TWIWBL 32.4: Series XXV Notes - Marvin Miller Division

#Birmingham Black Barons

Bob Nieman and Pie Traynor combined to go 6-for-9, driving in 5 runs and scoring the same as the Black Barons beat Indianapolis 9-1.

Billy Southworth led off the final game of their series with a double, but twisted his knee going into second base, and had to be removed from the game. Birmingham won the game despite 3 errors from Herman Long at SS, with Hank Aaron driving in 2 and Greg Maddux, Kent Mercker, Harley Young, and Bruce Chen combining to only allow 2 unearned runs over 8 innings.

After the game, Southworth--who will miss 2 weeks--was put on the DL with young phenom Nate Colbert being recalled for his first taste of big league action.

#Miami Cuban Giants

Heralded prospect Minnie Miñoso made his long-anticipated debut in the opening game of a doubleheader ... and promptly got hit by a pitch, being forced out of the game. It looks like Miñoso will only miss a few days, luckily. The Cuban Giants came back to beat Brooklyn 3-2 behind a 2-RBI single from Alejandro Oms and strong pitching from Camilo Pascual, Phenomenal Smith, and Aroldis Chapman, who picked up his 17th save.

Alexei Ramírez was moved to AAA and Carlos Peña was waived as Miami activated both Paul Molitor and Carlos Morán from the DL.

#Portland Sea Dogs

Walter Johnson took a no-hitter into the 9th inning against San Francisco, but Bobby Bonds led off the frame with a pinch-hit homerun, and Pedro Guerrero added another, chasing the Big Train from the game. Still, the Sea Dogs cruised to a 10-3 victory, led by 4 hits from Gil Hodges, 3 from Rogers Hornsby, and 4 RBI's from Jeff Burroughs. Burroughs, Hornsby, and Kent Hrbek all went deep for Portland.

The miracle of Wade Miller finally came to a close, as he lost his first game of the year, falling to 9-1 despite a decent outing on the mound. Iván Rodríguez had 4 hits and went deep twice in the 10-5 loss to San Francisco.

Hal Griggs was returned to AAA as Bob Porterfield came off the DL.

Series XXVI Preview: Indianapolis ABC's @ Wandering House of David

We looked at Indianapolis Series XVIII and Series X and saw the House of David in action in Series XVI and Series V.

Indianapolis ABC's

The ABC's have struggled all year, sitting 6 games under .500 and 9.5 off the pace in the Effa Manley Division. There have been some bright spots, especially offensively, where Johnny Bench continues to be among the best backstops in the league, slashing 295/411/564 and leading the team in HRs (20) and RBIs (64). The problem is Bench has been virtually the only power source for the ABC's, with only 3 other players in double digits in homeruns (Danny Hoffman and Bob Bescher with 11 and Hal Morris with 10). SS Denis Menke (305/394/431) has been a bit of a pleasant surprise, but the team is really hoping the return of Oscar Charleston and Joe Morgan from the DL can jump start a pretty anemic attack.

Quite controversially, Indianapolis has adopted a 6 man rotation, choosing almost at random between Dolf Luque, Rube Foster, Doc White, Johnny Cueto, David Price, and Willie Mitchell. White has been excellent, both in the bullpen and across 8 starts, but the rest are fairly identical, sporting ERA's in the 4's with decent secondary numbers. Rob Dibble has been excellent as a closer, with 20 saves.

Wandering House of David

The House of David are also 3rd in their division, but they sit 4 games over .500 and only 4 games back in the Bill James Division.

It's not clear how they're doing it, honestly. There is a lot of power here, with both George Stone (23) and Elrod Hendricks (21) having hit over 20 homeruns. Ernie Banks--3rd on the team with 17--leads the way with 63 RBIs. Stone has been superb, slashing 301/391/555, but that only puts him 3rd among the starters in OPS, with Pete Browning (341/380/584) and the blistering Anthony Rizzo (329/440/700) in front of him. Rizzo has to cool off at some point, with 7 homeruns in his first 25 games, but the success of the House of David may rest on Browning staying healthy, something that has been a bit of a struggle for him all year. Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg, and the surprising Dan Ford fill out a lineup that is pretty solid top to bottom.

Jack Taylor and Bob Rush have led a mediocre group of starters, although both Eddie Rommel and Kerry Wood have shown great promise in their first few big league appearances. Bruce Sutter is the closer, with Dick Tidrow and Lee Smith being the most effective arms out of the pen.

Projected Starters

Indianapolis pitcher listed first.

Doc White (5-1, 3.38) @ Frank Sullivan (6-7, 5.20)
Johnny Cueto (7-5, 4.94) @ Jack Taylor (8-8, 3.54)
David Price (4-5, 4.84) @ CC Sabathia (9-9, 4.81)
Dolf Luque (8-8, 4.68) @ Bob Rush (8-5, 4.41)

Prediction

Meh. I like Indianapolis in the first game behind White, but the rest is pretty much a toss-up. Let's say the House of David gets hot, and wins the final 3 to take the series, 3-1.

Series XXVI Best Games

In Series XXVI, we're going to look at a game that allowed some individual storylines to play out and then two series that featured a couple of great contests each.

Portland Sea Dogs @ New York Black Yankees, Game 2

The game itself isn't so interesting: Portland exploded for 8 runs in the top of the 5th inning, blowing it open en route to an 11-5 victory. But some of the details may have some impact on the rest of the season:
  • Portland's Hal Griggs, recalled for the start, was battered, giving up all 5 runs in 3 innings of work and seeing his MLB ERA balloon over 10. The challenge is that injuries are beginning to take their toll on the Sea Dogs' staff, and with Pascual Pérez injured later in the game, maybe Griggs sticks around? Atlee Hammaker's scoreless 3 plus innings of relief put him in a position to get a look as a spot starter from here on out.
  • Kent Hrbek had 2 hits and drove in 3, and tied New York's Babe Ruth for the WBL homerun lead with 30. Could Ruth be surpassed?
  • Rogers Hornsby has, despite hitting for good power, struggled since being acquired from Kansas City. But he's turning it around, scoring twice and driving in 2 in this game, and edging his numbers up. New York's Tommy Herr is in a similar position, but his 3-for-4 performance here is also part of a resurgence, having found some footing with his new team.
  • New York's bullpen just continues to struggle, but today actually had some decent innings, especially 2 hitless frames from Goose Gossage.

POR 11 (Hammaker 2-1) @ NYY 5 (Hoyt 8-5)
HRs: POR - Murcer (16), Hrbek (30), Hornsby (6); NYY - none.
Box Score

Baltimore Black Sox @ Detroit Wolverines, Games 1 and 3

This series was a matchup of league heavyweights and 2 of the games lived up to the billing.

In the series opener, Mike Mussina was dominant for Baltimore ... until he wasn't, and then the Black Sox' bullpen just collapsed, with Joe Beggs, Bob Miller, and Don Bessent combining to give up 5 runs in 1.1 innings, with Miller forced onto the DL with injury (a move that effectively ends the closer-by-committee for a while).

Detroit's pitching wasn't much better, but Si Johnson held it together for 5 plus, and Mike Henneman is quite a weapon in the bullpen, as the WBL leader in saves picked up his 26th of the season.
Detroit hit four homeruns in the game, with Bob Bailey's 3 run shot in the bottom of the 8th off Bessent being the deciding moment.

BAL 6 (Miller 3-2; Bessent 3 B Sv; Beggs 5 H) @ DET 8 (Lolich 1-1; Henneman 26 Sv)
HRs: BAL - Jacobson (6), Machado (3); DET - Greenberg (20), Jenkins (8), C. Davis (17), B. Bailey (16).
Box Score

Hal Newhouser would dominate in the 2nd game, leading Detroit to a 6-1 win. The most important note from that contest was Ned Garvin's injury, which turned out to be disastrous, sidelining the Brock Rutherford Award favorite for close to a year. But we're here to talk about Game 3, which pitted each team's current ace against each other--Baltimore's Dennis Martínez and Detroit's Johnny Marcum.

Both were excellent through 4, but Martínez lost the game in the 5th to the most unlikely of foes: Detroit's light hitting utility infielder, Sparky Adams, took him deep for his first longball of the year, giving the Wolverines a 3-2 lead. Each team would add one more, but again it was Henneman closing the door, despite surrendering a run on an RBI double from Bobby Wallace.

A nice, taut game.

BAL 3 (Martínez 10-7) @ DET 4 (Marcum 10-2; Henneman 27 Sv; Hiller 11 H)
HRs: BAL - none; DET - Adams (1).
Box Score

FWIW, Baltimore did win the final game to avoid the sweep.

Miami Cuban Giants @ Houston Colt 45's, Games 1 and 4

These teams split the series, but the more interesting games were the 2 victories by the Cuban Giants.

The story of game 1, at least early on, was missed opportunities. Miami's 2-way OF/P Eustaquio Pedroso, gave up 9 baserunners in the first 4 innings, but the Colt 45's managed only 1 run. Pedroso was tagged with a 3-run HR from Tony Gwynn in the 5th, but the score should have been much worse than 4-0.

Meanwhile, Houston's Stephen Strasburg was magnificent, twirling a 3 hit shutout through 7. In the 8th, Robin Yount led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly from Alan Ashby, chasing Strasburg from the game with a still comfortable 4-1 lead.

You can tell what's coming.

Houston's closer, Billy Wagner came in and gave up a game-tying 3-run moon shot to José Canseco. Miami's bullpen was excellent, with José Méndez, Ed Bauta, and Aroldis Chapman combining for 5.2 innings of 1-hit relief. Chapman was already gassed, so after he retired a batter, the Cuban Giants turned to Braden Looper as we headed to the 12th.

