TARPONS ACQUIRE BURSEY IN BLOCKBUSTER WITH COWBOYS
A blockbuster in every sense of the word was announced at the 11th hour on the trading deadline. Florida has sent top pitching prospect Kinnon Mendelson, top IF prospect Juan Guerra, knuckleballer Robbie Givens, CF Serge Baud and 25-year-old top C prospect Vince Rydell, AND their 2nd and 4th round pick to the Texas Cowboys for a package of players.
The centerpiece is star Centerfielder Leith Bursey. The 23-year-old is considered by many to be a close 2nd in talent to Sergio Robles as the games best CF. He is hitting .332-9-55 as of today. Also coming to Florida is top OF prospect Chris Linn, OF Jake Inks and 24 year old IF Arturo Oquendo.
Bursey is making league minimum and arbitration eligible this winter.

GM'S OFFICE
Flying in the face of everything I've ever done in the past. This deal was about acquiring a 23-year-old hall of fame caliber CF who can rake, and win gold gloves. He's both in our scout's eyes. He is honestly one of the 2-3 best outfielders in the game, regardless of position, defensively. His bat is middle of the order vs RHP (Oh ya, he's a switch hitter who gives a little vs LHP but not a troublesome amount) and a gold glove defender. He was the games 26th rated prospect heading into 2008. He broke his finger in May and is just back off the DL.
Linn is the younger brother of Joe Linn, the pitcher we selected 1st overall. He was the San Diego Missions 1st rounder (13th overall) in 2008 out of UCLA. He's a RHH left fielder who can play CF as well/ He's heading to A ball for the remainder of this year. His upside is a 40+ homer bat and a .380+ OBP approach loaded with baseball IQ.
Jake Inks was Texas' 3rd rounder in 2008 out of Duke (78th overall). Our guys are far higher on him than the league. A great year would be 5 HR's but he is going to hit and hit a lot. He's a possible extra/utility guy with 70 steal speed and smarts. He's going to finish this year in Farmington.
Oquendo is a versatile ++ defender all around the IF who we think can hit enough to be a 5th infielder with exceptional tools.

Now to justify what I gave up.The league ratings dropped us from 4th to 13th after this deal. I can't “justify” giving up Mendelson only to say there is no deal if he's not included. I just traded for a 23-year-old franchise cornerstone and that comes with a price. I have a lot of minor league pitching but I'd be lying if I said anyone with his potential right now.
Guerra was, is, one of the games top young IF prospects. He's a 3B and that means Daig, Hallamore, and Mendoza are in line in front of him.
Givens needs a new home. He's an 'old' prospect now and they wanted him.
Baud was a natural to cover the contract incoming as well as to provide Texas with a natural CF to take over. The two picks will hurt, but again there's always a price to pay for star talent. I have stacked this organization with catching prospects as well as the singing of Funicello this winter. I knew they wanted a C prospect as they are desperately thin in the minors at this spot. So before he even asked I took a look at my assets and went with moving the oldest, in Rydell. He's having a fantastic season but his bat is far ahead of his glove and game calling.
The other significant factor in this deal are these two numbers. .687 and 8th. Our current defensive efficiency and our league ranking.
  • 7/31: FLA 4 STL 1 Bursey homers in his 1st AB 1-4 Alatorre PotG W (9-4 3.22) Galindo SV (33)
  • 8/1: STL 6 FLA 0 Engel PotG W (10-10 4.31) 8.2 IP 4 H 1 BB 4 K Willoughby ND 6 IP 6 H 1 R 3 BB 5 K

  • AL POTW – Luis Romero (MIN) 7-15 4 HR 13 RBI (.254-10-49)
  • NL POTW – Juan Burruel (WAS) 15-29 3 HR 8 RBI (.326-19-70)

Joe Vertz is making a serious bid at the triple crown. I'd argue he's got HR's locked up and barring a nightmare week probably RBI's too? Batting Average always seems to be the one that will fluctuate more than the first two over the final months.
The Vegas two-headed monster of Noh and Sato could possibly end up 1-2 in all three triple crown categories. Detroit has been hot and shaved the lead to 3.5. Vegas, San Antonio are both locks while Chicago and Ohio, Pittsburgh and Washington and possibly even San Diego and LA could end up good races. The Missions have been insanely good since an early struggle.

So let's just get this over with. Joey Vertz is your 2009 AL MVP.
I don't think there are any races left in the AL, none. The NL East appears to be the only real race in the ABA this year.
Astute readers will recognize the guy 3rd in the AL in saves.
San Antonio is 54-29 since June 1st.

