Highly unlikely this year as I will have 3 or 4 horses rated very close to each other. In real life there were 3 different winners in 1947 -Jet Pilot won the Derby on a sloppy track, Faultless won the Preakness and Phalanx claimed the Belmont. Phalanx will be the favourite entering the Derby but it was one of the slowest fields of that era.

Faultless may also have an outside chance at the Triple Crown but there is far more excitement from their owners, Calumet Farm, about their likely entry next year, named Citation.

STANLEY CUP FINALS
LEAFS STAY ALIVE WITH 4-2 WIN TO FORCE GAME SEVEN
Ted Kennedy and Howie Meeker each had a goal and an assist to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs past the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 in Game six of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Leaf victory forces game seven which will be at The Olympia in Detroit on Saturday night.

The Leafs struck early for the only goal of the first period when Meeker and Harry Watson teamed up to set up Kennedy in the slot. The Leafs regular season scoring leader made no mistake beating Detroit goaltender Harry Lumley to the stick side. Detroit tied it early in the second period when red-hot Red Wing Sid Abel scored his 5th goal in the past 4 games. However, Toronto answered less than a minute later when Meeker gave the Leafs the lead for good. A Gaye Stewart powerplay marker midway through the second period increased the Toronto lead to 3-1.

Detroit had some hope early in the third when playoff scoring leader Billy Taylor got a quick one for the Red Wings but again Toronto responded as Vic Lynn increased the Leaf lead to 2 goals once again.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
MELTON PITCHES ANOTHER GEM FOR PIRATES
Cliff Melton is in midseason form once again for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 4 time Cy Young winner tossed a complete game 6-hit shutout to lead the Bucs to a 6-0 victory over visiting Cincinnati. In 2 starts this season Melton is 2-0 with a 0.53 era. He also chipped in at the plate yesterday, getting 2 hits and an rbi. The big man at the plate for Pittsburgh yesterday was lead-off man Jim Russell who went 4-for-5. Sophomore outfielder Ralph Kiner had 2 hits and drove in a pair of runs. Red rookie Art Houtteman was roughed up in his major league debut, allowing 6 earned runs and 12 hits in 5 innings.

In other National League action rookie Earl Torgeson's rbi single in the 11th inning proved the difference as Boston beat Brooklyn 7-6. The score was 3-2 Dodgers entering the top of the 9th when Boston plated 3 runs mainly due to a Butch Nieman triple and a Tommy Thompson doubled. However, the hometown Dodgers got three of their own in the bottom of the 8th to retake the lead. Boston again rallied as pinch-hitter Joe Rullo delivered a sacrifice fly to score chuck Workman with the tying run to send it into extra innings.

New York salvaged one victory out of their three game series with Philadelphia. Outfielders Hank Lieber and Vince Dimaggio each homered in a 4-2 Giants win. Dimaggio had 3 hits in the game to increase his batting average to .545

In the other contest the St Louis Cardinals beat the Cubs 7-3 in Chicago behind a complete game 7-hitter from Ernie White.

In the American League outfielder Jeff Heath had 3 hits and an rbi to help Cleveland to a 3-1 win over the St Louis Browns. The Tribe, at 3-0, are the only remaining undefeated team in the major leagues. Johnny Babich got the win despite allowing 11 hits and having to pitch out of trouble just about every inning. It was a hard luck day for Browns starter Tom Baker, who allowed just 6 hits.

Washington laid a beating on the Boston Red Sox. Phil Cavaretta had 3 hits and 5 rbi's to pace the hometown Sens to a 14-2 victory. Milo Candini pitched a 6-hitter for the win. It was just one of those days for the Bosox, who committed 5 errors including 2 by Ted Williams in the game.

The White Sox hung on to win the rubber match in their 3 game homestand against Philadelphia. The A's scored 3 times in the top of the ninth but fell just short, losing 4-3. Tom Hafey and Danny Litwhiler each drove in a pair of runs for the winners. White Sox reliever Gordon Maltzberger got Elmer Valo to ground out with the tying run on third base to end the game and preserve the victory for starter Eddie Lopat.

SUGAR RAY ROBINSON PUTS WELTERWEIGHT TITLE ON THE LINE TONIGHT
World Welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson will defend his title against Tommy Bell this evening in Philadelphia. This will be the first defense for the 26 year old champion since winning the postwar title with an 11th round knock out of Marty Servo last September. Robinson is 11-1 with 10 of his victories coming by knockout. His only loss occurred early in the postwar tournament when he was cut by Charley Fusari and the ref stopped the fight in the 10th round.

Bell is considered to be the 7th best welterweight fighter in the world but he has not faced a lot of top level opponents. His career mark is 27-2 but most bouts were against second rate fighters. He does have wins against Jackie Wilson and Izzy Jannazzo, who are ranked 2nd and 19th respectively, but more recently he has been beaten by third ranked Johnny Bratton and 10th ranked Kid Gavilan. As a result Robinson is considered an overwhelming favourite and most experts would be surprised if the fight goes more than 7 rounds.

Two other welterweight bouts have been announced. Top contenders Jackie Wilson and Johnny Bratton have agreed to meet in Bratton's hometown of Chicago on Friday May 25th. The winner is almost assured to be next in line to face Sugar Ray Robinson. Two weeks later Marty Servo and Billy Graham will fight in New York. The two New York City natives are considered the 5th and 6th best welterweights. Meanwhile Cocoa Kid and Kid Gavilan are rumoured to be close to finalizing a bout in late June which is rumoured to be held in Kid's adopted home town of New Haven, Connecticut or possibly in Hartford. There is a good chance that event will take place during or just prior to golf's Insurance City Open in Hartford to try and draw a cross-over audience. The Insurance City Open runs from June 28-July 1.

WELTERWEIGHT BOXING
NEAR UPSET IN PHILADELPHIA
Tommy Bell fought the battle of his life and nearly dethroned World Welterweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson. Instead the fight was declared a draw after the challenger nearly knocked out Robinson in the 12th. The champ did not look to be in peak condition entering the fight, a sign he may have taken Bell too lightly. Robinson did, however, land a couple of vicious punches in the opening round and had Bell staggering but just could not finish him off. Sugar Ray continued to control the bout through the first 5 rounds before the challenger gradually began to assert himself.

In the 12th Bell caught Robinson with a solid counter and sent the champ to the canvas. Robinson recovered by the count of 8 and spent the rest of that round and all of the 13th avoiding Bell. By the 14th the champ was trying to take the fight to Bell but it was clear Robinson had little left in the tank. Both fighters came out swinging in the 15th looking to make a final impression on the judges but in truth neither had enough left to connect with any sort of authority.

The draw likely means Bell will get a rematch perhaps as early as August of this year.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
VAUGHAN HITS FOR CYCLE AS BUCS BLAST BRAVES
Shortstop Arky Vaughan hit for the cycle and drove in 6 runs to help the Pittsburgh Pirates past the Boston Braves 16-3. Bill Elliott also had 3 hits for the Pirates, who improve to 4-2 in National League play. Ken Heintzelman pitched 7 innings for the victory to even his record at 1-1. Boston starter Warren Spahn lasted just 4 innings and was torched for 9 runs, but only 5 were earned. Boston also learned reliever Ed Wright will miss a week to 10 days after straining his shoulder during the game. The one bright spot for the Braves was rookie first baseman Earl Torgeson, who hit his second home run of the season.

