W: S. Williams (1-0 2.00)
L: Antonelli (5-4 4.10)
HR: (none)
Recap: Cincinnati needed pitching, so they drafted a fireballing righthander, Smokey Joe Williams at the mid-season draft and he really strutted his stuff with a 7-hit victory over the Giants at Crosley Field...he whiffed 6 and walked nobody...with NY up 2-1, a 4-run 6th brought home the win for the Reds and beat Johnny Antonelli...Frank McCormick (.265) singled with 2 outs to chase across the winning score.

W: Marichal (8-3 2.67)
L: Walters (3-8 4.48)
HR: (none)
Recap: In part 2 of the twinbill New York needed a win to take over undisputed possession of first place in the NL and move ahead of the Pirates who lost both games to the Phillies...and Juan Marichal come through for them with a fine performance, striking out 9 and stopping the Reds on 2 runs...with the score even at 2-2 in the top of the 9th, Bill Terry (.310) led off with a double off loser Bucky Walters and Bobby Bonds (.265) doubled him in to win it...Walters had a solid game in defeat, giving up only 3 runs and 6 hits...Bonds also had 2 triples...Cincy fell into the cellar with the loss.

W: Newcombe (3-4 3.72)
L: Hrabosky (0-4 3.86)
HR: Bro - Snider 2 (10) StL - Mize (10)
Recap: Brooklyn continued to win the close ones with a pair of one-run wins over the Cards...they have now won 7 straight, took a 4 game set from St. Louis and are now in third place, a half game up on the Redbirds and only 2 out of first...in the first half of a doubleheader at Sportsman's Park, Don Newcombe was marvelous in a 12 inning victory, holding the Cardinals to just 6 hits...in the 12th Cristobel Torriente, a mid-season draftee, doubled off loser Al Hrabosky and scored the decisive run on a single by Adrian Beltre...one of the few mistakes Newcombe made all day was a 3-run home run ball to Johnny Mize in the last of the 9th that tied it at 4-4 and sent it to extra innings...Duke Snider (.250) smashed 2 fourbaggers for Brooklyn.

BROOKLYN (42-39) 2 7 1 - ST. LOUIS (39-37) 1 5 2 (second game)
W: Hershiser (6-2 2.56)
L: Cooper (8-7 3.59)
HR: StL - Cooper (1)
Recap: In game 2 the Dodgers got another splendid effort on the mound by Orel "Bulldog" Hershiser, who allowed only 1 run and 5 hits with 5 K's and a walk...pitcher Mort Cooper (.308) accounted for the Redbirds' only run with a home run...Zach Wheat (.328) and Gil Hodges (.280) drove in the Dodgers' runs...Cooper also hurled a fine game and gave up only 6 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings.

W: Vaughn (5-3 3.12)
Save: Sutter 3 (1-2 2.88)
L: Burdette (4-7 3.31)
HR: Chi - Banks (14) Bos - C. Jones (12)
Recap: Chicubs Hippo Vaughn and Bruce Sutter teamed up to beat the weak-hitting Boston Braves in the first of two games at County Stadium...Vaughn started and went 8 strong innings, yielding only 5 hits and 2 runs...Sutter pitched a perfect 9th for his 3rd save...in the 4th a triple by new Cub centerfielder, Turkey Stearnes (.333), a walk to Hack Wilson (.296) and a two-base outfield throwing error allowed the eventual winning run...loser Lew Burdette also went 8 innings and pitched well, but was hurt by 4 Brave miscues.

CHICAGO (35-41) 5 8 2 - BOSTON (36-41) 2 6 4 (second game)
W: Warneke (3-4 3.63)
Save: Sutter 4 (1-2 2.88)
L: Niekro (5-3 2.91)
HR: Chi - Banks (15)
Recap: The Cub bats finally came alive with 3 runs in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th to take both ends of the doubleheader against the Braves...faulty fielding with 4 more errors again in this game and no offense spelled doom for Boston and Phil Niekro...Niekro had blanked Chicago on 3 hits over the first 6 frames...overall he gave up 7 hits and only 3 earned runs....in the decisive 7th, Billy Herman's (.305) sac fly scored pinchhitter Mark Grace (.288) with the go-ahead run...Ernie Banks added 2 more in the 8th with his 15th homer...Bruce Sutter saved both games...in the nightcap he pitched 3 scoreless innings for his 4th save...Lon Warneke, in a creditable outing, was the winner, permitting only 4 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings of work.

In the early days of this thread, Shirley Povich, famed Washington sportswriter assessed the Alltime Allstar Association after 2-3 weeks of play. I thought I would repost this, too.

Famed baseball writer Shirley Povich (no, he's not a girl, Macho Men) recently wrote his accessment of the Alltime Allstar Baseball League.

"This Morning with Shirley Povich"

(edited on June 6th: Washington has been renamed the Senators...knuckler's Mom likes the old name better and I'm sure Shirley would, too...so I changed it back to Senators)

My alltime favorite team is not doing so well in the Alltime Allstar Baseball League (I think their new name, the Washington Nationals, is the culprit...but Eugene Kenesaw Mountain Church is hard to deal with on that subject)...but thanks to the Boston Red Sox, they are not in last place. The Nationals have no power...Killebrew is the only threat to go long..he has four this season...no pitching except for two starters, the "Big Train", Walter Johnson (2-3/3.61)and Bert Blyleven (2-3/4.22) and a couple of fine relievers, Rick Aguilera (2-0/0.00) and Bill Dailey (1-1/2.00)...and only a fair defense. Look at those ERA's...Viola (1-4/6.12), Perry (0-2/6.95), Kaat (0-0/7.07) and Pascual (0-2/5.65)...Look at those batting averages...Killebrew (.183/4 HR/11 rbis), Battey (.189), Puckett (.197/0 HR/11 rbis), Gaetti (.214/0 HR/6 rbis) and Oliva .216. Thank goodness for Goose Goslin (.362/1 HR/15 rbis/17 runs), Cecil Travis (.348/0 HR/9 rbis/12 runs) and Rod Carew (.308/1 HR/5 rbis/12 runs)...the team would be in ninth place if it wasn't for them. But things will get better...Puckett and Oliva are just too good to be that bad that long. Pitching wise, it will improve a little bit when Dutch Leonard (0-1/3.50) is moved into the starting rotation and that will be soon. But I think it is going to be a mighty long season until the team goes into the minors and get 3B Ossie Bluege, 1B Mickey Vernon, 2B Bucky Harris, 1B/OF Frank Howard, OF Heinie Manush and OF Jim Lemon...and a few real pitchers like Firpo Marberry and George Mogridge.