Week 24 recap

Name: 2009 8 Standings leaders 9 games left.jpg
Views: 141
Size: 471.5 KB

9 games to go and most of the picture is crystal clear.
Joe Vertz will very likely take home a triple crown barring a huge slump or some massive hot streak. Juan Flores will need to get busy if he wants the single season SB record of 90.
Detroit, Chicago, Las Vegas Ohio and we appear to be the 5 teams getting to play some October ball in the AL.
In the NL Pittsburgh, Washington, San Antonio, and KC appear to be the NL locks and lookie lookie. Pre-season favorite San Diego, who tanked the first 1/3rd of the year are within 2. LA slumping at the worst possible time. I thought the Missions were red hot but it turns out they weren't. Just 42-34 since July 1st they've watched the storm go 32-44 over that same stretch to pick up 10 games.

SCHEDULE:
3 @ Chicago
3 vs Minnesota
OFF DAY

RESULTS:
  • 9/21: CHI 9 FLA 5 Alatorre L (12-8 3.66) 4.2 IP 6 H 7 ER 3 BB 5 K Christman 2-4 3B (1) HR (13) 2 RBI (33) Flores SB (81) Hallamore SB (54)
  • Former Tarpon Leith Southorn won his 18th game today by shutting out New York 10-0 on a 3-hitter., he punched out 10 and walked just 1. He's 18-10 4.67. Leith was part of a huge trade with San Francisco in which we acquired Jon Naclerio and Harland Bolduc as well as their #1. He was dealt 2 years later to the Phantom for SP Ethan Collins.
  • Joel Aris (WAS) won his 19th game striking out 6 in a 9-0 win over Austin. He's 19-6 3.53
  • Denver axed manager Marc Roubik. Roubik had been with the Saints since 1996 and managed them since 1997. He has been part of 3 world championships, 2 as bench coach in Jacksonville and he took the Saints all the way in 2004 winning manager of the year. The Saints are dead last in the AL West at 63-91 which is on pace to be the worst season in franchise history. No replacement has been named. Bench Coach Tim Graff will manage in the interim.
  • We face perennial Koufax winner RJ Stanton tomorrow.
  • San Diego has closed to within just a single game of LA in the NL West.
  • 9/22: CHI 2 FLA 0 Stanton POTG CG SHO (16-5 3.18) 3 H 2 BB 8 K Shelley walk-off 2R HR off Grab
  • Willoughby ND 8 IP 5 H 1 BB 6 K
  • That makes 2 starts, 18 innings 7 hits and 0 runs vs Stanton this year. Here's hoping we don't see them after September.
  • Federico Escobedo (PIT) scattered 4 hits en route to a 2-0 win over Oklahoma. He's 9-9 4.62
  • Chicago clinches the central with the win and Ohio clinches the 2nd wild-card spot. They will meet Detroit in the play in game.
  • 9/23: FLA 8 CHI 3 6 run 9th. Pollock ND 7 IP 6 H 3 ER 1 BB 4 K Adams PH 3 R 2B (13) Hayashi 3-4 HR (15) 2 RBI (56)
  • Denver has hired ABA legend Kevin Allison to take over the club as their next manager. Allison is just 41 years old. This is his 1st managing job at any level but word is he's going to be an outstanding one. He took home the 1992 MVP after hitting .314-37-122. He retired with 454 career home runs and 1385 RBI's with a career slash line of .280/.423/.511 in 2334 games. He is the all-time leader in runs scored with 1692, 2nd all time to Domenic Loetzsch in OBP, 7th all-time in hits, 6th in total bases (4309) 9th in 1B (1358) 2nd in 2B (503, retired 3 shy of the leader Andy Greene) 19th in home runs 7th in RBI's, 3rd in walks (1603) and 2nd all-time in WAR at 82.9, one of just two players with 80+ Career WAR (Mike Trout the all-time leader at 94.9). He retired in 2005 and will be eligible for the HOF ballot next year. He won 4 silver sluggers in LF, 4 postseason series MVP awards, he was an 8 time all star and 2-time world champion (1994 with Jacksonville and 1999 with LA) where he won the MVP in both world series.