In the top of the frame, Houston's Scott Erickson could not get the final out, giving up a walk and 2 hits, the last being a 2-run single from Chris Hoiles to give Miami a 2 run lead. Looper gave up 4 hits in the bottom of the 12th, all singles, but escaped with the victory when José Cardenal gunned down George Brett at the plate to end the game.

Houston ended the game with 13 runners left on base, to Miami's 4. Offensive efficiency matters.

Thrilling.

MCG 6 (Looper 1-0) @ HOU 5 (Gregerson 0-1; Hoffman 6 H; Wagner 6 B Sv) [12 Innings]
HRS: MCG - Canseco (25); HOU - Gwynn (6).
Box Score

The series finale was somewhat similar. Here, though, both starters had excellent outings, with Miami's Ramón Martinez and Houston's Toad Ramsey essentially matching efforts, each surrendering only 2 runs.

When Jim Wynn took Braden Looper deep in the 8th for a 3-2 lead for Houston, the script seemed written: Mark Melancon has been a victory vulture all year, with a 9-2 record out of the bullpen. Again, though, Trevor Hoffman and Billy Wagner were unable to hold it--this time with more dire consequences, as both pitchers left with injuries (Wagner will only miss a few days, Hoffman is looking at a trip to the DL).

The late innings were highly tactical: Miami tied it because Carlos Morán, pinch hitting for Pete Runnels, scored from 1st on a José Canseco double.

Brad Lidge, who started the year as Houston's closer and was just recently recalled from AAA, matched Miami's Phenomenal Smith with great relief efforts (Lidge pitched 2 perfect frames, Smith allowed a single hit in 3.1 innings), but Houston turned to Dock Ellis, highly mediocre all year, in the 12th.

It didn't work well: Gary Sheffield doubled and, after Ellis was able to get 2 outs, Alan Ashby singled him home for the lead. Alejandro Oms pinch ran for Ashby, and scored on a single from Ryan Braun for a 5-3 lead for the Cuban Giants.

Aroldis Chapman shut the door, cementing the series split for Miami.
Hoffman's injury opened the door for Tug McGraw to be recalled from AAA for Houston.

MCG 5 (Smith 1-1; Chapman 18 Sv) @ HOU 3 (Ellis 0-5; Hoffman 1 B Sv)
HRs: MCG - Yount (8); HOU - Wynn (14)

Series XXVI Featured Matchup: Indianapolis ABC's @ Wandering House of David

Series preview here.

Game One: Doc White @ Frank Sullivan

This one was all about the House of David's Frank Sullivan, who had a no-hitter going through 5 innings. By that point, he had a 5-0 lead to work with, as Pete Browning and Anthony Rizzo went back-to-back with solo shots in the 4th, and Browning homered again in the 5th, this one a 2-run shot.

Indianapolis finally got a hit in the 6th, and scored a run, but it wasn't until the 8th that the game showed some life: a one-out single by Indianapolis' Barry Larkin and a walk to Denis Menke chased Sullivan. The House of David brought in Scott Downs, who got Edd Roush to ground towards shortstop, but Ernie Banks fumbled the ball, loading the bases on the error. Jake Stenzel singled, making the score 5-2.

Lee Smith relieved Downs, and with the infield in, induced a weak groundball from Dave Henderson. Ryne Sandberg was able to cut down the runner at home., and Oscar Charleston grounded out to end the threat.

A 2-run shot by Jim Edmonds put the game out of reach, making Bob Bescher's solo drive in the 9th merely window dressing.

IND 3 (White 5-2) @ HOD 7 (Sullivan 7-7; Smith 2 Sv)
HRs: IND - Bescher (12); HOD - Rizzo (8), Browning 2 (16), Edmonds (5)
Box Score

Game 2: Johnny Cueto @ Jack Taylor

Indianapolis got some good news before the game, as 2B Joe Morgan started a rehab assignment at AAA, and should be back with the ABC's in time for their next series.

The House of David surged ahead in the bottom of the first, with a leadoff homerun from Ryne Sandberg and a 2-run shot from Elrod Hendricks. The two of them did it again in the third, chasing Johnny Cueto from the game. Meanwhile, Jack Taylor was mowing them down, tossing a shutout through 6 innings.

Johnny Bench broke up the shutout with his 21st homerun of the year in the top of the 7th, and when Joey Votto went deep two batters later, that was it for Taylor.

Pete Browning and Jim Edmonds added homeruns for the final spread.

IND 2 (Cueto 7-6) @ HOD 8 (Taylor 9-8)
HRs: IND - Bench (21), Votto (3); HOD - Sandberg 2 (14), Hendricks 2 (23), Browning (17), Edmonds (6).
Box Score

Game 3: Rube Foster @ CC Sabathia

Perhaps the biggest news of the day was the House of David's George Stone being unavailable, and likely to miss the next few days with a fever.

Elrod Hendricks started the scoring in the bottom of the 1st with a 2 run shot off Rube Foster for an early 2-0 lead for the House of David. In the second, Anthony Rizzo doubled, moved to 3rd on an error by Indianapolis 2B, Barry Larkin, and scored on a deep sacrifice fly from Ron Santo.

The ABC's would get on the board in the 4th, as Jake Stenzel singled and scored on a double by Ed Charles. Hal Morris would double in Charles, and the score would narrow to 3-2. Hendricks hit his second homerun of the day, and a following single by Dan Ford chased Foster from the game. Ford would score when, on a Jim Edmonds double, Oscar Charleston's throw sailed over Johnny Bench's head for Charleston's first error of the year. Indianapolis' Rob Murphy got out of the inning without further damage, leaving the House of David ahead, 5-2.

After 7 strong innings, CC Sabathia turned the game over to his bullpen. That looked to be a mistake, as Scott Downs was greeted by an Edd Roush single and a walk to Denis Menke. Charleston brought them both home with a double down the rightfield line. Downs escaped further damage, leaving the House of David clinging to their lead, 5-4.

Lee Smith took care of Indianapolis in the 8th, with the House of David closer, Bruce Sutter, taking the mound in the top of the 9th. Roush led off with a double, but Sutter whiffed Menke and got Charleston to popout to center. Bench tied the game, scoring Roush with a double, but Dave Henderson flew out to Edmonds to end the inning.

On to extra innings ... in the bottom of the 10th, Hendricks singled with 2 outs and went to 3rd on a hit by Ford. Clay Carroll came into the game to face Rizzo ... who quietly grounded out, sending us to the 11th.

Roush walked, and scored on a double by Menke, who scored on a single by Bench. That put the ABC's on top, 7-5. Edmonds greeted Carroll in the bottom of the frame with his 7th homerun of the season, pulling the score back to 7-6. Pinch-hitter George Gore flew out to center, and Ernie Banks to left, but Sandberg sent a pitch into the LF seats on a line to tie the game once again.

Menke went deep in the top of the 13th, scoring Tommy Helms and, with 2 outs, Bench took Eddie Rommel deep and then, after a single by Henderson, Stenzel joined the party with a shot to right. The hits kept coming: Helms drove in 2 with a double, scoring on a single by Roush, and at the end of it all, Indianapolis had scored 8 times, taking a 15-7 lead.

The House of David would score in the bottom of the 13th on Edmonds 2nd homerun of the day and a 2-run double from Pete Browning, but Hendricks fanned to end the game, with the ABC's coming back for a 15-10 victory in 13 innings.

IND 15 (Mitchell 6-4) @ HOD 10 (Tidrow 4-5; Downs 4 H; Smith 8 H; Sutter 3 BSv) [13 Innings]
HRs: IND - Menke (4), Stenzel (7), Bench (22); HOD - Hendricks 2 (25), Edmonds 2 (8), Sandberg 15.
Box Score

Game Four: Chris Hammond @ Bob Rush

This six man rotation thing keeps leaving the ABC's in a lurch for an actual starter. They sent Virgil Trucks down, bringing up Chris Hammond for the start against the House of David's Bob Rush.

It wasn't needed in the end, as the game was rained out, rescheduled for July 27th.

TWIWBL 33.0: Series XXVI Notes

July 22

We are one series away from the trading deadline, so it seemed a good moment to check in on what teams may be doing what on the 27th.

Sellers

You never know what deals may emerge, but here are some veterans and/or players not looking to resign with their current teams that may be on the move. Probably the biggest change here are the Philadelphia Stars and the Kansas City Monarchs both seeming now to fall firmly in this category.
  • IF: Jose Reyes (LAA), Claude Ritchey (MEM)
  • OF: Rico Carty (PHI), Gavvy Cravath (PHI), Buck Freeman (PHI), Dave Henderson (IND)
  • SP: Luke Hamlin (KCM), Connie Johnson (KCM), Andy Pettitte (KCM).
  • RP: Rheal Cormier (PHI), Bob Howry (PHI), Michael Jackson (HOM), Josh Lindblom (HOM), Mike Norris (SFS), Jonathan Papelbon (MEM)

Buyers

Each of the four divisions can be seen as a two-team race at this point, so we'll look at each in turn, looking at both the teams we're assuming are selling and those that are looking to offload some talent.

Bill James Division

The Detroit Wolverines and the New York Gothams are neck and neck. Detroit could use help in the bullpen, while New York is (like many teams) looking for rotation help, and perhaps an infield upgrade.

Cum Posey Division

The Baltimore Black Sox retain the best record in the league, but it's getting closer. The Chicago American Giants are only 2 games back, and with Baltimore's Brock Rutherford Award favorite Ned Garvin out for the year, there does seem to be an opportunity to reel the Black Sox back to the pack. In addition to a replacement for Garvin, Baltimore could use a little more depth, especially on the IF. Chicago's offense is pretty much set but could also be in the market for rotation help.

