We had the day off yesterday and moved back into a tie for 1st place! Every team in the Southern Division is 1-1!

The Columbus Explorers are in Jacksonville to play a 4 game series through the weekend. They lost 2 games in Buffalo, both by 1 run and one in extra innings, to start the season. Last year we were 5-3 against them, the only team in the League, other than Orlando, that we had a winning record against. They were 12th in scoring last year with 614 runs and 6th in fewest runs allowed with 645. Their run differential was -31.

Columbus Explorers (0-2 .000 2 GB tied for 6th (last) place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (1-1 .500 0 GA tied for 1st (last) place in the Southern Division)

COL: Terry Wilson (29-R) (10-12 4.38 ERA 197.1 IP, 203 H, 22 HR, 64 BB, 159 SO last year) vs.
JAX: Jim Baucom (20-L) (15-5 2.09 ERA 220 IP, 133 H, 9 HR, 66 BB, 197 SO last year in B Ball) Rookie

Wilson was 1-0 in 2 starts against us last year with a 4.38 ERA. 12.1 IP, 11 H, 0 HR, 4 BB, 11 SO.

Baucom is making his Major League debut today. He was the 1st overall pick in this year's B Leagues Draft.

Game Start: 7:05 PM

Top of the First:
Jim Baucom's first Major League pitch is a called strike! Jorge Moreida swings at the second pitch and grounds out to short! Sandy Jimenez swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to left... He steals 2nd... Gabriel Beltran fouls out to the catcher! Tim Brantley strikes out on 3 pitches!

Bottom of the First:
Leander Gooding swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short. Rob Worms swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses... Cal Doty strikes out looking on 3 pitches...

P Terry Wilson strikes out 5 in the first two innings...

Top of the Fourth:
Sandy Jimenez grounds a hit to left. Gabriel Beltran doubles to left... Tim Brantley pops out to 3rd. Ron Stillwagon draws a walk to load the bases up with 1 out. Lee Roe pops out to 2nd. Marc Barksdale drives one to deep right center, but Rob Worms runs it down!

Bottom of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Glen Lewis lines a hit to left center, our first hit of the game... He steals 2nd. They walk Bart Daw intentionally... P Jim Baucom strikes out... 8 K's for P Terry Wilson... Last year, we stunk at hitting, but we were the toughest team in the League to strike out. None of the fellows we added to the lineup this year, though, are shy about swinging and missing....

Bottom of the Seventh:
With 1 out, Glenn Lewis hits a stand up double to left center! Bart Daw grounds a hit to left and Lewis beats the throw home! 1 to 0, Jays! Daw tries to steal, but they have a pitchout on and he is out...

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Jim Rutherford (32-R), their closer, who they got in a trade with New Orleans this winter. He led the League in Games Pitched last year with 87 and was 8-8 with 28 SV and a 3.72 ERA in 113.2 IP. With 1 out, Rob Worms lines a hit to left center. He tries to steal and for the third time today, they have caught us with a pitchout... Cal Doty then takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... Marty Eades grounds a double over the 3rd base bag and Doty scores from 1st! 2 to 0, Jays!

Top of the Ninth:
P Jim Baucom is at 94 pitches. 5-6-7 up for them. The Bullpen is primed and ready to step in. Ron Stillwagon flies out to deep center! Lee Roe flies out to right! Marc Barksdale grounds a hit up the middle... PH Robert Duenas (32-L), who is 2 for 2 on the season with a double, grounds out to short and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 2 to 0!

A shutout in his Major League debut for Jim Baucom!

We are still in 1st place!

We had 5 whole hits and made no errors
Columbus had 8 hits and made 2 errors

Jim Baucom (W 1-0), in his Major League debut, pitched 9 shutout innings, allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and struck out 5. 109 pitches.

Terry Wilson (L 0-1) went 7 innings, gave us 1 run, 3 hits, 3 walks and struck out 9.

RF Rob Worms had a hit and a walk and stole a base. 3B Marty Eades hit a double, drew a walk (INT) and had an RBI. LF Glen Lewis had 2 hits with a double, stole a base and scored a run. SS Bart Daw had a hit and a walk (INT) and an RBI.

