Currently still in TBCB 2.0
Lightweights sent into a free for all!!!!
October 8, 1912 Title Fights LW - Willie Fitzgerald (12/CH) (23-2-4) scores a nice upset with a TKO9 over Young Griffo (CH/6) (40-9-7) to win the WBO LW title and send the LW division into a mess. Griffo's WBC and IBF title were not on the line so by the rules of the LBA both titles will now have a tourney. Which means the top 16 LW's are tied up for the next two months. Attell (the WBA champ) and Fitzgerald should have a couple of easy defenses. Fitzgerald was landing the harder punches in this fight and cut Griffo over the right eye in the 4th round. It was reopened 3 times before the ring doctor finally signaled to the ref to stop the fight. Griffo was leading on my card 77-75 at the stopage but had lost the last two rounds. Other Fights FW - Jem Driscoll (4/4) (45-8-1) UD10 Will Curley (13/17) (23-12-3) 99-91 (Driscoll is contemplating a leap to LW to join one of the title tournies) HW - John Heenan (3/3) (31-9-1) KO7 George Godfrey (41/52) (34-18-3) (Godfrey at post) HW - Jack Marks (101/65) (14-16-1) TKO2 Charley Mitchell (38/77) (32-15-8) (TKO due to injury) MW Jimmy Handler (18/9) (17-14-3) KO8 Frank Craig (48/56) (30-16-2) (Craig at post - too bad Craig won this when simmed with 2.5) Fly Tancy Lee (UR) (8-0-1) UD8 Curley Osborne (UR) (8-2) 80-71 (both at pre for this club fight) |

Things will change because of 6 other LW fights left to go on the cards and Driscoll might move up but as of now he'd be a 5 seed facing Dave Holly in the first round. |

Title Bout BW - Charles Ledoux (10/5) (21-2) came from behind to win a UD12 over Kid Williams (18/24) (14-2) (pre) to retain the EBU BW title for the 3rd time. Ledoux was knocked down in the 9th and appeared to be pretty far behind on all score cards. The champ battled back winning the final 3 rounds including scoring a knockdown in the 12th and final round. I had it 114-112 as did one of the official judges, the other two had it 115-111 and 114-113. Other fights HW - Joe Goss (16/10) (29-6-5) UD10 Ed Dunkhorst (40/56) (28-19-3) Goss has never fought for a title ... inching closer though WW - Dick Nelson (34/26) (20-8) UD10 Philadelphia Tommy Ryan (44/52) (14-11-1) FW - George Chaney (UR/14) (13-0-2) KO6 Whitey Chadwick (91/94) (14-11-1) 49-45 Chaney at the stoppage (chaney at pre) HW - Jack O'Brien (29/28) (31-8-2) UD10 Billy Clark (85/97) (16-6-1) HW - Fighting Dick Gilbert (UR) (6-0-2) SD8 Gunner White (club) (8-25-4) 77-76 Gilbert (Gilbert at pre .... was supposed to be Tompkin Gilbert in this fight so Fighting Dick fought twice this month. Commissioner fault! He will sit out next month.) |

LHW - 5 rated Fred Russell continues to be a bit of a giant killer in the LBA. He just defeated Leo Houck to go to 24-9.
He also holds wins over Jack Dempsey NP and Bob McAllister also. |

Title Fight LHW - Jack Dempsey (CH) (45-7) scored a KO11 over George Byers (14/17) (20-12-1) for his first defense of the WBC LHW title. Dempsey dominated the fight dropping Byers in the 9th and the 11th. I had it 98-91 at the stoppage. Title Tourney LHW - Fred Russell (3/3) (24-9) got another big win with a UD12 over Leo Houck (5/7) (30-13-3) and will advance to the finals of the WBA LHW tourney. He will face the winner of Jack Dillon and Bob McAllister which is scheduled for next month. Russell took control of the fight in the 6th when he knocked Houck down. He won the rest of the rounds and dropped Houck again in the 12th. I had it 117-109, the official judges had it 115-111/118-108/117-109. Other fights WW - Tom McAlpine (28/20) (21-5) KO10 Young Sammy Smith (59/62) (13-12-3) HW - Joe Jeannette (13/9) (27-5) KO2 Tom Allen (36/42) (29-16-1) |

Bob is starting to look like he may earn the title of "Best LHW never to win a world title" in the LBA. At 21-3, he is 0-2 in world title fights. Losing to the aforementions Russell and to Jack Dillon, both of who would stand in his way to winning the tourney!
He does have the USBA regional title though. |

Title Fights LW - Kid Frederick (16/12) (18-1-2) scored a UD12 over Knockout Brown (11/16) (18-2-1) for his 4th defense of the USBA LW title. This was a rematch of a fight two months ago that ended in a Tech Draw. Fredericks fought at prime this time and dominated the fight. He dropped Brown 4 times. Brown showed a lot of heart though as he kept getting up. he was down twice in the 6th only to come back and win the 7th and 8th. In the end Brown was just too one-dimensional. I had it 117-108 while the official judges saw it 115-109/117-108/117-107. BW - Nunc Wallace (17/15) (20-8-2) scored an easy UD12 over Jimmy Anthony (41/43) (14-9-5) for his 3rd defense of the CBU BW title. Wallace dominated the fight and dropped Anthony twice in the 11th but couldn't finish him off. I had it 118-108, while the official judges had it 119-107/119-106/119-108. Other fights BW - Billy Plimmer (8/5) (28-16-6) UD10 Joe Russell (65/66) (9-6-1) (russell at pre) LH - Tommy Gibbons (UR) (12-0) UD10 Fred Hicks (58/61) (9-5-2) 98-92 (both at pre) MW - Bob Moha (33/28) (19-6-6) UD10 Pete McCoy (86/91) (23-25-1) (McCoy at post) HW - Mike Comiskey (UR) (11-0) UD10 Jack Rowan (50/74??) (14-5-1) 96-93 (both fighters at pre in a foul plagued bout) |