Effa Manley Divison

The surprise continues: the Cleveland Spiders are starting to show some distance between them and the second place New York Black Yankees. The Spiders could use an upgrade on the left side of the infield while the Black Yankees are clearly in desperate need of bullpen help--to the point where they are almost certain to be willing to overpay.

Marvin Miller Division

The shocking rise of the Birmingham Black Barons continue, with the Portland Sea Dogs only 3.5 games ahead at this point. Birmingham needs to be careful: they were never supposed to be here and need to be aware of disturbing their current balance. Still, they could use offensive help, especially at C and SS. Portland would love to improve its bench.

Performance

Some things of note:
  • Los Angeles' Doug Radar is the first to triple digits, surpassing 100 RBI's on the year this series.
  • Stan Musial (Kansas City) and Babe Ruth (NYY) remain the only batters leading the league in more than a single category.

Batters

Top 2, league leaders bold as usual.

Dick Allen (CAG). 308/374/547. 10 3B.
Rico Carty (PHI). 285/356/453. 34 2B.
Ty Cobb (DET). 351/393/572.
Eric Davis (NYY). 278/348/542. 4.7 WAR.
Mike Epstein (HOM). 330/4334/532.
Rickey Henderson (SFS). 251/386/338. 75 BB, 70 SB.
Kent Hrbek (POR). 311/380/609. 31 HR.
Joe Jackson (CAG). 337/419/587. 78 R.
Reggie Jackson (SFS). 331/445/610.
Stan Musial (KCM). 338/394/601. 132 H, 37 2B.
Doug Radar (LAA). 332/389/545. 130 H, 100 RBI.
Tim Raines (OTT). 293/365/440. 71 SB.
Babe Ruth (NYY). 314/428/643. 31 HR, 93 RBI, 83 R, 75 BB, 5.5 WAR.
Louis Santop (CLE). 306/337/466. 10 3B.

Some of the less positive leaders:

SO: Willie Stargell (HOM), 146.
GIDP: Wade Boggs (MEM), 20.
CS: Reggie Jackson (SFS), 23.

Pitchers

Top 2 in each category, other than wins. There are 5 pitchers with 11 wins behind Gerrit Cole (LAA), but only Bill Byrd (BAL) is listed here, due to his WHIP.

Garvin does not have enough IP to hold onto the ERA crown as the season progresses.

Starters

Bill Byrd (BAL). 11-2, 3.09. 1.17 WHIP.
Gerrit Cole (LAA). 12-4, 4.24.
Don Drysedale (7-3), 1.15 WHIP.
Ned Garvin (BAL). 9-4, 2.80.
Lefty Grove (SFS). 10-7, 3.83, 158 K.
Ron Guidry (NYY). 5-9, 4.38. 149 K.
Walter Johnson (POR). 10-3, 3.65. 3.3 WAR.
Frank Knauss (BRK). 10-4, 3.07.
Alejandro Peña (BBB). 9-6, 3.45. 3.9 WAR.

Relievers

25 IP minimum for rate stats.

Terry Adams (CLE). 1-5, 3.24. 23 Sv, 1 H.
Mike Henneman (DET). 1-4, 3.48. 27 Sv.
Ken Howell (SFS). 3-4, 2.06. 4 Sv, 7 H, 0.98 WHIP.
AJ Minter (CAG). 1-0, 2.13. 19 Sv, 0.83 WHIP.
Mike Norris (SFS). 3-3, 1.71. 3 Sv, 10 H.
Ron Reed (PHI/CLE). 0-4, 2.90. 3 Sv, 16 H.
Ron Robinson (SFS). 4-3, 3.86. 13 H.
Jonny Venters (LAA). 3-3, 3.32. 5 Sv, 13 H.
Brian Wilson (SFS). 1-0, 1.11. 21 Sv.

TWIWBL 33.1: Series XXVI Notes - Bill James Division

#Detroit Wolverines

Hal Newhouser improved to 7-3 with a strong start (6.2 IP, 1 run, 8 Ks), and homeruns by Robbie Thompson and Ty Cobb drove the offense as the Wolverines beat Baltimore, 6-1.

#Los Angeles Angels

OF Wally Moon will miss a couple weeks, prompting the Angels to recall Spud Johnson from AAA.

Doug Radar had 4 hits (including a league-record tying 3 doubles) and Steve Garvey, who is hitting nearly .370 since joining the Angels, had 3, but it wasn't enough as Gerrit Cole struggled and Los Angeles fell to the Grays, 7-5.

Radar drove in his 100th run of the season with a sacrifice fly in a 10-5 loss to Homestead. Radar finished the game with 2 hits, but it wasn't enough.

#New York Gothams

Carson Smith, a key member of the Gothams' dominant bullpen, will be out close to a month. With a 1.80 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP, Carson will surely be missed. Jeremy Affeldt, almost as good at AAA as Smith was in the WBL, was recalled.

Pinky Higgins had 4 hits and both scored 3 runs and drove in 3 to lead the Gothams to an 11-5 demolition of Philadelphia. Carl Furillo added 3 hits and Brandon Crawford drove in 4 for New York.

Ned Garvin giving up 3 runs in 4 innings is rare: this time there was a cause, as the leading Cy Young contender left the Black Sox' game against Detroit with an elbow injury. While Baltimore's staff is deep, losing Garvin for any length of time would certainly hurt.

The news was about as bad as can be imagined, with Garvin out for the next 10 months with an elbow injury. Lindy McDaniel was recalled from AAA, with Jim Palmer sliding into the Black Sox rotation.

#Kansas City Monarchs

The news on Smokey Joe Wood was not good, as the pitcher will miss the rest of the season with nerve damage.

A mammoth, 511 ft grand slam from Boog Powell led the way as the Monarchs blew apart a pitcher duel with an 11 run 7th inning, beating Memphis 12-2. Ducky Medwick added 3 hits and Medwick, Ted Simmons, and Jack Rowe each drove in 2. Perhaps as importantly, although not involved in the decision, Bob Gibson threw 6 scoreless innings as he returned to the WBL after dominating AAA.

#Ottawa Mounties

Joe Mays not only lost his spot as the #5 starter, he lost his roster spot. An ERA north of 8 will tend to do that. Kirk Reuter was recalled.

#Cleveland Spiders

Reliever Doug Corbett hasn't been bad, but with the Spiders needing a starter due to Whit Wyatt's thumb injury not healing in time, Corbett was the odd man out, heading back to AAA. Ken Schrom was promoted for his WBL debut, although the club doesn't expect Schrom to stick around.

Two homeruns by Johnny Bates led Cleveland to a 12-3 lead over Ottawa in a game where Pat Malone improved to 11-5 on the year.

#New York Black Yankees

2 homeruns from Eric Davis (his 26th and 27th of the year) weren't enough, as the Black Yankees fell to Portland, 6-2.

TWIWBL 33.4: Series XXVI Notes - Marvin Miller Division

#Brooklyn Royal Giants

Nap Rucker's stay was brief, as the lefty was sent down to clear room for Ralph Branca to make a start at the big league level.

#Portland Sea Dogs

Mike Cuellar had 9 wins out of the bullpen when called upon to make his first start of the year. He tossed a solid 5 innings against the Black Yankees, getting the win and improving his record to 10-5. Rogers Hornsby and Gary Pettis (who pushed his average over .400) had 3 hits each and Hornsby and Kent Hrbek went deep for the Sea Dogs in the victory. Hrbek now has 29 dingers, good for 2nd in the league.

Unfortunately for Portland, their pitching staff was still in need of rest even after Cuellar's effort. That necessitated some roster moves, and Hughie Jennings was the odd man out, at least temporarily. Hal Griggs was recalled: Griggs struggled from the bullpen earlier in the year, but has been dominant at AAA since.

It didn't work: Griggs was rocked, and Pascual Pérez injured. The former was returned to AAA, the latter placed on the DL. Ray Fontenot was recalled from AAA, along with Ruben Sierra.

Bobby Murcer went deep twice and the Sea Dogs pounded out 14 hits in a 10-4 win over New York. Walter Johnson moved to 10-3 on the year with a strong 6 innings of work.

More rough news for the Sea Dogs: Joe Mauer's recovery hasn't gone so well, and will take at least another week before he's ready to return.

#San Francisco Sea Lions

Tommy Bridges has struggled since being acquired from Miami over the all-star break, posting an ERA approaching 9.00. Needing an emergency starter, the Sea Lions finally pulled the trigger, sending Bridges to AAA and recalling James Shields.

It didn't last: the Sea Lions needed another emergency starter, and Shields didn't do that well, so he headed back, with Rick Langford coming up to make the start. Langford was excellent: 1 run in 6 gutsy innings, so he should remain with the WBL for a while.

Reggie Jackson had quite a day: a record-tying 3 homeruns, 7 RBIs, 4 runs scored, and a hamstring injury that is likely to keep the Sea Lions' best offensive player out for at least a week. Pedro Guerrero, Bobby Bonds, and Jack Clark also went deep in the 12-5 win that also saw Tim Hudson's best start for San Francsico.
Jackson was put on the DL after the game, with 20 year old phenom Jimmie Foxx being called up to make his debut.

Series XXVII Preview: Detroit Wolverines @ Miami Cuban Giants

Two teams going in two different directions: Detroit (who we saw in Series XXI and Series IV) and Miami (Series XXII and Series XI).

