Dear Mom and Daddy, 4 May 1932

Hey HO! What do ya know? This is Bubba direct from Chicago.

I am doing just fine, and hope you two are as well.

We are doing fine, in second place. I am 2-3, but have been pitching well as of late.

The State of Arkansas sent me a letter, confirming my commision. Thanks Daddy, I am sure your influence as State Representative surely helped.

I spoke with the Colonel last night, my Battalion Commander. He doesn't seem too impressed that I am a ball player. He says the only good thing is that I should be fit.

I am to be a platoon leader, with 15 men assigned to me. This will be after my training, of course. I have not as of yet met the men, I will at the end of this month.

The club has been very understanding. It will be OK to miss a weekend a month, as they can move the pitching rotation around a little bit to deal with it. I should not miss any starts.

Daddy, I know the farm is feeling the pinch of this down turn. I sent some money down to Little Rock into our accounts, that should help some.

Ella Mae has told me that she has been offered a position at the State College in Little Rock, to teach English. It would mean us having to move away from El Dorado, so I don't know. What do you all think? Her pay would go from $1500 a year up to $3500 a year....and that would be right nice.

Daddy, would you, Charly, and Jeb be able to manage the farms if we went up to Little Rock? Let me know quick, if you would.

The Cubs continued their excellent play today, taking over sole
possession of first place.

Bubba Jones pitched his finest game of the year, a six-hit
shut out of the Cardinals.

Krebs continued his fine play, increasing his average to .266
quite a change from the sub-200 values of just a week or two
ago.

The Cubs dropped a tough 6-5 decision to the Phillies today,
falling to second place in the division

Bubba Jones ran out of gas in the eigth, giving up 3 runs..and
made things worse by two more in the ninth.

Manager Clarkson was some second-guessed by leaving in Bubba
too long. Said Clarkson after the game-"The boy was pitching
well, and I wanted him to get the win. Looking back, I should
have brought in Mort to finish it off."

Bubba threw 159 pitches on the day, the highest total of his
career.

The Cubs scored just 5 runs, even though they had 18 players
reach base during the game. Jones himself got three of the
hits, also a career best.

It took 446 pitches, 20 innings, and 39 base runners to decide
yesterdays contest between the Cubs, and a tough Miami ball club.

Reporters are scrambling to remember a longer game in the league,
with no success to this point.

The Cubs set a Major League Record for strikeouts in the game, at
21, ten by starter Bubba Jones.

Another good hitting day for our Cubs, as they rapped out a cool
20 vs. the Bisons.

Robert Jones led the way, with another two hits...Robert is batting
.226 on the year, and is second in hits amongst pitchers in the
entire league.

Jones also won his fourth game of the year.

"These fellers sure can fluff up your ERA."
Those were the words of Cubs starter Bubba Jones, after
a rather poor outing verses the Phillies here last night.

Erskine of the Philadelphia club ran his record to 7-0, and
with Brownell gaining his 10th save. Brownell has yet to
give up a run this year, continuing his spectuacular play.

Schlesinger lengthened his hitting streak up to 22 games...the
second time this year he has had a streak of this magnitude.

Despite another 20 hits, the Cubs dropped another decision to
the New Yorkers today.

Manager Clarkson had this to say-"Every one of our regulars is
hitting .292 or better....and we should be well into the lead.
The pitchers just haven't gotten it done."

Clarkson went on to say, somewhat ominously...."There will be
h*** to pay if they don't start bearing down."

Ella Mae,

Hey! Hi there, and I miss you.

We are doing OK, in second place 3 games back of Miami. It seems like we are always behind Miami.

I am doing fine, even with the heat wave and all. How are the crops holding up?

Daddy said the new irragation system is working fine, as long as the creek don't run dry. You watch it, and let me know.

Have you decided about the job up in Little Rock, Ella? Whatever you want is fine. We can put up the house, or let Charly and Jeb stay in it, and maybe buy a new house in Little Rock, near the College.

Did you get the Parlor Stand and Table set? I ordered it right here in Chicago, at the Sears, Roebuck & Co. store. I thought you might like it, with the second shelf, and the "fancy turned legs." Just like yours, Ella Mae! They were a little pricey, but I know you have been looking for something to put in the corner, the one by the curio cabinet.

