The image appears so offensive from today's eyes that it's easy to think that the artist was racist. But there is another factor to be considered. The Freeman, the newspaper in which the image originally appeared, was a black newspaper in Indianapolis. I would think that the newspaper would not want to go out of its way to offend its audience. We don't know the ethnicity of the artist. We don't have any information about why the caricature was drawn the way it was. The total drawing was called "Scenes from Northwestern Park." The artist was Harry Jackson, who was also a sportswriter. The drawing also contained a rather outlandish sketch of Babe Herron catching a ball.

Joe Scott
Ernest "Joe" Scott was a first baseman with the Homestead Grays and Columbus Blue Birds in 1933, the Chicago American Giants in 1934, and the Philadelphia Stars in 1936. He is shown here in an unidentified uniform. This Joe Scott is different from the first baseman Joe Scott who played with the Birmingham Black Barons from 1947 to 1949, and of course he's not outfielder Joseph Burt Scott either.

Jules Thomas
"Jules" Thomas was an outfielder and pitcher in the Negro Leagues during the lengthy span of 1908-1926. He spent most of that time on two teams -- the Brooklyn Royal Giants and the New York Lincoln Giants. He is shown here in an unidentified uniform, but I think it's a better facial view of him than the photo previously posted on this thread. Jules' formal first name is given as Jack in the Negro Baseball Register by Clark and Lester, but as Julian by Seamheads.com.