The Wolverines lead the Bill James Division by 1.5 games, and sit 14 games above .500, tied with Portland for the second best record in the WBL (behind Baltimore). Miami, on the other hand, is tied with Memphis for the worst record in the league, languishing at 22 games under .500.

#Detroit Wolverines

They're just a solid team. Not best in the league at anything, but top 5 in almost everything, just lacking a bit of team speed. OF Ty Cobb not only leads the team, but the entire league, in batting at .351, and his OPS of .965 leads the Wolverines. But 1B Hank Greenberg is an equally important cog in their machine, slashing 306/372/586 and leading Detroit in RBIs (74). Greenberg is tied with OF Oscar Gamble for the team lead in HRs with 21, but Cobb (15), 3B Bob Bailey (16) and OF Chili Davis (17) are also all in double digits. SS George Davis at .694 is the only regular with an OPS under .700. Like I said, solid.

The rotation is led by Johnny Marcum, 10-2 with a 3.38 ERA, followed by two hurlers who did not start the year in their current roles: Hal Newhouser (7-3, 2.91) has been brilliant since his recall and Gene Conley (10-2, 3.27) was just too good to leave in the bullpen. Mike Henneman leads the WBL in saves with 27, and John Hiller has been quite effective getting the ball to him.

Solid.

#Miami Cuban Giants

José Canseco has been brilliant: leading the team in all 3 slash categories at 289/358/530 for an OPS just shy of .900 and a team-high 25 homeruns and 61 RBIs.

Beyond that ... Gary Sheffield has shown some signs of life lately, and Will Clark is second on the team in both HR (17) and RBI (56). 2B Pete Runnels has done well since being picked up from Memphis, And ... hey, have I mentioned José Canseco?

There are some other storylines here: how long can Martín Dihigo's defense--stunning as it is--preserve a roster spot for the eighteen year old who is slashing 169/210/208? Will Minnie Miñoso--the key acquisition over the all-star break for the Cuban Giants--get a chance to prove himself?

Camilo Pascual leads the staff in victories with 6, but also in losses with 10. Several pitchers have shown flashes of promise--Roenis Elías, Phenomenal Smith, José Méndez--but none have lasted. Closer Aroldis Chapman (18 saves and a 2.32 ERA) has been excellent, as has Ed Bauta (10 holds, 2.12 ERA).

And there's always Canseco ...

Projected Starters

Detroit listed first.

Gene Conley (10-2, 3.27) @ Roenis Elías (4-3, 4.97)
Si Johnson (4-6, 4.85) @ Rube Waddell (3-6, 4.20)
Hal Newhouser (7-3, 2.91) @ Eustaquio Pedroso (6-5, 5.73)
Johnny Marcum (10-2, 3.38) @ Camilo Pascual (6-10, 4.06)

Prediction

3-1 Detroit. It would be fun if Miami made it a series.

Series XXVII Best Games

For Series XXVII, we'll start with the ongoing miracle of the Birmingham Black Barons, touch on a couple of games with great starting pitching, and finish with an update to the saga of Greg Litton.

#House of David @ Birmingham, Game 2

The House of David scored 5 runs in the top of the first (2 on a Pete Browning triple, 2 more on a homerun from Dan Ford) to take an early 5-0 lead. Browning's production has been expected, Ford has come out of nowhere to cement a starting spot in their OF. Anthony Rizzo (who has a similar narrative and an even more impressive start than Ford) drove in another, and even when Birmingham's Bob Nieman went deep with a man on in the 3rd, it was still 6-2 in favor of the House of David.

Birmingham kept edged closer in the bottom of the 4th on a 2 run shot from Gene Tenace, but the game seemed well out of reach when the House of David scored 3 more in the top of the 5th, pushing the lead to 10-4.

It was a 5 run lead--10-5--in the bottom of the 8th. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th. Then 4 consecutive singles off Kerry Wood resulted in 3 runs, making it 10-7. But it's OK, right? The House of David still had its closer, Bruce Sutter, to handle the 9th, right?

Al Schweitzer walked, Hank Aaron singled, and Adrián González walked to load the bases, but Sutter got a double play from Pie Traynor. Tenace singled home Aaron, and Cupid Childs--who sure looks like a solution at 2B for Birmingham--singled. Sutter walked Frank McCormick, and that was all for him, bringing in Scott Downs ... who promptly gave up a game-winning hit to Herman Long, capping Birmingham's comeback.

Ryne Sandberg and Browning had 3 hits each for the House of David, with Browning driving in 4. McCormick had 4 hits for Birmingham, and Tenace and Childs had 3, with Childs scoring 4 times.

HOD 10 (Sutter 2-2; Smith 9 H; Downs 2 B Sv) @ BBB 11 (Young 2-4)
HRs: HOD - Ford (9); BBB - Nieman (8), Tenace (10).
Box Score

San Francisco Sea Lions @ New York Gothams, Game 1

A good old fashioned pitching duel. San Francisco's Eddie Plank and New York's Christy Mathewson each went 8 strong innings. Mathewson allowed only 3 hits and 2 runs and, if anything, Plank was even better, allowing a single run and fanning 9. That turned the game over to the bullpens with the Sea Lions up, 2-1. The Gothams' Mike Norris pitched a perfect 9th, preserving his sub-2.00 ERA. San Francisco's closer, Rod Beck, walked Jimmy Sheckard and gave up a single to Johnny Callison. That brought up John Kerins, who had doubled home the Gothams' only run earlier in the game ... he took Beck deep for a 3-run homer, and a walkoff win for New York.

SFS 2 (Beck 1-4, 5 B Sv) @ NYG 4 (Norris 4-3)
HRs: SFS - none; NYG - Kerins (4).
Box Score

#New York Black Yankees @ Chicago American Giants, Game 1

This one started with great pitching, as New York's Jack Scott and Chicago's Mark Buehrle locked horns through the early going. Solo homers by Joe Jackson and Derek Jeter left the game tied at 1 heading to the bttom of the 6th, when Frank Thomas took Lady Baldwin--on in relief of Scott--deep for a 2-run shot for a 3-1 lead for the American Giants.

We stayed that way until the top of the 9th, when Chicago's closer, AJ Minter, took the mound. Singles from Albert Belle, Lou Gehrig, and Don Mattingly loaded the bases bringing up the person Chicago least wanted to see in this situation, the ever-dangerous Babe Ruth. Ruth singled in 2 runs to tie the game and, perhaps even worse for Chicago, Minter was forced out clutching his elbow.

New York had emptied the bench, and now had a purely makeshift infield: Manny Sanguillén at first, Mattingly at 3B, and Mike Schmidt at SS. But they survived the inning, which took us to the 10th. Again 3 singles loaded the bases (this time by Thurman Munson, Mickey Mantle, and Sanguillén). Munson scored on a passed ball, Mantle on a sacrifice fly, and Sanguillén on a single by Mattingly. New York now lead 6-3.

José Abreu singled to lead off the bottom of the frame and New York brought in Sparky Lyle, the poster child for their much maligned bullpen. Could Lyle redeem himself and, perhaps, his season?

You know the answer: he struck out the first two batters he faced, but walked Jackson and Thomas to load the bases, and then Mike Fiore to force in a run. Dick Allen singled and Cole Hamels replaced the clearly dejected Lyle ... only to allow a game winning, walk-off single to Cristóbal Torriente.

Minter will head to the DL, with Ken Sanders being recalled to Chicago.

NYY 6 (Lyle 0-3; Hamels 1 B Sv) @ CAG 7 (Walsh 5-3; Dixon 8 H; Minter 2 B Sv) [10 Innings]
HRs: NYY - Jeter (8); CAG - Jackson (22), Thomas (20).
Box Score

Portland Sea Dogs @ Memphis Red Sox, Games 3 & 4

We close out with an update on Greg Litton, who has, somehow, someway, remained with Portland all year despite being perhaps the worst offensive regular in the league. Litton sticks around because he plays 6 positions, and most decently, allowing the Sea Dogs to conserve precious roster spots.

And in these two games against Memphis, miraculously, he found a way to hit the ball, going 7 for 9 across the 2 contests, both of which were won by Portland in 10 innings. That raised Litton's average for the year to a whopping .230.

All four games went to extra innings, and by the time the 2nd two games rolled around, both bullpens were pretty much shredded.

In game 3, Portland was forced to throw the (so far) thoroughly ineffective Hal Griggs out for the start. He struggled as expected, but so did Mike Cuellar in relief, which was a bit of a surprise. However, nobody for Memphis could get consistent outs: not Len Barker, who started and gave up 4 runs in 6 IP, not Bill Doak, who was hit hard for 3 runs in his 2.2 IP, and not Nixey Callahan, who ultimately took the loss. Memphis outhit Portland, 16 to 11, with Claude Ritchey, Ted Williams, and Bill White each knocking out 3 in the loss.

The final game of the series saw Portland's Walter Johnson and Memphis' Jon Lester each throw 7 strong innings, but the Sea Dogs' bullpen was a notch better. Both teams asked their closers to stretch out, and Portland's Elmer Brown didn't give up a hit in his 2 innings, while Jonathan Papelbon hit a batter and gave up 2 hits--the last an RBI single by Adrián Beltré--to take the loss.

POR 8 (Trout 6-3) @ MEM 7 (Callahan 5-8; Doak 1 B Sv) [10 Innings]
HRs: POR - Lee (1); Fregosi (12); MEM - Williams (20).
Box Score

POR 4 (Brown 3-4; Hammaker 1 B Sv) @ MEM 3 (Papelbon 0-6) [10 Innings]
HRs: POR - none; MEM - White (14).

Series XXVII Featured Matchup: Detroit Wolverines @ Miami Cuban Giants

Series preview here.