My drill with the unit went real well. We had a training weekend at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. I got in a little late, but joined the Battalion out in the field. Got bit something fierce by the chiggers!

The unit is swell. My platoon sergeant, SFC (that means Sergeant, First Class) Wills is older, and served under "Black Jack" Pershing in the Great War. We are A Platoon, of B Company. I went to SFC Wills on the first night, and asked for him to keep me out of trouble, and asked him to let me know what I needed to do. He was right pleased that I came to him, and he promised to take care of the men. He took one young 'un out behind the tent, and whupped him hard for talkin' back to him.

The men seem a little over excited that I am a ball player, and I had to throw some pitches to show them my arm. It was my regular day to throw, so that worked out pretty well.

The second night, our platoon got into a bit of a tussle with B Platoon, Company B. Before you knowed it, we had us a regular rhubarb! Nobody got real hurt, and the Col. don't mind, he says it's good to fight, stirs up the blood. I did OK, I really clocked the 1LT of B company. Knocked him right down on his buttocks. The men now call themselves "Bubba's Brawlers." I asked the Sarge if we should stop it, and he said hell no, pardon my language, it is good for the moral.

third straight to the Atlanta Braves.

The loss elevated the Braves into second place, ahead of our
Cubs.

Jones took the loss, falling to 4-6 on the year.

This is the whisper at the ball park, as Bubba Jones
loses again, and falls to 4-7 on the year.

More importantly, the Cubs just can't seem to get it
together....remaining 6 games back, in third place.

Said Manager Clarkson-"Danged if I know what's the

The Cubs win their third in a row, stomping the Bisons 9-5 today.

Schlesinger got another 3 hits, increasing his average up to .341

Fredric Sims smacked a three run home run in the top of the eighth,
helping to seal the victory.

After the game, the players went out to visit the Falls at Niagara, an
event enjoyed by all. This idea, have no little merit, came from Bubba
Jones, having visited the Falls earlier this year on his honeymoon.

Jones pitched decently today, in gaining the victory for the Cubs.

It was a very well played game today by the Cubs, as they
trounced the Reds 7-1 under beautiful cerulean skies.

It is a tight game until the seventh inning, when Krebs
laced a bases loaded double down the right field line.

Earlier, in the fourth inning, Krebs had hit a two-run
homerun to give the home ball club the lead.

It was a smartly pitched game from Robert Jones, who gave up
just one run, whilst striking out 15 Reds.

Another long, long game for the Cubs! This time the count went
in their favor, as they outlasted the Tigers 4-2 in 15 innings.

The story of the day was the quality pitching of the Cubs,
limiting the Tigers to just 8 hits over 15 innings.

Schlesinger rapped four hits, and stole two bases, increasing
his league leading total for swiping bases to 34.

An ejection, a fight, and a fanatic running sans apparel through
the outfield grass today...and incidentially, a baseball game
was played!

The Tigers, sporting the best record in the league, beat Bubba Jones
and our Cubs today, 7-1. The game never was close, and the Cubs
scored their only run on a Zuniga Homer in the ninth.

A thrilling game today, which saw the Cubs come back and
win in the tenth inning.

Bubba Jones was cruising right along until the ninth inning,
with a 6-2 lead. After giving up a run, and leaving the bases
loaded, the reliever Dame gave up two hits, allowing all three
runs to score. This tied the game at six, and forced extra
innings.

Krebs doubled home Benning in the bottom of the tenth for the win.

After the game, pitcher Jones had this to say about the blown
save by Dame--"He's a great pitcher, and I'm glad we won the
game...I don't mind the least about not gettin' the win."

Said Manager Clarkson-"Fine, unselfish play will hold well with
the club. Robert has gotten a Commission from the Arkansas Guard,
and a couple of the players have been calling him Sir. This has
been bugging Bubba no end, but I don't think he minds."

Mike Dossett of the Phillies has never had a day like this.

NO PLAYER in the HISTORY of our league has ever had a day
like this!

Going into the seventh inning, the score was still close, at
5-2. Over the next three innings, Dossett knocked in 11 runs!!!

