Logically, everybody is very good in the league...I edited their ratings and talent so that they would be based on the career average of each player...and logically the way I think OOTPB works, every player can't be very good...some are great, some are good, some are average...and I suppose some will have to be fair and poor. CHICAGO (47-39) 1 3 0 DETROIT (49-37) 4 11 0 WP: Bunning (7-3 3.30) LP: Walsh (6-7 3.15) Pierce (8th) HR: Chi - Lundy (2) Det - Crawford (1) The Tigers' Jim Bunning set down the White Sox on 3 hits and Sam Crawford (.278) 4-4 and a homer and Birdie Tebbetts (.290) 2-4 topped the hitters...each drove in a pair of runs. Tomorrow is another day of doubleheaders.
Monday is an off day. Tuesday will be the Allstar game. Rumor has it that teams may make some roster changes to get ready for the stretch runs and the last half of the season. |

Spent the last 12 days in the Smokies and the Blue Ridge Mountains...great weather...cool in the low 70's daytime...around 65 at night...no humidity...saw the Montgomery Biscuits (imho worst nickname in baseball) and the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Southern League, but a beautiful stadium...they sell more merchandise than any other minor league team...(shows you how much I know about nicknames...must not be as bad I think it is)...Tennesse Smokies in Knoxville area (Sevierville)...nice new stadium, but nothing special...Smokies played the West Tennessee Diamondjacks...Asheville Tourists and Augusta Green Jackets of the South Atlantic League (Sally League)...ballpark has fairly recently-renovated stands and bleachers...still in the same exact site as the old McCormick Field...which was the second oldest minor league park still in use...Asheville ballpark is only average...but seems to be cut out of rock with high bluffs with woods and trees behind the fences...right field is unique (kind of like the Green Monster) and is only 300 feet with a 25-foot fence...right center is only 325 (the 25 foot fence extends into right center about 50-75 feet from the foul line)...saw a Augusta player unwisely try to get a double on a hit into the gap...he was thrown out easily (he must have forgotten where he was playing)...Birmingham's Rickwood Field (used for the movie "Cobb") is the oldest, but used only once a year for the Rickwood Classic, which I plan to attend...they dress in vintage uniforms for the Barons' Southern League game against the Mississippi Braves (based in Pearl, Mississippi and have a new stadium)...and finished the trip with a "Rainy Night in Georgia" at Turner Field...a game between the Braves and the Brewers...just about the whole game was played in a light to medium rain...Turner is a nice stadium, but like all major league teams charge outrageous prices for tickets, merchandise and concessions...$8.25 for a hamburger is ridiculous...no I didn't buy one...got a good slice of hot pizza for $5, which was about $3 more than it was worth...That makes 10 major league stadiums I have seen...Houston's Minute Maid and Astrodome...Atlanta's Turner and Fulton County Stadium...still have 22 more to go...hope to see all of the MLB fields before I give up the ghost and take a stroll into the tall corn in the field of dreams...I have seen Fenway, Yankee Stadium, Shea, Citizens Bank, Arlington, and Jack Murphy...Fenway and Yankee Stadium were special because of their character and history, but Arlington and Citizens are very fine places to watch a game...but all are grossly overpriced...it costs about $150 for me and my wife to see a game with good seats, get a coke, hot dog and dessert treat...there is no way I will pay the prices they want for caps and jerseys. I will make only one trip to each stadium at those prices...I will stick to minor league games, which are much more reasonable as far as ticket prices and parking (total cost is usually $16-$20 for tickets, parking and concesssions), but are beginning to raise their concessions and merchandise prices...it looks like I may just eat before a game or after a game.