I like the way you set up the screenshot. Makes it easier to compare the top performers by league when it is side-by-side. Dig it,

Week 25 recap

SCHEDULE:
3 @ Brooklyn
END OF THE REGULAR SEASON

Two races left. The NL East where the Jets trail Pittsburgh by 1.5 games and the NL West where San Diego has overtaken LA by 1 game. The East race is to decide winner/wild card, the west loser goes home. Washington takes on Buffalo in the seasons final 4 games with a DH starting tonight.
Also in the race for his Triple Crown Joe Vertz has seen his lead in the batting race shrink to .002. He leads Milwaukee's Sam Deaton .341 to .339. He also leads Chad Mohr 128 to 123 in the RBI race.
Over in the NL Dave Manzer .337, Jarod Bodkin .336 and TJ Rand .334 will go at it over the seasons final 3 games.

RESULTS:
  • 9/28: BRK 10 FLA 5 Cummings POTG 3-3 HR (12) 3 RBI (48) Grab L (6-5 2.25)
  • San Diego lost to Texas while the Storm won so they are tied for the NL West lead. Pittsburgh won and Washington swept their DH so the Jets are 1 behind with 2 to play.
  • Joe Vertz went 1-4 and Sam Deaton took a 0'fer so Vertz leads .341-.337. However, Chad Mohr hit a grand slam to close the RBI race to 129 to 127.
  • We are only allowing our starters to play through 5 innings in the last couple days to keep them fresh and avoid any injury situations. The final game we will start almost an entire lineup of backups.
  • 9/29: BRK 5 FLA 1 Sakai POTG W (13-19 4.83) 8 IP 3 H 1 ER 6 BB 5 K
  • Willoughby L (14-8 2.97) 5 IP 6 H 2 ER 3 BB 3 K
  • Joey Vertz pretty much locked up the Triple Crown as he went 3-4 (.344) 2B (26) HR (51) and drove in 3 (132).
  • Pittsburgh lost 12-5 to San Francisco and Washington beat Buffalo 5-1 to make the NL East a tie. Loser has to play in the WC game.
  • Texas beat San Diego 3-1 and LA was beaten by Austin 6-4 so the division is tied heading into the final day. LA has Dwain Milazzo starting.
  • 9/30: FLA 6 BRK 2 “Johnny Allstaff” pitched this game. 7 arms got an inning or two of work. Grab W (7-5) Weller POTG 4-5 2B (1) HR (1) 2 RBI (2) Makowski 3-4 2B (9) HR (2) RBI (9)
  • The Miners and Jets will have a 1 game playoff to determine the NL East winner as both won yesterday. San Diego won, LA lost so the Missions win the West and LA goes home.
  • Joey Vertz took home the AL Triple Crown with a .343-51-132 season and former Tarpon TJ Rand won the NL Batting title at .340 to top Jarod Bodkin's .337.

RECORD: 1-2 (101-61)

Former Tarpon TJ Rand wins the NL Batting Title. Sam Ginn, former Tarpon, had a fantastic year closing for Ohio, the one team I'd prefer NOT to face in the playoffs.

The LA collapse was truly one for the ages. They were 47-30 on July 1st and went 34-51 the rest of the way capped off by a franchise record worst 7-20 September.
San Diego was 35-42 on the 1st of July and would go 47-38 the rest of the way. Not bad but certainly not some dominant 2nd half. They came from 12 games back with leagues 11th ranked offense and 6th ranked pitching staff. Truly a team effort.

I'd like to think there's some suspense to some awards but it appears Vertz and Leith McNayr are runaway MVP's with seasons of 8.2 and 8.3 WAR.

Wild card games

Ohio (Rose 12-12 3.81) @ Detroit (Barlow 10-4 3.65)
  • Ohio used a Layne Cosman RBI 2B in the 1st and then a Steve Stahl 3 run HR in the 2nd to open a 5-0 lead. Detroit never got close as the Generals tacked on 4 more to beat the Phantom 9-3. They'll head to Miami for the 1st game of the Division series.

Kansas City (Girard 14-9 3.67) @ Pittsburgh (Escobedo 9-9 4.59)
  • KC broke open a scoreless game with 4 run 4th inning. The miners battled back with Mike Mayo 2 R HR and then his RBI single in the 6th made it 4-3. They tied it 4-4 on a Spartan error in the 6th.
  • It remained that way until the 9th when Rodolfo Ramirez lined a 2 out 2 strike RBI single off Miner reliever Al Albuquerque. In the bottom half the Miners put runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out, then loaded the bases with 2 outs only to fall short as Maddox Sweetland struck out on a full count fastball to end the game, and their year. KC heads to San Antonio for the Division series.

Division series game one

The Generals were 89-73 this year. They were also a playoff-worst 19-27 versus LHP. Kody Pollock will start game 1 with lefty Juan Alatorre getting game 3. Willoughby will start 2 and Samvdio will start game 4 barring some insanity.
They will counter with Ace Bobby Rone. We were 101-61, 80-45 vs RHP and 21-16 vs LHP.