In other National League action Pinky May homered as Philadelphia improved to 3-1 with a 7-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the Phillies home opener. Vic Lombardi got the win while Max Macon notched his second save.

Danny Gardella's 2-run double in the top of the 8th proved the difference as New York spoiled the Cardinals home opener 7-5.

Zeke Bonura drove in 4 runs and Pete Reiser had 3 rbi's in Brooklyn's 11-5 win at Cincinnati. Rex Barney went the distance for the Dodgers while Reds starter Harry Feldman failed to survive the second inning. The 27 year old Feldman was used exclusively in relief last season by the Reds and may find himself in the pen again very soon.

Cleveland improves to 4-0 and remains the only unbeaten team in the major leagues after a 2-1 win at Boston. Starting pitchers Max Butcher of the Indians and Boston's Earl Johnson each went the distance allowing just 9 hits all game between them. An error by Boston outfielder Stan Spence proved the difference in the game as it allowed Cleveland to score both their runs.

Archie McKain has yet to allow an earned run as St Louis blanked Washington 7-0. McKain, who pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings against the Yankees on Sunday, went the distance this time allowing just 5 hits. George McQuinn and Cookie Lavagetto homered for the Browns.

Four 8th inning doubles allowed Chicago to beat the Yankees in New York by a 5-2 count. The win drops the Yankees to 1-4 and last in the American League. In the other game Wally Westlake came off the bench in his major league debut to drive in two runs as the Athletics dumped Detroit 3-1. Westlake, the 4th overall pick in the winter draft, was pressed into action after leadoff man Chet Laabs got tossed for arguing a called third strike in the first inning. The rookie drove in 2 runs with an rbi single in his first major league plate appearance.

STANLEY CUP FINALS
GAME SEVEN TONIGHT IN DETROIT
A thrilling best of seven Stanley Cup final will come to its conclusion this evening in Detroit as the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs meet in the seventh and deciding game. The Leafs prolonged the series with a 4-2 victory on home ice Thursday after Detroit had won game 5 in the Motor City by a 3-2 count.

Goaltending will play a big role as both Detroit's Harry Lumley and Toronto's Turk Broda have had a solid playoff run. Broda was amazing in the Leafs semi-final win over the New York Rangers and, aside from a poor performance in a 7-4 Game Two loss to the Wings, has been terrific in the finals. Lumley has been consistant throughout the postseason as well.

If you are looking for a Game Seven offensive hero from the Red Wings then put your money on either Billy Taylor or Sid Abel. Taylor leads all playoff scorers with 6 goals and 14 points while Abel has scored 5 goals in the last four games. For Toronto, scoring leader Ted Kennedy is the Leafs offensive leader but fireplug rookie winger Howie Meeker is always dangerous.

BAA FINALS START TONIGHT IN WASHINGTON
Few observers at the beginning of the playoffs would have forecast a Washington- New York matchup in the best of seven BAA finals. The Capitols, with young coach Red Aurebach and a strong offense led by backcourt mates Bob Feerick and Freddie Scolari, were a no-brainer for the finals but New York's participation comes as a huge shock.

With a .500 record, the worst of the six playoff teams, the Knickerbockers beat both St Louis and Philadelphia to advance to the championship round. That just shows the effects of a short best of three series. In both cases the Knickerbockers won the opener at home and managed to earn a game three victory on their opponents home court.

The series opens on the road this time for New York but one thing remains the same. The Knickerbockers are once again huge underdogs.

Tiger Fan, while I love your dynasty and all the work you put into it...it might be a good idea to maybe split each year into a single thread with links to threads containing previous years.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have considered that although I have not yet completed a full year as I began the dynasty on July 1, 1946. However, in my HOB or History of Baseball dynasty reports from the past, which I did a seperate thread for each year, I had many people wanting the opposite and asking me to post it all together so they could follow along a little easier.

Makes no difference to me, whatever those who follow it prefer,

STANLEY CUP FINALS
WINGS WIN GAME 7 IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
It took double overtime to decide what was certainly the most exciting game seven in recent memory, if not of all time. In the end the heavily favoured Detroit Red Wings prevailed thanks to Sid Abel's 6th goal of the Stanley Cup Finals. The Red Wings captain beat Toronto's Turk Broda 6 minutes into the second overtime to give the Wings a 4-3 win in both the game and the series. Broda was outstanding, turning aside 69 of the 73 shots the Red Wings peppered him with including 25 in overtime. Abel, who also scored the overtime winner in Game 3, was named the Most Valuable Player of the finals.

The Wings took the early lead on Eddie Bruneteau's second goal of the playoffs but Toronto answered quickly with a Bill Ezinicki marker. The teams traded goals in the second period as Gaye Stewart's power play tally gave the Leafs the lead before Jim Conacher tied things up a minute later. In the third Ted Lindsay's 8th goal of the playoffs put Detroit ahead 3-2 while Leaf defenseman Bill Barilko was in the penalty box. It looked like the Lindsay goal would stand up as the game winner until Toronto's Bud Poile tied things up with 1:17 remaining in regulation. The Wings outshot the Leafs 16-13 in the first overtime but Toronto had the best scoring chances, particularily during a penalty called on Detroit defenseman Jack Stewart. However, Harry Lumley held his ground in the Red Wing cage. The Wings came out flying in the second overtime, taking the play to Toronto and on their 9th shot of the stanza were rewarded with Abel's cup winning marker.

NEW YORK STUNS WASHINGTON IN BAA FINALS OPENER
The Cinderella story continues for the New York Knickerbockers. A .500 team that claimed the final playoff spot in the East Division before eliminating St Louis and Philadelphia to advance to the BAA Finals is now just 3 wins away from the first BAA championship. The Knicks stunned Washington on the Capitols home floor, rallying from a 12 point deficiet in the 4th quarter to win the opener of the best of seven league final 63-62.

Game two in the series will be Monday evening in Washington before action shifts to the Big Apple for games 3,4 and if necessary 5.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
YANKS LOSE KELLER FOR SEASON WITH BROKEN WRIST
More bad news for the New York Yankees who suffer their second series injury in a week. Outfielder Charlie Keller, their best hitter, is done for the year after breaking his wrist while making a sliding grab in Saturday's game. Last week the Yankees lost gold glove catcher Bob Scheffing for at least 5 weeks with a shoulder injury.

Keller, who was third in the American League last season with 22 homers, hit .258 a year ago and is a 3 time allstar at leftfield. He had a rough start to the season this time around, batting just .130 and was homerless in 6 games. Unless a trade is made, former Phillie Joe Gallagher, who has been a Yankee backup the past 2 seasons, will likely share the leftfield job with Bud Metheny, another longtime backup in the Yankee outfield. Steve Souchock, a 28 year old outfielder, was called up from AAA Kansas City to fill Keller's roster spot. Souchock was hitting .176 with 1 homer in 5 games at Kansas City this season. He spent most of last year in AAA batting .234 with 11 homers in 87 games but also hit .250 in 16 games with the Yankees.

