-1-1 (10) vs. Jose Giorgetti, Argentina, 10-0-0 (9)

March 31, 1980 - Halifax Forum, Halifax, NS, Canada. Jose Giorgetti takes the place of Troy Ross, who decided to back out of the CABO Title rematch, for the opportunity to fight for the CBC Commonwealth Title in early April. MacDonald and Ross fought to a draw in January for the CABO belt. Giorgetti comes off an impressive (KO6) on 1980-02-12, in a fight that saw him travel to Fort Worth, TX, USA, to fight Al Kaufman. Giorgetti completely man-handles MacDonald in the opening round as MacDonald doesn’t look nearly as impressive as he did against Ross. Giorgetti drops MacDonald twice in the 2nd round and ends the fight to capture the CABO Title in impressive fashion. MacDonald squanders two opportunities to win a regional belt and may have a hard time putting himself in the position for a title shot ever again, once all the fighters start reaching ranked status.

Winner: Giorgetti
Result: (KO2)
Cards: 10-9, on all scorecards in favor of Giorgetti
Punch stats: Giorgetti 36-133, 27.1% - MacDonald, 6-26, 23.1%
