Saturday, May 4, 1878, at Washington Olympics (5-7 5th in the Liberty League)
John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 5-5 2.93 0.9/3.0 BB/K) vs. Bones Lane, Wash. (35 L 3.7 3.65 1.9/2.0 BB/K) Won - 7 to 6 We made 7 errors, 2 each by me and Poppy. 3B Bill Rush made his first of the year today. I had 3 hits; hope that means the slump is history. Spider Coleman had 2 hits with a triple, but came up lame after sliding into third and is going to be gimpy for a week or so. Backup C Wilson Schroeder had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. He has thrown out 1 of the 2 base runners who have tried to steal on him so far. Eb Burke, the Gold Glover has only thrown out 6 of 18 this year. I am going to let Schroeder play this next series and see what he does. One thing he has over Burke is that he can run. Other Games: Boston (3) at Providence (4) - Will Taylor (7-4) over Charlie Moss (6-6). Taylor had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Do you remember when Bendy was getting hits? Rookie 2b John Meredith had 3 hits, but made 2 errors. For Boston, lf Pete Bucolo had 4 hits with 2 doubles, stole a base and scored a run. Brooklyn (5) at Cincinnati (2) - Pop Yurkovich (4-7) over Fred Cline (7-3). Each team only had 8 hits. Cincinnati's 8 errors cost them the game. Brooklyn only made 2. 2B John Bohler had 2 hits, stole a base, and scored a run. SS Dan Mitchell, in his first game of the year, hit a 2-run home run. He had been out since Spring with a strained groin. 3B Rube Ford had 2 hits and scored a run. |

Tuesday, May 7, 1878, vs. Brooklyn Atlantics (5-7 5th in the Liberty League)
Were are 5-1 all-time against Yurkovich, all of the games back in '76 when he pitched for Philadelphia. When I was putting the Haymakers together back in the Winter of '75-76, I almost signed Yurkovich as my #1 pitcher. He is, without a doubt, the hardest throwing pitcher in baseball. Pop Yurkovich, Bkln. (26 R 4-7 2.47 0.6/3.4 BB/K) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 6-5 2.94 0.9/3.1 BB/K) Won - 5 to 2 Brooklyn out-hit us 8 to 6, but we only made 1 error and they made 5. It's the first time we've made fewer than 3 errors in a game this year and we only made as few as 3 once before today. Ends a streak of 10 games in a row with at least 4. RF Dave Taylor had 2 hits with a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 4 of Bendy's last 5 starts have been really good and the 5th one wasn't too bad. Other Games: Washington (1) at Boston (13) - Charlie Moss (7-6) over Bones Lane (3-9). Moss held the Olympics to 7 hits. 2B Bill Thompson had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had 3 RBIs. C Kip Kraft had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. CF George Kunz had 4 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. 3B Sandy Perkes had 5 hits with a double, scored twice and had 2 RBIs. Cincinnati (7) at Providence (4) - Fred Cline (8-3) over Will Taylor (7-5). Cincinnati with 17 hits off Taylor. C Jake Houghton had 3 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. CF Washington Macho had 3 hits with a double and 2 RBIs. |

Saturday, May 11, 1878, vs. Brooklyn Atlantics (5-8 5th in the Liberty League)
On Friday, Troy owner and League President Jersey Thompson passed away suddenly from a heart attack. He was 55 years old. Vice-President Henry Wilson of Washington will assume the presidency. According to the League Constitution, the franchise will be put up for sale after the season. Pop Yurkovich, Bkln. (26 R 4-8 2.45 0.6/3.4 BB/K) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 7-5 2.78 0.8/3.0 BB/K) Won - 5 to 4 3B Bill Rush broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 7th with an inside-the-park home run, his second 4-bagger of the season. He had 3 hits. RF Dave Taylor had 2 hits, stole a base and had an RBI. I had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. Other Games: Washington (6) at Boston (8) in 11 innings - Charlie Moss (8-6) over Bones Lane (3-10). 31 hits by the two teams in this one. C Kip Kraft led off the bottom of the 12th with a double and then CF George Kunz hit a home run to straight away center that went almost 450 feet to win the game. 3B Sandy Perkes had 3 hits and scored a run. 1B Frank Helms had 3 hits and 2 RBIs. For Washington, LF John Rodgers had 5 hits with a triple, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Cincinnati (4) at Providence (5) - Will Taylor (8-5) over Fred Cline (8-4). Both Taylor and Cline had 2 hits as batters. Each team had 9 hits, but Providence only made 1 error to the Reds' 5. Rookie 2B John Meredith had 3 hits, got caught stealing and scored a run. |

