Tampa Bay's Hazle named Batter of the Month
The Contential's best player of the month was Cleveland's David Doster, who wins the award for the 1st time in his career. David was on fire, hitting .358 with 2 homeruns and 13 RBI. Doster has hit for a .351 average this season. He has 13 extra base hits along with 77 total bases, resulting in a .450 slugging percentage. It's the 1st time that the North American Batter of the Month award goes to Tampa Bay's right fielder Bob Hazle. Bob pounded opposing pitchers, hitting .473 with 7 and 17 RBI while slugging .774. While compiling an on base percentage of .430, Bob hit .348 and slugged .585. He has collected 55 runs batted in this year. He's 3rd in the North American in batting, 1st in homeruns and 4th in RBI!

Crawford (HOU) and Lane (ATL) win monthly pitcher award
The best month of June in the Contential certainly had Houston's left-hander Joe Crawford, earning him the Pitcher of the Month award. He had an ERA of just 1.17 in 38.1 innings of work in which he struck out 13 hitters. His record in June is 4-0. Joe pitched a shutout as well. In 17 starts this year Joe struck out 54 batters in 117.1 innings of work. His ERA is 2.84, his record 10-4. Joe has pitched one shutout and one complete game. He's 6th in the Contential in ERA and 2nd in wins! Jerry Lane couldn't have pitched much better than he did in June, and the North American thought so as well, naming the right-hander Pitcher of the Month. His ERA of just 1.15 helped him to a 4-0 record in June. He worked 39 innings, striking out 7 hitters while walking 9. In 17 starts this year Jerry struck out 31 batters in 119 innings of work. His ERA is 2.19, his record 8-4. Jerry has pitched one shutout and 3 complete games. He's 3rd in the North American in ERA and 2nd in wins!

The Story I'm not going to tell

Well, as I keep yammering about as much as I can, I'm doing something different after this dynasty. And, as this is just my record keeping/note keeping I wanted to put down what some of the "storyline" ideas I had that just didn't work out for this one.

The big story for the All-Star Break was going to be expansion--and a renewal of rivaly. Well the first problem with that is I did very little with the rivaly aspect--very hard to renew something that never existed.

The 6 team CL was going to announce 4 new teams--this way both leagues could go to 2 5 teams divisions. The CL would add 2 teams in "open" cities and 2 in MLB cities. The Buffalo Stallions and Hartford Hellions were the "open" additions. The Saint Louis Steamers were one of the MLB city addition. The other team to be added was the Detroit Lightining. The problem with this, of course, is the best team in the NAL is the Detroit Express--the All-Star game was in DET as thier reward for this. So I had this story that the CL would not be able to find investors in Milwaukee, Chicago or any midwest city; except Detroit. So there would be some cloak/dagger stuff with the owners/comissioners--but since I never bothered to create these characters, the whole thing would be pretty useless.

Oh yeah, and CIN was going to move to Wichita--which they try to keep secret from the people investing from Saint Louis and Detroit. Trust me, it's better this way.

07/04/1979--Trades

Independence Day marks the end of the All-Star break, so all the evaluations will take place today. 7 clubs are in the mood to deal: ATL, CLE, FL, MEM, MIN, NE and PHI. Of course, my cowardly GM doesn’t think a 9 game losing streak is reason to shake up the club.

ATL offers AAA P George Witt to MEM for AAA SS Houston Jimenez and AA 3B German Rivera. Accepted A move for both teams future. Witt is the best pitching prospect the Chiefs have (but very wild right now), but need some more pop from the INF. Rivera has good A/AA power numbers and Jimenez is, well, a body to make the deal work out.

CLE offers P Curt Raydon and C Del Wilber to NE for P Randy Kramer. Accepted NE continues to shed payroll for young pitching. Kramer could finally be the solid no. 2 to go with Paul Toth. Raydon has big upside and Wilber adds some vet leadership to the everyday line up.

FL offers 3B Skeeter Barnes to MIN for AAA P Chuck Seelbach and SS Al Pedrique. Rejected Strikers are lucky this was rejected--Pedrique is probably the worst .300 hitter in this universe--no power/speed/patience.

MEM offers 2B Al Federoff to PHI for AAA P Von McDaniel. Accepted PHI gets taken. In a panic to improve the INF offense, they take a bad 2B for a huge prospect.

MIN offers SS Al Pedrique to PHI for P John Verhoeven. Accepted Then they take the aforementioned worst .300 hitter for a very solid bullpen arm. Ok, ok, Federoff and Pedrique are upgrades from what they have now, but they should have gotten more. Thankfully (for NY) they do have (ratingswise) the worst GM in either league. Of course, I have the second worst GM (ratingswise) running my club.

NE offers 3B Bobby Etheridge to PHI for P Gary Ryerson. Rejected The deal the Fever should have made. Etheridge is a solid 2B/OBP guy and Ryerson is good, but still developing.