Game 1: Gene Conley @ Roenis Elias

Detroit scored first after loading the bases in the 2nd, but only managed a single tally on an RBI groundout by Robby Thompson. Will Clark tied it in the bottom of the frame with his 18th homerun of the season.

Roenis Elias has been on a hot streak, and it continued here, as he settled down, allowing 3 hits while striking out 8 over 6 innings. Detroit's Gene Conley has matched him frame for frame, allowing only 1 run on 2 hits in the same stretch.

In the bottom of the 6th, things took an unlikely turn: Martín Dihigo, he of the .170 average, launched a pitch from Conley nearly 450 feet into leftfield for his first homerun and a 2-1 lead for Miami. Gary Sheffield tripled home a run to make it 3-1, ending Conley's day in favor of Mickey Lolich.

With 2 outs in the 7th, Elias gave up a solo shot to Al Kaline--the first of his WBL career. That brought in Chris Resop, who closed it out preserving the one run lead for Miami.

Alan Ashby led off the bottom of the 7th with a single, and Paul Molitor came on to run. Two outs later, and Dihigo was up again, this time against Detroit's reliever Kevin Hart. With the lead, the Cuban Giants kept Dihigo in the game for his glove. He delivered a much more typical response, grounding out weakly to second to end the inning.

It all worked out: Resop and Ed Bauta passed the baton to Aroldis Chapman, who shut the door in the 9th.

DET 2 (Conley 10-3) @ MCG 3 (Elias 5-3; Chapman 19 Sv; Resop 1 H; Bauta 11 H)
HRs: DET - Kaline (1); MCG - Clark (18), Dihigo (1).
Box Score

Game 2: Si Johnson @ Rube Waddell

Detroit comes into the game with a bit of an infield crisis: Sparky Adams is carrying a knock, and both Bob Bailey and George Davis are showing signs of wear and tear. Since they all back each other up at 3B and SS, two of the three are going to forced into action: today, it's Davis and Bailey.

Will Clark's 19th homerun of the year put Miami up 3-0 in the bottom of the first. And that was it through 5 innings. Si Johnson had settled down after Clark's blast, and Miami's starter, Rube Waddell had yet to give up a hit.

Geoff Jenkins broke up the no-no with a single to lead off the 6th for Detroit, and singles from Bailey and Hank Greenberg put the Wolverines on the board.

In the bottom of the frame, Johnson issued a walk to load the bases, bringing in Mickey Lolich, who promptly forced in a run with a walk to Carlos Morán, increasing Miami's lead to 4-1.

Waddell got one out on the 7th, but a hit from Davis and a walk to Robby Thompson turned the game over the Cuban Giants' bullpen. Phenomenal Smith whiffed Jenkins, but immediately grabbed his left shoulder, and had to leave the game.

José Méndez replaced Smith, and shut down Detroit. He gave up a hit in the 9th, giving way to Ed Bauta, who completed the victory, giving Miami a surprising 2-0 lead in the series.

DET 1 (Johnson 4-7) @ MCG 4 (Waddell 4-6; Bauta 1 Sv; Smith 4 H; Méndez 2 H)
HRs: Det - none; MCG - Clark (19).
Box Score

Game 3: Hal Newhouser @ Eustaquio Pedroso

The matchup certainly favors the Wolverines to get back into the series, with Hal Newhouser and his sub-3.00 ERA going against Eustaquio Pedroso, who is in real danger of losing his rotation spot.

And, you know, just because ... Pedroso gets through the top of the first without damage, and Newhouser walks Pete Runnels, Minnie Miñoso, and Gary Sheffield to start the bottom of the frame. But José Canseco whiffed and Ryan Braun grounded into a double play, so we stay scoreless.

Geoff Jenkins took Pedroso deep for a 1-0 Detroit lead in the second, but Sheffield sent a Newhouser pitch in the 3rd deep into the night, putting Miami up 2-1.

Martín Dihigo was forced out of the game with a back injury in the 6th after a hard slide into second and Paul Molitor, who replaced him, scored on a single by Runnels. Miami loaded the bases again, but again Canseco and Braun failed to deliver, so we headed to the 6th with the Cuban Giants ahead, 3-1.

That was it for Pedroso, who had pitched gamely in one of his better outings of the year. His reliever, Braden Looper, gave up a leadoff double to Chili Davis, but escaped with only 1 run scoring, making it a 1 run game at 3-2.

Newhouser didn't finish the 6th, but Justin Verlander escaped without giving up a run. Looper, on the other hand, gave up a double to Robby Thompson and a single to Bob Bailey to lead off the 7th. Looper was relieved by Chris Resop who gave up a single to Ty Cobb to tie the game at 3. An RBI double from Hank Greenberg and a sacrifice fly by Davis put the Wolverines up, 5-3.

Cobb took Aroldis Chapman deep in the top of the 9th, giving Mike Henneman the ball with a 3-run lead, 6-3. Which seemed plenty for the WBL's save leader, but Canseco and Robin Yount each hit solo homeruns, closing it to 6-5. Alan Ashby's soft line was speared by Thompson, though, to end the game.

Cobb ended the day with 4 hits, 2 runs, and 2 RBI's, raising his league-leading average to .351.

After the game, Dihigo was placed on the DL, with Tony Taylor being recalled.

DET 6 (Verlander 8-3; Henneman 28 Sv; Napier 6 H) @ MCG 5 (Looper 1-1; Resop 1 BSv)
HRs: DET - Jenkins (9), Cobb (16); MCG - Sheffield (6), Canseco (26), Yount (9).
Box Score

Game 4: Johnny Marcum @ Camilo Pascual

Before the game, Miami continued to get bad news from their medical staff as Phenomenal Smith--excellent in his early time with the Cuban Giants--will miss about a year with an elbow injury. That prompted the recall of Ricky Nolasco from AAA.

The pitching matchup of the series finale was the best of the four games, with Johnny Marcum (10-2, 3.38) taking on Camilo Pascual, Miami's most consistent starter all season.

Detroit pushed across a run in the opening inning on a wild pitch, but Miami tied it up in the bottom of the second with Alan Ashby's 7th homerun of the year. The Wolverines regained the lead on a deep sacrifice fly from Hank Greenberg, scoring George Davis. But again Miami would reply in the next inning, tying the game on a triple from José Cardenal, scoring Will Clark. Cardenal would score on a single from Robin Yount, giving the Cuban Giants their first lead of the day, 3-2.

Each team would score a run on a sacrifice fly in the 5th, making it 4-3 in favor of Miami.

Marcum was the first starter to be chased from the game, giving way to Matt Anderson in the bottom of the 6th, but Anderson was able to close the door with runners on base, keeping the score 4-3.

José Méndez relieved Pascual in the top of the 8th and retired Cobb, Greenberg, and Oscar Gamble--no mean feat. Chili Davis led off the 9th against Méndez with a single, but Detroit was unable to bring him around, and Miami emerged with the victory and the very surprising series win.

DET 3 (Marcum 10-3) @ MCG 4 (Pascual 7-10; Méndez 1 Sv)
HRs: DET - none; MCG - Ashby (7).

TWIWBL 34.0: Series XXVII Notes

July 27th

{ The tables in this post are a nightmare to make show up right in the forum. Head to https://wbl.dmlco.com/wp/2023/02/27/...s-xxvii-notes/ if you want the full experience. }

Let's Talk About D, Baby

While the rest of the league is buzzing with trade talk, let's take a look at what the game tells us about flashing the leather. We'll go by position, trying to get a sense of the best fielders in the league so far.

C (500 IP min)

Thurman Munson of the New York Black Yankees has over 150 more total chances than Homestead's Josh Gibson, having started 86 games behind the plate. That has to count for something. Of starting catchers, Baltimore's Curt Blefary leads in cERA with 4.08, and Cleveland's Louis Santop--yet to turn 20--leads the league in framing runs--1.2 ahead of Gibson. In terms of gunning down base runners, everyone is clustered around 33% or so--Emil Gross (Ottawa) was way up at 46%, but couldn't hit enough to stay in the league and Alan Ashby (Miami) has been excellent at 36% since taking over for Miami. Looking at all of that, it's got to be Munson, Gibson, Blefary, or Santop, with apologies to Indianapolis' Johnny Bench and the House of David's Elrod Hendricks.

Code:
IP TC E RTO% cERA FRM
 C. Blefary (BAL) 599 401 11 29.4 4.08 -1.2
 J. Gibson (HOM) 718 559 14 27.2 5.77 1.5
 T. Munson (NYY) 765 719 5 33.0 4.72 -1.3
 L. Santop (CLE) 624 542 2 32.6 4.20 2.7
IP=Innings Played; TC=Total Chances; E=Errors; RTO%=Runners Thrown Out %; cERA=Catching ERA; FRM=Framing Runs Saved

I think Santop takes it, but I would be OK if Munson's higher usage swung it to him.

1B (600 IP min)

Philadelphia's Ted Kluszewski has the best fielding percentage (.996), having committed only 3 errors, but trails well behind Dan McGann (BAL)'s league leading 10.20 Range Factor. Will Clark of the Miami Cuban Giants leads in Zone Rating at 3.3. So McGann makes the most plays overall, but Clark makes the most plays that other 1B miss.

Code:
IP TC E PCT RNG ZR
 Will Clark (MCG) 791 818 5 .994 9.25 3.3
 Ted Kluszewski (PHI) 676 711 3 .996 9.43 1.0
 Dan McGann (BAL) 749 854 5 .994 10.20 2.5
 Bill White (MEM) 788 814 4 .995 9.25 1.8
IP=Innings Played; TC=Total Chances; E=Errors; PCT=Fielding %; RNG=Range Factor; ZR=Zone Rating

It comes down to whether you think McGann's RNG is more a product of his glovework or the superior Black Sox pitching staff. For me, Clark making plays nobody else in the league makes takes it.