Around the League: After 3 games, there are no undefeated teams left in the League. Only Columbus is winless.

Down on the Farm:
The Daytona (A) Tortugas opened their season today with a 3 to 2 win at home versus Tampa. Ernesto Noyola (22-R), our 4th round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft, who was pummeled in Spring Training, went 8 innings, allowed 2 unearned runs, 6 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6. Bob Craig (24-R) got the Save with a perfect 9th with 1 strikeout. The Tortugas should be much better this season than last year when they went 47-97 (.326), since 6 of their 8 starting players were with the Jays most of the season last year.

Frank Cook (36-R) of Pawtucket pitched a shutout on Opening Day. He allowed 9 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5. At bat, he had a hit. The PawSox won, 3 to 0, at home versus Utica.

We were informed by the League office that RF Rob Worms (29-R) would not be suspended for his actions in yesterday's game!

Columbus Explorers (0-4 .000 3 GB in 8th (last) place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (3-1 .750 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division)

COL: Terry Luckett (27-L) (0-0 2.57 ERA 7 IP, 5 H, 2 HR, 0 BB, 3 SO) All-Star vs.
JAX: Mike Gaddis (33-R) (0-0 7.20 ERA 5 IP, 8 H, 2 HR, 1 BB, 6 SO)

Luckett is their #1 starter. He was 16-7 with a 2.42 ERA last year, leading the League in Winning %, SO and fewest BB/9 and, of course, BB/K ratio. He was 0-2 against the Jays, though, with a 7.84 ERA in 2 starts. 10.1 IP, 17 H, 1 HR, 2 BB, 9 SO.

I was tempted to start rookie Danny Coreano to see if we could get 3 straight shutouts from 3 rookies in their Major League debuts, but decided against it, so that he would not have to be up against such a tough pitcher as his opposition.

Columbus Explorers (1-4 .200 2 GB tied for 7th (last) place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (3-2 .600 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the Southern Division)

COL: Mike Elizondo (27-L) (0-1 7.71 ERA 2.1 IP, 4 H, 1 HR, 3 BB, 3 SO) vs.
JAX: Manny Martinez (30-R) (0-1 7.20 ERA 5 IP, 6 H, 2 HR, 1 BB, 0 SO)

Elizondo was 11-15 with a 3.36 ERA and 235.2 IP last year. We faced him once and beat him, scoring 5 runs on 9 hits and no walks with 3 strikeouts in 6.2 innings. He is suffering from a strained abdominal muscle.

We are hoping Martinez just needs some time to work himself back into shape after a year of inactivity and only 1 start in Spring Training to get himself going, but we are not confident that he is not washed up.

With 1 out, Leander Gooding triples to right center! With the infield in, Rob Worms grounds one past the 3rd baseman for a hit and Gooding scores! Tie Game: 3 to 3. Worms steals 2nd! He tries to steal 3rd on the next pitch, but gets thrown out... Cal Doty pops a little hit to center that would have scored Worms easily from 2nd... Marty Eades lines a hit to right and Doty beats the throw to 3rd! Garrett Bender grounds out to short...

Top of the Ninth:

On the Hill: Bill Grant (31-L), after a perfect 8th. Dave Behm pops out to 2nd. C Doug Peacock (32-S), 2 for 5 with a triple, a run and an RBI this series, strikes out. Wes Fitzgibbons strikes out!

Bottom of the Ninth:

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:

New Pitcher: Jim Kenzy (34-R). 2-3-4 up for them. PH Wilson Partida (25-R), a rookie, who is 0 for 2 this series, hits a home run to right... 4 to 3, Otters. With 2 outs, George Johnson takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Tom Spiess swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses. P Kenzy goes to see Trudy when he gets back to the dugout....

Bottom of the Tenth:
Marty Eades swings at a 2-2 pitch and just gets a piece of it and bloops a hit over the 2nd baseman. Pinch-runner: Charlie Faber (31-R). Garrett Bender grounds a hit to center and Faber just beats the throw to 3rd! 1B Ed Diskin (37-R) grounds out to 3rd and Faber holds and Bender goes to 2nd. Glen Lewis swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses... They make a pitching change. New Pitcher: Dave Hedrick (28-L), who pitched 1.2 scoreless innings on Tuesday. Bart Daw grounds out to short...