Tuesday, May 14, 1878, vs. Brooklyn Atlantics (5-9 5th in the Liberty League)
Pop Yurkovich, Bkln. (26 R 4-9 2.44 0.7/3.2 BB/K) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 8-5 2.72 0.8/2.9 BB/K) Lost - 4 to 1 We only had 5 hits and Brooklyn only made 2 errors. Our only run came on an inside-the-park homer by C Wilson Schroeder. He's got the job from Eb Burke for the time being. The only other hitter to do anything was 3B Bill Rush, who had 2 hits with a leadoff triple in the 4th, but was still standing at third when the third out of the inning was recorded. Bendy was not sharp. Our defense played well. Bendy even walked in a run. If Abe Everette was healthy he'd be getting starts now..... Other Games: Washington (10) at Boston (12) - Charlie Moss (9-6) over Bones Lane (3-11). 34 hits by the two teams in this one. That's 65 hits over the past 2 games. Down 10 to 3, Boston scored 8 times in the bottom of the 7th to take the lead. 3B Sandy Perkes had 3 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. RF Pete Green had 3 hits with a double, scored 3 runs and had 2 RBIs. 2B Billy Little had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and knocked in 2. 1B Frank Helms had 3 hits with a triple, scored twice and had an RBI. Cincinnati (2) at Providence (5) - Will Taylor (9-5) over Roger Lake (0-3) in relief of Fred Cline. Taylor allowed only 6 hits and struck out 6. Fred Cline injured his shoulder in a collision with the catcher and will miss a couple of weeks. LF Silver Borresen had 2 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. 1B Ed Parton had 3 hits, including a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 7th to break a 2-2 tie. He had 4 RBIs. |

Saturday, May 18, 1878, vs. Providence Grays (10-5 1st in the Liberty League)
We're gonna find out, in this series, if Providence really is better than us. We sent infielder Jack Green down to Rochester to get some playing time and recalled CF Yale Molloy to give the struggling Bobby Hubbard a breather. Stub Orlando is hitting pretty well at Rochester. If he continues for the next few games, he may find himself in possession of Bobby Hubbard's job, unless Hub comes to life real quick. He's 2 for his last 20. Will Taylor, Prov. (31 L 9-5 1.79 0.8/3.1 BB/K) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 8-6 2.81 0.8/2.9 BB/K) Won - 5 to 4 Down 4 to 2, we scored 3 in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead. C Wilson Schroeder had the big blow with a run scoring double. He then tried to steal third and C Billy Sullivan threw the ball in to left field and Schroeder scored the go ahead run. 3B Bill Rush had 2 hits and scored 2 runs. SS Sam Cowan had his first multi-hit game since April 6 and raised his average to .200 for the first time this season with 3 hits. He also had an RBI. Hopefully, this will get him rolling finally. Bendy had a great game, holding the Grays to 6 hits and striking out 4. Other Games: Washington (12) at Brooklyn (1) - Bones Lane (4-11) over Pop Yurkovich (5-10). Washington had 17 hits. SS Joe O'Neill had 3 hits and an RBI, but git caught stealing once and made 2 errors. RF Dummy Smith had 2 hits with a home run, a walk, scored twice and drove in 3. Boston (4) at Cincinnati (5) - Jim Postema (1-0) over Charlie Moss (9-7). Postema was 12-2 with a 1.87 ERA for Manchester in the International Association before getting the call-up when Fred Cline got injured. 21-year-old rookie LF Jim LaFrance had 2 hits, stole 3 bases and scored 2 runs. For Boston, 2b Bill Thompson had 4 hits with a triple, stole 5 bases to set a new record (the old record was 3), scored a pair of runs and knocked one in. |

You kinda snuck this in as a blip "On Friday, Troy owner and League President Jersey Thompson passed away suddenly from a heart attack. He was 55 years old. Vice-President Henry Wilson of Washington will assume the presidency. According to the League Constitution, the franchise will be put up for sale after the season."
What does that mean for the team? Could Troy be no more? Move to another city? |

