The last 25 games the Expos offense improve marginally, but not enough to allow one of the best pitching teams to win. No question a lack of power hurt the Expos. There were 2 teams in the NL (Cubs and Astros) that had over double of the Expos totals in HR's. The top HR hitting team in the MLB was the Twins and they hit 126 dingers. Pitching wise, the Expos and the Dodgers led the NL with 8 complete games and the Expos led the NL with 10 shutouts.

Montreal Starters AGE W-L ERA GS IP K WHIP K/9
Taft, Jamari 28 9-6 3.46 22 140 128 1.31 8.2
Hernanez, Eddie 23 11-6 3.01 20 128 90 1.10 6.3
Marks, Eric 28 6-8 3.29 20 120 88 1.39 6.6

Clemmet, Luke 25 1-2 6.33 4 21 18 1.59 7.6

Eddie Hernanez had a great first full season for the Expos. At 23 years of age he is expected to become the ace of the Expos rotation. He is 14-9 with a 2.61 ERA in 28 career MLB starts. Eric Marks did not have a great season, he averaged almost a full inning less per start this season. He will need to get his walks down (4.1 BB/9) next season. Jamari Taft probably had his best season as an MLB'er. He dropped his HR/9 and BB/9 this season. He was one win away from tieing his career best of 10. Javier Trevino had his worst season as a pro, he had a below 3.00 ERA career average and blew up to 4.31 this year. The issue is that he gave up 12 HR's (1.1 HR/9) compared to just 4 (0.2 HR/9) last year when he pitched 60 more innings. Another rookie that the Expos hope can give the Expos the top rotation next season is Carlos Vera. He allowed just 2 HRs in 33 IP's and struck out hitters at a rate of 7.6 K/9. He also had 4 quality starts in 5 starts.

Montreal Relievers AGE W-L ERA Save IP K WHIP K/9
Jones, Robbie 31 2-2 2.28 1 43 56 1.02 11.6

Lopez, Danny 27 0-0 0.00 0 6 3 0.75 4.0

LHP Jesse Deck had a ERA of about 1 full run higher then his career average 3.70 ERA. The key issue was that opponents hit at a .321 BA. Over his career Deck held hitters to a .255 average. RHP Mark Holmgren started the season as the closer, an injury resulted in him getting more of a set up role. Overall he was quite effective in his 2nd season in the MLB. LHP Robbie Jones stats wise had a great season. His ERA was better then his career average 2.89, he appeared in a career high 43.1 innings, he was better then his career average Whip of 1.18. RHP Frank Lynn pitched in AAA this year for a while and thus did not get the innings he had in the past. In the end he was basically at career averages for ERA (4.40) and whip (1.48) this year. LHP Dave Marland got called up this year and pitched 21 effective innings. His 0.84 Whip and opponents batting just .119 against him should give him a chance to be a full time reliever next season. RHP Chris Muckenfuss spent the whole season in Expos blue, although he got tagged with 4 losses, he had only 1 blown save situation. CL Aiden Beasley took the role after Mark Holmgren got hurt, he saves 20 of 21 opportunities this year. In his second full year as an Expos, he went from a 1.17 Whip in 1975 to 0.67 this year.

Veteran Nate Samms production dropped off significantly this year, Is previous 3 seasons he hit 16, 12 and 15 HRs compared to just 1 this year. What will 1977 bring? He is signed for 2 more seasons and a team option for the 3rd. Ricky Shvartsman has played parts of the last 3 seasons with Montreal, is he ready to take a bigger role with the Expos if Samms production continues to diminish.

Expos 1B Darren Maher got better as the year went on. April he hit .186, May .259, June .267 and July .258 and he finished up hot in the as he was hitting .198 up until July 7th. Expos are expecting Gilberto Luna to take over the 3B duties. He may not be a huge upgrade to Watkins offensively, but the 52nd ranked MLB prospect in 1974 can run be used at 2B and SS defensively. 3B Gene Watkins is going to be a free agent at the end of the season. The 30 year olds production has dropped 3 straight seasons. SS Tony Delgado played in his 2nd full season with Montreal, but both seasons were hampered by injury. Offensively he was better this year, but defensively he won a Gold Glove at SS last year. 2B David Sanchez had his best season and now has 178 MLB games under his belt. He led the NL with 9 triples this year.