Two grand slams, and a three run shot later, the score was 17-2.

The 12 RBI increased his league leading total to 86.

Phillies Manager Mack stated---"I once saw Williston knock in
eight, back in '05, but I have never seen anything quite like this!

Manager Clarkson was some second-guessed by leaving in Bubba too long. Said Clarkson after the game-"The boy was pitching well, and I wanted him to get the win. Looking back, I should have brought in Mort to finish it off." Bubba threw 159 pitches on the day, the highest total of his career. The Cubs scored just 5 runs, even though they had 18 players reach base during the game. It seems like we are always behind Miami. I am doing fine, even with the heat wave and all. How are the crops holding up? Daddy said the new irragation system is working fine, as long as the creek don't run dry. You watch it, and let me know. Have you decided about the job up in Little Rock, Ella? Whatever you want is fine. We can put up the house, or let Charly and Jeb stay in it, and maybe buy a new house in Little Rock, near the College. Did you get the Parlor Stand and Table set? I ordered it right here in Chicago, at the Sears, Roebuck & Co. store. I thought you might like it, with the second shelf, and the "fancy turned legs." Just like yours, Ella Mae! They were a little pricey, but I know you have been looking for something to put in the corner, the one by the curio cabinet. My drill with the unit went real well. We had a training weekend at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. I got in a little late, but joined the Battalion out in the field. Got bit something fierce by the chiggers! The unit is swell. My platoon sergeant, SFC (that means Sergeant, First Class) Wills is older, and served under "Black Jack" Pershing in the Great War. We are A Platoon, of B Company. I went to SFC Wills on the first night, and asked for him to keep me out of trouble, and asked him to let me know what I needed to do. He was right pleased that I came to him, and he promised to take care of the men. He took one young 'un out behind the tent, and whupped him hard for talkin' back to him. The men seem a little over excited that I am a ball player, and I had to throw some pitches to show them my arm. It was my regular day to throw, so that worked out pretty well. The second night, our platoon got into a bit of a tussle with B Platoon, Company B. Before you knowed it, we had us a regular rhubarb! Nobody got real hurt, and the Col. don't mind, he says it's good to fight, stirs up the blood. I did OK, I really clocked the 1LT of B company. Knocked him right down on his buttocks. The men now call themselves "Bubba's Brawlers." I asked the Sarge if we should stop it, and he said hell no, pardon my language, it is good for the moral. The loss elevated the Braves into second place, ahead of our Cubs. dsvitak Hall Of Famer Join Date: Dec 2002 Posts: 5,450	Dear Mom and Daddy, 4 May 1932 Hey HO! What do ya know? This is Bubba direct from Chicago. I am doing just fine, and hope you two are as well. We are doing fine, in second place. I am 2-3, but have been pitching well as of late. The State of Arkansas sent me a letter, confirming my commision. Thanks Daddy, I am sure your influence as State Representative surely helped. I spoke with the Colonel last night, my Battalion Commander. He doesn't seem too impressed that I am a ball player. He says the only good thing is that I should be fit. I am to be a platoon leader, with 15 men assigned to me. This will be after my training, of course. I have not as of yet met the men, I will at the end of this month. The club has been very understanding. It will be OK to miss a weekend a month, as they can move the pitching rotation around a little bit to deal with it. I should not miss any starts. Daddy, I know the farm is feeling the pinch of this down turn. I sent some money down to Little Rock into our accounts, that should help some. Ella Mae has told me that she has been offered a position at the State College in Little Rock, to teach English. It would mean us having to move away from El Dorado, so I don't know. What do you all think? Her pay would go from $1500 a year up to $3500 a year....and that would be right nice. Daddy, would you, Charly, and Jeb be able to manage the farms if we went up to Little Rock? Let me know quick, if you would.

Schlesinger got another 3 hits, increasing his average up to .341 Fredric Sims smacked a three run home run in the top of the eighth, helping to seal the victory. After the game, the players went out to visit the Falls at Niagara, an event enjoyed by all. This idea, have no little merit, came from Bubba Jones, having visited the Falls earlier this year on his honeymoon.