From Reddy: "Who knows what the future brings? But since we have been so successful at the gate and on the field, I would think that there would be people lined up to purchase the Haymakers. And why would they want to move us since we are so profitable right here? But if no one steps up to buy us, the team would be liquidated with all assets, including players' contracts, sold to the highest bidder with the proceeds going to Jersey's heirs. The reason for the sale of the team instead of an heir assuming control is that the League wants to maintain control over who is an owner in this league. They want to be sure that the men owning Liberty League ball clubs are more interested in winning ball games and championships than they are in making a dollar off their teams. If an heir of a deceased owner wishes to keep the club, they would just have to purchase the team from themselves with the approval of the other owners. Jersey' heir is his wife Mary and he had no sons, only 3 daughters, so we are going to have to have a new owner." Editor's Note: If you don't want to know the behind the scenes workings of the game mechanics and maybe spoil the suspension of disbelief for you, don't read on. The real answer is that the deaths of players, managers and owners is totally separate from the decisions about what teams survive a season and whether they relocate. The deaths are rolled at random, but the franchises are maintained based on actual history. For instance, the National League of 1876 had 8 clubs. Before 1877, Philadelphia and New York were tossed out of the League for not playing out their schedules. They were the 6th and 7th place teams. So in the Liberty League the 6th and 7th place teams were tossed out. Since they played their complete schedules, I had to think up a different excuse for them exiting the league. The franchises in the Liberty League will continue to follow the same pattern for their survival. When there are expansion teams in real baseball or new teams to replace exiting ones, these are rolled at random with a city's chances at landing a franchise determined by the population of their metropolitan area. However, if a city loses its team, it must sit out 4 seasons before it is eligible for another team in the same league. There is one exception to teams following real life franchise movements. I have a method for determining market size in the Liberty League. The League average is always 6 and the highest possible is 10. If any city falls below a 2, they must relocate. Since Troy belongs to the Albany metropolitan area, they should be safe from this rule for a while, but I think it may eventually get them. It depends on the size of the other cities in the league, but in 1878 Albany is the 12th largest metropolitan area in the country and in 2010 it is only 65th. One other difference from real baseball is that in this universe, no city, other than New York can have more than one team at a time. New York can have a New York team and a Brooklyn team. Of course, before the 1890's (?) they were actually separate cities, but even after that we will allow a Brooklyn team and a New York team at the same time. Thanks for the response...was more looking for a response from you than Reddy, but that was a cool response.

Tuesday, May 21, 1878, vs. Providence Grays (10-6 1st in the Liberty League)
Will Taylor, Prov. (31 L 9-6 1.96 0.8/3.0 BB/K) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 9-6 2.69 0.9/3.0 BB/K) Won - 2 to 1 Bendy had a 2-hit shutout going until the 9th, when a hit and a Spider Coleman error gave the Grays a run. We only got 5 hits, though. What is wrong with Poppy? He went 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts! He's now hitting .189. Coming into this season he was second all-time in batting average and 1st in RBIs in the Liberty League. He's still 1st in RBIs, but has dropped to 7th on the average list. I've got to stick with him though. He can't have turned into such an easy out overnight, could he? Other Games: Washington (2) at Brooklyn (5) - Pop Yurkovich (6-10) over Bones Lane (4-12). Yurkovich held Washington to 5 hits. He had 3 hits with his bat, scored a run and knocked in 2. All the scoring in this game was done by the 4th inning. Boston (5) at Cincinnati (4) - Charlie Moss (10-7) over Jim Postema (1-1). Postema held Boston to 7 hits, but one was a 2-run homer by SS Paul Fenner. 3B Billy Little had 2 hits with a triple and scored twice. He also reached on an error in the 9th and scored on a passed ball to break the 4-4 tie. |

Saturday, May 25, 1878, vs. Providence Grays (10-7 tied for 1st in the Liberty League)
We are going to give Poppy the day off against Taylor, since Taylor made him look so silly last time. Wilson Schroeder, the catcher, is going to play first, though he has not played there in 2 years (and wasn't very good then). For those of you wondering if Shadow Kielbasa might make a good platoon partner for Popko, the answer is no. Poppy is a switch-hitter, but is much better against right-handers than left-handers. Kielbasa is a left-handed hitter. Besides, Kielbasa is not overwhelming the International Association right now, batting .233. Will Taylor, Prov. (31 L 9-7 1.91 0.7/3.2 BB/K) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 10-6 2.53 0.8/3.0 BB/K) Won - 5 to 1 Sweep! Of the 1st place team! Or, actually, of the team that USED to be first..... Once again, Bendy had a shutout going into the 9th only to lose it. We have now won 9 of our last 10 games. We had 14 hits, tying our season high for a 9-inning game. LF Spider Coleman had 3 hits, stole a base, got caught once, scored a run and knocked one in. RF Dave Taylor, me, 3B Bill Rush and SS Sam Cowan each had 2 hits. Rush had a triple. Other Games: Washington (2) at Brooklyn (9) - Pop Yurkovich (7-10) over Bones Lane (4-13). Yurkovich held Washington to 7 hits and struck out 6. 2B John Bohler had 2 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. 3B Rube Ford had 3 hits with double, scored once and knocked one in. Boston (6) at Cincinnati (2) - Charlie Moss (11-7) over Jim Postema (1-2). CF Charlie Warner had 2 hits with an RBI. C Kip Kraft had 2 hits with a 2-run homer. 2B Bill Thompson had a triple and now has a 20 game hit streak going. Cincinnati CF Washington Macho pulled a muscle and will miss the next month of games. |