2B (600 IP min)

Cleveland's Chuck Knoblauch and San Francisco's Jimmy Bloodworth each sport a .993 Fielding Percentage with only 3 errors each. The House of David's Ryne Sandberg has, by a fair bit, played the most at 2B, making his leading the league in Range Factor more impressive. The New York Gotham's Cookie Rojas leads in ZR, trailed by Chicago's Eddie Collins. Those are the contenders.

Code:
IP TC E PCT RNG ZR
 Jimmy Bloodworth (SFS) 753 423 3 .993 5.02 3.7
 Eddie Collins (CAG) 715 390 5 .987 4.85 5.5
 Chuck Knoblauch (CLE) 801 426 3 .993 4.75 -1.8
 Cookie Rojas (NYG) 703 369 3 .992 4.68 6.5
 Ryne Sandberg (HOD) 850 524 7 .987 5.48 0.8
IP=Innings Played; TC=Total Chances; E=Errors; PCT=Fielding %; RNG=Range Factor; ZR=Zone Rating

I can't get away from Rojas. Behind him it's rough: Collins makes some great plays, but Sandberg's greater usage may give him the edge.

3B (600 IP min)

Mike Schmidt of the Black Yankees has the highest fielding percentage, Ottawa's Anthony Rendon leads in Range Factor, and Philadelphia's Scott Rolen has a massive edge in Zone Rating. It's hard to put together.

Code:
IP TC E PCT RNG ZR
 Ron Cey (BRK) 808 221 6 .973 2.39 5.4
 Anthony Rendon (OTT) 853 266 7 .974 2.73 1.8
 Scott Rolen (PHI) 813 240 5 .979 2.60 8.5
 Mike Schmidt (NYY) 677 193 3 .984 2.53 6.3
IP=Innings Played; TC=Total Chances; E=Errors; PCT=Fielding %; RNG=Range Factor; ZR=Zone Rating

Rendon's ZR confirms that his other stats are really a product of being on the field a lot. I think that leaves Rolen and Schmidt pretty much neck and neck.

SS (550 IP min)

The lower requirement is basically to allow Philadelphia's Mickey Doolin to be listed. Homstead's Arky Vaughan has played the most at SS, giving him roughly 20% more chances than the next few shortstops. Couple that with only 5 errors for a .990 PCT and Vaughan has to be in the argument. George Wright (Los Angeles) has a .995 PCT with only 2 errors, which is remarkable. Vaughan also leads in RNG, and is one of 3 SS with a ZR over 10, along with Detroit's George Davis and Kansas City's Ozzie Smith.

Code:
IP TC E PCT RNG ZR
 George Davis (DET) 855 479 12 .975 4.91 13.0
 Mickey Doolin (PHI) 597 343 5 .985 5.10 8.0
 Ozzie Smith (KCM) 868 467 5 .989 4.79 12.5
 Arky Vaughan (HOM) 884 520 5 .990 5.24 10.1
 George Wright (LAA) 754 411 2 .995 4.88 9.8
IP=Innings Played; TC=Total Chances; E=Errors; PCT=Fielding %; RNG=Range Factor; ZR=Zone Rating

You gotta' give it to Wright, right? But after that, how do you figure out the difference between Smith and Vaughan? Smith is more spectacular, Vaughan more steady ... I've always been a sucker for the spectacular.

LF (500 IP min)

Homestead's Rick Reichardt has spent the most time out there, has the best RNG among qualifiers, and leads LFers with 10 OF Kills. Los Angeles' Don Buford and Ottawa's Phil Bradley are second with 6, so that's quite a gap. There are six--SIX--LFers who qualify who are yet to make an error. Of those, only Brooklyn's Roy White and Detroit's Oscar Gamble have positive supporting metrics as well. White has routinely pulled of the spectacular, making roughly 4 additional plays in LF than the Gotham's Jimmy Sheckard and San Francisco's Rickey Henderson.

Code:
IP TC A E PCT RNG ZR
 Phil Bradley (OTT) 552 121 6 0 1.000 1.97 -1.9
 Don Buford (LAA) 629 144 6 3 .979 2.02 1.0
 Oscar Gamble (DET) 535 118 2 0 1.000 1.99 1.5
 Rickey Henderson (SFS) 689 173 5 3 .983 2.22 2.7
 Rick Reichardt (HOM) 799 211 10 2 .991 2.35 -1.2
 Jimmy Sheckard (NYG) 865 207 5 4 .981 2.11 2.6
 Roy White (BRK) 865 204 2 0 1.000 2.12 6.7
IP=Innings Played; TC=Total Chances; A=Assists; E=Errors; PCT=Fielding %; RNG=Range Factor; ZR=Zone Rating

I think White has to get the nod here, and behind him it's a bit f a jumble. Reichardt is far from spectacular, but he's added twice as many cold, hard outs than the next contenders without many miscues, so he gets a nod despite the negative ZR.

CF (600 IP min)

The Gothams' Willie Mays has 15 OF kills to lead the way, but of note is Ottawa's Ken Griffey, Jr., who has 13 in half the games. Griffey, currently at AAA, doesn't qualify here, but what an arm! Baltimore's Paul Blair has yet to make an error. Mays and Philadelphia's Willie Davis make the most plays, with Blair, Mays, and Birmingham's Curtis Granderson leading in ZR.

There are others having strong years--Kansas City's Willie McGee, Memphis' Reggie Smith, and Detroit's Chili Davis spring to mind--but it's really between those initial four names.

Code:
IP TC A E PCT RNG ZR
 Paul Blair (BAL) 801 303 8 0 1.000 3.40 9.0
 Willie Davis (PHI) 781 323 7 2 .994 3.70 5.2
 Curtis Granderson (BBB) 631 247 10 3 .988 3.48 6.4
 Willie Mays (NYG) 899 381 15 2 .995 3.79 7.7
IP=Innings Played; TC=Total Chances; A=Assists; E=Errors; PCT=Fielding %; RNG=Range Factor; ZR=Zone Rating

Mays and Blair seem the easy choices here.

RF (500 IP min)

RF is probably the most difficult of the OF spots to evaluate. The Gothams' Johnny Callison leads in OF Kills, but with only 8. Callison is tied with Homestead's Roberto Clemente in ZR, far, far ahead of the next cluster. Jeff Burroughs (POR) has yet to make an error, but the rest of his numbers aren't terribly impressive. The House of David's Dan Ford leads in RNG and is solid enough elsewhere.

The challenge is that several of the best in RF--Miami's Alejandro Oms, Indianapolis' Oscar Charleston, and Ottawa's Larry Walker--don't qualify here. Walker especially draws the eye, with 7 Kills and great peripheral numbers. But all of them are under 400 innings.

Code:
IP TC A E PCT RNG ZR
 Johnny Callison (NYG) 671 181 8 1 .994 2.41 6.2
 Roberto Clemente (HOM) 747 194 4 2 .990 2.31 6.2
 Dan Ford (HOD) 542 160 5 4 .975 2.59 1.2
IP=Innings Played; TC=Total Chances; A=Assists; E=Errors; PCT=Fielding %; RNG=Range Factor; ZR=Zone Rating

I think it's pretty clear that Ford is in third place here and I think it's hard to push Clemente above Callison.

SP (100 IP min)

Sample size is clearly an issue here, but the Gothams' Gaylord Perry had handled the most chances and leads in RNG. Jack Taylor (HOD) and Dutch Leonard (BRK) lead in ZR. Unwinding a pitcher's responsibility for controlling stolen bases is hard, but since we know that, on the whole, the league runs about 33% in terms of cutting them down, we can look for who is far above that: Leonard shows up, but if we look at those with at least 10 attempts against them, we are looking at San Francisco's Eddie Plank, Taylor, and Portland's Jerry Koosman.

Code:
   IP TC RNG ZR RTO%
 Jerry Koosman (POR) 119 12 0.83 2.2 46
 Dutch Leonard (BRK) 139 18 1.17 2.4 67
 Gaylord Perry (NYG) 117 27 1.92 -0.5 21
 Eddie Plank (SFS) 116 13 0.93 1.8 64
 Jack Taylor (HOD) 142 21 1.26 2.5 56
IP=Innings Played; TC=Total Chances; RNG=Range Factor; ZR=Zone Rating; RTO%=Runners Thrown Out %

I think this ends up going to Taylor and Leonard, but there will probably be more churn here than in other fielding evaluations between now and the end of the season.

Defense is so hard to evaluate, right? Despite being the only team with 3 players listed here, the Gothams aren't at the top of any of the team fielding ratings.

Looking at overall mentions may be more interesting--here is the list of players considered above, by team.

5 - New York Gothams
4 - Homestead; Philadelphia
3 - Baltimore; Brooklyn; House of David; San Francisco
2 - Cleveland; Detroit; Los Angeles; New York Black Yankees; Ottawa
1 - Birmingham; Chicago; Kansas City; Memphis; Miami; Portland
0 - Houston

Yeah, not any better actually. The Gothams are among the best teams in the league, but both Homestead and Philadelphia are most decidedly not.

Defense. Shrug.

TWIWBL 34.1: Series XXVII Notes – Bill James Division

#Los Angeles Angels

The Angels have been desperate for starting pitching for a while, behind the hard-throwing duo of Gerrit Cole and Nolan Ryan. In a somewhat desperate move, they sent Chuck Finley, Tom Seaver, and Mike Smith to AAA, bringing back up Harry Howell, Sid Fernandez, and Jason Vargas.