The class of the league is the Cleveland Indians. So far, they have hung close to the powerful Yankees with real good hitting (.286), led by the likes of Averill (.367/3 HR/22 rbis/16 runs), Speaker (.360/0 HR/13 rbis/21 runs), Rosen (.323/0 HR/19/9), Lajoie (.316/0 HR/5 rbis/20 runs), Doby (.312/5 HR/12 rbis/13 runs) and Rocky Colavito (.296/3 HR/11 rbis/6 runs). Jim Thome (.188 and no homers) has been benched and Speaker moved to 1B in order to get Colavito's bat in the lineup. Their defense is the best in the league, especially strong up the middle with catchers Hegan and Romano, SS Lou Boudreau, 2B Nap Lajoie and CF Larry Doby, and has really helped a fine pitching staff, that, so far, has struggled. When Lemon (1-2/5.85), Garcia (0-0/8.31) and Narleski (1-1/16.62) come around and they undoubtedly will, they will severely challenge the Bronx Bombers. Addie Joss (3-1/3.89), Early Wynn (2-2/2.93), Bob Feller (2-2/3.71) and Herb Score (3-2/4.46) are fine starters and Doug Jones (1-0/0.00 in 6 appearances) and Don Mossi (0-0/0.93 in 6 appearances) give them an excellent relief tandem. A shortage of longball power is one of their few shortcomings.

New York's strong points are home run hitters like Ruth (5 HR/.326), Gehrig (4 HR/.321), DiMaggio (5 HR/.305), Gordon (4 HR/.309) and Jeter (4HR/.247)...Earl Combs(.366/0 HR/6 rbis/14 runs) is their on base guy and is hitting from the leadoff position. The Yankees hit the most homers and allow the fewest...a great combination. The starters other than Whitey Ford (3-1/2.75) have been only adequate...Mel Stottlemyre (2-1/3.94) and Spud Chandler (2-1/3.90)...and downright poor, Herb Pennock (3-2/4.78), Lefty Gomez (1-1/5.17) and Ron Guidry (3-1/5.45). Great relievers have saved the day for the New Yorkers...Mariano Rivera (1-1/0.64/7 games), Sparky Lyle (0-1/2.31/7 games) and Goose Gossage (0-0/3.00/6 games). Starting pitching seems to be the Yanks' only Achille's heel.

The potent Athletics have not played up to their potential yet...they have been only average in pitching and hitting. Waddell (1-2/6.44) and Bender (1-1/7.41) have not been effective at all and will soon be relegated to the bullpen and replaced by Catfish Hunter (1-1/1.20) and Vida Blue (1-0/3.00). Plank (3-2/3.29) and Grove (2-3/3.89) have been good...however, Rommel (3-2/4.60) has been sporadic. In the bullpen, Bobby Shantz (0-0/3.00/3 saves), Vida Blue and Rollie Fingers (0-0/1.69/1 save) have been very good. The hitters have been disappointing and not up to par...Foxx (.271/1 HR/10 rbis/10 runs) and Cochrane (.260/1 HR/9 rbis/13 runs) are not doing well...and Home Run Baker (.149/0 HR/1 rbi/6 runs), Reggie Jackson (.195/0 HR/4 rbis/3 runs) and Eric Chavez (.136/0 HR/1 rbi/2 runs) with not a single home run between them. It is rumored Baker may soon lose his nickname. The only offensive bright spots in the lineup are Al Simmons (.319/0 HR/10 rbis/9 runs), parttime starter Bert Campaneris (.316/0 HR/6 rbis/3 runs), Jimmy Dykes (.300/1 HR/14 rbis/11 runs) and Miguel Tejada (.272/0 HR/16 rbi's/17 runs). Campaneris has been a real surprise at second base, playing much better than his higher rated teammates. The A's are expected to challenge both Cleveland and New York, if they ever play up to their reputations.

As bad as the A's have been, the Boston Red Sox have been worse. They were expected to contend for the title because of the hardhitting lineup. So far, the Bosox have only one regular over .240...Nomar Garciappara (.289/4 HR/13 rbis/9 runs). They are last in the Majors in hitting...only .229. I think I could go against their lineup and have good success and I'm 92 years old...Mo Vaughn (.133/0 HR/1 rbi/1 run), Ted Williams (.188/2 HR/7 rbis/9 runs), who says he is the best hitter in baseball...I think he is the only one who thinks that right now...Bobby Doerr (.158/0 HR/3 rbis/1 run), Carl Yastrzemski (.220/1 HR/7 rbis/9 runs), Jim Rice (.228/3 HR/12 rbis/9 runs) and Joe Cronin (.240/0 HR/5 rbis/10 runs). They suffer from poor pitching, too. Put it all together and it all adds up to last in the league. Pedro Martinez (1-4/2.72) has been outstanding, but got little bat support...Smokey Joe Wood (1-1/3.41) and Cy Young (2-3/4.03) have been fairly good in starting roles...while Dick Radatz (1-0/1.23), Luis Tiant (0-1/3.09), and Roger Clemens (0-1/3.65) have done well in relief appearances...starters George Ruth (1-2/5.55) and Mel Parnell (0-2/12.19) may be dropped from the rotation in favor of Clemens and Tiant.

