Jon Schaeffer

Short on time tonight, Amazin', but you covered the highlights already. In any case, here's Jon Schaeffer.

Thanks. Appreciate your making the time.

(I don't much appreciate the board trying to "correct" my grammar and thinking "Appreciate you making the time" is proper, though. Pronoun-gerund agreement, you buffoons. Learn it, live it, love it. [/pedantry])

The Twins are also thinking about making time for Ryan Lane, as neither Denny Hocking nor Brent Gates nor Corey Koskie has anything resembling a shortstop's range. And, given the Astroturf in the Homerdome, that could mean a lot of balls zipping through the hole.

Lane missed most of 1998 with an injury, but he put in a couple of good weeks rehabbing in the GCL and he's ready to go. IRL, they sent him back to AA New Britain and then flipped him to the Rangers at mid-season, where he put in a good year and a half as a Tulsa Driller, albeit mostly in the OF. Then he struggled for Oakland's AAA team in Sacramento in '01 and hung 'em up.

Maybe he can brow-beat Tom Kelly into giving him a shot?

(I had no idea that the 1996 New Britain Rock Cats were formally known as "Hardware City". Thank goodness that didn't catch on. I don't need "Queen City" v. "Gateway City" matchups, I'm saying.)

Frank "Creepy" Crespi

Cardinals infielder Frank "Creepy" Crespi was born on Feb. 16, 1918. He was considered one of the most promising second base prospects in the league in 1941 when he hit .279 and scored 85 runs. But he entered the service during World War II and broke his leg once playing service ball and again when he rammed his wheelchair into a wall. He never played in the majors again. - stltoday.com

So, clarkmi1, it looks like someone gave him some color in the last CUFacepack but I still did him over.

I Smella Ratta

Speaking of South Alabama, Pete Della Ratta was the Oakland A's 30th-round pick after his career with the Jaguars and made good progress through the chain, before stumbling in his late-season call-up to AA Huntsville last season.

Acquired by the Mets in the off-season, he's being considered for a bullpen role, although he looks more likely to be successful at Binghamton, as he was in OTL. But he couldn't get promoted any higher, and his next two seasons with the B-Mets were b-rutal. But he'll always have Visalia, or something.

Pete Della Ratta

Pete Della Ratta is a former minor league baseball player who now teachers Physical Education at Woodlawn Beach Middle School in Gulf Breeze, Florida. He includes fishing into the program and takes his students to Shoreline Park to learn how.

I'd rather see him show the kids how to pitch but how to throw a net in the ocean is a fine use of youtube too, I suppose. As requested for Amazin'.

I'm still using the fg's from OOTP22 so I didn't have the version with better color. You captured his likeness better anyway. Much appreciated.

Thanks for Della Ratta. (A pity he never made it to the Show; you know he would have been a fan favorite. Or at least a Gary Cohen favorite, just for the name.)

Meanwhile, the Phillies are thinking about adding a young lefty to the starting staff, and they're considering Greg Kubes. The Sam Houston State product (their #14 draft pick) had a nice summer at Batavia, and they do want to fast-track him, since he's already 22, but jumping all the way up seems precipitous.

IRL, Kubes worked his way up the chain, had a good year at AA Reading, but was only mediocre in two subsequent seasons at Scranton. And before he knew it, he was 28, which is pushing it even for a lefty.

Greg Kubes

This was a tougher one than I thought it would be, Amazin'. Finally, I got to a point where I was satisfied with a result that I got from closing the mouth on the smiling picture and running with that. It's not great but better than the result I got with the shadow picture. He does look dourer than I'd like for someone that might finally get his shot, but the game will make him smile when the time comes.

Is there any way to compress the KB in a portrait? I have some that I made off of official College photos and they are over 510kbs.