PHI offers 1B Benny Distafano and P Joel Johnston to CLE for SS Dave Rosello and C Joe Pigtanato. Rejected. With Wilber leaving, CLE can't afford to trade Pigtanato. Fever fail to complete the two good deals they had out there, but make the two bad ones instead. Still, they should have enough to win the CL now.

07/04/1979--ATL Evaluation

You know, it’s been so long since I’ve done one of these, I’ve got the sinking feeling I did this one wrong. Then again, I don’t think anyone would notice if I did do it wrong.

So the Chiefs have pulled themselves up by the bootstraps from their early season mediocrity to 4th place and just over .500. Not kidding themselves that they are “in the race” (3 out of 2nd, and 12 out of 1st) they did make a minor deal that was covered in the post above (“but,” you may say, “if you are planning on stopping after this season, why would you make a deal that wouldn’t pay off for 1 or 2 season?” I know it’s ending, you know its ending, but this universe, like our own, doesn’t know it’s ending.) They keep the best pitching in baseball intact, and try to find something, anything to score those runs. Actually, they have improved their scoring without increasing their steals, walks or HR. I don’t know how they did it either. C Bob Davis, INF Ed Jurak and OF Sil Campusano are sent back to AAA as a trio of familiar faces—OF Jim Wilhelm, INF Leo Thomas and C Bob Bulling head back to ATL.

Given their position—playing well but without the pressure of being in a race, the Chiefs will play around with the late inning combination. Kiely, Holman and Murphy will switch 8th and 9th inning roles as ATL sees what they’ve got for next year.

The line up has the same thought: Let’s find something that works better. Wilhelm and his glove, along with Leo Thomas move right into the line up, with Bulling getting most of the hacks against lefties. But I don’t know if this means more wins. They are doing that annoying “play Lovullo at SS” but they are slowly building a balanced attack—no one outstanding, but 6 or seven guys who do OK. With this pitching, only a little improvement is needed to win more often.

07/04/1979--CAL Evaluation

Oswald Cobblepot is a little too happy with his 6th place squad; making no roster changes—other than sending out reliever Ray Searage for a now healthy Glenn Elliott. Elliott is the 5th guy in a “how are they so bad” rotation.

Hy Logoleo does what he does every time we do this—move bodies around, kidding himself that suddenly, this will right the ship. Not a whole lot to say about the Surf right now.

This AM the thread hit 2000 views. That's 1770 more than I expected and 2000 more than I deserve! Thanks to all my readers; I may post for myself, but knowing people do drop by is nice to know.

07/04/1979--CIN Evaluation

Suddenly showing signs that they could contend, they make no moves with the resurgent pitching staff, but do tinker with the rest of the roster. OF Curt Motton, a power hitter who has shown no power and Jerry Scala, who just hasn’t provided the pop GM Lex Luthor craves are sent to AAA. C Art Kusnyer and OF Jose Herrera (his 2nd stint) are called up. Both those players have shown the ability to reach the seats at AAA.

Ok, they still have problems with the back end of the rotation; Eric Nolte and whoever else is back there inspire no fear, but the front end and pen is fairly solid. The offense has dropped off somewhat—Tuffy Rhodes is not providing the HR yet—but these guys can hit. And as long as the 2B and singles fall, they have a chance.

I guess the main result of the roster movement is Johnny Bero goes from a defensively substandard SS to an offensively substandard DH. Bill Hall will get more DH time (you wouldn’t think finding a DH would be so hard) and they actually have a decent defensive OF most of the time. If they keep this up, I’m looking at a 4th place finish.

This is the kind of thing that's so great about the way you do this, seth. These teams feel like they're being run by a person, yet you have no control over it, like you'd have to do without your system.

Even if this dynasty is doomed to end soon, I'm having fun reading.

Well, soon being at least 3-4 months. Still, I think the next one will be alot tighter and more fun for me (and by extension: you).

Yeah, I don't agree with my GM's all the time--and I really don't like the one running my team--but as I said when I was explaining how the system works--I think I'd use it even if OOTP had an even better GM AI than it does now. Each team has different philosophies, and, more important to me, I get to know each organization better than if the AI was running the whole show.

07/04/1979--CLE Evaluation

I’ve said all season that if the Force could find a no. 2 starter to go with Paul Toth, they could have a chance. Well, they have that no. 2 starter. Randy Kramer was miscast (and mispayed) by NE to anchor to the rotation; I think he will do much better as a support act—kind of like Jane Wiedlin. In the CL, any team not in HOU still has a chance to win—if they make the right move: this is a very good trade for CLE. Not only do they get a much needed starter, but Dan Graham will actually get some AB to show if all the desire for him early in the season was justified, now that Del Wilber is gone. Alan Wirth is sent to AAA to clear a spot for Kramer.