Montreal Outfielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB

De La Torre, David 30 9 27 0 4 .259 .793 0

The OF should have a fresh new look at the start of the season in 1977. Trade acquisition RF David De La Torre was limited to 6 games with the Expos but he did play in 68 games with Montreal and Cleveland combined and had 7 HRs and 32 RBI's. He did hit 14 HRs in 1975 with Cleveland and the Expos could use that in 1977. LF Mat Garnett hit .270 with 8 HRs and 35 RBIs combined with Montreal and Toronto this year. Don't expect double digit HRs but he did have 28 extra base hits this year in what was his best year in the MLB. The Expos brought back LF Joe Woodbury this year and he was slightly better than the 1975 version of Woodbury, but with the changes to the OF this season, I would not expect to see Woodbury resigned for 1977. CF Bobby King can play just about everywhere, this year he started at 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, CF and RF. The scouts say he can play short if in a pinch as well. King will not be the guy to expect offense from though. CF Danny Plantz will likely be the only starter in the Expos OF, that was a starter on opening day. Plantz led the NL with 45 SB's and had career highs of 7 HRs and 30 RBI's.

The Expos 1st pick, 17th overall wasRHP Alan Feinberg. The 23 year old is still with the Exposorganization and is currently assigned to AAA Seattle. Drafted as astarter, he has started 87 games in the minors. He has seen the AAAfields for the past 3 years, all as a reliever where he has a 4-1record with 5 saves, a 6.10 ERA in 38 IP's. Our scout feels he willeventually become a reliever in the Majors.

Expos 2nd pick, 58th overall was C JohnWinkler. The 25 year old is currently with the Red Sox organizationand has played in 3 games with Boston. Montreal released him in April1973 and he was later released by the Phillies in April 1974. Heappeared in one game for the Red Sox during the World Series andqualified for a World Series ring this past season.

Expos 3rd pick, 82nd overall was CJaden Richard. The 26 year old is currently with the Expos A team inHickory. The Expos scout feels that we are looking a career minorleaguer here. Since 1971 he has played in 314 minor league games, thehighest level he played was AA. He is hitting .235 with 25 HR's and140 RBI's.

Montreal picked in the 4th round, 104thoverall LF Carlos Martinez. The 23 year old is currently in A ballwith the Cardinals organization. Montreal released Martinez in July1972. Martinez has not had a great minor league career playing only29 games, all in A ball. In those games he has hit .190 with 1 HR'sand 5 RBI's.

With their 5th pick, 128th overallMontreal selected 1B Jerry Bowman. The 26 year old retired on January1st, 1975. Montreal traded Bowman to the Tigers in May 1972, he waslater released by Detroit in July 1973. Bowman played a total of 24minor league games where he hit .189 with 0 HR's and 3 RBI's.

The Expos have improved on offense without giving up the defensive side so far this season. After spending much of 1976 as the worst offensive team in baseball with maybe the best pitching and defense in baseball, the Expos are on pace for 40 more runs this year. Two keys to the offensive improvement have been 2nd year 1B Darren Maher and trade acquision LF Mat Garnett. They represent over 25 % of the RBI totals and 30 % of the runs scored.

Montreal Starters AGE W-L ERA GS IP K WHIP K/9
Taft, Jamari 29 4-0 1.44 6 43 42 0.87 8.7
Trevino, Javier 30 4-1 1.11 5 40 26 0.54 5.8
Hernanez, Eddie 24 0-5 5.83 5 29 30 1.77 9.2

Vera, Carlos 23 3-1 2.42 4 26 11 1.27 3.8

Young Eddie Hernanez has struggled so far this season, but with just 5 starts under his belt, we will let him have a shot at bouncing back in the second quarter of the year. Eric Marks has seen his Whip go up every single year he has been a starter for the Expos (5 years) but so far his control with 2.5 BB/9 is a career best and his 7.5 K/9 is as well. Basically is first and last start this year so far have hurt him (11 ER's in 9.1 IP's) Jamari Taft is off to a great start, he is on pace to break Aaron Cregg's Expos record of 13 wins. As well Cregg set a Expos record with a 1.66 ERA as well. Javier Trevino is having a career year, in 1975 he was 11-5 with a 2.33 ERA as he is previous best. The issue for the Expos is can they keep him. He becomes a free agent at the end of the season and he will be looking for big bucks. Carlos Vera is looking good so far as the 5th man in the rotation. Vera has seen his strikeouts drop compared to his 5 starts last year (From 7.6 K/9 to 3.8 K/9)

Montreal Relievers AGE W-L ERA Save IP K WHIP K/9
Gibson, Will 25 0-2 1.59 0 11 3 0.97 2.4
Jones, Robbie 31 0-1 3.86 0 7 9 1.14 11.6
Beasley, Aidan 27 0-0 0.00 7 6 7 0.16 9.9