The Detroit Tigers have been one of the surprise teams in baseball. They are right up their with the Yankees, only a half game out of first. Picked to finish fifth, they have bewildered and befuddled the experts. Six regulars are hitting over .300 (Team Batting Average .297)....and fine pitching (3.67 ERA/ second best in baseball)...they don't give up many home runs...Cobb (.396/2 HR/22 Runs/15 RBI's), Greenberg (.371/4 HR/24 Runs/21 RBI's), Crawford (.313/15 RBI's), Kell (.306/13 RBI's), Kuenn (.302/13 RBI's/12 Runs), and Heilmann (.301/2 HR/19 RBI's/18 Runs...Trucks (3-0/1.78), Lary (2-1/3.00) are having fine seasons at this point...Hiller in relief (1-0/2.35)...and adequate starters Bunning (1-2/3.93), Newhouser (1-3/3.92), Rowe (3-1/3.82) and Bridges (2-1/4.23). The only disappointments are Charlie Gehringer (.244/1 HR/7 rbis/16 runs), Bill Freehan (.194/1 HR/11 rbis/9 runs) and Al Kaline (.219/0 HR/4 rbis/5 runs). Home run hitters is their biggest need.

The Chicago White Sox have played over their heads this year, led by the power hitting Frank Thomas (.318/6 HR/15 RBI's/21 Runs) and Magglio Ordonez (.282/5 HR/15 RBI's)...plus contact hitters Eddie Collins (.416/2 HR/19 RBI's/18 Runs), Shoeless Joe Jackson (.333/1 HR/11 RBI's/13 Runs) and Luke Appling (.260/2 HR/16 RBI's/10 Runs)....a strong defense headed by Carlton Fisk and Ray Schalk at catcher, SS Aparicio, 2B Collins and CF Jackson...the best speed in the league...and very capable pitching...in starters Ed Cicotte (5-1/1.90), Wilbur Wood (2-1/1.46), Ed Walsh (2-1/4.22) and Ted Lyons (1-2/2.70)...and reliever, soon to be starter, Joe Horlen (1-0/2.51)...Relievers have been poor...Red Faber (0-0/5.29), Gary Peters (0-2/6.40) and Bobby Thigpen (0-1/4.50)...and starter Billy Pierce (0-3/8.39) has been atrocious and will have to go to the bullpen to work out his troubles. If Pierce and Peters can turn it around...and Robin Ventura (.207/0 HR/5 rbis/4 runs), Harold Baines (.237/0 HR/4 rbis/2 runs), Nellie Fox (.200/0 HR/0 rbis/1 run) and Carlton Fisk (.206/0 HR/9 rbis/6 runs) can play up to expections, the Chisox could really liven up the American League pennant chase.

The key to the St. Louis Browns is for drastic improvement in their pitching staff from Jim Palmer (0-3/8.15), Urban Shocker (0-3/10.24), Milt Pappas (0-1/9.64), who have been total flops...and Stu Miller (0-0/5.84), who has been only so-so this season...and improved hitting from stalwarts Eddie Murray (.231/0 HR/8 rbis/7 runs), Ken Williams (.233/2 HR/7 rbis/10 runs) and George Sisler (.289/0 HR/4 rbis/6 runs)...They have to perform extremely well for the Browns to have a shot at the first division. St. Louis has strong defensive play with catchers Rick Dempsey and Henry Severeid, 2B Marty McManus, solid and steady SS Cal Ripken, Jr. and CF Baby Doll Jacobson and Sam West backing up some fine pitchers...Starters Mike Cuellar (5-0/2.66), Mike Mussina (3-1/2.14), and Dick McNally (1-1/2.74)...starter/relievers Hoyt Wilhelm (3-2/1.88) and Ned Garver (1-0/3.47)...Jacobson (.338/0 HR/11 rbis/3 home runs) leads the hitters with good contributions by Cal Ripken (.301/3 HR/10 rbis/10 runs), Marty McManus (.280/0 HR/7 rbis/15 runs) and Sam West (.271/0 HR/10 rbis/10 runs). If they find a couple more effective pitchers and a few more productive hitters, St. Louis' other team could cause a little chaos in the Junior Circuit.

In a post during the early days of this thread, famed Washington sportswriter Shirley Povich assessed the Alltime Allstar Association after about 2-3 weeks of play. I just thought it would be interesting to compare it to current league standings.

"This Morning with Shirley Povich"

The New York Giants were the preseason pick to be the cream of the crop in the National League and they have certainly played like it on the field, too. They hit well for average (.288) and power and have excellent pitching (3.33 ERA) and all of their roster contributes in some way. Marichal (3-0/2.47), Hubbell (3-1/2.85), McGinnity (3-2/2.77), Mathewson (2-3/3.86) are the mainstays of the staff with Antonelli (2-0/4.24) and Gaylord Perry (1-1/4.80) as spot starters. Robb Nen has been very good as the closer (2-1/2.70/3 Saves). Lavelle (0-0/3.86) and Linzy (0-0/13.50/1 Save) round out the solid relieving corps. Bill Terry (.417/5 HR/18 rbis/21 runs) is having a great year and has a lot of help from Jeff Kent (.320/1HR/12 rbis/15 runs), Freddie Lindstrom (.316), Barry Bonds (.299/3HR/15rbis/16runs), Travis Jackson (.287), Willie Mays (.250/4HR/12rbis/16runs) and Mel Ott (.253/4HR/12rbis/16runs). And they will have to continue to be at the top of their games to stay ahead of the Pirates.

Great pitching (2.84 ERA) and excellent hitting (.287) have kept the Pittsburgh Pirates at the top of the standings. Starters Deacon Phillippe (2-2/2.94), Sam Leever (2-2/1.82), Babe Adams (3-1/2.91), Ray Kremer (2-0/0.45), Bob Veale (2-0/2.70), Vic Willis (1-1/3.60) and Jesse Tannehill (2-2/4.31) have been very effective. Roy Face (1-0/1.93) is the primary closer backed up by Kent Tekulve (0-0/5.68/1 save). Hitting is very strong, but lacks the longball...paced by Jason Kendall (.404/1/9rbis/6runs), Roberto Clemente (.327/3/17rbis/18runs), Bill Mazeroski (.325/0/12rbis/16runs), Paul Waner (.320/0/12rbis/16runs), Honus Wagner (.319/2/14rbis/20runs), Arky Vaughan (.313/1HR/20rbis/13runs) and Ralph Kiner (.261/4HR/17rbis/18runs).
Likewise, the Pirates will have to continue to play this well to stay close to the Giants.

