The Chicago Blackhawks are in the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive year, and their third time in history. They are trying to win their 2nd Stanley Cup. But it will be tough, as they will have to beat the 112-win Montreal Canadiens, who won their 1st Stanley Cup two years ago. It should be an interesting final.

1934 Conference Finals preview

What a difference a change of cities has made for the Hartford Whalers! As the Atlanta Thrashers, they were non-competitive most of the time. But in their 3rd year in Hartford, after two years of solid, smart rebuilding, the Whalers are arguably the most complete team in the Eastern Conference. They have a core of solid veterans surrounded by young, exciting rookies and sophomores. Their pitching staff is top-notch with a strong bullpen. Most importantly, they can score in a number of different ways. They have power and speed.

In the first two rounds, the Whalers beat their new bitter rivals, the Rangers and the Bruins, each in six games. They will face the Carolina Hurricanes, a team who seems to be in the hunt almost every year, in the Conference Finals.

In the West, the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks are back in the conference finals for the third straight year. They will play the Detroit Red Wings, who upset the top-seeded St. Louis Blues.

What a year it has been for the Hartford Whalers. What was thought to be impossible a mere two years ago has now become a reality. They have won the Eastern Conference and have made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. It didn't look to promising when they dropped the first two games to the Hurricanes at home, but they won four in a row to clinch the conference crown. This is the franchise's 2nd trip to the Finals, when they made it in 1911 as the Thrashers, but lost to the Anaheim Ducks. The Whalers will face the Chicago Blackhawks, who are in the Finals for the 3rd straight year. The Hawks look unbeatable right now, cruising through the Western Conference bracket with a 12-2 record, and they appear to be poised to repeat as champs and capture their 3rd Stanley Cup.

As much as I'm rooting for the Whalers, I think that the Blackhawks will take the series in six games.

It was a great run for the Hartford Whalers, but the Chicago Blackhawks were too much for them as they won their 2nd consecutive Stanley Cup, and 3rd title overall. The 'Hawks steamrolled through the playoffs with a 16-3 record. Chicago has become the sixth franchise to win at least three Stanley Cups.

It happened two times in three years, which was pretty cool.

In 1931, Montreal beat Detroit.
In 1933, Chicago beat Montreal.

Those are the only two times the Stanley Cup Finals featured Original Six matchups.

There are two reasons that I decided to start in 1901. One, because it makes it easy to tell how many years that this league has been functioning. Two, because it would be neat to develop a history in the 1900's before getting into the 2000's.
