STANDINGS
44-19, #1 in the AL, 1.5 games ahead of Boston, 9-4 in the last two weeks

BAD NEWS
-Injuries bit our minor leagues pretty bad earlier but they've all healed up. This month our active roster is suffering. 3Quarters of our rotation is day2day. Matt Perly is also missing games due to a sore throwing arm.
-Fish is still stinking it up while our RF duo are still hot. Fish will move to the bottom of the lineup until he fixes his swing. At least Fish is giving us an excellent effort every day with his glove.
-Lloyd Wyman and Sam Cole had been an extremely hot closer/setup duo until this month but they have combined for some blown saves and blown hold ops. Wyman's 8.22 in the last couple of weeks hurt the most.
-Bud Ulrich only went 1-1 in 4GS despite a 1.84 era & Roy Wolfe went 0-0 in 3GS despite a 2.66 era. We've got to give these two a little better run support and our closers need to get back to throwing sharp like they were before June.

GOOD NEWS
-Ray Kress hit .340, 14BB and 5HR in the first half of June. Hopefully, he will stay hot and get back into the HR race.
-Luther Ormiston's .347 & 4HR was also nice from the cleanup spot.
-Corky Stell is 5-0 in his last 5 GS and has only allowed more than 2R twice in his last 10 GS.

Goose - this trading block thing with Luther seems to have inspired him. Consecutive POMs. Killing the ball. He did take a pair of talent hits early in the year that are troubling:

Tuesday 4/19/1952 :
Luther Ormiston has lost some power...

Tuesday 4/26/1952 :
Luther Ormiston plate discipline seems to have faded...

But he's murdered the ball since then. He just passed career HR #200.

The Boss finally had a month that looks like himself: .321/.463/.667 with 8 HR.

Kitt picked it up in June. Sandoz and Mitchell are a miracle platoon in RF. If you can just get Fish hitting for some average.

The rotation is amazing.

These guys are just about making a believer out of me. Give them new managers raises. And give our players some credit for showing some heart by gutting out these annoying injuries that have plagued us lately.

Yea, there have been some discouraging talent drops, but also a few positives ones as well.

Also need the thank the Yanks for knocking Boston and Philly down a notch. They seem to step it up a lot and give the top teams a run for their money. I keep telling people not to over look them.

We still have some tough games ahead of us and these nagging injuries aren't helping. Nearly had heart failure when I saw Kress took a hit. But luckily it was minor and he looks to be healthy again in a couple of days.

STANDINGS
62-26, #1 overall, 8 games head of Philly, 8-3 in the last two weeks

BAD NEWS
-Ray Kress has been awful so far this month (.217, 1HR, 3R & 0-3, 2Ks in the all star game - very un-Kress like).
-George Young is going to miss over a month due to a pulled groin muscle.
-Matt Perly was our hottest bat this month, but then hurt him self again. He will, hopefully, be 100% again in a couple of days.
-Sandoz and Mitchell both had a bad couple of weeks, so RF was unusually unproductive.

GOOD NEWS
-Our pitching has show some minor inconsistancy lately, but for the most part has been keeping us in games as we had too many 1H, 4H, 5H games.
-On 7/4 Roland Fish was named Player of the Week hitting .474, 5HR, 9RBI.
-Seven Tiggers were named to the AllStar Team.
-Despite his age, Kitterman has shown an improved swing vs LHP. We expect to see him get hot and finish the year strong as he has in the past. Hopefully Kress will do the same hitting right behind him.
-Corky Stell is trying to get back to back POM as he went 2-0, 1.17 so far this month. He is 8-0 with 6 POG in his last 10 starts.

STANDINGS
70-33, #1 overall, 8 games ahead of Boston, 8-7 in the last two weeks

BAD NEWS
-August is one of those months where we get 8/1 off and then have pretty much no days off for the remainder of the month. And, we already have guys complaining about being tired. We're going with a similar depth chart as last year, so maybe age is finally starting to factor in for some of these guys. We may have to make some tweaks.
-Ray Kress hit .263, 2HR all month. You can say he's underachieving or you can say he's being way too unselfish. He leads the league in walks and has been a factor in Ormiston dominating the league in RBIs. Bottom line, we are winning so we should whine too much about Kress not being aggressive enough with the bat.
-Hal Andrew is seeing his ERA rise as he's been struggling at times. He is usually better in the last month or two so hopefully that last win will provide him a spark. He's dropped back all the way to #3 in our rotation as Stell and Ulrich have been more consistent this year.
-Smokey Meacham hit a pathetic .077 in 39AB this month. We're trying to give enough at bats to work out his swing, but he's clearly no longer the overachiever that he was last year. Combine that with his declining defense behind the plate and he's turning into quite the bust.

