Yeah, dealing Jones is not easily doable. That one will be tough. Getting league average pitchers is not actually too difficult, especially via FA. They don't need aces, they need Woody Williams types. Those aren't too tought to come by. As for the thumper, yeah that could be tough, but they do have prospects to deal and they can afford to spend on the FA market. I may have overstated how easy it will be for them to get those types of players, but it wouldn't be too terribly difficuly. As I said, they have money and they have prospects. Those are the two things you need to get quality.

I see Marshall is throwing a 1-hitter through 6 innings. Is this kid for real or what?

Great game for Marshall, despite his four walks. Can the Cub pitchers make it a shut out sweep against this awful Nats team? Wood is on the mound for the first time this year! Let's go Wood!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

...aaaaand Wood gives up two bombs in his first three innings. That's good.

At least our offense is strong enough to compensate for it.

Murton batted second I thought.

I was groggy as hell from my painkillers n ****, so I don't know what happened for a few innings. All I know is this: Wood great first inning, bad rest of the for the most part. Ohman sucks still. Cubs rally, but rally gets killed by Pierre grounding into a double play.. I mean, seriously.. c'mon Pierre. time to move him outta here like someone said. Pie is doing fine where he is. He could use the experience.

Then I woke up through out the rest of the game, boring, until of course the ninth inning, two outs, runners on 1st and 3rd I believe, and it's Neifi who's a genius and decides to try bunting his way on and fails. Game over just like that. Jeez. Way to have faith in your ability Neifi. Don't you know it's easier to get on base by swinging the bat or trying to walk, I know you don't do either of them well, but it has a higher % success rate I imagine.. you ****!

Not really, no. The power is there, which is good, but he also has just 11 walks against 149 at bats and 30 (!) strikeouts. Until he learns to control the strike zone better he's not going to contribute much. He'll be whifftastic if called up now.

Why? He has an OBP of .349. The only two on the active roster with better are Michael Barrett and Todd Walker. Of course, you could bat either one of them second, but Murton's a better choice than, say, Cedeno or Jones or Hairston.

If it was me, at this point I'd probably lead off with Jones, bat Murton second and Barrett third based on how they've hit so far.

Just an FYI. Here is the current line on the much-maligned Jacque Jones:

AVG .273 | HR 7 | RBI 19 | OBP .315 | SLG .488

If he continues at this pace it will be much harder to criticize this signing. Please note, I'm NOT saying Jones is "the answer" but I think he is at least starting to meet expectations.

You are correct. Being a Minnesota native and Cubs fan, I still hate him, however. I've heard enough of him and Torii hunter to last me many many lifetimes.

But at this point, this season is over for us. I really think we need to trade anything of value for some prospects and just let the kids play.

I'd rather see a line up of Ronny Cedeno's lose than a lineup of Neifi Perezs. Lose, that is. At this point, John Mabry shouldn't be playing much. Theriot and Restovich deserve a chance. Unfortunately, we don't have many players ready to make the leap just yet-Patterson 2.0 and Pie are both a year away at least.

Guh. Its ****ing dismal here.

I saw the other day that over the last 22 games, the Cubs were hitting .146 with runners in scoring position.

Woods and Prior are not the answer to this....neither is D. Lee, who is in his 30's, and has 1/2 of a good season in his career.

1/2 of a good season? Are you high? He's had two good seasons (2000 and 2001), three very good seasons (2002-2004) and one MVP type year (2005). I guess getting on base, hitting for power and playing a Gold Glove first base isn't very good in your universe.

Yeah, I think his naysayers will be eating their words soon.

He isn't the answer, but he's doing his bit.

That stat line is not very good. The SLG is decent, but that OBP is just awful. For the money they are paying him they are getting a poor return on their investment thus far. Even worse, considering his track record and his age, there is little reason to expect him to improve.

I guess my point is that his numbers are falling right into line with his career averages. His OBA has always been low. For better or worse, the Cubs ARE getting what they paid for.

Now, if they signed him with the expectation that he would significantly improve on his career numbers, well that's another discussion entirely.

I have two questions..

1) Why is Neifi batting 2nd in the lineup?
2) Why is Neifi on a team?

Also, the Cubs get another player that "helps" the team lose: -12.3 VORP Tony Womack. The Cubs have so many players that are either below or around replacement player value that it's not even funny anymore. To the Cubs '07 Baker-less season:

Who woulda thunk it: the Cubs losing with an OF that includes Murton - Pierre - Jones. Better luck next season Cubbies!