GAME RECAPS
On the field there was some good news for the Yankees, who got a 6-hit performance from Tiny Bonham in a 5-1 win over Chicago. Frankie Crosetti led the Yankees offense with a pair of homers and 4 rbi's.

Quite a finish in Boston where visiting Cleveland snapped a 2-2 tie with 4 runs in the top of the ninth inning only to see Boston almost complete a comeback in the home half. The Red Sox fell just short in losing 6-5. Ted Williams' third homer of the season accounted for two of the Red Sox 9th inning runs. The Indians remain unbeaten at 5-0.

Wally Judnich's 2-run, 2-out homer in the bottom of the ninth lifted St Louis past Washington 4-2. In Philadelphia, A's reliever Jack Wilson walked the bases loaded in the 11th inning and Detroit turned that into 3 runs and a 4-1 victory over the Athletics.

MUSIAL HELPS CARDINALS SLAY GIANTS 8-6
Stan Musial had 3 hits, including a pair of home runs, to lead the St Louis Cardinals past the New York Giants 8-6 in National League play. Cardinals starting pitcher George Dockins went 8 innings to earn the victory despite allowing a career high 16 hits. Hank Leiber led the New Yorkers with 3 hits.

In Philadelphia new Cubs shortstop Phil Rizzuto had 2 hits and his doubleplay partner Don Johnson had 3 rbi's as Chicago topped Philadelphia 7-3. Vern Olsen went the distance to notch the win for the Cubs.

Bill Elliott and Ralph Kiner each homered and Dick Siebert had 4 hits as the Pittsburgh Pirates hammered the Braves for the second straight day, this time by a score of 13-7. The victory combined with the Phillies loss moved the Pirates into top spot in the National League.

A 3 run homer from catcher Frankie Hayes and a complete game from Arnold Carter helped the Cincinnati Reds drop Brooklyn 8-1. Carter went the distance despite a 45 minute rain delay in the 4th inning. Pete Reiser had a pair of hits for the Dodgers and including last season has a 16 game hitting streak on the go.

A slight change before the next issue is released, well a major change in basketball. As I mentioned earlier in this thread I am incorporating TPB2005 in to my dynasty. The original plan was start a new league with the game beginning with the 1947-48 season but because I want to incorporate some great players from the last few years of TDCB I am going to make the switch now. I hope that does not upset anyone and in the long run it will allow far better coverage and continuity between the college game and the NBA. In the dice game I was playing Washington came back and won 4 straight from New York to claim the inagural BAA title. That will be wiped out based on the new concept for the basketball.

By the way, for anyone who has not checked it out yet, go to http://www.greydogsoftware.com and download the demo. If you love basketball you will love this game. Even if you are just a casual basketball fan, like myself, if you enjoy sports sims (and we all do or we wouldn't be here) do yourself a favour and try the demo. The official release comes out Monday I believe and the game looks and plays fantastic.

For anyone who cares about the background here is how I set up my league with TPB2005. In real life the NBA (or BAA as its predecessor was known) changed cities and folded or added teams quite often from it's inception in 1946-47 thru the 1960's. I wanted some continuity to my league so I decided to go with a 20 team setup using primarily teams from that era but also a couple of ABA named teams to fill out the field.

Here is my league allignment
Code:
		EASTERN CONFERENCE
ATLANTIC DIVISION NORTHEAST DIVISION
New York Knickerbockers Syracuse Nationals
Boston Celtics Pittsburgh Pipers
Baltimore Bullets Buffalo Braves
Philadelphia Warriors Cleveland Cavs
Providence Steamrollers Fort Wayne Pistons

		WESTERN CONFERENCE
MIDWEST DIVISION SOUTH DIVISION
Minneapolis Lakers Dallas Chaparrals
Milwaukee Hawks Cincinnati Royals
Indianapolis Olympians Kentucky Colonels
Chicago Stags New Orleans Jazz
St Louis Bombers Kansas City Kings
I originally wanted to name the Cleveland franchise the Rebels but could not find a Rebels logo so I went with the Cavs.

For anyone who cares how I went through the process of customizing my league the next couple of paragraphs explains the steps. Using default fictional teams within the game I created a 20 team league and then using the export database feature within the game edited the teams to the cities, nicknames and logos I wanted.

Since I wanted my league to be a new league composed entirely of the TDCB created rookies (I had 15 seasons worth of draft files ready to go) I edited the age and experience rating of all players in the original database so they were all 40 years old. This way after two or three years of drafts the original players would all be retired and my TDCB imported players would comprise the entire league. (There are a couple of other steps necessary so for anyone wanting to attempt something like this PM me and I will give you the additional details.)

What I ended up with was an NBA league containing entirely players developed from my TDCB league file. It was an surprisingly simple process and in my mind just another reason why this game will be great. If you dont want to play modern day NBA basketball it is easy to create your own fictional universe.

I simmed from 1932-33 through to where we are today in mid April 1947. I will pick things up with Game 1 of the BAA finals but the teams will be different. So before I begin the finals I will provide a brief background on each of the teams and some of the key players.

Again I apologize to anyone who has followed the basketball and does not feel this is the best time to integrate things but I feel it is because the draft will be coming up soon and I think it will be of more interest with the proper background story.

PREVIEW OF THE TWO FINALISTS
BALTIMORE BULLETS
The leaders of the Bullets are a pair of 11 year veterans. Point guard Peter Warren from Harvard led the Bullets in scoring and is the ninth most prolific scorer in league history. Right behind him is Joseph Mozell who ranks 10th in all-time scoring. Mozell, from Notre Dame was drafted third overall in 1935 draft, one spot behind Warren. Both signed as free agents with the Bullets 8 years ago and were the key pieces in Baltimore's 1941 championship club. The longest serving Bullet is SG Jason Christopherson, who just completed his 9th season with the organization.

DALLAS CHAPARRALS
The two best known Dallas players are Freddie *Scolari, a real life player who saw his production drop off this season due to a couple of injuries, and John Layton who was the NCAA player of the year in 1946. The former University of Texas standout was a three time SWC player of the year and retired as the NCAA's all time career scoring leader. Signed by his hometown team, the Dallas native was eased into the lineup, playing sparingly in the first 3 months of the season. You may also remember Joseph Cunningham, who played a key role on the 1940 NCAA runner up Holy Cross team. He was a senior that season and was in the pros the next season when the Crusaders won the NCAA title.

The Chaparrals surprised Chicago in the Western Conference final and are in search of their first NBA title.

Certainly an upgrade over the dice game, keep up the good work. Oh and could you post a history of the Colonels sort of like you did for UK?