Very strong starting pitching has helped the Cincinnati Reds perform better than the preseason prognosticators predicted (they were picked sixth). They have been in the thick of the race so far. Excellent starters are the main reason for their success: Paul Derringer (2-2/2.65), Dolph Luque (2-2/3.35), Pete Donahue (3-1/3.15), Bucky Walters (2-2/3.26) and Jim Maloney (2-1/3.42 usually give Cincy a quality start every time out, which is good because the relievers had been dismal. Clay Carroll (1-0/8.44) and Rob Dibble (1-1/5.87) have not been effective in short relief and Jose Rijo (0-1/5.56) and Eppa Rixey (0-0/8.25) in long relief and spot starts have not done well. Offensively, the Reds have been adequate, but not as good as their talent indicates. Johnny Bench (.234), Joe Morgan (.222), Barry Larkin (.224), Ted Kluszewski (.135) and Ernie Lombardi have greatly underperformed and have been relegated to the bench. Frank Robinson (.359/5HR/16rbis/15runs) has carried the team with some help from Ed Roush (.322), Vada Pinson (.311), Bret Boone (.300) and Tony Perez (.259/2HR/15rbis). Pete Rose has been a mild disappointment hitting only .256. If the relief staff and the hitters become more productive and make a complete turnaround, the Cincinnati Reds could really surprise.

The Boston Braves are exactly where they were picked to be...in fourth place...primarily due to starters Warren Spahn (3-2/2.51), Greg Maddux (3-2/3.55), Lew Burdette (2-2/3.49) and fine work by Don McMahon (1-1/2.40) in bullpen. Tom Glavine (1-1/4.32) has come around lately with some starting help and John Smoltz (1-3/6.25) is on the verge of being sent to the relief corps because of a very slow start. It is remarkable that the Braves are doing as well as they are. Johnny Sain (0-0/5.23), Phil Niekro (0-0/5.87) and Steve Bedrosian (2-0/6.52) really need to step it up. The Braves are hitting only .261, but have displayed some power with 20 home runs, second in the league behind the Dodgers' 24. Eddie Mathews (.322/6HR/13rbis/14runs) is enjoying great success at the plate and is supported by Rafael Furcal (.313/1HR/12 rbis/16runs), Wally Berger (.303/2HR/14rbis/11runs), Javy Lopez (.268/4HR/11rbis/9runs) and Chipper Jones (.244/3HR/12rbis/12runs).
Joe Adcock (.208), Bob Horner (.162) and Andruw Jones have seen limited play and improvement will be needed for the Braves to remain in the first division.

The Brooklyn Dodgers were selected by the writers to finish fifth and so far that where they are. They live and die by the longball and are tops in the NL with 24 and second to the Yanks overall. They only have a .254 Team batting average. Jackie Robinson (.343/3HR/17rbis/15 runs) really drives the offense along with Zach Wheat (.300/1HR/12rbis/13runs), Duke Snider (.245/4HR/19rbis/18runs), Pee Wee Reese (.290/3HR/6rbis/15runs) and Mike Piazza (.277/3HR/10rbis/11runs). Other players Guerrero (.216), Cey (.213), Sheffield (.204), Cuccinello (.200), Campanella (.190) and Gilliam (.182) have done little. Dazzy Vance (3-1/3.35) and Don Sutton (3-2/3.99) have stood out as starters and Orel Hershiser (1-1/1.15), Don Newcombe (0-0/2.30), and Ron Perranoski (1-0/3.86) in relief. Sandy Koufax (3-2/5.90) pitched well in his last game and may be the talent everyone thinks he is. Newcombe and Hershiser are slated to be added to the starting rotation, replacing Don Drysdale (1-2/4.50) and Burleigh Grimes (0-2/6.63). Bob Welch (0-3/4.26) has not delivered much so far this year. The Dodgers can do quite well if they get better results from the non-producers on the team.

The experts gave the Phillies no chance this season, picking them to be dead last, but clutch and timely hitting by Chuck Klein (.388/3HR/16rbis/16runs), Del Ennis (.304/3HR/14rbis/10runs), Mike Schmidt (.304/3HR/16rbis/17runs) and Dick Allen (.209/3HR/14rbis/19runs) helped them evade the basement, thus far. Pretty steady starting pitchers Curt Simmons (2-2/2.17), Pete Alexander (2-2/3.68), Curt Schilling (2-2/4.15), Robin Roberts (2-2/4.86) and Rick Wise (2-0/4.15) have aided, too. Big Jim Konstanty has been dependable in relief, but hasn't gotten any support from Tug McGraw (0-0/6.75) and Jack Baldschun (0-1/6.00). Steve Carlton (1-3/5.75) is now in the bullpen, being ineffective in a starting role. An important ingredient to the Phils' success is missing, CF Richie Ashburn, (.203). He has been benched for poor hitting and his defensive skills are sorely missed. Granny Hamner (.192) and Bob Boone (.159) are also lacking in offense. Philadelphia may be doing the best they can do and could be in trouble if the two teams behind them, the Cards and the Cubs start playing up to their capabilities.

St. Louis has really had its problems with the worst staff in the Majors. They have a sky high 5.38 ERA. Mort Cooper (4-1/3.71), John Tudor (1-0/3.24) and Todd Worrell (1-0/2.00) are the only ones with any success. Bob Gibson (2-1/4.78) has also had some good performances. Others on the staff have been total failures: Starters Dizzy Dean (0-5/7.89), Max Lanier (0-3/9.82), and Harry Brecheen (1-2/6.04) and relievers Joe Hoerner (0-0/7.02) and Al Hrabosky (0-2/7.59). Picked to contend for the league championship, the Redbirds have been right next to terrible. The only thing that has kept them out of last place is their hitting (.274), led by Johnny Mize (.352/4HR/17rbis/15runs), Chick Hafey (.320/2HR/14rbis/17runs), Stan Musial (.317/0HR/11rbis/17runs), Joe Medwick (.303/1HR/12rbis/9runs) and Rogers Hornsby (.301/2HR/16rbis/11runs). Biggest disappointments have been Ken Boyer (.157), Tim McCarver (.186) and Frankie Frisch (.222). The Cards almost have no place but up to go. It's hard to believe that the lousy pitching will continue.

