I'm torn on this 1. I hate Joe Morgan the announcer but he is 1 of the top 3 2B of All Time (Hornsby & Alomar 1&2) Bench was a great defensive C and is probably the 2nd best C behind Pudge Rodriguez (Mauer isnt there yet) Barry Larkin is my 3rd fav SS of all time (Guillen & Dunston)
I am gonna go with Johnny Bench. |

I'll go for Bench. IMO best of all time a his position. Morgan and Rose would follow. Larkin probably edges Robby. I'd have to say that Robby's case is weakened by dint of playing half of his career with the Orioles. If his entire career stats had come for the Reds he'd give Bench a run for the money.

But I'm pretty sure Bench will take it. Too many people dislike Morgan these days and Rose is banned from consideration. Well, not really, but his banishment is going to cost him popularity votes in a poll like this. |

Folks, I apologize indirectly for this thread. USA Today's sport section and columns are disorganized and show signs of being run by individuals suffering from attention deficit disorder.
As with other projects, this one started out with great fanfare only to peter out when the editors got bored. I will never do anything like this again involving stuff from that newspaper or its blogs. There is a franchise player winner of the Cincinnati Reds from among the candidates that I showed in an earlier post. Some other winners have also been posted; it seems the newspaper lost interest in the project and, guess what, the baseball season is winding down now. If you are at all interested, the summary page is here: Franchise players: Pick the greatest player on - USATODAY.com Click on the winner names to see the original blog polls on which the paper was supposed to be reporting voting results every week. Never again. I should have known with USA Today; it's perfect for today's short attention span folks. Finish up a project as promised? What project? It was still a fun project. We should all complain to USA Today for their ADD.

![]() Replace the Dodgers TBA with Koufax and the Cardinals TBA with Musial and you're left with Red Sox, Yankees, Tigers, Rangers, Braves, Phillies, and Giants with as yet unnamed Franchise Players. When did this whole thing start? I ask because 1 Franchise Player per week = 30 weeks, so it takes a while to get through them all. If they've done 23, they've been at it for 23 weeks. Patience grasshopper. ![]() EDIT: 23 weeks takes you to the week before they did the voting for the Cardinals, so maybe they took a week off from this for the All-Star Game, but they're pretty close to being on schedule.

No, I meant the blog (Daily Pitch) picked the winner and the newspaper (USA Today) did not publish the results in some cases. Reds / Pete Rose for one.
Edit: Looking over the list, I think Rockies / Todd Helton was another who was by omitted USA Today. The rest of the winners got at least some mention in the paper along with voting results. In the beginning, however, they were listing the polls in advance and the results a week later for every franchise. Sometime in late July or early August they sort of lost interest in the idea. I'll continue to post whatever they publish; I read USA Today every day so if they do announce winners, you will see them here. Last edited by 1998 Yankees; 09-20-2011 at 09:08 PM. |

This one wasn't close, either.

I know Willie Mays was good. But how can he win out over the all-time homerun king? He has the most homeruns ever in a season and the most homeruns for a career. He was the most feared hitter of all time.

Willie Mays was good, but Bonds was better. Just look at their numbers. Bonds beats him across the board.

It is a fan voting, so it really comes down to if someone liked the player or not. I guess numbers don't really come into it.
