Just returned home from Lincoln NE today after checking on Big Red's stable and also took some time off and watched the annual Spring football scrimmage while I was up there. Now that I'm back home and have a computer in front of me, I'd like to announce the fights that were signed this month for Big Red Promotions.

Sam Langford, Canada, 1-0-0 (1) versus Jean-Claude Roy, Canada, 4-1-0

Courage Tshabalala, South Africa, 1-0-0 (1) versus Alani Aremu, Nigeria, 0-3-0

Cassius Clay, USA, 1-0-0 (1) versus Kenny Snow, 6-0-0

Danny McAlinden, Northern Ireland, 1-0-0 (1) vs. Alex Woods, Northern Ireland, 0-1-0

Belfast Holiday Inn, Belfast, Northern Ireland. ‘Dangerous’ Danny McAlinden comes home to make his European debut after having a smashing success in the states. Woods is putting on a tougher than expected fight as McAlinden is struggling to get a rhythm in this fight. Woods opens a cut above the right eye of McAlinden, here in the 4th. Woods lands a spectacular hook to the head of McAlinden that sends him backwards to the floor! The fight is over. Alex Woods wins and evens his record with a spectacular knockout in the 4th of a scheduled ten round fight here in Belfast.

Winner: Woods
Result: (KO4)

Punch stats: McAlinden 110-220, 50% - Woods 88-220, 40%

Peter Jackson, Australia, 1-0-0 (1) vs. Guy ‘Arc Angel’ Waters, Australia, 4-0-1 (2)

Bear Garden, London, England. The undefeated ‘Arc Angel’ Waters suffers a cut in the first round, but it doesn’t affect his aggressiveness as his work rate allows him to take the 2nd and 3rd rounds. The 4th is the best of the fight as both fighters exchange shots. I have it 2-2, after four. Jackson really opens up in the fifth as Waters takes a large amount of punishment. Waters hits the canvas after receiving a huge cross in the 6th. An uppercut all but seals the deal as Waters is able to get up at the count of nine but the ref doesn’t allow the fight to continue.

Winner: Jackson
Result: (TKO7)
Cards: 58-55, on all three cards in favor of Jackson
Punch stats: Jackson 202-436, 46.3% - Waters 103-375, 27.5%

Oh...NOO!!! Was it the back and forth time change, or maybe it was arriving back home to the Irish beer, bar chums, and lasses? I think he was missing out on that good sparring with Tyson and Sullivan. It definitely wasn't mismanagement in opponent selection by East Coast Gladiators.

Just like Ricky Hatton, loves them pubs! Woods was just letting it loose in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Then all of a sudden, he just dropped Mac with a shot and I couldn't believe that he didn't get up. Two tough fights for Mac so far.

CABO Title Fight - February 28, 1980

Troy Ross, Guyana, 10-0-0 (9) vs. Roddy MacDonald, Canada, 10-1-0 (10)

Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Georgetown, Guyana. Troy Ross and his management team decide to have the CABO Title Fight here in Ross’ native country of Guyana. Ross, who now resides in Toronto, ON, Canada, could have chosen to have the fight in Canada, but felt that MacDonald would be at a greater disadvantage here in Guyana. MacDonald has fought all eleven of his fights within the borders of Canada, suffering only one defeat (SD10) to Jimmy Gradson on 1978-11-14. Since that defeat, MacDonald has rolled off six consecutive victories, (1KO, 5TKO). Ross is undefeated, winning his last fight (KO4) vs. Carlos Gomes, 1979-12-29. MacDonald starts off the 1st like a bat out of hell and hurts Ross with a combination. Ross counters and wobbles MacDonald with some sledgehammer punches. MacDonald closes out the round with a flurry. What a great round! The fans are on their feet showing their appreciation for the great boxing action. The second round is just a continuation of what we saw in the opening round. Both fighters showed up ready to go to battle tonight. These rounds are going to be very difficult to score. The third brings a second foul warning to MacDonald and one for Ross. MacDonald slowed down in the 3rd and was more interested in holding than hitting. The 4th is clearly all MacDonald, as he decides to forget the strategy of the last round and lands clean and effective punches for three full minutes. The 5th is a complete opposite of the last round, with Ross doing all the effective boxing. The ground shakes in the 8th as Ross hit’s the ground from a well-timed uppercut from MacDonald. Ross took the 6th and 7th, but with the two point round for MacDonald in the 8th, this fight is too close to call. The 9th and 10th definitely belong to MacDonald, as Ross starts to bleed from a cut that appears to be inside of his mouth. We thought that the heat and humidity might have a negative effect on the Canadian, but it looks as though Ross is the one that is struggling with fatigue and is breathing heavily through his mouth. Ross rebounds in the 11th, with a round that he needed to have if he has any chance at a decision victory. This fight is too close although I do believe that Roddy MacDonald is winning the fight going into the last round. Not much action in the last round, but I would give it to MacDonald. I believe that the knockdown is going to be the difference. We go to the judges.

Winner: N/A
Result: (MDraw12)
Cards: 115-113 Ross, 114-114, 114-114
Punch stats: Ross 202-737, 27.4% - MacDonald 225-654, 34.4%

Sonny Liston, USA, 1-0-0 (1) vs. Marvin Camel, USA, 5-0-0 (4)

Bear Garden, London, England. Odd rounds are being dominated by Camel and the even by Liston as we head to the 4th. Camel’s ring experience is showing as he is able to get away from Liston’s power and connects from the outside. Camel is circling around to avoid the big right hand, ducking in and out, peppering shots and causing swelling under Liston’s left eye at the end of the 5th. Round 6 is another big round for Camel as Liston looks frustrated and tired. Liston is just unable to cut off the ring and is reacting instead of being the aggressor. At the end of the 8th, the fight is close but I have Camel ahead. Liston looks like he is outclassed by the more experience fighter tonight. Liston’s management may have put him in too tough tonight, especially with the long flight across the pond to fight here in the UK. Not much action in the 9th as both fighters are either tired or are saving it up for the 10th and final round. I have Marvin Camel remaining undefeated with a unanimous decision victory tonight over Sonny Liston. We will have to see how the ringside judges have the fight scored.

Winner: Camel
Result: (SD10)
Cards: 97-95 Camel, 96-95 Liston, 97-94 Camel
Punch stats: Liston 162-689, 23.5% - Camel 321-652, 49.2%
TPE: 0
Streak: L1

I really was surprised, I thought it was even more one-sided than the judges had it. Liston never really mounted any sort of attack and it actually felt like I was watching a fighter with only one fight under his belt, taking on a more experienced (even though it was only four more fights) fighter. I guess if you could call any loss a good loss, then that fight was probably it.

Here is a funny Grimsley story. I was at Tootsies in Miami for Mayweather/Judah. It's an upscale strip club and we were up in the VIP's. My boy leans over and says the guy next to us says he fought George Foreman.

I introduced myself and he said he was Crawford Grimsley. Just flexing my Boxing knowledge and quite hammered I respond with I saw you fight Jimmy thunder on TNF.

I was instantly ashamed for saying it and his face went red. I didn't mean anything by it and he knew it. Very cool guy, we talked in between lap dances for the whole card.