Tuesday, May 28, 1878, at Cincinnati Reds (9-9 4th in the Liberty League)
Cincinnati beat us 2 out of 3 at our place last time we met, but that was with Fred Cline in the box. Postema is 2-0 against us. In the first 2 games of last season, he won the Opening Day game in relief and then started the second and held us to 7 hits. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 11-6 2.44 0.8/3.0 BB/K) vs. Jim Postema, Cin. (28 R 1-2 4.00 1.3/3.7 BB/K) Won - 6 to 3 Bendickson only allowed them 6 hits. We had 9. Poppy had 2 with a double and scored twice. Got his average up over .200! CF Bobby Hubbard had 2 hits, stole a base and scored a run. SS Sam Cowan had 2 hits, scored a run and had an RBI. His average is now better than mine or Poppy's, though still not very good. But he finishes May with a .355 average for the month, more than double his April mark. RF Dave Taylor sprained his elbow and will miss the next two weeks. We'll bring CF Stub Orlando up from Rochester and see what he can do. Other Games: Providence (5) at Washington (0) - Will Taylor (10-8) over Bones Lane (4-14). 3-hit shutout for Taylor with 5 strikeouts. RF Lou Landaal had 3 hits, scored a run and knocked in 2. Washington's one bright spot was that they did not make an error. Brooklyn (6) at Boston (4) - Pop Yurkovich (8-10) over Charlie Moss (11-8). Boston out-hit Brooklyn 13 to 9, but made 6 errors to the Atlantics' 1, Yurkovich had a hit and 2 RBIs. RF Deacon Wilson had 2 hits with a double and scored twice. |

Saturday, June 1, 1878, at Cincinnati Reds (9-10 tied for 4th in the Liberty League)
Stub Orlando makes his debut today in right field. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 12-6 2.41 0.8/3.0 BB/K) vs. Fred Cline, Cin. (36 R 8-4 2.55 0.9/2.2 BB/K) Won - 5 to 3 Bendickson only allowed them 6 hits. We had 10. Poppy had 2 with a double and scored twice. (You should be having a feeling of deja vu right now from the last game summary) 3B Bill Rush had 3 hits and stole a base. RF Stub Orlando had a hit in his debut. C Jake Houghton hit a home run for Cincinnati. Other Games: Providence (2) at Washington (1) - Will Taylor (11-8) over Bones Lane (4-15). Taylor with his second straight 3-hitter. He had 2 hits at bat. LF Silver Borresen only had 1 hit, but he stole a base and scored both of the Grays' runs. RF Lou Landaal had 2 hits with a double and knocked in both of the runs. Brooklyn (2) at Boston (3) - Charlie Moss (12-8) over Pop Yurkovich (8-11). Brooklyn scored in the top of the 9th to tie the game at 3, but Boston scored in the bottom of the inning to win it. RF Pete Green hit a single with 1 out, went to second on a passed ball, went to third on a ground out and scored with 2-outs on a passed ball with p Charlie Moss, a .130 hitter at the plate. Green had 2 hit for his 6th straight multi-hit game. Each team only made 1 error. |

