Pittsburgh lost their first game of the season and then went on a 9-game winning streak. They went just 4-7 through the rest of April, but they still have a half-game lead over the Cardinals. The Braves, Robins and Phillies are each just 1 game out. Meanwhile, the hapless Giants got off to the worst start of any team in league history at 4-17.

In the AL, Cleveland seems determined to prove they can win even after former first baseman Patrick Seifried departed for the Federal League. Shortstop Clyde Kreisle picked up the slack, hitting .443 with an amazing 27 RBI. He was named the AL Batter of the Month for April. Two other Broncos, catcher Whiskey Allen and third baseman "Frenchie" Fournier are hitting .400 or better. Seifried's replacement, Glendon Catalano, a former backup, did well in his first everyday job. He hit .318 with 18 RBI.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Clyde Kreisle, SS, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .443 with 27 RBI, 23 runs scored and 2 home runs.

NL - Scott Podlasek, RF, Pittsburgh Pirates - He hit .395 with 16 RBI, 12 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Dorsey MacIntyre, Boston Red Sox - He was 5-1 with a 1.86 ERA and 1 shutout.

NL - "Crispy" Rastell, Boston Braves - He was 3-0 with a 1.11 ERA and 1 shutout. Unfortunately for the Braves, Rastell tore a muscle in his throwing arm and should miss the entire month of May.

American League Standings

Boston (A) 10 11 .476 5.5
Philadelphia (A) 10 11 .476 5.5
Detroit 9 12 .429 6.5
New York (A) 6 15 .286 9.5

National League Standings

Pittsburgh 13 8 .619 -
St. Louis (N) 13 9 .591 .5
Boston (N) 12 9 .571 1.0
Brooklyn 12 9 .571 1.0

Cincinnati 10 11 .476 3.0
Chicago (N) 9 13 .409 4.5
New York (N) 4 17 .190 9.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .400 with 14 RBI and 16 runs scored. Whiskey stole his 500th base this month, becoming only the 2nd player to do so.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .247 with 13 RBI, 5 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy was 3-2 with a 4.70 ERA including a shutout in 5 starts. He was named the AL POTW on April 20th.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .247 with 11 RBI and 6 runs scored.

Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .357 with 9 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert was 3-0 with a 2.18 ERA through 5 starts.

John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops got off to his best start, hitting .361 with 13 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .362 with 14 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Genaro Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .416 with 7 RBI and 19 runs scored. He was 9-4 in stolen base attempts. He was also named the AL POTW on April 13th.

Ned Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned made the Browns' major league team as their #4 starter this season. He was 1-3 with a 3.62 ERA throught 5 starts.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Miller hit .133 (2 for 15) with 1 RBI and 4 runs scored. He is still a backup outfielder.

Thomas Strasser, LF, Cleveland Broncos - Thomas again began the season in AAA.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis Cardinals - As expected, Pudge began the season in AAA.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia Athletics - I believe Nagel is the first ancestor to be drafted by the A's. He was promoted to the majors on April 14th due to another player's injury, but he has not yet pitched in a major league game.

Cleveland continued to dominate the AL, going 19-9 in May and pulling out to a 7-game lead over the Browns. St. Louis went 18-10 to move into 2nd, while Washington went just 12-15.

Pittsburgh went 14-14 to fall back to the pack, while Cincinnati went 18-9 to storm into first. Boston went 10-19 to fall 7 games back, but the Giants drew closer to mild respectability by going just 12-15.

Batters of the Month:

AL - "Barefoot" Atkins, CF, New York Yankees - He hit .396 with 17 RBI and 15 runs scored.

NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit an unbelieveable .526 with 16 RBI and 16 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 7-0 with a 1.25 ERA and 2 shutouts.

NL - Cecil Tan, Cincinnati Reds- He was 5-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 1 shutout.

Chicago (N) 27 23 .540 2.0
Philadelphia (N) 22 27 .449 6.5

New York (N) 16 32 .333 12.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .361 with 5 RBI and 22 runs scored. He was also 7-0 in steal attempts. He is now the career leader in hits and runs scored.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .374 with 18 RBI and 16 runs scored. He was instrumental in the Reds' rise to first.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy was 2-5 with a 3.39 ERA in 7 starts.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .361 with 23 RBI, 13 runs scored and 2 runs scored.

Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .385 with 17 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert was 3-3 with a 4.09 ERA including 1 shutout through 7 starts.

John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .289 with 8 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .315 with 12 RBI and 17 runs scored.

Genaro Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .370 with 11 RBI, 23 runs scored and 16 steals!

Ned Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned was 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA throught 3 starts. He was sent to the bullpen after the great Raymond Gindler returned to the rotation. He had not pitched since tearing a muscle in his arm last September.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Miller hit .355 (11 for 31) with 1 RBI and 4 runs scored.

