Murphy would have to be the Ace, with Dodge and Smith #2A and #2B. Presto and Gindler round it out.
Not a bad rotation of sorts though, don't you think? And creed, if you don't want Flamingo, I wouldn't mind having grandpa on my team! |

WEB PAGES UPDATED...
May 1948 Detroit went 6-7 to finish the month of May. Meanwhile, the Browns went 11-4 and have moved into 2nd place, just 3.5 games back. The Red Sox are 5 games back, and the surprising Yankees, led by Chief Harrington, are 5.5 games back and above .500 for the first time in possibly over a decade. The Cardinals seem more and more like the team to beat in the NL. Their offense continues its incredible play, and they have surpassed Detroit as the top offense in the majors. Their pitching staff still has some question marks, but young Rock Charnley certainly is not one of them. He is currently 10-1 with a 3.13 ERA. This after winning 20 games as a rookie last season. A's outfielder Peaches Badeau "cooled off" to a .420 average after hitting .200 over his past 4 games. However, he hit .520 last week and shows no real signs of slowing down. He is undoubtedly one of the best pure hitters in the game. He won a batting title last season with a .397 average and a .382 average in 1945 won him his first batting title. Tigers pitcher Billy Crowell continues his outstanding play and is the overwhelming leader in the early season POY race. He went 6-1 and won POTM in May to improve his record to 12-2 on the season. Plus he is the only pitcher with a sub-2.00 ERA in eaither league. Also, Phillies third baseman Maurice Misisca is on an early pace to hit 51 homeruns. Boston's Ken Chaucer is on pace to hit 49 despite hitting in cavernous Braves Field. In The News May 27: Recently retired slugger Oscar Vancini bought an interest in the Cleveland club, becoming the Indians 2nd-largest stockholder. May 31: Cubs outfielder Cliff Wynne hit 2 home runs in a 6-5 win over the Giants. His first shot off Tom Zonneveld came in the 2nd inning. The ball was hit to the right of the Wrigley Field scoreboard, landed on Sheffield Avenue, bounced off a building and allegedly landed on the hood of a southbound car. American League-Pitcher of the Month: Billy Crowell (DET)! He had a record of 6-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.03. American League-Batter of the Month: Matt "The Whale" Perly (DET)! He batted .402 in 102 AB, with 4 homers and 31 RBI. National League-Pitcher of the Month: Henry Cavalluzzo (BSN)! He had a record of 5-1 in 7 games started, with an ERA of 2.16 and 2 shutouts. National League-Batter of the Month: Ike Walker (PIT)! He batted .347 in 98 AB, with 6 homers and 33 RBI. Code:

Here's a kid who was thrown to the wolves during World War II, kicked around AAA for a couple of years after the war, and then suddenly broke out with numbers like this after doing nothing to suggest they were a possibility, much less a likelihood. And he's still only 23...

Cognac still a disgrace to the Allen clan hitting .235 in A ball!!
Tequila raised his avg to .295 by htting .322 in May Jr has made it to the BIG SHOW. 5 games in MAy 7.1 IP 0-1 but a very respectable 2.31 ERA after being over 7 in AAA

Hey all. Dropping a line as the new Cubs owner. Take a look at the web page and a news story under 'League Banter' regarding waves I tried to create... There're definitely another couple of potential surprises in the works. Walter Davis definitely intrigues me but OF is just too congested at the moment for him to be much more than a very spot starter, still trying to decide what to do with him. jdw suggested dropping him back to AAA and teaching him 1B.. I thought about SS..

Whups, shoulda guessed that Chip Sinton was an 'ancestor'.. somehow missed him in my first runthrough of the last couple of seasons. Anyhow, I'd like to apologize if my characterization of him in a 'radio interview' on the TWB site wasn't enjoyed by his 'descendant'.

June 15, 1948
The Tigers went 11-3 to open up the month of June, increasing their lead to 7.5 over the Red Sox. The Browns struggled and dipped to 3rd place, 9.5 games back. The Yankees fell back below .500, but they are still playing hard and in 4th place. The White Sox have dipped all the way down to last place. The Cardinals went 9-5, maintaining their NL lead, but the Phillies gained a game by going 10-4. With the Dodgers struggling, the Phils moved into 2nd place. Meanwhile, the Reds fell to .500. This season's non-waiver trading deadline saw a lot of deals. One of the biggest trades saw the A's ship three pitchers, Chubby Allen, Jeronimo Arsenault and Rod Chiswick, to the Cubs for top notch outfield prospect Chip "Mr. One Million" Sinton. The move was chastised in the Philadelphia press, but the team is standing by the move citing the fabulous reports turned in on Sinton by their minor league scouts. In another big move, long time Cub Dewey Mickelsen was traded to the Reds for young third baseman Buck "Go Go" Tomlinson. The Cubs believe they got a great pickup in Tomlinson, who is expected to develop into a power hitter as he matures. The Reds get a talented, but aging Mickelsen, who is 5th all-time with 334 career homeruns. In The News June 2: The Indians retired an ailing Whiskey Allen's No. 9 jersey. After the ceremonies the Indians beat the Red Sox 5-2. June 12: The Detroit Tigers beat the St. Louis Browns 13-5 before a crowd of 54,480 in the first night game at Briggs Stadium. The Tigers were the last AL team to install lights. Code:

The A's: Philadelphia's Team! For Immediate Release Savannah, GA. New A's prospect Chip Sinton spent the morning helping out in the Savannah Nursing Home where many of the residents are old and infirm. "I've done this for a long time, at least since last week when I was traded to the A's," said Mr. Sinton. "Great employer, the A's." "Mr. Sinton is a fine young man," stated Salvatore Rossi, the A's revered manager. "He has come under some unfair attacks just because reporters--yes, reporters--have unfairly tagged him with the nickname 'Mr. 1 Million.' I'll have you know that just last week, when Mr. Sinton visited my home, he mowed the front yard without my even asking. What a great young man. Very unselfish. Reporters! Baa! They always get it wrong." Last edited by BPS; 11-09-2004 at 06:59 PM. |

I'd teach my so-so SS to play 3B (such as Chipper), or RF and CF to play LF, or poor young LF to play 1B to get their bat in the line-up in less stressful positions. But teaching Mac to play SS just struck me as a cheat even I wouldn't try. I don't think Davis at 5/6/4/7 hits enough for a 1B. I think he is sadly a player who got trashed by the OOTP developmental curve. There's no way in hell a 1-1 draft pick in 1946 who is a *LF* should sink to "talent" of that level that fast. I know we like to think that 1st Round Picks have a shot of not developing, but the #1 pick overall, a season before the Real GMs take over... this is a friggin killer. Here was the blurb on him getting drafted: Walter Davis, LF, Chicago Cubs Walter was the most sought after prospect this offseason and he was quickly signed by the Cubs. Under baseball's new bonus player rule, Davis, who was given a bonus of over $100,000, must be added to the Cubs' 40-man roster by opening day of next season. He has the potential to be an incredible hitter, with the ability to hit for high average, draw walks and the power to hit doubles and homeruns. He is also a solid defender. He easily becomes the club's top prospect, and the Cubs hope he can help soften the eventual loss of rightfielder Dewey Mickelsen. Hit for high average... and he's down to a 5 in potential. Draw walks, and he's a 7.FWIW, he wasn't on the Cubs 40 man roster for long - no games player in the Majors until June of this year. And he did hit well in A ball in 1946 - .302/.402/.490 with nice power and a nice eye. I don't know what happened to him since. Someone with experiance with OOTP 6 can maybe say something about whether the Talent has a shot of going up "naturally" and whether someone like Davis has another layer of "hidden" potential that we're not seeing. Morris Lutske got hurt! Oh, the humanity!
First injury of his career I think, and it will keep him out of the lineup for the next sim cycle. At .360, the Sox will be missing his offense, I would think. Sox also getting a great start from Alter Sennelnekoff. 7 IP, 1 ER, only 2 hits! Quite a ML debut! Hopefully this is a portent of things to come. Hey Matt, Morris at #9 on the career batting average list. DO you know how many of the 8 above him are ancestors? I forget, but I think Haymaker Cohan was an ancestor...might be wrong about that. Hey, I was just looking at some career leaders. Can anyone explain what the heck happened to Ping Hung? From 1938-1941, it looks like he was injured every year, or benched or something. Que pasa? The guy should have close to 3,000 hits by now.

Yeah, I've been convinced to not push Davis to anywhere other than 1B at most.. I'm hoping not to need to since I now have Tomlinson who can fit at either 1B or 3B and probably will focus on the best available 1B/3B/SS in the next draft. Instead, I may drop Davis back down and teach him the other OF positions, making him the major backup to all three spots and playing him liberally, especially in CF next season. Thing is, making him a 1B really doesn't help much unless he does indeed gain a talent bump in the future. Definitely will have to sit down this weekend if not sooner and hammer out a long term plan for Davis and the infield. The one thing these two trades did was increase focus for me. My pitchers are probably set for a few years assuming good development by Liebermann (and he's the poster child for anyone hoping Davis blossoms.. from 3.0 to 5.0 prospect in one sim) and Caffee. Probably will need to hunt down a new closer in a year or two, but for now I'm set there. I'm happy with my OF and if Davis regains what the scouts thought he had I'll be ecstatic. So that leaves the infield to focus on now.