Homeruns from Mike Trout and Carlos Delgado powered the Angels to a 12-1 victory over Kansas City in a game which, perhaps more importantly, both Doc Gooden and Fernandez pitched well.

#Memphis Red Sox

Wade Boggs hit a mammoth homerun to lead off the bottom of the 10th giving the Red Sox a 6-5 win over Portland.

#New York Gothams

The Gothams hit 5 homeruns in a 16-7 rout of San Francisco. Joe Adcock started it with a grandslam, and Jimmy Sheckard, Willie Mays, Eugenio Suárez, and Johnny Callison all going deep as well. Mays and Callison had 4 hits each; Adcock and Callions each drove in 4, and Mays scored 4 times as New York pounded out 21 hits in helping Juan Marichal improve to 9-6.

#Wandering House of David

Dan Ford had 4 hits--2 of which were homeruns--and 5 RBI, leading the House of David to a 9-5 victory over surging Birmingham. Ryne Sandberg also had 4 hits, including his 16th homerun of the year, as Bob Rush threw 7 strong innings moving to 9-5 on the year.

#Baltimore Black Sox

The Black Sox continue to have to retool their pitching, as Bob Miller will be out for about 5 weeks with hard-throwing John Wetteland joining the big league club.

#Houston Colt 45s

Hunter Pence was returned to AAA San Antonio with Casey Stengel's return from the DL.

#Ottawa Mounties

Chris Leroux was sent to AAA with Clark Griffith being recalled to make an emergency start for Ottawa.

TWIWBL 34.3: Series XXVII Notes – Effa Manley Division

#Cleveland Spiders

Needing a starter, the Spiders put Whit Wyatt on the DL while still awaiting a full diagnosis of his injury. Sudden Sam McDowell was recalled for the game against Homestead. McDowell struggled mightily, but Lance Berkman won the game with a walk-off grandslam, his 13th of the year and 7th since joining the Spiders. Chuck Knoblauch and Johnny Bates added 3 hits each.

Stan Coveleski improved to 10-2 on the year with 8 good innings in a 5-3 win over Homestead.

4 hits by Kenny Lofton, 3 from Sammy Strang, and 2 homeruns from Jake Stahl weren't enough, as Knoblauch popped out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th to thwart a furious comeback from a 9 run deficit in a game Cleveland lost, 11-10.

The news on Wyatt was quite bad, as he will miss close to a year with an elbow injury. This makes the Spiders even more likely to pursue some trades tomorrow.

#Indianapolis ABC's

Barry Larkin just never could get it going for the ABC's and Joe Morgan's return from his rehab assignment spelled Larkin's return to AAA. Morgan picked right up in his first game back, scoring twice on 2 hits and 2 walks, and Johnny Bench added 3 hits as Doc White improved to 6-2 with the 6-3 victory over Ottawa.

Morgan's 4 walks in a 10-6 loss to Ottawa tied a league record. It was a frustrating game for the ABC's, as they left a staggering 15 runners on base int he contest, including 8 in scoring position with 2 outs. Hal Morris, Bob Bescher, and Denis Menke each had 3 hits, to no avail.

#New York Black Yankees

The Yankees have finally abandoned their bullpen. The need for a starter forced a move, with Sparky Lyle heading to AAA and Dave Righetti, who has excelled since struggling in the WBL earlier in the season, was recalled. Righetti responded with 6 strong innings in a 9-1 victory for New York. Eric Davis, Don Mattingly, and Lou Gehrig each had 2 hits, and Babe Ruth regained the league lead with his 32nd homerun.

#Philadelphia Stars

Tom Sturdivant's stay at the WBL was brief, as the righthander was outright waived to clear room for Tim Belcher to make the start.

Series XXVIII Preview: Cleveland Spiders @ Kansas City Monarchs

We focused on the Cleveland Spiders in Series VII and Series XIX and on the Kansas City Monarchs way back when in Series VIII and Series X. Since then, a lot has changed: Cleveland sits atop the Effa Manley Division and Kansas City has, effectively, given up on the early promise of their season.

Cleveland Spiders

The Spiders have a 4.5 game lead heading into August, and have gone from "a decent enough team" to a favorite to make the post-season. They've retooled their infield, bringing in Arky Vaughan, but will continue to depend on excellent starting pitching and a balanced offense to carry them through.

On the mound, they've lost Whit Wyatt, which will hurt, but the trio of Cy Young (8-7, 4.68), Pat Malone (11-5, 3.84), and Stan Coveleski (10-2, 3.55) has been excellent (if, in Young's case, a bit erratic), and the back of the bullpen--closer Terry Adams (24 saves) and the duo of Cory Gearrin and Chuck Porter--is as good as there is. Ron Reed has struggled some since being brought in at the all-star break, which is something to watch, as is the progress of Bob Feller, recently recalled from AAA.

Offensively, it's all about Ron Blomberg, who leads the team across the board with a 338/407/649 slash line, 31 homeruns, 80 runs scored, and 87 RBIs. Jake Stahl and John Ellis have been spectacular, and Johnny Bates, Chuck Knoblauch, Louis Santop, and Lance Berkman (slashing 287/439/500 since arriving in Cleveland) excellent. If Vaughan can have a similar impact to Berkman, the Spiders may be spinning a web towards a championship.

Kansas City Monarchs

The Monarchs may have a huge impact on the postseason through the talent they've let go: Rogers Hornsby (Portland), Andy Pettitte (Birmingham), and Connie Johnson (Baltimore) all have shot at dramatically impacting their new homes fortune in the postseason.

The team that remains is still solid. The occasionally-brilliant Luke Hamlin leads the starters with 7 wins, and there is literally no ceiling on what Bob Gibson may do now that he's part of the rotation. Jeff Pfeffer has 15 saves, and the bullpen has been strong getting him the ball.

Stan Musial leads the offense, slashing 332/391/594 with 21 homeruns. Albert Pujols is tied with Musial in RBIs with 77, and second in homeruns with 17. Boog Powell has been quietly spectacular, with an OBP over 400. Throw in Ducky Medwick, Robinson Canó, and Willie McGee, and this offense will continue to score runs.

Projected Starters

Cleveland's starter listed first.

Pat Malone (11-5, 3.84) @ Bob Gibson (0-1, 3.68)
Bill Steen (8-2, 3.83) @ Luke Hamlin (7-9, 5.04)
Mel Harder (3-1, 3.95) @ Rube Marquard (4-9, 6.12)
Stan Coveleski (10-2, 3.55) @ Adam Wainwright (1-4, 5.70)

Prediction

The strengths of each team collide head-on: Cleveland's starting pitching against the Monarchs' bats. But Cleveland can hit a bit, too, so I think they take 3 out of 4.

Series XXVIII Best Games

Four games this time out, without a clear theme, so we'll just take them in the order they happened.

#Brooklyn Royal Giants @ Wandering House of David, Game 1

Brooklyn's Frank Knauss and the House of David's Bob Rush came into this one as two of the hottest arms in the league ... so naturally, they lasted under 5 innings combined, giving up 7 runs each. Brooklyn got a 2-run homerun from Beals Becker and a 2-run hit from Pete Browning en route to its touchdown while the House of David benefitted from a 3-run shot from Elrod Hendricks and a 2-run blast from Duke Snider.

Brooklyn's John Briggs homered in the top of the 5th for an 8-7 lead for Brooklyn, but the House of David came back with 5 in the bottom of the 8th, keyed by Ernie Banks' 3-run shot and a solo shot from Joe Harris in his first WBL start. That made it 12-8 and set the stage for an entertaining 9th inning.

2 singles and a walk loaded the bases and brought in the House of David's closer, Bruce Sutter. Sutter was off, giving up hits to Becker and Roy White, but escaped by getting the final 2 outs with the bases loaded.

Ed Bauta got rocked in his debut for the House of David and Trevor Hildenberger's collapse overshadowed good work by Brooklyn's Ralph Branca and Orel Hershiser, who combined for 6 innings of 1-hit relief.

Briggs had 4 hits and scored 4 times while Ray Dandridge and Becker had 3 hits each, with Becker driving in 4. For the House of David, Banks had 3 hits and everybody else had at least one in a balanced onslaught.

BRK 11 (Hildenberger 3-1, 1 B Sv) @ HOD 12 (Downs 2-1, Sutter 16 Sv)
HRs: BRK - Becker (17), Snider (25), Briggs (3); HOD - Hendricks (27), Harris (1), Banks (19).
Box Score

#Indianapolis ABC's @ Homestead Grays, Game 1

Indianapolis' Doc White has wobbled a little since being inserted into the rotation, but here he was brilliant, with a 4-hit shutout through 8 innings. Surprisingly, though, Homestead's pitching was nearly matching them: Bob Friend gave up only a single unearned run through 6 innings--a solo homerun by Joey Votto after a dropped foul ball--and the duo of Dave Giusti and Rick Ownbey--fantastic since their joint recall from AAA--chipped in with 5 innings of 2-hit relief.

Which, for those of you paying attention, means we went into extra innings.

A walk to Josh Gibson in the top of the 9th chased White from the game. Rob Dibble came in, walked Davey Johnson, and gave up a game-tying double to Roberto Clemente to tie the game.

And that's where we stayed until the top of the 12th, when Ownbey gave up a single to Danny Hoffman and a pinch-hit, inside-the-park-homerun to Bob Bescher. Clay Carroll was perfect through 2 1/3, picking up the victory for the ABC's.

Andy Van Slyke went 2-for-5, keeping his average above the .400 mark.