Thomas Strasser, LF, Cleveland Broncos - Thomas was promoted to the majors on May 21st when centerfielder Steve Dinzler suffered a leg injury. The injury was minor, and Dinzler is expected back any day. While in Cleveland, Thomas struggled to hit just .095 (2 for 21), but did collect 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis Cardinals - Pudge was promoted to the majors on May 8th. He is currently serving as a 3rd catcher and 3rd first baseman, but he is the defensive replacement behind the plate when needed. Pudge has appeared in just one game so far, going 1 for 4. The first hit of his career came on the 16th against the Cubs.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia Athletics - Nagle pitched in two games this month, one start and one in relief. He went 0-1 despite having a 0.00 ERA. That is deceiving because he allowed 7 unearned runs over 5 1/3 innings in a May 22nd start against the Yankees.

July 1, 1914

Cleveland went 16-10 in June, but the Browns went just 14-13, falling to third. The White Sox went 18-8 to move into 2nd Place, but Cleveland still has a 7 game lead overall. The Broncos lost their ace Allan Gilbrech on June 9th, and he may not return until the end of July.

Cincinnati went 13-15 in June, while the Cardinals went 18-8. St. Louis now has a 4.5 game lead. Amazingly, Pittsburgh's "Ray of Light" Brown already has 11 home runs on the season. The major league record is 16 set just last season.

St. Louis Browns' ace Raymond Gindler had a chance to become the first pitcher in history to 300 wins. He was on pace to pass that milestone next season, but he hurt himself at the end of the year last season and did not return until May 15th of this year. He won his first 4 starts and went 5-2 overall until pulling a muscle in his arm on June 10th. He will not pitch again until the second week of July. He currently has 270 wins and at age 39 it will be tough for him to get that 300th victory.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Jed Burke, 2B, Chicago White Sox - He hit .495 with 14 RBI and 20 runs scored.

NL - Tarren "The Turtle" Peldmulder, RF, Cincinnati Reds - He hit .438 with 17 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 5-1 with a 1.50 ERA and 1 shutout.

NL - Tim "Presto" Lopresto, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 6-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 1 shutout.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .290 with 8 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .349 with 14 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert was 3-2 with a 2.40 ERA through 7 starts. Unfortunately for Fists and the Cards, he strained his elbow on June 30th and could be out until the end of August.

John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .309 with 15 RBI, 17 runs scored and 3 home runs.

Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .386 with 12 RBI and 9 runs scored.

Cleveland went just 12-12 this month, but they managed to maintain a 5.5 game lead in the AL. The only difference is that New York is now in second place after going 21-4 in July!!

St. Louis went 15-11 to maintain a 4 game lead over Cincinnati. The Reds acquired third baseman Bop Vacha from the Red Sox in return for starting pitcher Mitchel Luque. Vacha is just 24, but he already has 788 career hits and a .294 lifetime average since debuting in 1908.

There were several other big trades, but the Braves were by far the busiest team, completing five trades this month. They got rightfielder Carson Zabienko, who hit 10 home runs in 1911, from the cross-town Red Sox for pitcher Will Haggan. They even traded Harry Cohan, perhaps the best catcher in baseball (who is currently hitting .400), to the Cubs for pitcher Ernest Spinti.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Tee Carver, RF, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .447 with 17 RBI and 15 runs scored.

NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .473 with 18 RBI, 25 runs scored and 4 home runs!

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 5-2 with a 1.20 ERA and 4 shutouts!

NL - Cecil Tan, Cincinnati Reds - He was 5-0 with a 0.84 ERA and 5 shutouts in just 6 starts!

American League Standings

Cleveland 63 37 .630 -
New York (A) 58 43 .574 5.5
Chicago (A) 56 44 .560 7.0
St. Louis (A) 54 49 .524 10.5
Washington 47 55 .461 17.0
Philadelphia (A) 44 57 .436 19.5
Boston (A) 43 58 .426 20.5
Detroit 39 61 .390 24.0

National League Standings

St. Louis (N) 60 41 .594 -
Cincinnati 55 44 .556 4.0
Philadelphia (N) 53 48 .525 7.0
Chicago (N) 52 49 .515 8.0
Pittsburgh 50 52 .490 10.5
Brooklyn 49 51 .490 10.5
Boston (N) 45 57 .441 15.5
New York (N) 39 61 .390 20.5

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .352 with 6 RBI and 18 runs scored. He has been successful in his last 17 stolen base attempts dating back to April.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .264 with 13 RBI and 8 runs scored.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy was 1-5 with a 6.15 ERA in 6 starts.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .400 with 16 RBI and 11 runs scored.

Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry was traded to the Cubs on July 30th for starting pitcher Ernest Spinti. He hit .495 with 16 RBI and 18 runs scored in July. He also had a 20-game hitting streak snapped the same day he was traded. He is second in the NL with a .400 average, but amazingly the Cardinals' Woody Woodson leads the league at .440!

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert should be back around the final week of August.

John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .322 with 13 RBI, 13 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .283 with 10 RBI and 18 runs scored.

Genaro Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .347 with 10 RBI and 17 runs scored. He was named the AL POTW on July 27th. He is 2nd in the AL with a .374 average. He also leads the league with a .975 OPS and 45 steals.

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned was 2-2 with a 3.55 ERA in 6 starts. He has become the team's #1 starter, mainly because of the toll injuries have taken on 39-year-old former ace Raymond Gindler.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Miller hit .286 (10 for 35) with 1 RBI and 6 runs scored. He suffered a concussion on July 28th and should be out until August 12th.

Thomas Strasser, LF, Cleveland Broncos - Thomas finally had a strong month, hitting .300 (9 for 30) with 6 RBI and 5 runs scored.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis Cardinals - Pudge hit .167 (1 for 6) in 3 games, all at first base.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia Athletics - Nagle went 1-2 with a 4.08 ERA over 5 starts. He has worked his way into the regular rotation as the #4 starter.

WEB PAGES ARE UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES

September 1, 1914

Cleveland continued to struggle at the beginning of August, but they heated up mid-month and finished with a 7-game winning streak which was snapped on the last day of the month. All told, they went 17-13. New York, who looked so dangerous at the end of July, went just 13-16 and fell 9 games back. The White Sox went 17-12 but gained just a half-game on the Broncos.

Cincinnati came on strong, going 21-10 in August. They are now tied for the NL lead with the Cardinals, who went 16-13 on the month. The Phillies, who have fallen 10 games back, lost two of their starting pitchers this month. Mark Krosser is out for the season with a torn muscle in his arm, and "Greasy" Holloway will be out until late September with shoulder pain.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Jed Burke, 2B, Chicago White Sox - He hit .406 with 22 RBI and 20 runs scored.

NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .462 with 20 RBI, 22 runs scored and 3 home runs! He now leads the NL with an incredible .445 average with just one month to go!

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Dex Wolfe, Chicago White Sox - He was 6-1 with a 1.50 ERA.

NL - Michael McAinsh, New York Giants - He was 7-0 with a 2.11 ERA and 2 shutouts. Not bad for having just come to the Giants on July 27th via a trade with Detroit.

(thanks so much to holyroller for telling me how to fix the standings!!)

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy was 1-1 with a 4.32 ERA in 2 starts. He has been moved to the bullpen and will also serve as the team's emergency starter.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .326 with 14 RBI and 11 runs scored. However, he tore a thigh muscle on August 29th while running the bases, and he will miss the rest of the season.

Harry Cohan, C, Chicago (N) - Harry hit .371 with 7 RBI and 11 runs scored. He is hitting .394 on the season, but that's amazingly only good enough for 2nd place.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert returned to the mound on August 21st, throwing a 1-run complete game victory against the Cubs. On the month, he was 1-1 with a 1.53 ERA over 2 starts.

John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .263 with 4 RBI and 15 runs scored.

Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .347 with 11 RBI and 24 runs scored.

Genaro Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .354 with 4 RBI and 15 runs scored. He is still second in the AL with a .370 average. He leads the league with 56 steals and is just 10 steals away from tying the AL record (11 for the major league record).

"Nasty Ned" Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Ned was 0-5 with a 4.35 ERA in 7 starts.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Miller returned to the roster on August 12th, and the rest seemed to do him well. He hit .419 (13 for 31) with 6 RBI and 8 runs scored, by far his best month this season. He was also inserted into the starting lineup versus lefties.

Thomas Strasser, LF, Cleveland Broncos - Thomas hit .304 (7 for 23) with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. He has also stolen 14 bases in just 15 attempts this season.

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis Cardinals - Pudge hit .176 (3 for 17) with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia Athletics - Nagle went 1-5 with a 5.05 ERA over 7 starts.

ALL WEB PAGES ARE UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES AND WORLD SERIES BOX SCORES

September 28, 1914

Cleveland clinched the AL with two weeks left in the season. While their power production slipped somewhat with the loss of Patrick Seifried to the Federal League, the team pulled together this season and performed masterfully. They returned to the things that helped them win two previous pennants: speed and situational hitting. They had a great .272 team batting average, and they stole the most bases and scored the most runs in all of baseball.