The Cubs were voted to be near the bottom in the preseason poll and that is where they are. Very weak hitting (.233), which is next to last in the Majors, is the main reason. Expected club leaders Ernie Banks (.156), Sammy Sosa (.169), Billy Williams (.182) and Ryne Sandberg (.164) are all in the throes of severe batting slumps. They will have to snap out of it, if the Cubs hope to move up in the standings. Kiki Cuyler (.305/0HR/7rbis/14runs), Hack Wilson (.302/2HR/7rbis/7runs) and Billy Herman (.294/0HR/6rbis/4runs) are the only regulars with any success this year. The pitching has been fairly good with the exception of Mordecai Brown (0-5/7.39) with starters Ed Reulbach (2-3/3.38), Charlie Root (1-4/3.58), Ferguson Jenkins (2-3/3.00) and Hippo Vaughn (0-1/3.44) pitching well. The relievers have been ok...Lee Smith (0-0/4.50), Bruce Sutter (0-1/4.35), Lon Warneke (0-1/4.66) and Rick Reuschel (0-0/3.52). The Cubs really need rapid improvement in the offensive department to rise in the standings.

Just looking for a format that will give you the basic league info and entice you to look at the website for details. I need to spend more time playing my leagues rather than writing about one of them.

I have to shorten the time I spend on this Dynasty thread or I will burnout on it...sorry.

Hopefully this format will work well for me...and for you.

Comments are welcomed and appreciated.

"THIS MORNING WITH SHIRLEY POVICH"

Well, how about my Senators. They are even surprising a diehard, hardcore fan like myself. Look at them, thinking they can play with the big boys like the Yanks and the Tigers. At the halfway point in the season, they are now 4th in the standings. And the so-called experts picked them to finish dead last in the preseason poll. They must be doing it with mirrors. No power like the Yanks, but they do hit the ball a little bit like the Tigers. Goose Goslin (.319), Cecil Travis (.323) and Rod Carew (.316) have been very consistent the whole season and recently got some help from Gary Gaetti (.304), who has taken over at 1B. If Kirby Puckett (.235), Tony Oliva (.256) and Harmon Killebrew (.185 but 9 homers) ever play up to their talent, the big boys had better look out. 'Cause here comes the Senators. Frank Viola (1-5 4.83) and Jim Kaat (1-3 5.67) have been no help. Pitching has been another strong point for us. Maybe our strongest point. Pascual (7-4 2.76), Leonard (7-3 3.12) and Dailey (6-3 2.93) have stood out as starters. The Big Train, Walter Johnson (7-7 2.98), has pitched well, but lost some tough decisions. Out of the bullpen Rick Aguilera (7-1 2.35 30 games and 5 saves) has been absolutely stupendous. Mid-season acquistions Firpo Marberry and Bullet Joe Rogan could really add to the mix...Rogan will be used as a 5th starter and Marberry as a spot starter, long relief man and sometimes fireman, if Aguilera needs rest.

There are a few other teams in the AL, that I have to mention in this column. I do so under duress, but my editor says I have to pretend to be a "journalist" and cover them, too. So here goes.

New York Yankees:
Great power...good hitting...poor pitching (7th in the league, only the Browns are worse)...the addition of pitcher Rube Foster should make them better...they have better players on their bench than many teams have starting...Gehrig, Ruth, DiMaggio have been outstanding...Joe Gordon has cooled off lately, but was a valuable contributor and the team's rbi leader for about 2/3 of the season. They need help at 3B...Lazzeri, Nettles, Rolfe and Tresh have all been tried there to no avail...catchers Dickey and Berra have not delivered offensively yet...Lefty Gomez (8-4 2.74) has been their best starter...Ron Guidry (9-3 4.32) has won a lot of games, but has benefited a lot from the Yankee batting prowess...Mariano Rivera has been superb as a closer...Goose Gossage and Sparky Lyle have not done the job in relief.

Detroit Tigers:
Picked to finish 5th...maybe they have overachieved...but then again, they may just be good...No power, but the best hitters in baseball (.289 team BA)...most runs scored...fine speed...mediocre to fair pitching...Cobb, Greenberg, Heilmann are the mainstays, all playing very well...Kuenn and Kell have really stepped up and produced...both are over .300 hitters...even Birdie Tebbetts is around .300 and has taken the catcher positon from Bill Freehan...Charley Gehringer (.254) has not hit for average or power, but has driven runs and played steady baseball...Tommy Bridges, Hal Newhouser and Dizzy Trout have been the best pitchers...although Trout has lost his last 4 after winning his first 7...the rest of the staff has floundered...even John Hiller in relief...Harry Coveleskie and Jack Morris have been useless...and they need big things from new signee, Hilton Smith, who will be in the starting rotation.

Chicago White Sox:

Most surprising team so far...picked for 6th in the preseason...best pitching by far in the AL...Horlen, Wood, Lyons and Walsh are all have ERA's 2.42 to 3.03...pretty good hitting led by Eddie Collins (.326), Luke Appling (.281), Joe Jackson (.343), Frank Thomas (.284) and Magglio Ordonez (.261)...the first trio set the table, then Thomas and Ordonez clean the plates with 17 homers and 12 homers respectively and many clutch hits...reliever Bobby Thigpen has done well as the finisher...Billy Pierce has not come up to his potential...need better hitting at shortstop...signed Dick Lundy at midyear to try and solve that...leftfield platoon of Harold Baines and Minnie Minoso has not provided any run production...catchers Ray Schalk and Carlton Fisk have been weak offensively.

