2015 Mets World Series Portraits
I wish they'd used the pinstripes; I really hate this particular uniform. Still, really big pictures. Multiple shots of most of them (lots of shots of them from the back for some reason). And the Clippard is useful since he wasn't around for long.
Add your own background, as I've done here with Michael Conforto. (Yeah, yeah...road uniform, home park. I really don't care.) Last edited by FatJack; 02-19-2016 at 04:08 PM. |

Two more gone too soon.
Tony Phillips, who played for the A's (twice), Angels (twice), White Sox, Blue Jays, Tigers and Mets, passed away Wednesday at just 56. Jim Davenport, who played 13 seasons for the Giants and managed them for a bit in 1985, passed away yesterday. He was 82. |

Some seldom seen Braves in the pinstripes they did not start wearing until the 1968 regular season. Team issues. Top to bottom: Skip Guinn, Mike Page, Sandy Valdespino, Al Santorini, Marty Martinez.

Jim Davenport Memories
Growing up in San Francisco, I remember the excitement of the Giants moving here from New York. Living within just two blocks of Seals Stadium I was fortunate enough to spend the summer "hanging out" at the ballpark. One of the joys from this period was playing catch with the likes of Jim Davenport, Daryl Spencer, Hobie Landrith, Don Taussig, and Jackie Brandt from both inside and outside the stadium. All the players were so approachable in those days and a living dream for an 11 year old fan. Davenport and Hank Sauer even came to our Little League practice and gave us tips on hitting and fielding. You just don't see that occurring anymore. OK back to picture posting fellas and thanks for the momentary indulgence of an aging Giants fanatic.

Warren Bowman and George Moll were very close business associates from the late 1930s to mid-1950s. Moll operated an advertising agency that employed 12 professional artists that did all the artwork for the Bowman brand. The lead (senior) artist was Charlie Steinbacher. Among those known artists were Tom King. Gerry Dvorak, who painted many of the 1953 Topps set, was a free lancer who also worked on the Bowmans. He was the artist for the 1952 Mantle, later selling limited edition prints signed by he and Mantle. |

![]() There are any number of software programs that will "cartoonize" photographs. Heck, Topps does this with their Gypsy Queen and Ginters. You can try some of them on-line for free, though the image you generate there likely won't be large enough to use (they're selling a product, after all). To find one that delivers the precise style you're looking for is probably going to be a matter of trial and error (unless someone else has already stumbled across the winning one). |

All Topps Vault Folders Available Again
Thanks galore to John, the man behind the late, great baseball-birthdays site, for providing a OneDrive site for the known Topps Vault images.
His initial posting was missing several folders he did not personally save, but was gracious enough to include them when we provided them to him. So the OneDrive (linked below) now includes Folders FG, FM, FP, FS, FY, FZ, low-numbers from GC, GK, GL, GM, GN, HS, HT, HU, HV, HW, HX, HY, HZ, JA, JB and JC. Also, first the first time anywhere, Folder FK is included. It has 100 color images, many which have appeared on 60s-era cards, and 40 B&W images, many of them eventually colorized for a number of sets. The checklist is still missing a few B&W IDs. One of them is below. ONE DRIVE FOLDER FOLDER FK CHECKLIST |

Randy Heflin 1945
Randy Heflin in a uniform that I can't date. Heflin was in the Red Sox organization from 1939 through 1947, missing '43-'44 to service in the Navy and playing with the Sox in '45 and '46. The left sleeve patch does not appear to be, at least to my eye, the 1945 American Flag shield patch, nor does it appear to be a 1946 All Star game patch. Does anyone recognize the sleeve patch? (The player scan predates my keeping track of original poster credits, the All Star Game sleeve patch image (which doesn't look to me to be historical) comes from an Amazon offer, and the flag shield patch image comes from Discount Display Cases. Dressed to the Nines doesn't show a sleeve patch for the '46 uniform). Maybe it's a Ruptured Duck (image from Borchert Field) with the flag shield on his right sleeve?

Brock Pemberton, who had a few brief cups of coffee with the Mets in the 70s, passed away on February 17. A first baseman, Brock debuted in the majors at 20 years old. He seemed to be a decent line drive hitter and his doubles might have turned into home runs in time. Maybe not. Either way, he was out of baseball entirely before turning 27--and that includes a year he didn't play, a year in independent ball, and his final year as a player/manager (also with an independent team).
The best image of Brock most of us has ever seen is the third one down in this post from Merkle a couple of years ago. I remember well the Mets kiddie corps from the 70s--Brock, Lute Barnes, Rich Puig, Roy Staiger, Bruce Boisclair, to name a few. It was abundantly clear that these guys were not going to be in the same class as Singleton, Jorgensen and Foli. But I loved them anyway. My general philosophy back then (and not much different now): if you're going to suck, suck with the kids. Yeah, I know...we made the Series in '73. But, as inspiring as the whole "Ya Gotta Believe!" thing was, I don't think any Mets fans were fooled into thinking we had a championship team anymore. What we didn't realize--or at least I didn't--was that it was going to get worse. Oh, so much worse. A lot of Mets fans I know think the Sandy Alderson years (prior to 2015) were the Mets nadir. And, geez, I honestly don't know how anyone anywhere could think that, let alone say it--not if they endured that stretch from '73 to '86. Sandy came in with a plan and I knew immediately that the train was back on the right track. There was no such hope in that decade of despair. Once Mrs. Payson passed in 1975, there was no hope no how. But I never blamed the kids for that. Me, I'd rather lose with Lute Barnes than with Luis Castillo any day. Just sayin'. Sorry for the rant. It just made me sad that Brock is gone. |

Jim Gentile 1957
The great home run hitter of the '60s had what was probably the unique experience of being traded by a team while he was leading the league in homers.
When Gentile was sent by the A's to Houston on June 4, 1965, he had hit 10 blasts in his first 38 games - good for a tie with Rocky Colavito, Tony Conigliaro, Willie Horton, Frank Howard, and Lee Thomas, for first in the American League. As it turned out, at least from Kansas City's viewpoint this might have been the best timed trade in history. Gentile would hit only 17 more Major League homers. There aren't a lot of clean images of him in a K.C. uniform. Here's one: Last edited by Merkle923; 08-03-2017 at 12:17 AM. |

Dick Williams in Yankee uniform
Williams was signed as the new Yankee manager in 1973 but Finley blocked it. Later Finley allowed him to sign with any other team except the Yankees.

Pete Broberg Senators
Does any have a color image of Pete Broberg with the Senators in 1971? Besides the airbrushed '72 Topps card, all I've seen is a B&W team issue. Does not have to be TV, just bigger than a thumbnail. Thanks in advance.