Title Fight FW - Solly Smith (3/CH) (28-17-4) scored a TKO14 over Johnny Kilbane (2/4) (24-4-2) to win the vacant IBF FW title. Smith cut Kilbane over the right eye in the 5th and after it was reopened three times and worsened twice the referee finally stopped the fight in the 14th round. Kilbane had a slight lead and had knocked Smith down in the 13th but the cut was just too bad to allow to continue. Kilbane filed a protest which was immediately shot down ... the commissioner (me) told Kilbane that when you can house a small Korean family inside the cut, then the ref did the right thing to stop it. I had it 125-124 at the stoppage ... the official judges saw it 125-123/125-123/124-124. Close fight. Smith wins his second title, he had won the WBC title back in 1907 with a UD15 over Abe Attell only to lose it to Aurelio Herrera in his next fight by TKO12.Title Tourney MW - Billy Papke (3/1) (28-5) totally outclassed pre-prime William Sheriff (5/6) (17-1) en route to a TKO8. Papke won every second of the fight and dropped Sheriff in the 4th, 6th and 8th. Sheriff (rolled a 30) was pre-prime for the fight. Papke will fight for the WBO MW title in February 1913 against the winner of next months fight between Jeff Clarke and George Chip. I had it 70-61 at the stoppage. Other fights LW - Jim Mitchell (35/35) (27-23-5) DRAW10 Jimmy Carroll (57/54) (25-17-5) (mitchell at post) Carroll misses an easy opportunity to jump in the rankings HW - Peter Jackson (2/2) (40-8-2) TKO5 Oscar Mortimer (143/146) (8-10-3) Jackson's bum of the month tour continues MW - Kid Broad (30/23) (19-5-2) MD10 George Robinson (UR) (10-2) (robinson at pre) HW - Jack Garnder (club) (12-13-1) UD8 Jim Coffey (UR) (5-1) 78-73 (coffey at pre for this club fight) Another undefeated fighter bites the dust |

Longest Title reign is over
November 23, 1912
Title Fight MW - George Gunther (14/CH) (23-6-1) used one big round to end the LBA's longest title reign as he scored a TKO7 over Frank Klaus (CH/1) (27-7-1). Gunther wins the WBC MW title that Klaus just won in September. By rules of the LBA, Klaus has to vacate his WBA title also and a tourney will be drawn up to see who the new champ it. Klaus had defended 11 times. (see new poll). Klaus was in control of the fight until a knockdown early in the 7th round. Gunther dropped him again and then bombed him with blows until the ref stopped the fight with just under 1 minute remaining in the round. I had it 59-56 at the stoppage. Other fights LW - Fighting Dick Hyland (77/70) (18-8) MD10 Kid Black (81/90) (15-11-2) Hyland's AABU LW title was not on the line BW - Rochester Tommy Dixon (UR) (12-0-1) DRAW10 Jimmy Brackett (56/55) (12-12-1) 97-93 for Dixon (Dixon at pre) Total highway robbery here, two biased judges towards Dixon even!! MW - Jack Burke (61/47) (26-19-6) KO10 Bob Turnball (34/48) (18-4-2) BW - George Church (22/18) (20-3-2) KO7 Elias Hamilton (25/30) (16-10) LH - Joe Cavanaugh (UR) (9-0-2) MD8 Bobby McKioick (club) (5-15) 76-75 Cavanaugh (both at pre in this club fight) |

Title Fight WW - George Cole (CH) (22-10-4) scored another MD15 over Joe Gans (3/5) (38-7-3) for his first defense of the WBA WW title. His WBC title was not on the line. It was a close fight throughout as 7 points was the most that seperated the two in any one round. Gans was cut on the lip in the 5th and Cole on the forehead in the 14th. Both were penalized a point for fouling. I had it 142-142, while the official judges had it 143-141/142-143/143-141. Third fight between the two all three have ended in a MD15 with Cole winning two of them. Other Fights HW - Tom Lees (15/8) (32-17-1) TKO2 Tom Sharkey (4/9) (39-16-1) (Sharkey at post) Ends Sharkey's 10 fight win streak LW - Willie Ritchie (14/13) (22-4-4) TKO10 Jack Daly (117/119) (12-15-1) MW - Dan Creedon (28/19) (33-16-1) UD10 Whitey Wenzel (34/40) (16-2) (Wenzel at pre) WW - Dixie Kid (13/12) (28-16-6) UD10 Dal Hawkins (30/37) (19-16-1) Kid ends 1912 with a 5-0-1 record for the year LW - Joe Shugrue (UR) (8-1-3) UD8 Gene Delmont (UR) (1-2-4) (both at pre in this club fight) |

Not quite there yet .... he is 15-0 and just debuted in the rankings at #28. He should probably see a shot at the CBU regional title sometime in 1913.
He is scheduled for the final card of this month but he is fighting a stiff so I doubt he'll rise enough to get into the tourney. Plus he is still at pre-prime so he might not fare too well in it. |

don't have time for the write up but a fan favorite (not Herrera) suffers a bad bad loss in the final card of November.
Drops him from 10th to 42nd and out of the title tourney that was to begin next month. |