Philadelphia:

Second most disappointing team...picked 3rd to contend with Cleveland and New York for the title...just hasn't happened...terrible hitting (.244 team average) and only so-so pitching...too many players having subpar seasons...Frank "Home Run" Baker, Reggie Jackson, Miguel Tejada and Eric Chavez not even hitting their weight...Jackson and Baker do most of their playing on the bench now...Rube Waddell and Chief Bender big pitching disappointments...Eddie Plank and Eddie Rommel haven't shown well...Lefty Grove and Catfish Hunter have done well as starters...Rollie Fingers has shined as a closer...they need help at 2B, SS and in the OF...only Jimmie Foxx (14 HR) and Jose Canseco (12 HR) have provide any offense...Al Simmons is the only .300 hitter, but no one is on base when he gets a hit...a fine shortstop was added recently...John Henry Lloyd could really help the A's if he plays up to expectations...If this team starts hitting and pitching the way they are capable, they could challenge the leaders.

Boston Red Sox:

Just a very bad team so far...but it is showing some signs of improvement lately and has risen from "deep in the dismal and depressing depths and despair of the basement" to 6th place...I like alliteration...Williams, Rice, Yaz, Cronin, Vaughn, Doerr, Boggs...in fact just about the whole team is abyssmal...only Johnny Pesky (.328) and Dom DiMaggio (.291) are enjoying good seasons and Pesky was injured for over 30 games...Nomar has had a decent season and leads the team in homers with 9 and second with 45 rbis...but he hasn't hit for average yet, lingering around .262 so far...Williams has 9 HRs and 47 rbis, but only a pathetic .243 batting average for perhaps the best pure hitter in baseball...CF Oscar Charleston was taken in the mid-season draft and really looks like the real thing...has hit around .500 in his first 6 games with 2 home runs...pitching-wise only average as a staff...great relief work at times by Dick Radatz (4-2 1.47 7 saves), but he has been inconsistent and has blown 4 save opportunities...Cy Young (6-7 3.19) has been the best and most consistent starter...Pedro Martinez (4-11 4.24) has been very good and very bad...same for George Ruth (5-8 3.48) and Smokey Joe Wood (6-3 3.59)...the Red Sox could be challengers if players play up to their potential.

Cleveland Indians:

The most disappointing team in the AL...were picked by the renowned baseball experts (we are officially called "sports journalists") to be the top team in the league because of superior pitching staff and a bunch of good, solid superstars...but it hasn't come to be so far...they are just about last in all offensive categories...9 of their 15 position players are hitting under .238 with several under .200...Lajoie, Speaker, Averill and Doby have been the Tribe's only good hitters, but they can't drive anybody in that isn't on base...their hits are wasted for the most part...3B-SS Willie Wells was signed during the midyear draft to hopefully add some run support and offensive firepower to the team...Bob Feller has done very well on the mound...Herb Score, Early Wynn and Addie Joss has been off and on...Mike Garcia and Don Mossi have done well as spot starter and long reliever...Bob Lemon has been poor and is now relegated to the bullpen...Ray Narleski has been a big failure in relief...and Doug Jones has been sporatic as the closer...there is nowhere to go but up for Cleveland.

St. Louis Browns:

We, the astute assessors of baseball prognostications, were "right on" (as I hear some of the young folks say) with regards to the hapless and hopeless Browns (we picked them to be 7th)...no power, no hitting, no speed, and no pitching...no wonder they are loitering and lost in last place...even we astute assessors can see that...they are almost last in every statistical category...owner Bill Veeck may have to resort to playing dwarfs and hobbits to get anybody to come to the games...only George Sisler (.355) and Baby Doll Jacobson (.290) have produced for them...at midseason they should have drafted a new team...Mike Cuellar (9-6 2.87) has been one of the few bright spots on the team...He has really been good this season (even with the St. Louis Browns backing him)...Hoyt Wilhelm (8-4 3.22 4 saves) has been better as a spot starter than a reliever...he has blown 4 saves...at the mid-season draft St. Louis had the first pick and chose catcher Josh Gibson, an outstanding hitter with power and great contact...also an excellent arm and good range...and he looks like he is the a "real find" for them, hitting .444 with 2 homers and 8 rbis in his first 5 games...but the Browns need several more Josh Gibsons, George Sislers, Mike Cuellars and Hoyt Wilhelms to compete.

And since I am one of the more astute assessors of baseball prognosticators, I will boldly and objectively pick my favorite team, the Washingon Senators, to win the American League pennant...of course, go on and win the World Series, too...if they are going to win one of them, they might as well take it all.

My editor says as a journalist, I have to cover that "other" league, too...the National League...I don't understand why...Washington don't have a team in it.

Since my original website designer couldn't finish it, someone else is going to finish the project.

He will completely redo it on another site...he said he could do it pretty quickly.

I am excited by this as it has been a big disappointment that 5 months passed and it was only partially completed.

At least we have access to the Alltime Allstar Association stats.

I will let you know the new website address when it is completed.

HR: Bos - Leonard (1)

Recap: Chicago's Lon Warneke carded all 10 innings and just barely squeaked by Phil Niekro and the Boston Braves...in the last of the 10th Bill Madlock (.284) doubled off of Niekro and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, then Kiki Cuyler (.244) pushed him across the plate with a single off of Steve Bedrosian.

Tomorrow all teams will play doubleheaders.

LP: Paige (0-1 2.81) T. Worrell (8th)

HR: Bro - Cuccinello (1) Drysdale (1)

Well, it is finally over...all good things must come to an end...the Dodgers' 13-game winning streak has ended...St. Louis' crafty lefty John Tudor was the one who finally tamed Brooklyn...he gave up back-to-back homers and 3 runs in the 2nd inning, then blanked them the rest of the ballgame...poor fielding led to the Dodger demise and accounted for 2 unearned runs...Brooklyn was up 3-1 in the 4th, when Enos Slaughter's two base hit drove in one run, then a throwing error by 3B Adrian Beltre allowed two more to score.

