His best seasons with New York were worth 7-8 wins above replacement. Bradley was near that level of value in a mere 101 games played during his fine 2003 campaign.

So, basically your argument doesn't hold water, as if when it comes to controversy, a good player is dead weight, but an excellent one, mebbe worth one or two wins more per year, is worth the trouble. Pfft.
Actually, if even the controversy theory is true, we can safely assume the bigger the star, the bigger the controversy from the same kind of incident would be.

Also the bigger the star, the bigger the salary at risk.

Also the bigger the star, the harder to find replacement player in case of anything bad happens.

Actually, the whole volatility idea wouldn't support the theory how bigger stars would be more worth the trouble, unless a team is horrible at accounting for the risks.

A's now 4-2 and leading the AL West despite batting .212 as a team. Impressive.

Harden is so good you can't jinx him. Although if someone gets a cheap single with 2 out in the ninth them you can all yell at me.

This is where I don't necessarily trust the defensive components of WARP. Jackson's 1980 and 1974 seasons are almost exactly equivalent at the plate, with a slight edge to 1980. I find it hard to believe that he was really nearly two games less effective on defense in 1980, even while playing 33 fewer games in the field.

The A's lineup is currently ranked 33210 on ESPN's Baseball Challenge.

Is it too soon to start the Dan Johnson Hit Watch? This reminds me of Chucky Thomas from last year..

Actually, because he played more in '74, he's valued at one more equivalent run.

It's not only defense. Replacement values are quite different for RF and DH.

Ahhhhh.

That explains it. Imagine if he'd been a DH all season instead of only a quarter of it. Steinbrenner'd be asking for a refund of his salary.

Hardly, as I don't believe Hafner or Ortiz's respective employers are currently unsatisfied. Does playing DH fulltime reduce their value, say compared to a Yankees third sacker? Sure.

The Chronicle said he will likely sit today, which should be OK. He played really well in Minnesota last year in front of his friends and family so hopefully that's where he gets his first hit.

I hate my cable company. I have the Braves and Giants on both TBS and FSN but no A's game.

Digital cable is still showing the MLB Extra Innings free preview here so I have the Mariners broadcast.