Gonzalez, Eddie 26 0-0 6.35 0 5 3 2.65 4.8

LHP Jesse Deck has done the job so far this year. Although his career average Whip is 1.22 and he is at 1.50 this year, it is improved from last years 1.69. RHP Will Gibson is the first guy out of the pen when we need to get right handed batters out, opponents are only hitting .111 when runners are in scoring position. RHP Eddie Gonzalez is struggling and is the opposite of Gibson, he has allowed batters to hit .375 in the same situation. The Expos will demote Gonzalez to AAA and call up RHP Mark Holmgren. The 28 year old Holmgren is 0-0 with 8 saves, a 2.70 ERA in 10 games for AAA Seattle. LHP Robbie Jones has made a living getting lefties out. The vet is in his 9th season in the MLB and he is just doing that, lefties are hitting just .091 against him this year. LHP Dave Marland as well is doing a job on lefties, they are hitting just .143 this year. Marland is in his 3rd stint as an Expos, he was 2-2 with a 1.27 ERA in 14 games last year. RHP Chris Muckenfuss has not had a great start this year. Righties usually hit .244 against him, this year he is at .438. CL Aiden Beasley has been perfect so far, he is 7 for 7 in save opps and opponents are hitting .050 with a .100 OPS in 20 at bats. Last year he had 20 saves, he is on pace for 28 this year.

Montreal Catchers AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Capellan, David 25 18 51 0 4 .255 .603 0
Samms, Nate 35 11 37 0 4 .378 .948 0

David Capellan has become the Expos #1 catcher taking over from Nate Samms. Although not lighting it up offensively he is the better defensive catcher. He has thrown out 37.5% of the runners attempting a steal and maintains a 2.27 ERA when he catches. Samms is hitting for average but the power is definitely gone. He has 1 more year guaranteed on his contract and will likely see his playing time continue to diminish.

Montreal Infielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Nichols, Chris 25 25 95 1 11 .316 .775 13

Duran, Ricardo 22 11 26 0 6 .500 1.266 1
Drennan, Brooks 26 8 11 0 0 .182 .490 2

1B Brooks Drennan is basically just getting the odd lefty bat pinch hit assignment and give Maher at 1B an occasional day off. So far he has had 1 start at 1B and appeared twice at 3B. 1B Darren Maher is having a much better season than his rookie year last year. He hit just .234 with 9 HR's and 36 RBI's last year. He is on pace for 24 HR's and 52 RBI's this year. 2B Chris Nichols has been a nice surprise at 2B. Last year he hit just .236 with 0 HR's and 4 RBI's in 24 games. 3B Mike Sullivan was called up to cover during the Gilberto Luna injury. This is his 1st stint in the MLB and is a .270 hitter since 1972 at various levels of professional baseball. He looks like he would be a capable starter at 3B eventually. SS Ricardo Duran contribute mostly as a defensive player hitting just .189 with a HR and 10 RBIs in 43 games last year. SS David Sanchez is having at solid year at the plate so far, although he had 9 triples last year and is still looking for his 1st this year.

LF David de la Torre has actually started 23 times in RF. With over half his 23 hits for extra bases, he has contributed to the improved offense the Expos have this season. LF Mat Garnett was previously mentioned as a contributor to the Expos offense, he is on pace for 8 HR's and 48 RBI's, his previous career highs were 8 HR's and 35 RBI's. Garnett is also a 1974 Gold Glove LF. LF Raul Rodriquez, after a great debut with the Expos hitting .326 with 4 HRs and 27 RBIs in 71 games in 1975, he hit just .215 with 1 HR and 8 RBI's in 57 games last year and is worse even this year. The Expos will demote Rodriquez to AAA and call up 26 year old Jorge Garrido. Garrido is hitting .318 with 4 HR's and 11 RBI's in 15 games for AAA Seattle. He has never had a MLB at yet. LF Yue-Jiu Zhou is in his rookie season for Montreal. Although he has only started 3 times, ( 2 LF and 1 CF), he has looked good so far in those games. He is scouted as a good contact hitter and good speed. He was ranked 97th in the MLB's Top prospects for 1977. CF Danny Plantz, he has struggled offensively so far and but has played well defensively. The Expos need to get him some confidence back and will send him to AAA Seattle till mid season. Most likely LF Mat Garnett will move to CF. The Expos will promote LF Domingo Torres from AAA, the 29 year old is hitting .261 with 2 HR's and 6 RBI's in 14 games. Torres has 385 MLB games under his belt, for his career he is hitting .250 with 24 HRs and 120 RBI's.