BOSTON - 2 5 1 (first game)
CHICAGO 7 14 0

WP: Reulbach (5-9 3.85)

"THIS MORNING WITH SHIRLEY POVICH"

My Editor said according to his diligent research, there was another Major League in the United States and he strongly suggested I should diligently research it and do a column on it...just like I did on my one and only favorite league, the American League. Well...here goes:

NEW YORK GIANTS

We, the great sports pronosticators, really look good on this one. We picked them to win the NL and right now at the midpoint in the season, that's just where they are...Really superb pitching has gotten them there...A team 3.07 ERA leads all of baseball...the Dodgers 3.29 is second...5 starters under 3.00...Good power hitting is another reason...the Giants have just average hitting, but above average fielding...good defense by catchers Bresnahan and Westrum...could use better hitter at catcher...never settled on a 3B or SS...although Matt Williams and Freddie Lindstrom have been productive at 3B with 48 rbis...Jackson, Dark, Bartell and Lindstrom have been tried at SS...midseason draftee, Martin Dihigo looks like a bonifide ML hitter, but a little weak at second defensively...if the great pitching holds up, then the Giants should be in the thick of the National League race...if the hitting picks up to its potential, they really would be in good shape...still looks like the winner in the NL.

BROOKLYN DODGERS

Well, we, the great sports prognosticators, don't look so great on this pick...Brooklyn was picked to finish 5th, but has surprised and is currently in second place...I am quite sure this is just an aberration and the Bums will soon return to the second division, where the great sports pronosticators say they should be...how are they doing it?...with home run power and fine pitching...1st in homers in the NL and 2nd in pitching...fine team speed...1st in base steals...only average hitting...but 1st in fielding...need help from pitchers Burleigh Grimes (1-6 5.43) and Bob Welch (1-4 4.33)...and outfielders Gary Sheffield (.262) and Pedro Guerrero (.180)...if they come around, look out, New York...midyear draft pick, Cristobel Torriente (.200), has much improved the defense in the outfield, but has not adapted to big league pitching yet...Dazzy Vance (12-2 2.57), Oral Hershiser (7-2 2.45) and reliever Ron Perranoski (9-4 2.47) have been brilliant...Sandy Koufax has the talent to be the best hurler on the team...so far, he has been good, but not consistently good...timely hitting and winning close games has been Brooklyn's forte this year...if the fine pitching and power hitting continues they could be in the thick of things come September.

PITTSBURGH PIRATES

Well, it seems we, the expert prognosticators, know what we are talking about when we talk about the Pirates...we picked them second and they are presently in third...however, they have been flutuating from first to second all season...only Brooklyn's fabulous 13-game win streak has kept the Bucs out of second place...Pittsburgh's strong point is its hitters...best in the NL with a .276 team average...good team speed...but absolutely no power, ranked near the bottom in this important category...solid at every position offensively...good hitting/defense from catchers...only Willie Stargell (.208 2 HR in 15 starts) is a major disappointment as far as position players along with IF Glenn Wright (.179)...poor pitching overall, but 3 fine starters: Ray Kremer (7-4 2.91), Sam Leever (7-6 2.79) and Deacon Phillippe (6-7 2.85)...need to find 2 more starters from Vic Willis, Jesse Tannehill, Babe Adams and new recruits, Leon Day and Wilbur Cooper ...mediocre relief work by Roy Face and Kent Tekulve and spot starter/reliever Bob Veale...another mild disappointment has been Honus Wagner's hitting for average (.262), but his versatility to play everything but catcher has been a big plus to the team...the Pirates have been able to plug in a good hitter at almost every position because of Wagner's great utility play...pitching is the key to Pittsburgh's success...that have the hitting to win.

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES

HMMM...this has to be another aberration...we, the great sports journalists, who diligently research to come up with our very astute and sometime correct prognostications, couldn't be this wrong...how could a team we picked for the cellar be in 4th place and only 3.5 games out of first?...Well, they do it with good hitting from Richie Ashburn (.324), Fresco Thompson (.304) and Chuck Klein (.307)...and good power and clutch hitting from Klein (12 HR 51 rbis), Schmidt (.224 14 HR 40 rbis), Dick Allen (.280 12 HR 53 rbis) and Del Ennis (.279 8 HR 37 rbis)...good fielding...only two dependable starters, Pete Alexander (10-3 2.49) and Robin Roberts (9-4 3.30)...the rest have ERA's over 4.00...Curt Schilling (3-7 4.30) and Steve Carlton (3-8 4.56) are big disappointments...poor relief pitching from Jim Konstanty (4.34) and Tug McGraw (4.55)...need more offense from catchers...Biz Mackey, signed at midseason looks like he could be a big asset offensively and defensively...SS Larry Bowa (.278) has been great in the field and a good surprise at bat...Same goes for a guy most people have never heard of...2B Fresco Thompson...underated LF/RF Del Ennis has had a fine season...Cravath and O'Doul have not been able to supplant him...Everybody thought Gavvy Cravath (.244 0 HR) would be a star, but not so far...he has been on the bench most of the time and limited to pinchhit roles...pitching is all the Phils need to get up with the Big Boys...but don't look for it to happen...AHEM...we, the great sports experts and astute prognosticators are seldom wrong...or seldom will admit we are.

ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

How could a team so good play so bad?..poor pitching, poor fielding and no power...that'll do it everytime...We, the experts, picked them to contend for the title and to finish third...Ahem...they are in 5th place, but only 5.5 games out...so we still have hopes of being a little more accurate...lousy pitching, both starting and relieving (3.88 ERA)...next-to-last in the NL...pretty fair hitting for average (.260) has been the Cards' only plus this year...Chick Hafey (.300 6 HR 49 R 40 RBI), Stan Musial (.272 8 HR 60 R 39 RBI), Johnny Mize (.277 10 HR 42 R 44 RBI) and Rogers Hornsby (.286 4 HR 41 R 49 RBI) have provided almost all of the St. Louis offense...Ken Boyer (.118), Tim McCarver (.202), Edgar Renteria (.216) and Ossie Smith (.213) have just not produced at bat...I guess Ozzie can be forgiven, he is not expected to hit for a high average, but .250 would be nice...only one starter John Tudor (6-2 2.76) and one reliever Todd Worrell (5-6 2.62) have been consistently effective...the rest have all been hit or miss...mainly hit by the opposing hitters, that is...Bob Gibson (8-6 3.65) and Dizzy Dean (4-7 4.25) both have the ability to be outstanding pitchers...Satchel Paige (0-1 2.81), a midyear signee, has great potential, too...Mort Cooper (8-8 3.80) has good credentials, too...if these 4 blossom and develop some consistency, the Redbirds could fly higher in the NL race.