GOOD NEWS
-Luther Ormiston is dominating the league in HR and RBI and is hitting for respectable average. He's not a triple crown threat, but he's for sure trying to prove that his '48 batter of the year title was not a fluke. Interestingly, '48 was our last pennant season. Go Ormiston go.
-On 7/22 Luther Ormiston was named Player of the Week hitting .368, 5 HR, 15 RBI.
-Despite all the bad news, we maintained an 8 game lead over #2.
-Corky Stell (4-1, 2.27) & Bud Ulrich (4-0, 3.00) lead our team through a month where our offense was very inconsistent.

STANDINGS
79-38, #1 overall, 10 games ahead of Boston, 9-5 in the last two weeks.

BAD NEWS
-Lots of lineup chaos due to guys needing days off. We get no breaks in the schedule until September, so guys just need to gut it out.
-George Young continues to rehab, but his skills are clearly on the decline. It looks like the Instigator will be heading back to the minors when his injury is healed.
-Smokey Meacham also continues to disintegrate before our eyes. If he stays on this decline, he'll be fighting for his roster spot with Gale Adams next spring training.

GOOD NEWS
-On 8/8 Ray Kress was named Player of the Week hitting .526, 4 HR, 8RBI. He's been our top hitter his month hitting .391, 6HR, 12RBI, 13R, 11BB.
-Matt Perly is showing an improved swing from the right side of the plate. Matt went into a power hitting frenzy hitting 4HR in a 6 game span as he and Kress attempt to chase down Ormiston for the HR lead.
-Corky Stell was our best pitcher going 2-0, 1.59 in 4GS and Hal Andrew wasn't far behind going 1-1, 1.93 in 3GS.
-As mentioned above Lloyd Wyman tied a personal best and a Tigers team record with 19 saves. I have a hard time believing he'll ever match Hyberg's AL record of 30, but still a nice effort from our aging closer thus far this year.

ROSTER MOVES
-Young's injury left us with no good backups at 1B, so we signed Lee Richardson for the remainder of the season. He started 2 games and PH in another. He hits to the gaps fairly well and has a nice glove at 1B, but this was clearly a signing to fill a temporary hole. Lee was released before opening day by the A's and is seeing his first action of the year as a Tiger.

DEVELOPMENT NEWS
-Just got notification that our prized 1st round draft pick Mike Kreitenberg added 1B to his list of playable positions. He prefers to play middle IF, but our Toledo-AAA coach Jersey Piccinnino gave Mike the "do it for the team" speech so Mike went ahead and put some effort into learning 1B. Now, he has better range there than anyone on our payroll. Mike will get a lot more at bats by being able to backup 3 IF spots and will provide us with something we've sorely lacked... SPEED. He'll finish out August in AAA and then very likely be a September call up. Next season, there's a good chance that he'll be primary backup at 2B, 1B, & at least 50% backup at SS as well as see a lot of PR opportunities. Of course, injuries or trades are always possible. Nothing is set in stone.

There was little chance he'd beat out Perly's thunder bat or Castaneda's wizard like glove any time soon, so a utlity IF guy is about as good as he could hope for right now as a Tiger. I would love to see him get hot and challenge Kitterman for that 1B job in a year or two from now... at least until an op at 2B presents itself.

Definitely, I couldn't see Mike being an everday player just yet. His contact is only 5 and his power is a dismal 1.

STANDINGS
85-47, #1 over all, 8 games ahead of Philly, 6-9 in the last two weeks.
-We have a lot of games remaining against winning teams - We have 4 games left against Boston, 3 against Philly, 6 against the Yanks. Washington's pitchers have also given us problems and we have a series against them. Also, we have more road games than home games left so we really have a tough final month ahead of us.

BAD NEWS
-I can't believe the number of errors we had in the last two weeks. Someone's put a serious hex on our gloves. Several games were put in jeopardy or flat out lost due to errors.
-Not much on offense to brag about except for maybe Kress, Kitterman, and Perly.
-Roy Wolfe is very inconsistent right now.