BULLETS FIRE BLANKS IN OPENER AS LAYTON LEADS CHAPS
Rookie pivot John Layton scored 25 points and added 11 rebounds to lead the Dallas Chaparrals to a 97-77 laugher over the Baltimore Bullets in Game One of the league final. Layton, last year's NCAA player of the year and a 3-time SWC player of the year, completely dominated the Baltimore big men, forcing Bullets starting center Preye Pensyl into foul trouble right away.

Stuart Granger added 17 points and Freddie *Scolari 12 for the winners, who remain in Baltimore for game two tomorrow night. Guard Peter Warren led the Bullets with 22 points but the only other Baltimore player in double figures was his backcourt mate Jason Christopherson.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
INDIANS WIN 6TH IN A ROW
The Cleveland Indians remain the only unbeaten team in major league baseball thanks to a 14-2 pounding of the Boston Red Sox at Fenway yesterday. Outfielder Taffy Wright had 3 hits and 3 rbi's to lead the Indians, who errupted for 10 runs in the top of the 8th inning.

In other American League action thirdbaseman Don Lang delivered a 2-out rbi single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Yankees a 4-3 win over visiting Chicago. Veteran Dixie Walker hit a two run homer for the winners while Danny Litwhiler drove in a pair of runs for the Sox to increase his league leading rbi total to 10. Marius Russo got the win in relief of Dizzy Dean, who pitched 8 strong innings for the New Yorkers.

The St Louis Browns beat Washington for the third straight time, this one by an 11-2 count. Sam Zoldak allowed just 6 hits in 8 innings for the win while Bob Dillinger, Bruce Campbell and Vern Stephens all homered for the Brownies.

In Philadelphia, Tommy Henrich homered and tripled to help Detroit down the Athletics 8-5. Henrich drove in 3 runs and scored 3 times. Tiger hurler Hal White improved to 2-0 with an acceptable 8 inning performance.

NATIONAL LEAGUE
The Pittsburgh Pirates had quite a weekend, sweeping the Boston Braves while outscoring them 38-10 in the three game series. Yesterday's final was 9-3 as Bill Elliott and Bill Salkeld homered for the winners, who also got 3 hits and 3 rbi's from second year outfielder Ralph Kiner. Jim Tobin went the distance for the Bucs to even his record at 1-1 while Ken Raffensberger took the loss.

Grady Hatton's 3-run homer in the bottom of the 8th inning gave the Cincinnati Reds a 3-1 win over Brooklyn. Pete Reiser drove in the Dodgers run in the 4th inning to prolong his hitting streak to a career high 17 games.

Three St Louis errors in the top of the ninth helped the New York Giants score 5 times in that inning en route to a 7-3 win over the Cardinals. Russ Bauers earned the win while Mort Cooper's record drops to 0-2 after the Cardinal collapse.

Outfielder Buster Adams hit a 2-run homer to help the Phillies past visiting Chicago 4-3. Max Macon bailed out winning pitcher Charley Schanz in the ninth inning for his third save of the season.

MUSIAL NAMED NL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
St Louis Cardinals first baseman Stan Musial was named the National League Player of the week. In 31 at bats Musial hit .419 with 2 homers and 8 rbi's. The three-time allstar wins player of the week honours for the second time in his 6 year career.

St Louis also claimed the American League player of the week honour as Browns pitcher Archie McKain got the nod on the strength of 17 shutout innings last week. He was 2-0 with 10 strikeouts in 2 starts.

LOOKS LIKE END OF LINE FOR HERMAN
Veteran second baseman Billy Herman has been released by the New York Giants just two weeks after the White Sox cut him loose. The Giants had given him a minor league tryout but released a statement saying that Herman did not fit into their future plans. The move likely spells the end of a 15 year career for Herman. He was on 2 World Series winners early in his career with the Chicago Cubs before being dealt to Brooklyn. He made his lone allstar appearance in his only full season with the Dodgers before being traded back to the Cubs. The Cubs released him in 1944 and he signed with the cross-town White Sox.

Injuries cost Herman greatly in his career. He was outstanding his first month in the majors before missing 2 months with a back injury. A broken ankle cost him most of the 1937 season and nagging back problems would dog Herman throughout his later years.

GIANTS SIGN WEILAND TO MINOR LEAGUE DEAL
41 year old Bob Weiland is not ready to hang up his spikes for good. Just days after being released by Detroit the 1938 American League Cy Young Award winner and 7 time allstar has agreed to a deal with the New York Giants. Weiland has been a 20 game winner on 5 occassions including a career high 26-11 in his Cy Young Award winning season. Pitching mainly in relief for the Tigers last season, Weiland was 6-2 but had a 5.82 era. He did manage to notch his 300th career victory before last season came to a close.

Meanwhile the Tigers inked 41 year old first baseman Don Hurst to a minor league deal. Hurst was let go by the Cubs over the winter after hitting just .237 in 86 games last year. The 7 time allstar had previously played for the Phillies and Giants. Hurst ranks 9th alltime with 306 career homers.

BOXING NEWS
PEP TO DEFEND WORLD FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE
There is just one boxing match of note this week but it should be a thriller as unbeaten featherweight champ Willie Pep takes on European title holder Ray Famechon in Boston. Pep, a Hartford native, is 17-0 since the post war tournament began including a 15 round unanimous decision over Famechon in the early weeks of the tournament. He won a decision over Sandy Saddler last September to earn the title. This will be his first defense of that belt. Steve Gromek went the distance on the mound for his first victory of the season.

Famechon is 25-11 and coming off a December knockout of Finland's Elis Ask to claim the European Featherweight title. The Frenchman has won his last 8 bouts including 5 by knockout.

BROWNS RESIGN RECEIVER CLARK
The Cleveland Browns have resigned unrestricted free agent Mike Clark. The 4th year pro agreed to a 5 year deal with the club. Clark, who started 2 games a year ago, will likely be the Browns third receiver behind veteran Zach Kruczek and rookie first round pick Jim Hawthorne. The former Stephen F. Austin star had a career high 30 catches for 510 yards a year ago.

In other signing news the Buffalo Bills resigned DE Willie Wistrom. The third year pro started 8 games for the Bills a year ago. Denver resigned inside linebacker Anthony Garrett, who started 8 games and had 24 tackles for the Broncos last season.

Here it is but it isn't pretty for the Colonels.

KENTUCKY COLONELS TEAM HISTORY
While the state of Kentucky has produced a pair of national champions on the college level (one each for UK and Western Kentucky) the pro game has not been as kind to Kentucky natives. The NBA Colonels have made the playoffs just 3 times in their 14 year history and have a career record of 483-627.

In 1935-36 the Colonels finished second in the Midwest Division with a 48-26 record but lost in the quarterfinals 4 games to 2 against Indianapolis. Two year later they won their first playoff series, overcoming a 3-1 deficeit to beat Milwaukee in 7 games. That series marked the coming out party for Kentucky's greatest player, guard Matt Graham. In his third season, Graham would take charge after the Colonels went down 3 games to one. He averaged 35 points a game in the final 3 contests, leading Kentucky to wins in each game. The Colonels would not advance any further that season as they lost in 6 games to eventual champion New Orleans.