BOSTON BRAVES

Picked by we, the experts, to finish at the bottom of the first division (actually fourth place would have been more succinct to write, but I need to stretch this copy in order to fill the space allotted to it by my esteemed senior editor, who assigned this wonderful chore..Ahem, I mean column to me) because of their great pitching, the Braves have been a little disappointing...they still have good pitching (3.33 ERA)...Greg Maddux (11-3 2.63), Lew Burdette (4-7 2.98), Warren Spahn (5-6 2.80) (injured), Phil Niekro (5-4 2.81) and relievers Gene Garber (1-1 1.65) and Don McMahon (2-4 3.35)...Spahn is on the DL for 60 days and will miss another month...third best team ERA in the league behind the Giants and Dodgers, but have the most pathetic hitters (.234 team BA) in all of baseball...'nuff said...they are lucky to be sixth...Boston has received mediocre offense from too many players...they have tried 6 different first basemen...the current one Buck Leonard is hitting only .167 since joining the club at the season's midpoint...only Johnny Logan (.291) and Wally Berger (.271) have had decent numbers...if Hank Aaron (.250), Eddie Mathews (.246), Chipper Jones (.231), Fred McGriff (.243) Bob Horner (.167), Joe Adcock (.185), Javy Lopez (.227), and Andruw Jones (.200) could step it up at the plate when they step to the plate (don't you like the cute way I doubled the size of this sentence?), the Braves could really make some heap big noise in the National League.

CHICAGO CUBS

Wow...looka here...we, the sports experts and astute prognosticators are once again right on the button with an accurate prediction...the Cubs were picked seventh in the preseason picks and that is exactly where they are in the standings, but they are only 8 games behind the first place Giants...and how have they managed to do it?...well, by playing bad baseball you might say...actually they look good on paper...good starting and relief pitching (3.39 ERA), good power, good speed...but lousy defense, the worst by far in the Majors (.973 FA)...Moe Brown (9-6 2.64), Ferguson Jenkins (7-7 2.68), Hippo Vaughn (5-3 2.79) and Lon Warneke (4-4 3.13) have all been reliable starters...Bruce Sutter (1-3 3.63) has been fair in the closer role...however, Lee Smith (1-2 5.03) has been atrocious, blowing 5 of 6 save opportunities...on the batting side of the ledger, only Hack Wilson (.285 13 HR 47 RBI) and Ernie Banks (.251 16 HR 56 RBI) have been productive...Billy Herman (.317), Bill Dahlen (.309), Bill Madlock (.280), Mark Grace (.291) and midseason draft pick, Turkey Stearnes (.294) have good averages, but are not producing runs...disappointing players: Sammy Sosa (.196 9 HR 17 RBI), Kiki Cuyler (.242), Billy Williams (.252 2 HR 13 RBI) and Ron Santo (.253 1 HR 10 RBI)...disappointing pitchers: Ed Reulbach (5-9 3.89) and Charlie Root (3-8 4.34)...the Cubs have a lot of players having subpar seasons...if a few of them turn it around, it wouldn't be impossible to make up 8 games.

CINCINNATI REDS

AHEM...we, the astute sports experts and prognosticators came close again... (sportswriter makes a somewhat limp semi-fist and blows on his folded fingers to indicate he is good at whatever he was doing or he is taking credit and compliments for doing something well...we did things like this in the old days of yore and some of us oldies still do it in modern times)...Cincinnati was chosen to finish 6th and they are 8th...so that is close enough for us sportswriters...we are getting desparate to at least come close to being partially right....sportswriters are partially right some of the time...anyway, the Reds are last in the NL because of terrible pitching and poor hitting...a good combination, if your goal is to finish last...they are absolutely last in the majors in ERA (4.36)...little used Eppa Rixey (3-1 3.79) and newcomer from the midseason draft, Smokey Joe Williams (2-0 2.81) are the only ones on the pitching corpse...oops, make that pitching corps...that have an ERA under 4.00...and they have an abundance of "hitters" (what a misnomer) hitting, so to speak, under .225...Johnny Bench (.192), Ted Kluszewski (.218), Joe Morgan (.191), Tony Perez (.224) and Barry Larkin (.203)...Frank Robinson (.287 19 HR 69 RBI) is having a great year...while Ed Roush (.323 40 R 31 RBI) and Vada Pinson (.302 9 HR 27 RBI) are having solid seasons...but that's about it...the Reds have a lot of talent and will see much improvement when they start producing....they really need some pitchers.

My favorite town, Washington, needs a team in the National League....that way I could stand to cover the "other" league...naw, that couldn't happen in a hundred years...a Washington team in the National League?...but then again, on second thought, maybe they could call them the Nationals.

And remember you heard it first from me...just in case Malleus Deus...tries to claim he came up with it first.

Big 3-games series in both leagues.

In the American League the third place Chicago White Sox travel to Detroit to tangle with the second place Tigers...Detroit is 1.5 games behind the first place New York Yankees...the Pale Horse trail by 3.5 games...the Bronx Bombers are at Yankee Stadium hosting cellar-dwelling Cleveland.

Over in the National League...first place New York heads to Pittsburgh to play the third place Pirates at Forbes Field, while two hot clubs tangle at Wrigley in Chicago...second place Brooklyn and the sixth place Chicubs...the Cubs have won their last three games and the Dodgers 13 of their 14...fourth place Philadelphia will be on the road in Cincinnati playing the last place Reds...the Giants are one game up on the Bums...3 on the Bucs...and 3.5 on the Phils.

Man...I'm pleased the Braves pitchers have been as effective as they've been....but where's the offense. In a league format such as this where every team has good talent...I would of thought that they're pitchers would have struggled a bit and they would be relying on the likes of Hank & Eddie & Chipper ect...

Hopefully they will heat up....