If your CLE, the best thing is this: you still have some young pitching to move if needed. The worst thing—I don’t know how the OF ever catches anything. Jim Mahoney (recalled from AAA) helps the INF defense; if only he could hit a little better. The one thing I can’t figure out about the Force is why Ken Macha has just disappeared. His OBP is great (.395), he has some power (.455 SLG) and somehow he’s losing playing time to a guy with a .895 FLDGPCT who is on base less and the same SLG? He can’t even get DH time over a guy with a .319 OBP and .428 SLG? Macha needs some AB’s or finding that No. 2 Starter won’t mean a thing.

07/04/1979--DET Evaluation

They have a 9 game lead with ½ a season to go. They have built this lead with as many as 4 opening day roster men on the DL. They are the best offensive club in either league and are one of the top pitching staffs in either league. And yet, I don’t know if they can keep it up. The types of players at this level are almost by definition, very inconsistent. But nothing seems to stop the Express. I don’t blame GM Hal Jordan for doing nothing with the roster—he didn’t panic when things looked bleak, why should he tinker with what is working?

They do the “new” closer thing—giving disappointing Jack Lazorko a shot, but for a club that has had 9 different starter and 6 different men record saves—this is nothing new. Yes, the back of the bullpen needs upgrading and we all know how I feel about CF Ellis Burton’s defense—but until these weaknesses lead to losses, everything is fine in DET.

07/04/1979--FL Evaluation

About, oh, 60 games or so ago, I thought FL was a contender for the NAL title. That was before 1) DET decided to run away and hide and 2) FL decided to have the worst pitching in the league. I admit, I was fooled because the Strikers were the kind of club offensively that I love—speedy, line drive hitters. However, speedy line drive hitters need to draw walks to win, and other than the LA Impotents, no one draws fewer walks. This is a club that should be following the MEM/NE model—dealing the overpaid vets for young arms. Well, they did try to deal 35 year old Skeeter Barnes, the club MVP, for a sack of garbage and a promise not be laughed at in public for making the deal, but apparently MIN GM Eric Strauss had a bout of guilt over stealing such a good player—must be that Lutheran ethic in the Twin Cities seeping into his blood. So other than switching out very bad Brian Denman for plain bad Doug Piatt, the roster stands firm. With half a season to go, they are on the brink of being 20 GB—they will be hard pressed to end the year less than 40 GB.

It would be an injustice if that brilliant line wasn't quoted. Hilarious.

07/04/1979--HOU Evaluation

Overall they are 15th in Batting Ave, Runs Scored, ERA, Opp. Ave., Walks allowed and runs allowed. And they don’t field the ball well either. I always felt the Tea Men were the worst club in either league, but the Summit have the statistical evidence to prove it. You’d think GM Buddy Baker would just want to blow the whole thing up and start all over. Instead he sends out P Karl Spooner, CF Jarvis Brown and INF Jose Martinez. Only the Martinez move makes sense—he is all kinds of bad. Spooner does get raked for a .296 OAVE, but he has control and for all the base runners, does not get up runs—plus a 24-year-old prospect should be getting inning with this club. And Jarvis Brown was as cold a Nome on Christmas day, but young struggling pitching staffs need defense behind them. At this point in the season, HOU is willing to make a move that has long-term negatives for short term, limited, positives. I might not be shaking my head as much if the call-ups were better. Tim Layana, in his first stint with the Summit had an ERA over 11.00; Johnny Schaive was worth only 2 PA his first stint; and—ok, Francisco Cabrera could be good—but I have my doubts.

So they have a legit No. 1 starter and a decent closer—after that I don’t know if anyone else on this staff should be around next season. Offensively they have a couple ok young hitters, but nothing to give even false hope. But, I suppose every league needs that top to bottom incompetent organization: the Warriors, the Bears, the D-Rays, the NHL; I submit that is the role of the Summit in this universe.

07/04/1979--LA Evaluation

I feel for GM Nate Adams. The Aztecs were caught in the middle of the NAL—not out of the race, but not really in it. They had a stellar pitching staff, and a huge hole at the catching position. So he shipped off a young expensive SP for two good hitting C’s. And it all fell apart on him. Instead of getting better, the club just kept sinking and sinking. The pitching, once one of the better staffs, has sunk to near the bottom of the league—while the already sputtering offense still hasn’t got on track. All told, Adams made a move (which I thought was ok, but could have been better) and destroyed his club—not realizing how important the innings Scipio Spinks gave them was. At least he understands where his club is now, and is going young—playing for next year and not ruining this year any more.

Manager Titus Mucklow is charged with making chicken feed out of chicken poo. He does throw out a decent looking line up—but defensively it could cause more damage than it cures. I mean, Harry Spilman is nice to have as a DH/IB—but starting him a 2B? You might as well not even have a guy out there. Pitching wise, Mucklow may have overacted to Kevin Wickander’s 2 BS in the last 3 games (with 5 BB and 5 H in his last 1.1 IP) is dropped from closer to plain old middle relief. Jim York, part of the kiddie corps, gets a shot to close. If the new blood does anything, they could poke up to .500, if not, well, FL may not finish last after all.
