RWS In Cuba
from the secret memoirs of Ralph Wilson Stanton:
August 26, 1906: Still in Cuba. Things sure are interesting. Heard from "Silver" that the Cuban revolutionaries are drawing sincere support from much of the local populace. The arms the Germans gave them are giving them a chance against the government forces here. Still, it's just a matter of time before Pritchard's bully-boys get here in force, and then the revolution's in trouble. The CS Marines landed yesterday. They sure do look martial - if they fight as well as they march, the insurrectos are done for. "Silver" has a source in Guantanamo. The source says 10,000 men will be here by the start of next week. No way the Cuban insurrectos can stand up to that. I hate to sound vicious, but the sacrifice these brave men are making, will further the worldwide revolution - and it serves notice to the fat cats in Richmond that they're little Latin empire isn't as happy with the status quo as they might think. I'm off to Mexico next. Agent "Bronze" has made contact with PV. Got to keep the pot stirred.

Stuart And His Army Arrive in Cuba
from the Miami Register, September 2, 1906:
The first units of the reported 10,000-man army of Lt. General Robert E.L. Stuart arrived in Havana this morning. According to a military spokesman, "an army of this size will take some time to coalesce. It takes a lot of supplies to support a force this big in the field, and it's all coming from Tampa." Indeed, the horizon off the coast is filled with the ships of the C.S. Navy, including the large battleship CSS Alabama and the new cruiser CSS Franklin Buchanan. The spokesman indicated that the large ships would be capable of providing fire support to any mission along the coast and that the rebels were "lucky that the CSS Virginia doesn't launch til November." The Viriginia is the pet project of President Pritchard - a battleship larger and more powerful than the recent British super-ship, HMS Dreadnought. With the Marines, the Army units already on the island when the rebellion started, and Stuart's force, the Confederacy will have over 15,000 men under arms with which to fight the rebels. According to Stuart's spokesman, "this operation will be over by October 1." Grim news for the self-proclaimed revolutionaries.

U.S. Baseball Report: September 1, 1906
from the Sporting Way, September 4, 1906:
WALTER HAVING A "BALL" IN CHICAGO - Walter "Rabbit" Ball, the pitcher traded from McGraw's Patriots to Spalding's Colts, has been enjoying his new surroundings. Since coming over to the Colts, Ball has been rejuvenated. His record for August with the Colts: 6-2 in eight starts, with six complete games and one shutout and has posted a 2.19 ERA. "I'm just happy to be playing with a manager who isn't always riding me," says the laid-back Ball, referring to McGraw's well-known lack of patience with less-than-perfect performances from his players. The other half of the big deal for Chicago, 19-year-old Ned Monaghan, is getting more regular playing time for the Colts than he did in Philadelphia. He has yet to put up big numbers, but team manager Sol White did say, "The kid's improving. He's got the talent, no question. Pardon the pun, but he's like a colt that just needs to learn to wear the harness." EISENKAMP "COMING ALONG" ACCORDING TO MCGRAW - Hot-shot third basemen Saul Eisenkamp is getting a long look from his mentor, John J. McGraw a former hot corner hot shot himself. "The kid is getting there," says Muggsy. "The numbers will come, he just needs to keep plugging away." So far, in just over 40 games, Eisenkamp has clipped at a .211 average, so there is room for improvement. Luckily for McGraw, he can afford to let the kid get his feet wet as the Patriots have a nice nine-and-a-half game cushion on the Giants - in large part due to the acquisition of Andrew Foster, who's been tearing it up on the mound. REIDY LEADING REDWOODS OUT OF THE FOREST - Sacramento hurler Bill Reidy is having quite a year for himself - 22-6, 1.85 - and has led the Redwoods into first-place, comfortably ahead of San Diego. C.S. Baseball Report: September 1, 1906
from the Confederate Baseball Weekly, September 4, 1906:
REBELS FORCE HAVANA CLUB TO FLORIDA - The fighting in Havana last week caused the Sugar Kings to temporarily relocate to Miami. Strange bedfellows there - the two top teams in the Caribbean League and bitter rivals - sharing the same ballpark. Luckily they weren't (couldn't) be home at the same time. Miami leads the Carib circuit by three-and-a-half over the Sugar Kings, with their consistently outstanding pitching continuing to lead the way. Not that the Superbas don't hit - Elbanco Gutterez leads the league (.348) and John Henry Lloyd is batting .320 - but pitching is the name of the game for Watkins' charges. Havana continues to follow the same formula as Miami - pitching and lots of it - but has enjoyed slightly less success. This is attributable mainly to less hitting. Inocencio Movales is their best hitter at .321, but he doesn't have much support. POPULAR DEVLIN LEADS WASHINGTON - Art Devlin, the 26-year-old third sacker for the Washington Confederates is a popular fellow with his team mates. Aside from hitting .333 (sure to be popular on any team), the witty Devlin keeps his mates amused with antics. "He's a real card," says skipper Hughie Jennings - until recently a team mate as well as skipper (Jennings says he has "retired" from playing). Washington is eight-and-a-half behind the Gears, so the pennant is unlikely, but at least they're having fun in the industrial center of the Potomac valley. Code:

Stuart Gets A Little Help
from the diary of Lt. General R.E.L. Stuart, commanding CS forces in Cuba:
September 9, 1906 - Lt. Beauregard brought in a man claiming to have information on the whereabouts of the Rebels main camp. Naturally, he wanted to be paid for this information. I had him checked out and finally agreed to give him cash. As a gesture of good will, he offered the name of the Rebel leader, Tomas Estrada Palma, and said that he believed that Palma had made a deal with the Germans for arms. This information corroborated what we already knew (having captured Mauser rifles along with the rebels who had been firing them). Palma's name had been gleaned from some of interrogations. September 12, 1906 - Preparations are in place for our assault on the suspected Rebel headquarters. Our "guide" is going with us. Should this prove a trap, he'll find me waiting to dispatch him to wherever it is that duplicitous worms go from this life. September 13, 1906 - After surrounding the area, sent the Marines into the Rebel camp. Total surprise, and victory was ours. We captured Palma and the rest of the ringleaders, a surprisingly large cache of weapons (German-made) and even some women and children (the families of the Rebels). I suspect that this wasn't ALL of the rebel forces, but this rebellion is as good as dead, for the time being (I have a feeling the Cubans will not play nice forever).

Mexican Rendezvous
from the secret memoirs of Ralph Wilson Stanton:
September 30, 1906 - The failure - through treachery - of the revolution in Cuba is very disturbing. Apparently the capitalists' greatest tool - money - persuaded one of Palma's loyalists to flip on him and give the Confederate army all it needed to find and trap Palma's forces. This is not the end of the road, however. There are others in Cuba (and outside it as well) who will help the revolution succeed. On the brighter side, I did this morning meet with the notorious PV. "Bronze" set up the meeting in the hills of southern Sonora, not far from where PV gave the Army fits during the late war. He is an interesting fellow - very confident, though the sting of being captured has, I've heard, dimmed his bravado somewhat. I felt he was ripe for indoctrination - here was a man who embodied the spirit of the exploited masses. If ever a man was born to be a revolutionary, it is this man. I have further meetings set up at which we will discuss the righteousness of Marxism.

The Confederacy Gets Into the Race
from the Richmond Courier, October 1, 1906:
"In the spirit of the gallant men who sailed the first ironclad into battle, the Confederacy announces the construction of a ship bearing the name of said ironclad, which will be the scourge of our enemies and queen of the seas - the CSS Virginia!" So began the ceremony at the Washington Naval Yard over the shell of what will be, in approximately one year, the most advanced warship ever built. Admiral William H. Jackson, the CSA's highest-ranking naval officer spoke the words and looked with pride on the behemoth-in-the-making. She'll be his flagship and he undoubtedly looks forward to prowling the sea lanes, hunting for enemies of the Confederacy. Skeptics in the crowd would point out that the British have their own supership, just recently launched (that would the HMS Dreadnought) and both Germany and the U.S.A. are also constructing these large "battleships" - not to mention that the Japanese and Russians may be doing so as well. It's becoming a game of naval oneupsmanship and no one knows where it will lead. ![]() CSS Virginia - the Confederacy's first Dreadnought.