IND 3 (Carroll 2-3; Dibble 4 B Sv) @ HOM 1 (Lindblom 2-5)
HRs: IND - Votto (4), Bescher (13); HOM - none.
Box Score

#Houston Colt 45's @ Detroit Wolverines, Game 3

Detroit's Hal Newhouser and Houston's Bones Ely were both strong. Ely had a 1-hit shutout through 6, but 6 walks drove his pitch count way up, chasing him from the game while Newhouser allowed 2 runs over the same span on RBI singles by Tony Gwynn and Jeff Bagwell before exiting.

2 homeruns in the 8th put Detroit in front: a 3-run shot from Oscar Gamble and a 2-run dinger from Ernie Lombardi. Both came against Houston's Brad Lidge who had, until this outing, looked better in his return to the WBL.

The Colt 45's made it close: with 2 outs, Craig Biggio singled and Bagwell walked, bringing Pete Hill--recently and somewhat controversially installed as the cleanup hitter--to the plate. Hill promptly tripled, making it a 1 run game at 5-4, but John Hiller was able to get Gwynn to ground out weakly to end the game.

HOU 4 (Lidge 1-5, 3 B Sv; McGraw 3 H; Qualls 1 H) @ DET 5 (Bradford 1-0; Hiller 2 Sv; Napier 7 H)
HRs: HOU - none; Gamble (22), Lombardi (3).
Box Score

#Birmingham Black Barons @ Ottawa Mounties, Game 4

Birmingham just keeps rolling. This game is illustrative of their sweep of Ottawa: here, the Mounties' Bob Moose was excellent in his first start for the team, allowing only 1 earned run through 7 innings. Birmingham's Vic Willis was solid, and each team had fielding miscues that contributed to runs, but we ended the 7th with Ottawa leading, 5-3, with Ottawa's Roy Sievers and Birmingham's Jim Pagliaroni going deep.

The Black Barons tied the game in the top of the 8th on a 2 run homerun by Curtis Granderson. And it stayed that way for another 5 innings, until Troy Tulowitzki doubled home 2 runs in the top of the 13th.

Scott Baker, Larry Benton, Steve Bedrosian, and Kent Mercker combined for 7 innings of 2-hit relief and the two staffs combined to whiff 27 batters combined, with Ottawa's Ryan Dempter fanning 5 of the 7 batters he faced.

The Mounties' Larry Parrish had 3 hits in the losing cause.

BBB 7 (Bedrosian 3-1; Mercker 2 Sv) @ OTT 5 (Clancy 5-6; Affeldt 1 B Sv; Dubiel 1 H) [13 Innings]
HRs: BBB - Pagliaroni (1), Granderson (14); OTT - Sievers (6).

Series XXVIII Featured Series: Cleveland Spiders @ Kansas City Monarchs

Series preview here.

#Game 1: Pat Malone @ Bob Gibson

Early on, it didn't look good for either Cleveland's Pat Malone's attempt at his 12th win of the year or for Kansas City's Bob Gibson looking to establish himself in the Monarchs' rotation.

Louis Santop tripled in Jake Stahl and scored on a groundout from Chuck Knoblauch to give the Spiders a lead in the top of the 2nd, but the game would be tight for a while as Lou Brock doubled in Robinson Canó and scored on a sacrifice fly from Frankie Frisch to tie it up.

Cleveland would retake the lead with a leadoff double from Johnny Bates and an RBI single from John Ellis, but again Kansas City would respond as an error in RF by Ron Blomberg allowed Boog Powell to score, and an RBI single from Canó gave the Monarchs their first lead, at 4-3.

Gibson would be chased in the 5th, surrendering 3 doubles and a walk to the first four batters, with Ellis driving in 1 and Stahl 2. Trevor Rosenthal came in and promptly gave away the store: 4 walks and an HBP and by the end of the inning, the Spiders were ahead, 9-4.

Malone had settled down at this point, and with the Monarchs' getting a nice effort from Rube Marquard, the game stayed the same until the top of the 9th, when Marquard's stuff ran out with Sammy Strang driving in 2 and Kenny Lofton 1. That made it 12-4, which was the final tally.

Malone is now tied for the league lead in victories. Ted Simmons had 3 hits for the Monarchs in a losing cause.

CLE 12 (Malone 12-5) @ KCM 4 (Gibson 0-2)
HRs: none.

Game 2: Bill Steen @ Luke Hamlin

A wild pitch by Cleveland's Bill Steen allowed Ted Simmons (who had tripled) to score in the bottom of the 2nd. Steen walked 3 in the inning, but got Boog Powell to ground out, limiting the Monarchs to a single run.

Steen continued to struggle with his control, but made it through 5 innings only surrendering the 1 run.

You never know which Luke Hamlin will show up for Kansas City. This was the good one, as he spun a 2-hit shutout through 5 innings. The Monarchs do know which Louis Santop shows up, though, as the 19 year old continues to make a name for himself. Here, in the bottom of the 6th, his snap throw to first picked off Ozzie Smith, who had walked.

John Ellis led off the 7th with a double, and moved to 3rd on a single from Lance Berkman, chasing Hamlin from the mound. Santop tied the game with a sacrifice fly, but Frank DiPino was able to get out of the inning without further damage.

Cleveland fans love to disparage Sammy Strang, but the 3B has had a decent year, especially in terms of getting on base. Power has been an issue, but here he led off the 8th with his 2nd homerun of the year, putting the Spiders up, 2-1. The lead was short-lived, as consecutive pinch-hits by Steve Evans and Jack Rowe tied it up in the bottom of the 8th. Ron Reed, who was shaky all inning, got Stan Musial to fly out with 2 on, leaving the game tied heading into the 9th.

And it stayed that way, sending us to extra innings.

In the top of the 11th, Berkman chipped a one-out single into RF, and was replaced by Bill Dahlen. Dahlen moved to second on the 2nd out of the inning and scored on a single by Chuck Knoblauch.

The Monarchs tried to duplicate the pattern: Musial opened the inning with a hit, and was replaced by the pinch-running Frankie Frisch. Terry Adams walked Albert Pujols, prompting Cleveland to go to their bullpen for Bob Feller. Feller could not do it: Ducky Medwick, who had 3 hits on the day, drove home a run with a single, and Willie McGee won the game with a sacrifice fly to deep LF.

CLE 3 (Adams 2-6; Feller 1 B Sv) @ KCM 4 (Pfeffer 5-2; DiPino 2 B Sv) [11 Innings]
HRs: CLE - Strang (2); KCM - none.

Game 3: Stan Coveleski @ Adam Wainwright

Adam Wainwright has been struggling of late, and it continued, although he escaped damage until the 3rd, when Ron Blomberg singled in a run. John Ellis drove in a 2nd with a sacrifice fly giving the Spiders an early 2-0 lead. Wainwright settled down until Blomberg took him deep in the top of the 6th, increasing Cleveland's lead to 3-0 and forcing Kansas City to bring in Joe Blong from the pen.

That didn't work so well: Blong gave up a walk and 5 consecutive hits, pushing the lead to 6-0 and bringing in Adam Russell in relief, who gave up a sacrifice fly before bringing the inning to a close.

Stan Coveleski, on the other hand, went to the bottom of the 6th with the 7-0 lead nursing a 4-hit shutout. The shutout lasted into the 7th, when Lou Brock took Coveleski deep.

Each team added a run, but the outcome was never really in doubt. Blomberg ended with 4 hits for Cleveland while Willie McGee and Brock had 3 hits each for Kansas City in the losing cause.

CLE 8 (Coveleski 11-2) @ KCM 4 (Wainwright 1-5)
HRs: CLE - Blomberg (32); KCM - Brock (9).
Box Score

Game 4: Cy Young @ Frank Castillo

Neither Cy Young nor Frank Castillo were very good, with each team scoring in the first frame. Cleveland used doubles from Ron Blomberg and Kenny Lofton and Kansas City RBI singles from Stan Musial and Robinson Canó, and we came out of the first inning with the Spiders leading, 3-2.

But, despite allowing a lot of traffic, only one more run crossed the plate until a 3-run shot by Lance Berkman made it 7-2 in favor of Cleveland in the top of the 7th.

Kansas City made it close with a 2 run single from Albert Pujols and a 2 run jack from Ducky Medwick making it a 1-run game at 7-6, but the Spiders' Terry Adams pitched a perfect 9th for his 25th save giving Cleveland the 3-1 edge in the series.

CLE 7 (Young 9-7; Adams 25 Sv; Porter 11 H) @ KCM 6 (Castillo 6-9)
HRs: CLE - Berkman (8); KCM - Medwick (11).

TWIWBL 35.0: Deadline Day Games

Due to a couple rainouts, there were 2 games played while the teams scrambled to rearrange their rosters.

#New York Gothams @ Philadelphia Stars

This was an interesting one. Tim Belcher, called up just for this start, did well, holding the Gothams to 2 runs in 5 innings, while Don Sutton gave up 5. So it looked good for the Stars until the Gothams exploded for 8 runs in the 8th inning, on their way to a 12-8 victory.

Joe Adcock tied a league record with 3 homeruns for New York, driving in 5. Adcock had 4 hits and Jimmy Sheckard added 3, all doubles. The Gothams had 10 extra-base hits on the day. George Hendrick had 4 hits for Philadelphia in a losing cause, and Willie Davis and Sherm Lollar added 3 each.

NYG 12 (Jones 8-7) @ PHI 8 (Jonnard 0-2, 1 B Sv; Rojas 1 H; Gomes 1 H)
HRs: NYG - Adcock 3 (9); PHI - Rolen (14), Kluszewski (18).