In the NL, it came down to Cincinnati and St. Louis. The Cardinals took a one-game lead in the league into their series with the Reds that began on September 15th. They defeated Cincinnati in two of the three games. The Reds were within three games of the Cardinals when the two faced each other in the final series of the season. The Reds had to win all three games to finish in a tie for the pennant. They won Game 1, but the Cardinals, behind the arm of Fists Ubert defeated the Reds in Game 2 and clinched their first NL pennant since 1906.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Tee Carver, RF, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .411 with 23 RBI, 14 runs scored and 2 home runs.

NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .442 with 11 RBI and 26 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 4-3 with a 0.96 ERA and 2 shutouts.

NL - Tim "Presto" Lopresto, St. Louis Cardinals - He was 6-0 with a 1.17 ERA and 2 shutouts.

World Series

Cleveland has much more playoff experience, but one could argue that the experience they have has not been too beneficial. Twice this franchise finished with the best record in all of baseball (1907 and 1910) and both times they were beaten badly by an underestimated National League club. This time, the Broncos swear not to let it happen. They again have one of the top offenses in the league, based primarily on speed. They also have the second best team ERA in the league. St. Louis boasts perhaps the best player ever to put on a uniform in Woody Woodson. He won his 9th consecutive NL batting title this season and set a record of .444. He also hits for power and was third in the NL with 10 home runs. It will be intriguing to see him playing against Cleveland's Whiskey Allen, who has won 4 batting titles of his own. The Cardinals have the best team ERA in baseball, but their biggest weakness is a penchant for allowing walks, which could be devastating against a Cleveland team that can run the bases with the best of them.

My Prediction: This World Series looks like it may be one of the best matchups ever. Often times, there is a clear favorite, but not this year. Cleveland scored the most runs in baseball and St. Louis the 2nd most. St. Louis' pitchers allowed the fewest runs in baseball and Cleveland allowed the 2nd fewest. In a series this tight, any little thing could tip the balance, such as the fact that the Cardinals have home field advantage. The one thing that will make a difference, in my opinion, is the fact that St. Louis pitchers were 14th in baseball (out of 16 teams) in allowing walks. Giving the Broncos any free passes could come back to haunt the Cards. The pressure will then be in the capable hands of catcher Jim Gray who has a strong arm and threw out 35% of opposing runners. This could go either way, but I predict Cleveland will win it in 7 games.

Cleveland 3 - St. Louis 4: This was an exciting game and it came down to the final out. The Broncos scored a run in the 9th, and with two runners on base with just one out, leftfielder Stephen Elmendorf struck out and second baseman Randall Scully grounded out to the pitcher.

Cleveland 5 - St. Louis 3: Another exciting game! The score was tied at 2-2 going into the 8th, but the Broncos scored 3 runs off Tim "Presto" Lopresto, who incidentally won 33 games this season. Lopresto helped the Broncos' cause by throwing two wild pitches in the inning. Lopresto got an RBI single in the bottom of that inning, but he was thrown out at home after the next batter got a single of his own. The Cardinals stranded a runner at 2nd in the 8th and a runner at 3rd in the 9th.

St. Louis 2 - Cleveland 1: Another classic! This game was 2-0 in St. Louis' favor going into the bottom of the 9th. Third baseman "Frenchie" Fournier got a leadoff single, and then Cardinals pitcher Fists Ubert walked catcher Whiskey Allen. Centerfielder Steve Dinzler then hit a single, which scored Fournier. Allen and Dinzler advanced to 2nd and 3rd after the throw to the plate. Shortstop Clyde Kreisle lined out to third base, and Ubert intentionally walked rightfielder Tee Carver to load the bases, creating a force out at any base. The strategy worked perfectly as first baseman Glendon Catalano grounded into a 5-4-3 game-ending double play.

St. Louis 5 - Cleveland 3: The Cardinals took a 5-0 lead off Cleveland's ace Clifton Bradin after just 6 innings. The Broncos scored a run in the bottom of the 6th and two more in the 7th. With the ledoff runner on first and no outs in the bottom of the 9th, second baseman Randall Scully grounded into a double play and Cleveland could not get anything else going, putting them down 3-1 in the series.

St. Louis 4 - Cleveland 3: Down one run in the bottom of the 9th, Cleveland third baseman "Frenchie" Fournier reached base with two outs on a throwing error by St. Louis pitcher Tim Lopresto. The next batter, first baseman Glendon Catalano, could not take advantage of the blunder as he grounded out to third base to end the game and the Series. While Cleveland had an amazing season without former first baseman Patrick Seifried, one cannot help but wonder what could have been different in the World Series had he been there, because his replacement, Catalano, made two game-ending outs - one here in Game 5 and a game-ending double play in Game 3.

Who else would you expect the World Series MVP to be other than St. Louis' Woody Woodson. Woody did not disappoint, hitting .591 with 6 RBI and 2 runs scored. Of his 13 hits, two were doubles and two were triples, giving him an amazing 1.472 OPS.