U.S. Baseball Report: October 1, 1906
from the Sporting Way, October 5, 1906:
MCGRAW FINALLY CAPTURES FLAG - John J. McGraw, manager of the Philadelphia Patriots, has finally accomplished his goal - a pennant of his own. His team, carefully molded in his own image - tough and persistent - steamrolled their way to the Federal League title, finishing sixteen games ahead of Columbia. The Pats were strong in all facets of the game. Hitting? Ask Honus Wagner about his .345 average and 80 runs driven in (both 2nd in the FL). Pitching? "Steel Arm" Johnny Taylor (24-9, 2.13) and running buddy Andrew "Rube" Foster (20-7, 2.39) have that covered. Defensively the team is also solid - Wagner is superb and the Patriots' first baseman, young "Handsome" Hal Chase, is a wizard with the leather. It'll be a tough order for the Pac League titlists to overcome McGraw's juggernaut. SAME OLD STORY IN PAC LEAGUE - Sacramento, you say? Hah. The Conquistadors did it again. The Redwoods floundered down the stretch, and waiting in the wings were Bid McPhee's old pros - the guys who seem to own the Pacific League. The usual suspects did their thing for San Diego - Ginger Beaumont meted out his usual punishment on the moundsmen (.343 average), Joe Tinker snared anything in the general vicinity of shortstop, and "Wild Bill" Donovan put up another 20 win season. The only difference is that "Chick" Robitaille, who could barely crack the staff the previous two seasons, dumped Bill Dineen out of the rotation and put up a solid 19-10, 2.05 ERA for the 'Quistadors. PARADE OF STARS - Al Spalding's leagues got their fair share of outstanding performances this season. Let's take a look. Sam Crawford of Columbia had a heckuva season. "Wahoo" Sam led the league in hitting (.351), drove in 78 and swiped 68 bases for good measure. Danny Green of Oakland had himself a nice little year. Hit .348 to lead the Pacific League and whoa boy did he have a year on the bases! Green's thievery ran up a total of 92 bases. No one crossed home plate more often than Chicago's Harry Lumley. The 26-year-old scored 90 runs and kept his mates laughing with his on and off field shenanigans. His team may have stumbled down the stretch, but take nothing away from Bill Reidy. The Sacramento ace led the league in wins - 25 - and in ERA with a stellar 1.91 mark. He also handed out only 24 walks in over 300 innings - showing incredible control. Walter Ball may have been run out of Philadelphia because of differences with "Muggsy" McGraw, but "Rabbit" did one heckuva job for his new team in Chicago. Ball finished 25-13 and had a 2.85 ERA for the year. He was 11-4 with a sub-2.00 ERA after leaving the Patriots. And even though his team dropped to third-place, warhorse Rube Waddell still led the league in disappointed batsmen, sending a U.S.-best 185 back to the bench on strikeouts. He finished 21-17 for a team with a struggling offense, as evidenced by his strong (Fed-best) ERA of 2.10 Code:

C.S. Baseball Report: October 1, 1906
from the Confederate Baseball Weekly, October 5, 1906:
ST. LOO COPS DIXIE FLAG - The first flag in the history of the Dixie League went to the man most responsible for the league's existence - Clark W. Griffith. Griff's fine ballclub from St. Louis finished with 89 wins - three more than the Louisville - to take the 1906 flag. The Old Fox put together a fine ballclub, with solid hitting and good pitching. The cast of characters: Clark Griffith - the manager and ace pitcher, Griff posted a 19-16, 2.99 ERA for the season. Ellis Meyer - 22-16 for the year with a 2.85 ERA Dave Hughes - 22-14 with a team-best ERA of 2.67 Catcher Johnny "Noisy" Kling led the league with a .352 hitting mark and was the team's offensive spark all season long. Third Baseman Harry Steinfeldt chimed in with a .302 mark and 66 runs batted in and second sacker Carl Nugent surprised with a .295 average and actually finished third in the league in home runs with 5. Shortstop Tim Cox swipped 77 bases, best in the loop despite a very modest .221 batting average. MIAMI CAPTURES CARIBBEAN - The Superbas did indeed live up to their nickname, posting a 91-win season - just enough to keep ahead of the 90-win New Orleans club and the 88 posted by the Havana Sugar Kings, who finished the season sharing the Miami ballpark after their own was damaged by rebels in the late troubles in Cuba. Miami features a fine pitching staff with two of the top three ERA men in the entire league heading the list. "The Lizard" Terciero Aguilar won 26 ballgames with a stellar 1.79 ERA (2nd in the league) and whiffed an incredible 445 batters. Not far behind was his friend Anton Roseldo, who won 20, posted a 3rd-best 1.93 ERA and whiffed over 300 hitters. The hitting side of the ledger was far from barren as manager Pop Watkins found local product John Henry Lloyd to play shortstop. Lloyd posted a .326 average, scored 83 runs, drove in 65 and swiped 35 bases. He also played a superb shortstop and earned such a reputation for brainy play that wags began referring to him as "Young Pop" - in honor of the well-known brilliance of his manager, Mr. Watkins. "Pop" Lloyd wasn't alone, however. He had a friend in catcher Bruce Petway, who hit a robust .260 while playing tremendous defense and serving as the man behind the throne of the twin pitching dynamos. The other big bats belong to a pair of outfielders, Elbanco Gutterez who hit .346 to lead the Carib league, and right fielder Sherman Barton, who rapped out a .296 average. The only question now is: which powerhouse, Miami or St. Louis, will win the first Confederate championship? COBB LEADS PARADE OF PROMISING YOUNGSTERS - Both Confederate leagues feature a wealth of good young stars-to-be. Heading the list is Ty Cobb, the 20-year-old star of the Atlanta Crackers. Cobb hit .333 this season, and was often the lone bright spot in a disappointing season for the Crackers. Other players on the track to stardom are Napoleon Wilde, who spent the season in the minors, but is expected to play a role for the Louisville Gears sometime soon and a pair of pitchers: Birmingham's Chadwick Rooney and Havana's Gonzalo Quezada. Rooney had a solid year for the Brewers, posting a 10-8 record with a 2.59 ERA and 194 strikeouts in 212.1 innings. Quezada shuttled in and out of the Havana bullpen, but posted a 16-13 mark, with a 2.73 ERA and whiffed 196 batters in 257.1 innings. Both are certain to be aces in the near future. There are also rumors of new nuggets unearthed by the scouts, who will debut in the Confederate leagues someday soon. Code:

This has got to be the best dynasty in a long time. I'm a huge history buff & alternate history has always enthralled me. I'm loving this... and I'm a HUGE fan of the confederate league. I've always paid special attention to guys from the South. Noodles Hahn in particular, being from Nashville.
And speaking of which, I sure hope Nashville gets a team someday. |