Lost - 4 to 3

5 straight losses, the last 4 by 1 run...

We had 14 hits and made 2 errors
Ottawa had 6 hits and made 1 error

14 to 6! And we lose!

Dale Gilchrist went 4.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP. At bat, he had a hit.
RHP Justin Reddick (BS 1) went 2.2 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3. Editor's Note: This is poor scoring by OOTP. He should not have been given a Blown Save.
LHP Bill Grant pitched 2 perfect innings and struck out 3.
RHP Jim Kenzy (L 0-1) went 1 inning, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, a home run, 1 walk and struck out 2.

Bill Cortright went 7 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 11 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3.
LHP Danny Pineda (W 1-0) went 2.2 scoreless innings, gave us 3 hits and struck out 3.
LHP Dave Hedrick (SV 1) faced 1 batter and retired him.

2B Leander Gooding hit a triple and scored a run. RF Rob Worms went 3 for 3 with a double and 2 walks, stole 3 bases, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Cal Doty had a hit and a walk and scored a run. 3B Marty Eades had 3 hits and an RBI. C Garrett Bender had 4 hits with a double and an RBI.

Trudy's report on Dale Gilchrist is a strained hamstring that will hamper his running, but not his pitching, she says. It will take about 3 weeks to heal, she thinks. Jim Kenzy has a herniated disc in his back and he will not be able to pitch for 5 or 6 days....

The Charlotte Hornets are here to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 3 of 4 at home versus Buffalo. We were 7-7 against them last year. They are 12th in scoring so far with 3.50 runs per game (Jacksonville is tied for last with 2.60). They are tied for 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.50 per game (Jacksonville is tied for 2nd with 3.00!). Their run differential is -10 and ours is -4.

Charlotte Hornets (5-5 .500 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (4-6 .400 2 GB tied for 5th place in the Southern Division)

After not striking anyone out and looking like he was washed up in his first start, Martinez came back and had a very good 2nd outing, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk with 7 strikeouts in 8 innings.

RP Barry Short (34-R) was sent to Daytona (A) and RP Robbie Hopley (28-R) was called up. We got him in a trade with Syracuse in the wee hours of Opening Day. I dunno why he was not on the Opening Day roster; I guess I fell asleep and forgot... He was 4-1 with a 2.72 ERA in 49.2 IP with only 33 H and 0 HR for the Sycamores last year and had a great Spring for them this year: 10.2 IP, 1 H, 0 HR, 3 BB, 14 SO. His control is shaky, though, with 28 walks last year.

Charlotte Hornets (6-5 .545 1 GB tied for 2nd place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (4-7 .364 3 GB tied for 5th place in the Southern Division)

CHAR: Ron Simon (29-R) (0-2 1.50 ERA 12 IP, 10 H, 0 HR, 3 BB, 13 SO) vs.

Simon was 10-13 with a 3.76 ERA in 208 IP last year. He was 0-1 in 3 starts against us with a 3.93 ERA. 18.1 IP, 23 H, 0 HR, 6 BB, 10 SO.

This will be the 2nd Major League start for Coreano.

Lost - 2 to 1

We had 4 whole hits and made no errors
Charlotte had 8 hits and made no errors

We turned 4 double plays.

I am just flummoxed by how bad this offense is... I thought we had improved it a little over last year. All of the new guys are hitting decently, but we are scoring almost a run and a half less per game than we did last year. And we weren't any good last year!

We scored 6 runs on Opening Day. Since then, we have scored 22 runs in 11 games and no more than 3 in any....
We have 12 totals hits in our last 3 games...

Danny Coreano (L 0-1) went 8 innings, allowed 2 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2.
LHP Bill Grant went 1 scoreless inning, allowed 1 hit and 1 walk.

Ron Simon (W 1-2) went 8 innings, gave us 1 runs, 3 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2. At bat, he had 2 hits.
RHP Larry Durbin (SV 2) pitched a scoreless 9th and gave us 1 hit.