Las Vegas – Sato (19-8 2.45) @ Chicago – Stanton (16-5 3.18) Two titans toeing the rubber game 1
Stanton outpitched Sato and Chicago's 3 run 1st was enough.
  • Chicago 5 Las Vegas 2
  • W-Stanton (1-0) L-Sato (0-1) S-Knightner (1)
  • HR CHI-Mitchell (1)
  • Chicago up 1-0

San Diego-Carmona (8-8 4.05) @ Washington-Almagauer (17-8 2.73)
The game was tied 2-2 at the end of 9. Mission Catcher Matt McKinney drilled a solo homer in the top of the 12th to give San Diego the 3-2 lead. With 2 outs in the bottom half, Rob Anderson drew a walk to load the bases and Kevon Cephus followed with a line drive single to center to tied the game. Juan Valle popped up to end the inning.
With one out in the 13th Luis Rojas lined the 1st pitch he saw to left for a solo HR and a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom half of the 13th Chris Barrick got the first two outs on 5 pitches before a Wing-fung Huie dropped a ball into shallow right for a 1B. Steve Campagna, who was already 3-4, laced a double into the gap in left center. Huie would be waived in but a perfect relay home nailed him at the plate to end the game!
  • W-Barrick (1-0) L-Webb (0-1)
  • HR SD-Rojas (1) Owen (1) McKinney (1)
  • San Diego leads series 1-0

Kansas City- Gourley (1-4 5.13) @ San Antonio-Hanning (19-6 3.23)
The Broncos took a 4-3 lead into the 9th before Spartan Catcher Rodolfo Ramirez hit a leadoff HR to tie it. Bronco DH Chris Beard drilled a 2 out RBI single in the bottom half of the 9th to give the Broncos a 1-0 series lead.
  • San Antonio 5 Kansas City 4
  • W-Holton (1-0) L-Mulato (0-1)
  • HR KC-Ramirez (1) Saucedo (1) SAN-Dares (1)
  • San Antonio leads 1-0

When I used to read Orcins dynasty I would get to the postseason and set it up so I couldn't see the entire post, but would read it line by line to create some suspense and it made it a ton of fun. To that end, I have created a summary sort of in that manner so if you want to you can read about the game before knowing how it ends.

Ohio – Rone (19-9 3.98) @ Florida – Pollock (16-5 3.10)
Ohio sent 8 men to the plate in a 4 run second inning. Pollock would get into the 7th before tiring and leave the game down 5-2. At 5-3 entering the 9th Arturo Mendoza led off with a single. He was 3-4 on the day. Cummings would come in to pinch run and Juan Renovato would battle through a 12 pitch AB and line a single to left on a 3-2 count.
Harland Daig, with the count 0-2 slapped a ground ball to the right side that squeaked through to load the bases with no one out.
Juan Flores hit a grounder to the right side, Cummings scored and Daig was forced out at 2B. 5-4 1 out.
Funicello would hit a grounder to a drawn-in infield, and be forced at first.
Cortezo was intentionally walked to load the bases and DJ Adams would come in to PH for Makata Hayashi.
On a 1-1 pitch he hit a grounder in the hole to left, Renovato scored and Flores ran through a stop sign and with the game 5-5 and two outs Flores was thrown out at the plate to put the game into extras.
The 9th inning rally all happened vs former Tarpon closer Sam Ginn.
Ernesto Galindo took over in the 8th with 1 out and managed to dodge a litany of bullets almost every inning as he went 3.2 giving up 3 hits, 2 walks and 2 K's but no runs.
Jake Grab worked 2 hitless innings.
In the bottom of the 14th, General Reliever Jon Harris was working into his 5th inning. A 2 out infield single by Hallamore brought up Leith Bursey. On a 0-2 count, he would take a fastball to the bleachers in dead center for a 2 run walk off home run!
Soon to be AL MVP Joey Vertz was 0-6 with a walk and 3 K's. Sergio Robles was 3-7 2B (1) 2 CS
Bursey took POTG honors going 4-7 2B (1) HR (1) 2 R 2 RBI (2) Jose Flores was 4-7 2B (1) HR (1) and 2 RBI (2)
  • Florida 7 Ohio 5
  • W-Grab (1-0) L-Harris (0-1)
  • HR- OH-Schroeder (1) FLA-Flores (1) Bursey (1)
  • Florida leads series 1-0