In 1938-39 the Colonels would win their first and only Midwest Division title. They would beat Chicago in 5 games in the quarterfinals but again failed to advance past the semi's, falling in 4 straight to Indianapolis.

The following season they would barely miss the playoffs but it has been nothing but bad times for the franchise since then.

The most decorated Colonel is the previously mentioned Matt Graham. The only Kentucky player ever named to a postseason all-star team, Graham remains the team leader today at age 34. A first round pick out of Pittsburgh in 1934, Graham has spent his entire career with the Colonels and his 18,721 career points rank second to New Orleans' Ethan Milner in alltime scoring.

If Graham is the key to Kentucky's NBA history, then Trevor Presgraves is it's future. Taken second overall in 1944, the 24 year old appears to be on the verge of stardom. The former Notre Dame point guard averaged a career high 18.8 ppg while adding 6.4 assists per game this past season.

BULLETS SEND A MESSAGE IN GAME TWO BLOWOUT
After being embarrassed in front of their hometown fans in game one of the NBA finals, the Baltimore Bullets put on a show for the crowd in game two, hammering Dallas 130-78. The Chaparrals were never in the game as Baltimore built a quick 15-2 lead and never looked back.

Baltimore was a completely different team from game one, dominating the boards and making great decisions when to shoot. Peter Warren in particular was outstanding, scoring 31 points while adding 13 assists. Forward Joseph Mozell had 21 points while center Preye Pensyl, who's picture should have been on a milk carton in game one, responded with one of his best efforts of the season.

The big difference in game from a Dallas perspective was rookie John Layton committing 3 fouls in the first quarter and never getting untracked. Guard Cody Shaw also got into foul trouble and the Dallas bench could not keep up with a very motivated Baltimore offense that shot 55% from the field. The series shifts to Dallas for Games three thru five beginning Wednesday night.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PIRATES WIN ANOTHER BLOWOUT
There seems to be no stopping the Pittsburgh Pirates offense. In 9 games this season the Bucs have scored 66 runs, good for more than 7 per game. Yesterday the Brooklyn Dodgers pitching staff was victimized for 12 runs as the Pirates blasted the Dodgers 12-1 at Ebbetts Field. Arky Vaughan hit a pair of homers to give him 4 on the season, while Bill Elliott and catcher Tom Padden each had 3 hits. Meanwhile, Pirate ace Cliff Melton held the Dodgers in check allowing just 1 run on 5 hits for his third win of the season. Pete Reiser got the only extra base hit off Melton, an rbi double in the 4th that extended Reiser's hitting streak to 18 games. An impressive streak for the young outfielder but Reiser is still less than halfway to the National League record of 39 straight games with at least one hit set by Ginger Beaumont of Pittsburgh in 1903.

The two other games in the National League were much tighter contests. In New York, Ken Chase improved his record to 2-0 as the Giants trimmed the Cubs 3-2. Rookie catcher Yogi Berra had one of the Giants 3 hits. Berra is hitting .440 after 9 games.

In Cincinnati, Joe Dimaggio's 3 run homer gave the Reds a 5-4 win over Boston and earning rookie hurler Art Houtteman his first major league victory. Houtteman allowed 3 runs and 5 hits in 7 1/3 innings, a much better showing than his debut in Pittsburgh last week.

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP
A 6-run third inning highlighted by homers from Ralph Hodgin and Tom Hafey gave the Chicago White Sox a 9-6 victory over the New York Yankees. For the second time in three days, Yankee shortstop Frankie Crosetti hit 2 homers in a game against the Sox. Eddie Lopat got the win to improve to 2-0 with George Maltzberger notching his 3rd save of the season.

The Senators avoided a 4-game sweep in St Louis by winning the series finale 4-3 behind a solid pitching performance from Milo Candini. Candini scattered 8 hits while allowing just 2 earned runs in 8 innings of work.

In Philadelphia the Athletics salvaged a split of their 4 game set against Detroit by doubling the Tigers 8-4 yesterday. Shortstop Irv Hall and catcher Hal Wagner each drove in a pair of runs for the winners. Bill Voiselle went the distance, allowing 8 hits, to even his record at 1-1.

130-78, damn. That's just wrong. Especially in the finals. Ouch.

The Braves can't get anything going after that season-opening series. It didn't help running into the red-hot Pirates, and Cincy is no slouch. The Red Sox are even worse, giving up too many runs at home.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
VETERAN MARTIN GIVES CARDS WIN IN 13 INNING MARATHON
In the late 1930's Stu Martin played a key role on 3 World Series winning St Louis Cardinals teams. However, he has spent most of the past 6 seasons in the minors and was actually released twice including once by the Cardinals in 1945. After the A's cut him lose last season St Louis resigned Martin to a minor league contract. He had a strong enough spring that the Cards decided to bring the 33 year old north at the conclusion of spring training.
That move paid huge dividends yesterday as Martin delivered his first major league RBI in nearly a year in a clutch situation. Martin's double in the bottom of the 13th inning scored Hoot Evers with the winning run in a 5-4 St Louis victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Earlier the Cards had rallied from a 4-2 deficiet and tied the game on a 2-out rbi single from Frank McCormick in the bottom of the ninth inning. Enos Slaughter had scored the tying run and also had a pair of rbi's in the game for St Louis. Bobby Estalella led the Phillies with 2 hits and 3 rbi's.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had another strong offensive day, scoring 7 runs on 11 hits, but this time it was not enough as the Bucs fell 8-7 in Brooklyn. Pee Wee Reeese led the Dodgers with 3 hits while Pete Reiser added a homerun. Neither starting pitcher survived long as Pirates hurler Ken Heintzelman was chased in the second after allowing 5 runs. Rex Barney gave up 5 earned runs in 4 innings for Brooklyn.

In other National League action rookie Earl Torgeson had 4 hits including a homerun and drove in all 3 runs as the Boston Braves topped the Reds in Cincinnati 3-1. Braves starter Warren Spahn allowed just 5 hits in 8 innings work for his first win of the season.

In New York, Phil Rizzuto drove in a pair of runs to lead visiting Chicago past the Giants 5-4. Giants shortstop Mickey Haslin hit a 3 run homer but that was one of the few mistakes Cub starter and winning pitcher Johnny Welch made in his 8 innings of work. After 4 years as a starter Hank Wyse moved to the Chicago bullpen this season and pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his first career save. Giants outfielder Mel Ott had one hit in the game to increase is career total to 2847, just two shy of Lou Gehrig for 19th alltime.

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP
Is there no stopping the defending World Champions? Johnny Babich tossed a complete game 5-hitter as the Cleveland Indians beat Washington 7-1 to improve to 7-0 on the season. Third baseman Oscar Grimes paced the Indians attack with 2 hits and 3 rbi's while first baseman Mickey Rocco drove in a pair of runs. Babich improves his record to 2-0 with a 1.02 era.

Elsewhere the visiting Chicago White Sox scored once in each of the first three innings off of Detroit starter Virgil Trucks and that was enough to allow the Chisox to hang on for a 3-2 victory at Tiger Stadium. Dick Wakefield had 3 hits in a losing cause for the Tigers to improve his batting average to .458, second in the American League behind Tiger teammate Red Kress. Ferris Fain led the White Sox with a solo homer and an rbi double. Gene Schott is 2-0 after earning the win while White Sox closer George Maltzberger earned his 4th save of the young season.

