I can't be 100% but seeing that rugby was a popular sport at the time and that loads of rugby teams played in hoops then it could because of that but don't quote me, Darlington actually played in blue and white stripes when they first began to play in the late 1800's.

My favourites over the years have been Middlesborough 1970's home, QPR 1975 home, West Brom 1976 away, Liverpool mid 60's 70's home, Man Utd early 70's home, Scotland early 70's home, Crystal Palace mid 70's home,Birmingham 1975 home, best season for kits overall imo was the 1975 season.

Hull City 1992 is the worst uniform I have ever seen...
I would have demanded a transfer just so I did not have to play in that.
