Opening Day 1880
Philadelphia (5) at New Haven (6) - For the second year in a row, New Haven upset Philadelphia on Opening Day. Rookie SS John Nocella had 2 hits and scored twice. Newcomer 1B Willard DeVaux, the Viking of Valhalla and ex-Haymaker, also had 2 hits and knocked in 2 runs. In the top of the 9th, down 6 to 4, 1B Fred Palmer doubled with 1 out and 3B Joe Carter singled him home with his 3rd hit of the day. But RF Jumbo Reeher and LF Dave Bigelow both flew out to Heinie Roach in leftfield to end the game. Charlie Charles pitched the game for New Haven and Paul Skinner for Philadelphia. Philly out-hit the Nutmegs 13 to 9 and Skinner struck out 7, but the Centennials committed 9 errors to New Haven's 3. Brooklyn (9) at Pittsburg (10) - Neither pitcher was particularly effective, but rookie Jay Anderson ended up with the win over Paul Pratt. Rookie 1B Adoniram Horlacher had 3 hits, including a double and a triple. He scored twice and knocked in a pair. 39-year-old Jim Wells, the ex-Haymaker, hit a home run for the Alleghenys. With 2 outs in the top of the 9th and the tying run at second and the go ahead run at first, SS Fred Clapp, who had 4 hits in the game, flew out to Albion Floyd in centerfield to end the game. Clapp had a double and scored twice. 2B Tom McDonald had a double and a triple for Brooklyn and scored a run. Boston (3) at Louisville (4) - Louisville scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th with 2 outs. 3B Dave Thompson, who was on third base after C Frank Shea's bad throw on his steal of second, scampered home when pitcher John Taylor threw a wild pitch. John Walker held Boston to 6 hits to earn the victory. Chicago (13) at Cincinnati (5) - Madison Coy defeated Frank Carlucci. New manager and 1B Bill Goldberg had 4 hits for the Colts. He scored twice and had 2 RBIs. 3B Con Stone had 2 triples and scored twice. SS Jim Greeley had 2 hits and scored 3 times. LF Jack Harrell had 2 hits, including a triple. He scored twice and knocked in 3. 3B August Kessler was injured for Cincinnati and is expected to miss 3 weeks with a cracked rib he suffered on a tag attempt by 2B Bob Rene when Kessler doubled in the first inning. I forgot to mention that Cincinnati was sold in the off-season by Dad Magee to Cy Atwater, 56. I thought about taking them over, but decided to take over whoever the new team was. But when it turned out to be Pittsburg, I could not. Maybe next year. |

On April 14, Brooklyn beat Cincinnati, 6 to 5, in 17 innings. Cincinnati scored a run in the top of the 9th to tie the game and both teams scored a run in the 16th. 1B Bill Dudley had 4 hits for the Reds, including the game-tying single in the 9th. John Criswell, in his Liberty League debut, took the loss for Louisville. Also on April 17, 37-year-old Jim Rebovich, in for the injured Paul Skinner, pitched a 2-hit shutout for Philadelphia at Chicago, winning 7 to 0 over the 39-year-old Walt Marshall, making his Liberty League debut. On April 28, Jim Rebovich of Philadelphia pitched his second shutout of the season against Brooklyn, allowing 5 hits in the 2 to 0 win. Paul Pratt only allowed 4 hits in defeat. June 1880
On June 2, Philadelphia scored twice in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game and then, after Chicago scored a run in the top of the 11th, scored twice in the bottom of the inning to win it, 10 to 9. CF Joe Wilcox had a double and 4 hits and scored twice. LF Bill Hummel had 3 hits, including a double and a 2-out 2-run triple to win the game in the 11th. SS Jumbo Meek had a double and 3 hits and scored 3 times. With the victory, Jim Rebovich ended his 5 game losing streak, though he by no means pitched well. On May 10, he defeated Cincinnati raising his record to 8-4 and lowering his ERA to 1.84. Since then, he is 2-7 with a 3.04 ERA, nearly a run higher than the League ERA. At 37, he may be nearing the end of the road. Even though their number one pitcher, Paul Skinner, is injured, Philadelphia has other options, including 30-year-old John Kyle, who has a 1.15 ERA in the National Association for Washington. Also on June 2, Louisville scored 3 times in the bottom of the 9th to beat New Haven, 14 to 13. 