1st May 1874 The blues have surprised both their fans and themselves as they managed a second winning start to a season. This year they have started with 5 wins and 4 losses. This has led them to being joint first in the AL table at this early stage. Even though the team have started well the batting has been a little bit of a struggle at the start of the month as they scored only 55 runs during the month. The best of the batting came from Catcher Frank Fleet. Fleet has started the season in good form as he took 14 hits from 36 at bats. This gave him an average of .389 along with 9 runs and 5 RBI's for the month. The pitching started with solid form as Cy Bentley again started all the games. In the 9 games he played the work load was 73 innings pitched. These saw him give up 96 hits and 23 earned runs. His ERA for the month was 2.84. The team gave up a total of 60 runs. 1st May 1874 The fans of the Athletics have a much better feeling about the season after the first month on the year. The team produced some solid form as they won 5 games and lost 4. This put them in joint first place in the AL table along side the Cleveland Blues. The batting was on strong form during April, scoring 64 runs in total. The best of the batters was Centre Fielder Jim O'Rourke. O'Rourke started all 9 games and had 38 at bats in those games. These at bats saw him gain 15 hits, 8 runs and 6 RBI's. This earned him an average of .395 for the month. This strong batting saw him win his first AL Batter of the Month award. John Peters showed what he can bring to the team in his career by earning the Rookie of the Month award in the AL. He started all 9 games and earned an average of .311 from 14 hits in 45 at bats. The pitching of Dick McBride continued to show its solid form during the month as he was once again the starter of choice. McBride pitched 79 innings in 9 games starts. 1st May 1874 The Brown Stockings defence of their MLB Championship title started on an average note. The fans are hoping for improvements as the team had 4 wins and 5 losses in April. This leaves them in joint second place but in touch with the leaders only 1 game behind. The batting managed to score 58 runs in April. This was very solid and was led by star Batter Cap Anson. Anson, who is playing Right Field this season, had 44 at bats which produced 17 hits for an average of .386. These at bats also gave him 8 runs and 8 RBI's. The pitching was the star for the month as the good form of starter George Zettlein continued from last season. Zettlein pitched 80 innings in 9 game starts. He gave up 72 hits and 13 earned runs to post an ERA of 1.46. These figures were enough to earn him the first AL Pitcher of the Month award of the season. The team gave up 48 runs during the month. Charlie Sweasey went down with injury mid month. He was diagnosed with a strained hamstring and will miss 6-7 weeks of the season. This was good enough to lift them up to joint 1st place in the AL table along side the St. Louis Brown Stockings in a tight division where all team are separated by 1 game. The batting scored a solid 66 runs during the month. The best of the batting came from Second Baseman John Hatfield. Hatfield started all 10 games and had 47 at bats. These at bats produced 18 hits, 5 runs and 6 RBI's for an average of .383 The pitching of Cherokee Fisher showed a marked improvement in May as he started 9 out of the 10 games. He pitched 79 innings and gave up 83 hits and 16 earned runs for an ERA of 1.82. This was enough to earn him his 13th Career AL Pitcher of the Month award. Reliever Jack Manning made his 1st career start in the other game. 1st June 1874 The fans of the Red Stockings continued to enjoy their teams start to the season. Boston continues to lead the NL table after another solid 6-4 month. This lead though is only 1 game as both the Chicago White Stockings and Cincinnati Reds put the pressure on the team. The batting scored 72 runs during May. It was tight to chose the best batter this month as 2 players starred. Our decision is to go for Right Fielder Tim Murnane as the best batter. He picked up an average of .392 from 50 at bats with 20 hits. He also scored 10 runs and 7 RBI's. Levi Meyerle pushed him close with a slightly better average but a worse hit and run count. The pitching was again Bobby Mathews. Mathews started all 10 games, including 3 on consecutive days, and pitched 75.1 innings. These innings work saw him give up 93 hits and 24 earned runs for an ERA of 2.87. The team gave up 77 runs in total during the month. The batting was affected by injuries. They lost John McMullin early in the month. He missed 3 weeks of the month with a latissimus dorsi strain. He returned late in the month. 1st July 1874 While the fans of most of the MLB clubs are enjoying a season of tight and tough pennant races, the fans of the Brooklyn Atlantics are hiding away in shame. The reason for this is the ineffectiveness that their side has shown this year. The team managed a 2-8 month in June to leave them last in the NL and adrift of the rest 12 games behind. The poor run of results the side has seen this season has seen the owner decide to make changes. Manager Pat Brown was the first to be shown the door at the end of the month. Chris English has been signed as his replacement. English was previously the pitching coach for the St. Louis Brown Stockings single A minor league team. The GM Gabriel Morgan was the next to see the door. The team have yet to name his replacement. The batting scored a low 56 runs. The only bright spark in what was a poor batting performance was the form of Third Baseman Bill Boyd. Boyd managed to gain an average of .341 with 15 hits from 44 at bats. He also claimed 9 runs and 5 RBI's The pitching was changed in June to try and see if that would change things. John Greason was given 9 of the starts in June and he pitched 67.2 innings to give up 92 hits and 29 earned runs. This earned him an ERA of 3.86. 1st July 1874 The fans of the Athletics enjoyed a wonderful month in June. The team produced a record of 7-3 in June to see them move back to being joint top in the AL along side the Baltimore Canaries in a tight pennant race. The batting had a wonderful month as they scored 99 runs. The best of these was Left Fielder John Glenn. Glenn started 8 games and had 37 at bats. These at bats produced an average of .459 as he claimed 17 hits, 12 runs and 6 RBI's. These figures earned hom the Batter of the Month award in the AL. The pitching of Dick McBride was again in excellent form. He pitched 79 innings in 10 game starts. These innings saw him give up 87 hits and 15 earned runs for an ERA of 1.71. This earned him the AL Pitcher of the Month award. The team gave up a total of 58 runs. The team completed the clean sweep of awards for the month as Rookie John Peters picked up the Rookie of the Month award for the AL with an average of .283 from 10 game starts. The team lost Fred Treacey mid month with shoulder inflammation. He is expected to be out for 6 weeks.
