Manfred Ackers career of futility
After getting dispatched by Manfred Schneider, Ackers meets a new young HW from Finland who's career would show some promise to it until ending suddenly at a young age with his sudden death.
Raimo Nisula Rating 3 Finland Heavyweight 1966-69 14 wins / 3 losses / 1 draw / 7 KO Birthplace: Haasmenlinna, Finland Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Nisula died on May 23rd, 1969 at the age of 26 suddenly ending what looked like a possibly good boxing career. Anyone familiar with Nisula as to what happened? He'd defeated Lion Ven by 7th round TKO a little less then a month before his death. It was his 4th consecutive victory, having beaten also Willie Johnson(20-35-2,9KO), Francisco San Jose(14-12-3,10KO) and Ulric Regis(8-9-0,6KO), who'd handed Nisula his 3rd defeat about 6 months previous. Earlier wins in Nisula's career included over Manfred Ackers, DAve Ould(22-11-0,4KO), Manfred Markgraf, Jo Juvillier(14-14-3,5), Harry Kneipp and George Dulaire. He lost to Ermanno Festorazzi and Alfredo Vogrig(33-17-4,13). In his 2nd career fight, he fought a 6 round draw with Jurgen Blin. |

I'll give you a little help here with this. Give me a break from the heavy's and delve into the lighter weights some. I'll start from the bottom of the list here and work up starting with Zadourian and Wohlers. Rocco |

I have a photo of Pierre Vetroff that I have been sitting on and hoping to rate one day. I'll throw it up now in case someone else gets to him first.
Thanks a bunch David

Pierre Vetroff
Ask and ye shall receive. Wait a minute! Isn't that a New Testament verse?!
At all events, here are the ratings for Pierre Vetroff. The Marseilles bantamweight was born in 1936. Fought from 1958 to 1970. Record: 32-24-2 (9). French bantamweight champion, 1960-1962 and 1962-1969. Lost four EBU bantamweight title bouts. In May 1964, he was outpointed by Risto Luukkonen. Mimoun Ben Ali decisioned him in February 1965 to claim the vacant seat. Vetroff lost to Tommaso Galli in March 1966. And Salvatore Burruni ended his great career by knocking out Vetroff in the ninth in April 1969. (Vetroff had upset Burruni two years earlier, winning on a TKO in the seventh.)

Leon Zadourian
French Lightwieght Rating 1
1961-68 10 wins / 8 losses / 1 draw / 4 KO Birthplace: Cannes, France Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto After a 10 round decision over Robert Meunier in his pro debute, Zadourian, in Oct 1962 lost a 15 round decision to Fernand Nollet for the French Lightweight Title. In Feb 1964 he defeated Roger Prigent in 12 round decision in a Semi French LW title bout, then a month later defeated Mohammed Ben Said in a 15 round decision to take the then vacant French LW Title. In March 1965, Zadourian fought for the vacant European (EBU) LW Title against Franco Bondi. Bondi stopped Zadourian in the 3rd round. A couple months later, Leon fought a 15 round draw with Roger Younsy for the French LW title. IN 1966 after loosing 10 round decisions to Borge Krogh and Rene Roque and then defeating Andre Diaoua via 6th round TKO, Zadourian then in October 1966 lost a 12 round decision to Roque in an eliminator bout for the French LW Title. That was Zadourian's last chance at any title. He finished out his career loosing 3 of 5 fights over the next couple years, including a 4th round TKO loss to Bruno Arcari in Leon's last career bout. |

Futile fighters, cont.
Researching the bantamweights for my next EBU/Commonwealth pack, I ran across the following. "Stiff" doesn't do him justice.
Benny Lee. Ghanese banty. Born 1938. Fought from 1958 to 1968. Lee won his maiden bout via TKO in the second over Spider Yusuf in Takoradi, Ghana. Then he lost 26 straight fights. At one stretch he did manage to go the distance in six straight fights, avoiding knockout. But over the next decade he could not even pull out a draw. Nevio Carbi put him away in one. Evan Armstrong in two. Franco Innocenti and Giovanni Girgenti in four. Jack Dillon, Michel Houdeau, and Mimoun Ben Ali in five. He also lost two fights via disqualification, including his last recorded bout--a six-round loss to Fritz Chervet in Geneva, Switzerland.

Hans-Werner Wohlers
German Middleweight Rating 3
1955-64 47 wins / 6 losses / 5 draws / 10 KO Birthplace: Hamburg, Germany Manager: Fritz Weine Rating by: Rocco Del Sesto Wohlers racked up a 29-0-3 record thru June 1959. That record included wins over Karl-Heinz Guder, Kid Dussart, Peter Muller, Alex Buxton and Randy Sandy(after Sandy was disqualified in the 7th round for low blows, Sandy was far ahead on points at the time). Wohlers fought a 10 round draw with Pat McAteer. Some other noteable opponents included wins over welterweight Herbert Glaser(35-12-4,22KO), Jean Ruellet(58-69-21,19KO), a draw with Sauveur Chiocca(72-41-7,20KO), and wins overJohnny Read(22-7-1,15) and Manuel Correa(40-38-10,8). That all set Wohlers up for the shot at the European(EBU) and the German Middleweight Titles in July 1959 against Gustav Scholz. The defending champion Scholz ended up with a fight on his hands as Wohlers carried Scholz through the full 15 rounds. Scholz though was given the decision and handed Wohlers his first career loss. That was then followed 3 months later by his second loss, to Andre Drille, by 9th round KO. Wohlers then won two fights and lost 2 more fights before he then ran off an 8-0-1 streak and got another chance at the German Middlweight Title, in December 1961, this time against Manfred Hass. Wohlers was crowned the German champion on a 12 round decision. After successfully defending the title against Heinz Freytag in April 1962, and won two other non title fights, Wohlers lost his German MW crown to Peter Muller in June 1962. Those two fought a rematch in October that year, with Muller stopping Wohlers in the 5th round. After that, Wohlers fought twice in 1964 winning one and drawing one, then he defeated Giulio Rinaldi in Feb 1964 when Rinaldi was diqualified in the 2nd round by hitting Wohlers while he was down. An 8 round decision over Moussa Sangaree in May of that year then ended Wohlers' career. |