The Red Sox woes continue as Boston fell to 1-6 with a 6-3 loss at Fenway against St Louis. Archie McKain became the first 3 game winner in the American League after pitching 8 innings and allowing 3 earned runs. McKain also helped his own cause with a pair of hits including a 2 run triple. Dom Dimaggio had 3 hits including his first homer of the season for the Red Sox.

In the other game the Yankees scored 6 runs in the final 3 innings at Philadelphia to rally past the Athletics 9-8. The Yankees hit 4 homeruns off of A's pitchers in the game including 3 against starter Les McCrabb. McCrabb was forced to leave the game in the 8th inning with back spasms.

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE AWARDS
RICHARD NAMED NHL MVP
On the strength of a league record 62 goal season, Maurice 'Rocket' Richard of the Montreal Canadiens has been named the National Hockey League's Most Valuable Player. For his 62 goal, 85 point effort this season Richard collects the first Hart Memorial Trophy of his career. He narrowly edged out Chicago scoring star Max Bentley and Toronto's Ted Kennedy for the award.

Bentley did not come away empty handed. In addition to winning his second straight NHL scoring title with 89 points, the Chicago center also was named the winner of the Lady Byng Trophy for gentelmanly play. Bentley had just 10 minutes in penalties this past season and wins the Byng for the second time in his career.

The Calder Memorial Trophy named after former league President Frank Calder was presented to Toronto winger Howie Meeker. The award is given annually to the top rookie. Meeker finished just ahead of teammate Vic Lynn with Detroit's Gordie Howe coming in third. Meeker topped all newcomers with 23 goals and played a key role in the Leafs march to the Stanley Cup Finals.

The Vezina Trophy may need to be renamed the Durnan Award. Montreal goaltender Bill Durnan won it for the fourth straight season as he once again led all goaltenders in goals-against-average. Durnan played all 60 games between the pipes for the Habs and had a 2.19 gaa with 7 shutouts. Chuck Rayner of the Rangers and Detroit's Harry Lumley tied for second with a gaa of 2.46.

The NHL has announced a new trophy for next season. The scoring leader will now receive a trophy named after longtime Boston Bruin manager/coach Art Ross.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION FINALS
GAME 3 TONIGHT IN DALLAS
The Dallas Chaparrals look to do the same thing the Baltimore Bullets did Monday night - follow up a terrible outing with a dominating performance. After Dallas easily took the opener in the best of seven final 97-77, the Bullets humiliated the Chaps in Monday's second game.

The key for Dallas will be having the starters stay out of foul trouble. Rookie center John Layton was a force in game one, leading all scorers with 25 points and hauling in 11 rebounds. In game two, Layton got into foul trouble early and played just 18 minutes. As a result the Bullets controlled the boards, outrebounding Dallas 52-28 and dominating every facet of the game.

Actually I was real surprised Dallas took the opener. Baltimore looks like a far superior team but Layton is a great equalizer. When he is out of the lineup Baltimore just dominates the boards. If Layton does not come up with another superb effort the Chaps won't win another game.

Braves have a ways to go to become much of a factor in the NL but Torgeson looks like the real deal and Spahn will only get better. As for the Red Sox, not sure why they are doing so badly although they did have a tough schedule to begin the season with Washington and Cleveland.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION FINALS
BULLETS TAKE 2 GAMES TO 1 SERIES LEAD
The Baltimore Bullets dominated the NBA regular season, posting a league best 56 wins and they showed why they were the league's best team in Dallas last night, dropping the Chaparrals 90-83 to take a 2 games to one league in the NBA finals. Peter Warren once again led the Bullets offense with 18 points and 9 assists. Frank Soto, Joseph Mozell and Preye Pensyl each had 14 points with Pensyl grabbing 11 rebounds. John Layton led the Dallas offense with 18 points and 7 rebounds, and while it was a far better effort than his game 2 performance, the rookie did not come anywhere close to duplicating the dominance he showed in the series opener. Poor shooting again hurt the Chaparrals, in particular a dismal effort from guard Freddie *Scolari. However, much of the credit for Dallas' terrible shot selection must go to the Baltimore defense.

Game 4 is tomorrow night in Dallas.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
PITCHING AND A PINCH-HIT HOMER HIGHLIGHT NL GAMES
A pair of outstanding pitching efforts and a game winning pinch hit homerun from an unlikely source highlight an entertaining day of National League baseball.

In St Louis pinch-hitter Stu Martin was the hero for the second day in a row. After a 13th inning double to win Tuesday's game for the Redbirds, Martin delivered a sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the ninth to plate Frankie Baumholtz and give St Louis a 2-1 victory over Philadelphia. Cardinals starter Al Jurisch pitched the best game of his young career, tossing a complete game 3-hitter to improve his record to 2-1.

Pitching was also the name of the game in New York where Cubs starter Vern Olsen tossed a complete game 3-hitter in a 5-1 Chicago victory. Harlond Clift and Joe Marty each homered to account for the Chicago offense.

In Cincinnati, Reds starting pitcher Arnold Carter did it all. Carter tossed a complete game 7 hitter and hit a 3-run homer to account for all of the Cincinnati offense in a 3-1 Reds win over Boston.

The Brooklyn Dodgers knocked off Pittsburgh for the second straight game thanks to an unlikely pinch-hit homer. 39 year old Ollie Bejma gave the Dodgers the win with a 3-run homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was Bejma's first roundtripper since May of last year and gave Pirates reliever Dutch Dietz his second loss of the season.

AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP
Pitching was also the name of the game in Cleveland. Bill Lohrman improved his record to 3-0 and his league leading era to 0.35 with a 4-hit shutout of the Washington Senators. Cleveland won the game 3-0 thanks mainly to a 2-run homer from Clyde Kluttz off Washington starter Jimmy Haynes. Haynes allowed just 6 Tribe hits in the game. The Indians improve to 8-0 and are the only unbeaten team in the major leagues.

Chet Laabs hit a first inning homerun and Fred Caliguiri pitched 8 innings of 6 hit ball as Philadelphia topped the New York Yankees 3-1. Clem Dreisewerd pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save of the season. Tiny Bonham allowed just 9 hits but his record falls to 1-2 with the loss.

In Detroit, Frank Demaree and Tom Hafey each had two rbi's to help Chicago past the Tigers for the second straight game, this time by a 7-2 count.

The Boston Red Sox halted their 5 game losing streak with an explosive offensive display at Fenway, dropping St Louis 10-3. Outfielder Stan Spence and catcher Roy Partee each drove in 3 runs for Boston while Ted Williams and Babe Young each scored a pair and had two hits apiece. Andy Karl pitched 6 innings to even his record at 1-1 and he was aided by a solid effort from relievers Blix Donnelly and Woody Rich.