CF Cal Doty hit a double. 3B Marty Eades hit his first home run of the season and the 2nd for the team. LF Glen Lewis had 2 hits and stole a base.

It is time to hit the road for the first time this season and we are in Memphis, the scene of many horrors last season, for a short 2 game set. They just won 2 of 3 here against New Orleans over the weekend. We were 4-10 against them on the season last year. We won the first series we played with them, 2 games to 1 and split the final 4 game series. In between, though, they beat us 7 times by an aggregate score of 78 to 28. Their run differential is +19, 3rd best in the League, and ours is -15, 3rd worst.

Today is Ed Diskin's 38th birthday!

Jacksonville Jays (5-8 .385 3.5 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division) at
Memphis Mules (7-7 .500 2 GB in 4th place in the Southern Division)

Gilchrist gave up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts in 4.1 innings in a no decision last time out. He left the game with an injury, a strained hamstring, that is still bothering him. He says it does not affect his pitching, only his running.

P Dale Gilchrist (23-R) was put on the DL. They said his injury would not affect his pitching, but he did not get anyone out, so I don't believe them. We recalled P Marco Gonzalez (27-R), who was 4-18 with a 5.40 ERA for us last year. We was 1-0 in 3 starts for Daytona (A) this season, with a 3.27 ERA and only 3 BB and 18 SO in 22 IP.

We are in Orlando to play our in state rivals a 4 game series through the weekend. They just won a pair of games here versus Louisville and have won 6 in a row. We were 9-5 against them last year, our best record against any team. The Juice lead the League in scoring with 5.80 runs per game (Jacksonville is up to #14 with 3.00). Their team OPS is .813, the best in the League, and ours is .624, the worst. They are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.47 per game (Jacksonville is #4 with 3.79). Their run differential is +20, 3rd best in the League, and ours is -11, up to 12th best!

Jacksonville Jays (5-9 .357 4.5 GB in 5th place in the Southern Division) at
Orlando Juice (10-5 .667 0 GA tied for 1st place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Manny Martinez (30-R) (0-2 7.56 ERA 16.2 IP, 20 H, 4 HR, 4 BB, 8 SO) vs.
ORL: Larry Hemmerling (26-R) (2-0 1.74 ERA 20.2 IP, 13 H, 2 HR, 5 BB, 13 SO) Silver Slugger

Martinez gave up 8 runs on 8 hits, 2 home runs and 2 walks with 1 strikeout1 in 3.2 innings in a loss last time out.

Hemmerling was 6-11 with a 3.76 ERA in 203.2 IP last year. We only faced him once last year and we beat him, scoring 6 runs on 5 hits and a home run and 1 strikeout and he only got 2 batters out.

Top of the Ninth:

Cal Doty, who up to this point is 0 for 15 off P Antonio Perez, hits a home run to right! 6 to 2, Juice.

Lost - 6 to 2

I KNOW we are a lot better team this year than we were last year, but it is not showing up in the win-loss columns, yet....

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Orlando had 9 hits and made no errors

Jim Baucom (L 2-1) went 7 innings, allowed 4 runs (3 earned), 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5.
RHP Justin Reddick went 1 inning, allowed 2 runs, 3 hits and 1 walk.

Antonio Perez (W 3-1) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 2 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 4. 113 pitches. 1st CG against us this year in our 17th game. After 17 games last year, we had 6 against us and we were shut out 3 times. We have yet to be shut out this season, though runs have still been mostly hard to come by.

2B Leander Gooding had a hit and a walk and an RBI. CF Cal Doty hit his 1st home run of the season. 3B Marty Eades had 2 hits with a double. C Garrett Bender had 2 hits. PH Ismael Gonzales hit a double, but thought it was a triple...

For Orlando, 2B Tom Howard had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had 2 RBI.

Trudy's report on Ron Worms is a sprained elbow that should bother him for a week or two, but should not hamper his hitting. Marty Eades had a sports hernia and she expects him to miss six weeks.... That is a BIG blow to our offense.... No more .963 OPS in the cleanup spot...

Please check whether the ballpark lies in a current warzone of former minefield, because they're dropping at an unnatural pace.