GOOD NEWS
-On 9/1 Hal Andrew was named AL Pitcher of the Month 4-2, 7GS, 2.03 & 1 shutout.

Not sure yet. He'll be a few notches higher than anyone else on my team, but I don't max out things like that just to try and get record breaking numbers just like I don't suck points away from people's defensive training in spring training just to boost their offense.

But he has been called up so wish him luck for this next sim.

I just hope my string of bad luck ends tonight. I had something come crashing out of the back of a truck and damage my car on the HWY tonight. Then I hurt my hand doing a required board break in my Taekwondo class. I came home a bit grumpy and now see that my super cool laptop has blown its super cool wide screen monitor. Just waiting for the meteor to come crashing through my roof now. Not the best evening I've had in a while.

Ouch. In more ways than one. You may be unpleasantly surprised to see the A's have made a race of the AL pennant. With 9 games left, they're just 4 out.

Forget a bad night, this has turned into a bad week. Oh well, can't dwell on this stuff. Just have to look forward to a better tomorrow.

9/15 day off

STANDINGS
91-54, #1 overall, 4 games ahead of Philly, 6-7 in the last two weeks
-We are still in the lead but Philly is definitely threatening. We need to finish the last 9 games strong, not just to improve our chances of a pennant, but to build some momentum in case we do make it. Right now, our confidence is not lost, but it is definitely shaken after some terrible games in the last month and a half.
-We have 6 left at home and 3 on the road. We have 3 games at home against the Yanks then 3 against Washington and then we finish the season in NY.

BAD NEWS
-Luther Ormiston was lost for 9 games due to pulled back muscle. That left Mitch Ferron hitting cleanup. Idiot AI, I would have moved Perly up in the lineup with Ormiston out. Then again, Perly sucked (.229) so who knows if it would have helped. But, with Kress getting walked at a record pace this year, it really sucks to not have a big stick backing him up to make folks pay. Hopefully we can find a way to stay healthy in the final 9 games.
-Philly and Boston both swept us in a series. Ulrich 5.21, Andrew 5.75, Wolfe 5.56, Leveck 67.52, Brown 27.00, Vonkitzing 36.00. With ERAs like this combined with Ormiston's injury, its no wonder we dropped 4 games in two weeks.

GOOD NEWS
-Ray Kress is finishing the season strong and making a case for another possible BOY. But he's going to really have to impress in the final 9 games. It doesn't look like he's going to catch Ormiston in the HR race however. On 9/5 he was named Player of the Week for hitting .565, 2HR & 6RBI.
-Lloyd Wyman set a new team record with 63 games pitched. He broke the team saves record earlier in the year.
-Smokey Meacham (.429) & Dennis Kitterman (.360) were our top two hitters these last couple of weeks.
-Despite a collapse of almost our entire pitching staff, Corky Stell remained a rock going 2-1, 2.19. He just turned 36, so we will have to keep an eye on him.

BAD NEWS
-We just finished the season strong and healthy as well as earned our first pennant of the '50s so I have almost nothing to complain about.
-I am a little concerned with how long it took the NL race to finish out. I hope my guys stay hungry during their extended time off.

GOOD NEWS
-On 9/26 Roy Wolfe was named Player of the Week... He won 2 games, one shutout, 1.50 ERA while fanning 11.
-Ray Kress set a team single season record in Walks (148) and ended up #23 in AVG & #11 in HRs on the Career Leaderboard.
-Ray Kress finished the season without a single error in 146 games (I believe he's only committed 3 errors total in his 10 year career - 2 last year & 1 in '47). Carl Sandoz also had 0 errors in 96 games this year.
-Lloyd Wyman set a team single season record in Games Played (65) & Saves (24) and ended up #10 on the Career Leaderboard in Saves.

Be ready to edit those, Goose. Either Luther or Kress should end up winning the BOY. I've got to think (and hope) Corky takes the POY over Stevens of the A's. Got to think Win Leader + ERA Leader + Pennant wins over Win Leader + K Leader.

Kress, Luther, Corky and Ulrich should earn All Pro. Perly and Habermehl is tight at 2B... I *think* Habermehl is probably a bit more deserving. Hal probably finishes behind Weeks and Stevens for a third All Pro pitcher, but they're awfully close.