BOXING NEWS
PEP EASILY DEFENDS FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE
Willie Pep had little trouble disposing of European Champion Ray Famechon in their World Featherweight title bout in Boston. Pep dominated the fight from the opening bell until the close of round 15. None of the three judges gave the Frenchman more than 2 rounds in the bout while Pep was the clear winner in at least 12 of the rounds including the 15th when he floored Famechon with just over a minute remaining. The European champ struggled to his feet and then avoided Pep for the final 60 seconds to avoid a knock out loss.

The win improves the unbeaten Pep's record to 18-0. Famechon retains his European title but his record drops to 25-12.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
SENS HAND TRIBE THEIR FIRST LOSS
It took 12 innings and a Wahington comeback but the Cleveland Indians have finally suffered their first loss of the season after 8 straight victories. Washington overcame a 4-2 deficiet with 2 runs in the top of the 9th and then won the game 6-5 on an rbi single from Buddy Lewis in the top of the 12th inning. The Senators had earlier scored a run in the top of the 10th only to see Cleveland rally to tie in the home half of the inning. Lewis paced the Senators with 3 hits while catcher Al Evans had a pair of sac fly rbi's including one that plated the tying run in the 9th.

A 9th inning rally was also the deciding factor in Boston where the St Louis Browns dumped the Red Sox 8-6 thanks to a 3-run ninth. Cookie Lavagetto's 2-run double, his 3rd two-bagger of the game, with 2 out in the ninth proved the difference. The Red Sox outhit the Browns 15-9 but lose for the 7th time in nine games.

In Chicago, Dizzy Dean pitched 8 innings of 6 hit ball to lead the Yankees to a 5-3 win over the White Sox. New York scored four runs in the top of the first including a bases loaded double from Jack Boiling that scored 3. Tom Hafey's 4th homer of the season, a 2-run shot, accounted for most of the White Sox offense.

In Detroit, Tommy Henrich doubled, tripled and drove in 3 runs to lead the hometown Tigers past Philadelphia 8-4. Hal White allowed just 1 earned run in 7 innings to run his record to 3-0. Ray Scarborough suffered his third straight loss for the Athletics.

NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP
HUTCHINGS' STELLAR EFFORT MOVES REDS TO WITHIN HALF GAME OF LEAD
Reds hurler Johnny Hutchings and the Dodgers Don Black hooked up in a classic pitchers duel in Brooklyn as each threw 8 shutout innings. The Reds would scrape out the game's only run in the top of the ninth. With one out and one on pinch hitter Ford Garrison set Black to the showers with a bloop single. Dodgers reliever Jack Krauss took over and promptly surrendered an infield hit to Grady Hatton that loaded the bases. With still just one out the Dodgers ideally needed Chuck Sheerin to ground into a double play to end the threat. Sheerin nearly obliged as Brooklyn second baseman Jackie Robinson made a diving stab to grab a hard hit two hopper. With no chance to go home, Robinson flipped the ball to shortstop Pee Wee Reese for the second out but Reese's relay to first was a shade to slow to retire Sheerin and Benny Zientara crossed the plate with the games only run.

Relievers Ewell Blackwell and Howie Fox teamed up to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth and give Hutchings his second win of the season and 12th in a row going back to last season. It was another hard luck day for Dodger starter Don Black, who falls to 0-3 despite a stingy 2.13 era. In 3 starts the Dodgers have scored a total of 1 run for Black.

The win improves the Reds record to 6-4 and leaves them just a half game behind idle Pittsburgh atop the National League.

In the only other game in the senior circuit, Buster Adams hit a 3-run homer to pace Philadelphia past the Cardinals 6-1 and allow the Phillies to salvage one game out of their 3 game trip to St Louis. Charley Schanz pitched a complete game 5-hitter to improve his record to 3-0.

GOLF: GREATER NEW ORLEANS INVITATIONAL
REVOLTA HAS EARLY LEAD BUT HOGAN HOT ON HIS TAIL
Veteran Johnny Revolta shot an 8 under 64 to take the opening day lead at the Greater New Orleans Invitational. Revolta has a 1 stroke lead on Masters Champ Ben Hogan. It is a rare position for Revolta to be leading a tournament, at least in recent memory. He was at the top of his game in the mid-thirties, winning a US Open and the leading money winner in 1935 but has done little the past decade.

On a whole, scores were exceptionally low as easy pin placements and a calm day allowed 49 of the 63 golfers entered in the tournament to break par. Defending champion Byron Nelson is 3 strokes off the pace after shooting a 67 yesterday.

KENTUCKY DERBY JUST A WEEK AWAY
Unlike last year when the "Clubfooted Comet" Assault dominated all three events en route to the Triple Crown, there is no clear cut favourite this time around. The best bets to win the first leg next Saturday at Churchill Downs include Faultless and Phalanx. Faultless is from Calumet Farm, which can already boast the 1941 and 1944 Derby winners. Phalanx will be ridden by Eddie Arcaro, a jockey with 3 Derby wins to his credit including 1945 aboard Hoop Jr.

Two others to keep an eye on are On Trust, ridden by 1943 Derby winner John Longden and Jet Pilot with rookie jockey Eric Guerin. Despite the young jockey, Jet Pilot will still have plenty of experience in his camp in the form of trainer Silent Tom Smith. Smith is best known for training Seabiscut which won a classic showdown with War Admiral in 1938.

Looking ahead, there already is an early favourite for next year's Derby. Citation, a 2 year old from Calumet Farm is getting rave reviews and many feel he will be the horse to beat in 1948.

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE OFFSEASON
JETS SIGN VETERAN QB SHIRK
The New York Jets have invited veteran QB Juqua Shirk to training camp with thought that he is the favourite to win the backup job behind starter Keith Reeves. Shirk, who had been with the Steelers since the league began in 1941, did not play at all last season after starting all 16 games the previous year. He will compete with Penn State rookie Chris Caravello and second year man Amp Short for the back-up role. The Jets also signed former Jacksonville linebacker Priest Metcalf to a 1 year deal. Bothered by injuries, Metcalf made just three tackles for the Jags a year ago.

In other signing news:

With starter Issac Burke gone to free agency, the Indianpolis Colts signed a pair of quarterbacks this week. Former Giants starter Eric Poppinga is the front runner to claim the starting role in Indy after agreeing to a 3 year deal with the Colts. Poppinga started 13 games last season after spending three years as a backup in San Francisco. He threw 22 touchdown passes but was picked off 17 times with the Giants. Also resigning with Indy was Anthony Warlick who started 3 games last season while Burke was injured. Third round pick Pete Sewell from Stanford may also be in the mix for the starting assignment.

The Giants quarterback picture got even more crowded with the announcement that Lincoln Hill has been invited to camp. Hill, who started just 3 games in 4 seasons with Miami, signed a 4 year deal and has been promised an opportunity to win the starting job vacated with the loss of Poppinga. However, second round pick Harry *Gilmer from Alabama along with veterans Joey Martin and Bill Sweeney will also be after the job.