1906 Postseason Baseball Report
from the Sporting Way, October 15, 1906:
CONQUISTADORS CONQUER MCGRAW-MEN IN THRILLER - The battle-tested veterans of Bid McPhee's San Diego squad downed the favored Philadelphians of John J. McGraw, by a score of 7-2 in thirteen dramatic innings. A five-run burst in the top of the 13th, highlighted by Claude Ritchey's two-run single, was the deciding factor. PATRIOTS KNOT THINGS UP - A second-straight extra-inning affair between the champions of the Federal and Pacific Leagues was played today, but this time it was the Fed champ Patriots who came away victorious. Frank Laporte singled home Chick Stahl with the game-winner in the bottom of the eleventh to tie this best-of-seven series at a game apiece. PATS MAKE IT TWO IN A ROW - For the first time in the 1906 US Baseball Championship, extra frames were not needed to determine the outcome. Philadelphia took the game 4-1 in San Diego as a trio of Pats came up with a pair of hits each. Chick Stahl, George "Chappie" Johnson and young Saul Eisenkamp each came up big for McGraw's Philadelphians. PATS WIN AGAIN, LOOK TO FINISH OFF THE 'QUISTADORS - A third-straight victory by the Philadelphia Patriots has them on the verge of the championship. The final was 5-1 with "Steel Arm" Johnny Taylor throwing a gem of a ballgame. Young Saul Eisenkamp drove in a run on 2-for-4 batting, while "Chappie" Johnson scored a pair for the Patriots. CONQUISTADORS SALVAGE WIN AT HOME TO STAY ALIVE - San Diego, a prideful bunch, staved off ultimate defeat for at least one more game as they defeated the visiting Philadelphia Patriots 5-3. Chick Robitaille's pitching, and a four-run burst in the first inning against "Rube" Foster were the deciding elements in this must-win for the 'Quistadors. LEIFIELD SHUTOUT PITCHES PATS TO TITLE - "Lefty" Leifield tossed a four-hit shutout and Billy Maloney went 3-for-4 with an RBI as the Patriots won their first championship with a decisive 3-0 win in game six of the U.S. Championship series. After the game it was announced by Mr. McGraw that his club had agreed to a short, best-of-three against the Confederate champions beginning next week. from the Confederate Baseball Weekly, October 11, 1906: MIAMI WINS FIRST GAME IN DRAMATIC FASHION - Clark Griffith's St. Louis Steamers seemingly had game one of the Confederacy's championship series in hand when it blew up in their faces. With Griff himself on the mound, the Miami Superbas plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth to steal a 5-4 win from St. Louis. John Henry Lloyd's one-out double drove home Jim Smith with the tying run, and Lloyd scored the game winner when with two outs, batting champ Elbanco Gutterez drove a single up the middle. MIAMI ROLLS TO GAME TWO WIN - The Superbas picked up a second straight win from the Griffmen by a score of 5-1. Pat Patterson and Bill Irvin each had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs to lead the way, while Terciero Aguilar threw a gem, allowing one run on eight hits and striking out 12 for Miami. The series shifts West for three, as needed, on the banks of the Mississippi. IT'S THREE DOWN, ONE TO GO FOR MIAMI - In a shocking display, the Miami Superbas won the third game of the Championship Series, to go up three games to none over the all-white Steamers of St. Louis. It took eleven innings, but Miami got the job done again. The crowd fell silent as John Henry Lloyd belted a Dave Hughes offering into the right field pavilion for two runs and an 8-6 win. The Steamers need a miracle to avoid embarassment. MIAMI SWEEPS THE STEAMERS - 3-2 was the game score, but the bigger number was 4-0, the margin in games of the first Confederate Championship Series. The Miami Superbas took home the first title, scoring when they needed to, and getting excellent pitching. Once again, John Henry Lloyd was at the center of the action, plating two of the three Miami runs with his hot bat. Miami manager Pop Watkins announced after the game that the Superbas would challenge the winner of the U.S. Championship series between San Diego and Philadelphia to a "World Championship" exhibition. from the Sporting Way, October 18, 1906: PHILADELPHIA PATRIOTS STOP THE MIAMI SUPERBAS' RUN - The Miami Superbas, winners of the championship of the Confederacy by dint of their sweep of the Dixie League titlists from St. Louis, ran into a superior team in the Philadelphia Patriots. John J. McGraw's team picked up an 8-4 win behind "Steel Arm" Johnny Taylor. The Pats racked up 12 hits, three by Chappie Johnson and only struck out three times against "Lizard" Aguilar (who had racked up 400-plus in Confederate league play) while plating eight runs against him. IT'S TWO AND DONE FOR THE SUPERBAS - The Philadelphia Patriots made a third game in this exhibition between champions a moot point as they downed Miami 5-2 to sweep this short series. "Rube" Foster silenced the Miami bats, allowing two runs on four hits while "Chappie" Johnson and Chick Stahl each picked up three hits off Anton Roseldo of Miami. After the game, a smiling McGraw offered this assesment: "They're behind us in skill - don't get me wrong, Lloyd, Petway and some of the others are very good ballplayers, but they have holes. It'll be years before the Confederate ballplayers can stand up to best in the U.S."