Tuesday, June 4, 1878, at Cincinnati Reds (9-10 tied for 4th in the Liberty League)
Eb Burke is back behind the plate today. Wilson Schroeder, after hitting a home run, has gone cold as ice with his bat. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 13-6 2.34 0.8/2.9 BB/K) vs. Fred Cline, Cin. (36 R 8-5 2.51 0.8/2.1 BB/K) Won - 11 to 3 Bendickson only allowed them 6 hits, but only went 7 today as we let Billy Jenkins pitch the final 2 innings. He only allowed them one hit and when 2 Sam Cowan errors loaded the bases with 1 out in the 9th, he pitched out of it without a scratch. He also hit an RBI double! I switched me and Bill Rush, putting Bill in the 3 hole and moving me to 5th in the lineup. He had 2 hits and scored a run and stole a base. I had 2 hits, scored 2 runs and knocked in 2. Poppy had 2 hits with a double again, for the 3rd straight game. He had a RBI. SS Sam Cowan had 2 hits with a double. stole a base, scored twice and knocked in 2. C Eb Burke hit a double and a triple, scored a run and had 2 RBIs. The Schroeder experiment is officially terminated! Other Games: Providence (11) at Washington (3) - Will Taylor (12-8) over Bones Lane (4-16). LF Silver Borresen had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI and an error. RF Lou Landaal had 3 hits, scored twice and knocked in 2. SS Jimmy Mark had 3 hits, stole a base, scored twice and knocked in 3. 3B Sam Clark had 3 hits and scored a run. If you are wondering why Manager George Dennis is sticking with Bones Lane, it is because his second best pitcher, Rufus Lee has an equally impressive record for London in the International Association: 3-14. If you are wondering why Manager George Dennis will not consider himself for the job, you'd have to ask him. He is 17-12 lifetime and 1-0 this season in a single start and a handful of relief appearances. Brooklyn (7) at Boston (6) in 12 innings - Pop Yurkovich (9-11) over Charlie Morlock (0-1) in relief of Charlie Moss. Boston out-hit Brooklyn 16 to 11, but made 6 errors to the Atlantics' 3. 30-year-old rookie 2B Sam Thompson had 2 doubles, scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs. After Yurkovich allowed a lead-off single in the bottom of the 12th, Manager Mike Tonnies replaced him in the box with Buck Richards. Richards got 2 quick outs, but then gave up a single to right to 1B Frank Helms. The runner at first, Billy Little, tried to take third, but RF Guy Monaghan gunned him down to end the game. Charlie Moss had to take a seat on the bench after 11 innings with soreness in his forearm. They say he can probably still pitch with it and it will likely go away in a day or two or three. |

Saturday, June 8, 1878, vs. Boston Red Caps (12-9 3rd in the Liberty League)
Boston beat us 2 out of 3 at their South End Grounds the last time we met. They whomped us good in 2 games and we eked out a 2 to 1 win in the other. Charlie Moss, Bos. (37 R 12-8 2.65 0.7/2.8 BB/K) vs. John Bendickson, Troy (26 R 14-6 2.30 0.8/3.0 BB/K) Won - 4 to 2 Bendickson only allowed them 4 hits. The best offense in the League and they could only get 4 hits! Bendy is on some kind of roll of late. I took the day off, because Moss has always been tough on me and Wash Horsfall has hit him well. And he did again today, getting 3 hits with a double, stealing 2 bases, scoring a run and knocking one in. SS Sam Cowan continued his good hitting of late with 2 hits, including a double. He also scored a run. I want to get Horsfall into the next game, but where will I put him? The logical choice is at second for me again, but I am not going to sit out all 3 games. But Rush at third and Cowan at short are two of our hottest hitters. I dunno.....but I can't sit another game. One was too many. I know I can hit this guy; I just haven't yet. Other Games: Cincinnati (13) at Washington (8) - Roger Lake (1-3) in relief of Fred Cline over Bones Lane (4-17). Fred Cline was injured again in another collision on the base paths. He tweaked his shoulder and will miss 2 or 3 weeks. When Roger Lake came in to start the 3rd inning, the Reds were down 8 to 5. He pitched 7 shutout innings to get the win. CF Henry Gunther had 3 hits and scored 2 runs. SS Jim Ware had 3 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. 3B Frank Young had 2 hits with a double, walked twice, scored twice and knocked in a pair of runs. Brooklyn (1) at Providence (4) - Will Taylor (13-8) over Pop Yurkovich (9-12). The Providence Grays look like they have stolen the Haymaker formula for building a winning ball club. More emphasis on the pitching and defense than on the sticks. They only made 2 errors today. LF Silver Borresen had 2 hits, stole 2 bases and scored a run. RF Arther Purfield had 2 hits with a double, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. Will Taylor had a shutout going until Brooklyn SS Dan Mitchell hit a home run in the 9th. It's Mitchell's second of the season, tying him with Haymaker Bill Rush for the League lead. |