The Chicago Bears signed former Indianapolis reserve cornerback Richie Kimber to a 4 year deal. The Bears secondary lost 2 key defensive backs to free agency so Kimber will likely getting a starting job with the defending champs despite only having 1 start in his 5 year career. The secondary could be a huge weakness for the Bears this season.

The Philadelphia Eagles were quite unhappy with their punting a year ago so they have signed a couple of veteran free agents to challenge 2nd year man Bill Brown for the job. Brown averaged just 39.5 yards a punt last year which ranked near the bottom of the league. Robert Sestak, who last played with the Rams in 1943, and Allen Wells, who has been out of the NFL since punting for Minnesota in 1942, where each signed to a tryout. The Eagles also announced they have resigned backup wide receiver Scott Pearson to a 2 year deal. The 6th year pro from Oklahoma had 28 catches for the Eagles a year ago.

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION
STRONG FOURTH QUARTER ALLOWS CHAPS TO EVEN SERIES AT TWO
A strong finish allowed the Dallas Chaparrals to overcome a very slow start and beat the visiting Baltimore Bullets 101-94 to even their best of seven NBA final at 2 games apiece. The Bullets carried the play early and led 27-18 at the end of the opening quarter. Dallas got to within one at the halftime break but it was the fourth quarter when the Chaps really chose to shine. Rookie center John Layton got 10 of his team high 18 points in the final 12 minutes as Dallas outscored Baltimore 28-19 in the final 12 minutes.

In addition to Layton, who once again was the key to the Chaps offense, Dallas got a strong effort from guards Cody Shaw and Freddie *Scolari. On the other side Baltimore's best player, Peter Warren, was a non-factor and went long stretches without contributing anything. It almost seemed as if the Bullets spent a little too much time reading the press clippings from games two and three and felt they could just mail in it this time.

Baltimore is cleary the better team on paper, but the Bullets are just like any other team in this league. If they don't put in a solid 48 minutes work they can and will be beaten. The momentum has cleary shifted back to Dallas after all but their staunchest supporters were counting the Chaps out of the series prior to game 4. It will be very interesting to see how both teams react tomorrow in Game 5.

ALL TIME SCORING LEADER DEMANDS TRADE
The hot rumour circulating during the playoffs centers around veteran Ethan Milner telling the New Orleans Jazz he wants out. Milner, who leads the NBA in virtually every career stat including points with 23,913, reportedly is sick of a lack of effort from his teammates and wants to be traded. The 13 year vet has apparently had a falling out with Cameron Belli. The two, of course, have plenty of history going all the way back to the 1933 draft when the Jazz selected Belli first overall ahead of Milner, who went second to Dallas. The two co-existed in New Orleans the past four seasons, and it was a peaceful co-existance when they were winning, but late in a dismal 25-49 season tempers were flaring between the two.

The Jazz refuse to comment on the rumours except to say that both Milner and Belli are key components to their organization. Only Boston and New York had a worse record than the Jazz this season. It was a trying year for the franchise that won 3 of the previous 4 league championships.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
OVERMIRE AND TIGERS SHUTOUT A'S 1-0
Stubby Overmire dominated Philadelphia hitters by tossing a 5-hit shutout as the Detroit Tigers blanked the Athletics 1-0. Only one Philadelphia player made it as far as second base as Overmire scattered 5 singles and a walk in twirling the 11th shutout of his career. His counterpart, Bill Voiselle of the Athletics, was equally impressive in allowing just 4 hits but the big blow was a Joe Gantenbein homerun to lead off the seventh inning. The victory moves the Tigers to .500 and assures them of at least a split of their 4 game series at home against the A's.

Boston handed Cleveland it's second straight extra inning loss. A day after the previously unbeaten Tribe lost in 12 innings to Washington, the Red Sox got a 10th inning homerun from Fred Chapman to trim Cleveland 4-3. Chapman was an unlikely source to deliver the winning run. A career minor leaguer, he entered the game in the 8th inning and in his first at bat of the contest delivered his first major league homerun in nearly 5 years. He has 54 career games to his credit and hit his only other homer on June 10, 1942 while with the Athletics.

In Washington, Wally Judnich doubled, homered and drove in 3 runs to lead St Louis past the Senators 8-4. Milt Byrnes had 3 hits and 2 rbi's for the Browns, who move to within a game and a half of first place Cleveland.

Frank Crosetti hit his major league leading 5th homerun of the season to pace New York past the White Sox in Chicago. Jumbo Brown pitched 7 and two-third's innings to notch his first win while Doyle Lade got save number 3 for the Yankees.

NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP
BIG BATS RED-HOT FOR CINCINNATI
Johnny Mize and Joe Dimaggio were both off to a relatively slow start this season for the Cincinnati Reds. Mize was hitting just .205 entering today's game and while he did have a pair of homers JoeD was batting just .251 for the season. Both broke out today as the Reds pounded the hometown Brooklyn Dodgers 15-3. Mize had 4 hits and drove in 5 runs while Dimaggio homered and had 4 rbi's in the victory. Catcher Frankie Hayes got in on the act as well, belting a pair of homers and driving in 5 runs. It was another awful outing for Dodger starter Mickey Haefner, who has been shelled in all 3 of his starts and now owns an 11.15 era on the season. Rookie Art Houtteman pitched 6 strong innings for the win and improved his record to 2-1.

In New York, Hoot Evers delivered a 10th inning rbi single to score Stan Musial and give the St Louis Cardinals a 4-3 win over the Giants. The Giants had tied the game in the 8th on a 2-run double from outfielder Hank Leiber.

Arky Vaughan and Jim Russell each had two hits as Pittsburgh trimmed Boston 3-2, ruining a 5-hitter from Braves starter Ken Raffensberger. Jim Tobin and Alex Carrasquel combined on a 9 hitter for the win. Boston rookie Earl Torgeson hit his 4th homer of the season in the game.

Phil Rizzuto had 3 rbi's including a 2-run single in the bottom of the 8th that provided the deciding runs in a 7-6 Cubs win over Philadelphia. Harlond Clift's 4th homer of the season aided the Cubs cause while Bobby Estalella and Del Ennis went deep for the Phillies.

GOLF: GREATER NEW ORLEANS INVITATIONAL
BOROS TAKES LEAD AS SCORES RISE ON DAY TWO
After a near record breaking Thursday high winds and difficult pin placements played havoc with round two scores at the PGA stop in New Orleans. Juluis Boros, a former accountant from Fairfield, Connecticut who just recently left his job to join the tour fulltime, had the best round of the day and as a results holds the lead at 8 under par midway through the tournament. Dutch Harrison and Charlie Ward sit one shot off the pace while opening day leader Johnny Revolta is in a group of 5 golfers 2 strokes back. Defending champ Byron Nelson shot a 75 yesterday but it was good enough to just barely make the cut at -2.

Expect difficult conditions the rest of the weekend as the executives at the City Park Golf Club where a little embarrassed to see such low numbers on Thursday. "It was a totally different course (Friday) as compared to (Thursday" said Lloyd Mangrum after shooting a 75. "They sure didn't like seeing all those red numbers but the conditions today, when you combined the pin placement and the wind, were outrageous."