29-year-old Rookie C Jim Finley, an ex-Haymaker farmhand, appearing in his first ever Liberty League game was given credit for the win with 4 shutout innings of relief pitching. He allowed 3 hits and walked a batter. He also went 1 for 2 as a hitter. 1B Jesse Abegg only had 1 hit, but it was the game-winning single. 3B Dave Thompson had 5 hits, including a double. He scored 3 times and had an RBI. New Haven 2B Joe Neill had 3 doubles and 3 RBIs in defeat. RF Bill Enright had 4 hits and 2 RBIs. Also on June 2, Dan Barnes pitched a 3-hit shutout against Boston, winning, 1 to 0. John Taylor allowed 5 hits in the loss, dropping his record to 5-9. Ex-Haymaker Vic Wilcox had 2 hits for Brooklyn and drove in the only run of the game. On June 5, Jim Rebovich finally pitched a good game after a long string of poor outings. He held Chicago to 1 run and 3 hits through 6 innings, but in the 7th he tore a muscle in his back and will miss the rest of the season. Philadelphia won 15 to 1. 2B Jumbo Meek had a double and 4 hits, scoring 4 times with 2 RBIs. C Pidgey Weaver also had a double and 4 hits, scoring 3 times with 3 RBIs. Also on June 5, Paul Pratt held every hitter in the Boston lineup hitless except CF Sam Abbott, but Abbott had 3 hits including a 2-run home run and Pratt and Brooklyn lost, 5 to 2. Abbott scored 3 times. Also on June 5, in his second game back from exile, SS Pat Lee had 4 hits, scoring twice with 4 RBIs as Cincinnati defeated Jay Anderson and the Pittsburg Alleghenys, 17 to 5. 3B August Kessler also had 4 hits, including a double. On June 7, Everett Bulthuis pitched a 6-hit shutout at Brooklyn and had a 2-run double as Boston beat the Atlantics, 4 to 0. On June 7, in his third game back from exile, ss Pat Lee ruptured his Achilles tendon in Cincinnati's 4 to 2 win at Pittsburg and is out for the foreseeable future. It is questionable whether he will ever return. The loss is Pittsburg's 4th in a row. Also on June 7, Louisville won their 7th in a row and 13th in the last 14 games to open up a 6 game lead over Cincinnati and the struggling Alleghenys. RF Andrew Bouse was injured in the 8 to 3 win over New Haven and is expected to miss a month of action with a pulled hamstring. On June 9, LF Fred Campbell had 3 doubles and drove in a run for the Reds. That was the only run the Reds could muster, however, and they lost at New Haven, 4 to 1. Pitcher Fred Wood held Cincinnati to 6 hits and had two himself, including a run-scoring double. Also on June 9, John Taylor held Pittsburg to 4 hits and hit 2 doubles to beat the Alleghenys, 6 to 3. Also on June 9, Madison Coy and the Chicago Colts finally cooled off Louisville, beating them 7 to 1. Coy held the Eclipse to 5 hits. 1B/Manager Bill Goldberg had a double and 3 hits and scored a run. On June 11, 1b Jesse Porter had 4 hits, including a double and a triple, as Brooklyn beat Philadelphia and John Kyle, 9 to 2. On June 12, in their 7 to 5 win against Philadelphia, Brooklyn's Dan Barnes was injured and is expected to miss about 3 months. His pitching had been much improved this season over last year. He was 6-5 at the time of the injury. Last year he was 2-10. CF Henry Shaw had a double and 4 hits, scoring 4 runs for the Atlantics. Also on June 12, Cincinnati beat New Haven, 8 to 6, but SS Dick Komp broke his elbow when Bill Enright slid in hard to second to break up a double play chance. He will miss the rest of the season. On June 14, Brooklyn beat Louisville, 8 to 6, in 10 innings. Lew Meyerhoffer was injured in the first inning and will miss a couple of weeks. C Jim Finley was called upon again for relief pitching duty and this time was not as successful, but still was not bad for a non-pitcher. He gave up 5 runs in 6 innings, taking the loss. 3B Adolph Marr had 5 hits, including 3 doubles. He scored twice and knocked in 2. RF George Zivic, making his first start of the year for Louisville, had 4 hits, including a triple. Also on June 14, John Taylor held Cincinnati to 2 hits, as Boston won, 1 to 0. He also had 2 hits at bat. Frank Carlucci held Boston to 7 hits and struck out 7 in the tough loss. Also on June 14, Pittsburg only got 3 hits off John Kyle of Philadelphia in the first 10 innings, but had 2 in the 11th to win, 2 to 1. CF Buck Freeman led off the 11th with a single and RF Jesse Austin followed him with a triple to end the game. They each had 2 hits for 4 of Pittsburg's 5 total. |
