Excellent draft for the Patriots. You can never have too many recievers, and by the sounds of things, that cornerback reminds me of a Ty Law. Should be an interesting couple of years for the Pats.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : TUESDAY APRIL 10, 1947
BASEBALL OFF-SEASON NEWS BRAVES DEAL YORK TO MAKE ROOM FOR ROOKIE TORGESON The Boston Braves pulled off the biggest deal of the offseason by sending 33 year old first baseman Rudy York to the Philadelphia Athletics for outfielder Sam Chapman and a minor leaguer. The move clears the way for rookie Earl Torgeson to become the Braves everyday first baseman. Boston had previously considered moving York to catcher, the position at which he began his major league career, in order to get Torgeson some at bats. However, Torgeson was outstanding at spring training and York struggled at the plate and looked uncomfortable behind it. York gives the Athletics a true power hitter but at age 33 his skills appear to be diminishing. York batted a career worst .206 last season while hitting 21 homers. A two time allstar, York returns to the American League after spending 4 and a half seasons with the Braves. He began his career with Detroit and was named American League rookie of the year in 1937. The trade of Chapman helps free up some playing time for young Philadelphia outfielders Elmer Valo and Wally Westlake. Chapman is 31 and coming off of a back injury that caused him to miss the last half of the 1946 season. Prior to his injury he was hitting just .202 but is a lifetime .250 hitter with a little pop in his bat. Also going to the Braves in the deal is minor league reliever Ted Abernathy, a 25 year old with no major league experience. The regular season opens Sunday with 1 game in each league. The Pirates entertain the Cardinals in the National League while in the junior circuit the St Louis Browns travel to New York to face the Yankees. Braves rookie Earl Torgeson makes his major league debut the next day in Brooklyn along with another highly touted newcomer - Jackie Robinson - who begins his career with Brooklyn. NFL DRAFT REVIEW BUCS AND COWBOYS ARE THE BIG WINNERS IN NFL DRAFT Syd Nyquist is back with part two of his draft recap. Today he looks at the NFC and has plenty of praise for the Bucs and Cowboys while he slings arrows at the Vikings and Eagles. Editors note: The Seattle Seahawks were mistakenly included in the AFC draft recap so they will not appear in this issue. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS : GRADE A+ Getting possibly the second coming of Sid Luckman in the NFL draft would be plenty for some teams but not Tampa Bay. The Bucs not only got a potential franchise player in Northwestern's Otto *Graham but they also nabbed Michigan DE Len *Ford with their second round pick. Ford had been rumoured as a possible first overall choice by Dallas before the Cowboys opted for George *Savitsky. The knock on Ford was his work ethic and a terrible performance in the combine. However, on the field for the Wolverines he demonstrated an incredible ability to get to the quarterback. With the exception of 5th round pick Roland Collins, a WR from California the rest of the Bucs draft does not look overly impressive. Other Tampa picks include center Dave Fadule from Illinois in the third round and Texas A&M safety Cory Owens in round 4. BOTTOM LINE - Getting Graham and Ford easily gives the Bucs the best draft class in the league. DALLAS COWBOYS : GRADE A+ A great draft for the Cowboys who wanted to shore up both the offensive and defensive lines. They accomplished both by selecting Pennsylvania DE George *Savitsky first overall and Army offensive tackle Tex *Coulter in the second round. Both will contribute immediately. It wasn't a position of need but safety Clint Strong from Utah was a huge value for a 4th round pick. The Cowboys took the best kicker in the draft when they selected Clemson's Wesley Hodgins in the 5th round. Running back Johnny *Clement, a third round pick from Southern Methodist, will take some of the workload off of Raymond Cash. BOTTOM LINE - Addressed some big needs and added quality talent. Only concern is will they regret passing on Otto Graham a few years from now. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS : GRADE A The Saints are deep at cornerback but Neil *Armstrong was too good to pass up. The former Oklahoma A&M star has outstanding potential. 2nd round pick Barney *Poole immediately gives the Saints a terrific complement for Bob Sommer. The wide receiver from Army will step in right away. The Saints had huge holes on the defensive line and at linebacker. While they did not solve their linebacking problems they may have added 3 starters for their defensive line. Ends Otis Thornton from Northern Arizona and Fabien Houston from Mississippi Valley and Colorado tackle Chuck Otto all may be in the starting lineup come week one. BOTTOM LINE - I love what the Saints did. They could have used a linebacker but Armstrong and Poole were far too good to bypass. With their 4th thru 6th round draft picks they revitalized their defensive line. WASHINGTON REDSKINS : GRADE A Defensive end Ben *Chase from Navy and Michigan cornerback Tommy *Harmon will step right into the starting lineup and should help a defense that was middle of the pack a year ago. Add in Clyde *Flowers from TCU, a tackle with decent potential, and guard Alex *Agase from Illinois and this was a tremendous draft for the Redskins. BOTTOM LINE : Solved two big needs with Chase and Harmon plus added depth to the offensive line. Great draft. GREEN BAY PACKERS : GRADE A- Second round pick Lance Saimes will have an immediate impact. The Notre Dame safety is already penciled into the Packers starting lineup and will be a big upgrade. The Packers will have to wait a little longer for first round pick Frank *Albert to have an impact but they feel the former Stanford signal-caller may be as good a pro as Otto Graham, who went two picks ahead of Albert. The rest of the draft the Packers focused on adding some depth to the defense and at running back. DE Obafemi Wheeler from Wayne State and LB Steve Mackey from Appalachian State help with the former while former Arkansas RB Don Porter will back up Tony *Canadeo. BOTTOM LINE - If Albert lives up to his potential he could be a star. Saimes should be a solid safety in the league for years. ARIZONA CARDINALS : GRADE B+ First round pick Hubert *Bechtol from Texas will likely be the Cards number one receiver once the season starts. Rich Vlasic from Georgia is the heir apparent to 11th year pro Paul Herman at left tackle. The Cards traded up to grab Vlasic in the second round. With a lack of talent in the secondary, 6th round pick Stan Long may get a chance to start at free safety. Running back Bobby Browner from Memphis may eventually challenge Tuffy *Leemans for the starting job. BOTTOM LINE - Bechtol was a good pick and adding Vlasic in the second round was a steal. CAROLINA PANTHERS : GRADE B First round pick Herman *Wedermeyer from St Mary's will challenge Keith Meade for the starting halfback role. With three second round picks the Panthers addressed some needs. Ex-Michigan guard Josh Crittendon has potential but needs some seasoning. Free safety Frank Reagan from Pennsylvania has a decent upside while the final second round selection, Georgia linebacker Gary Reich, may prove to be the best of the three. Third round pick Earl *Girard seems like a waste. The Wisconsin quarterback does not project to be any better than the 3 young qb's already on the roster. BOTTOM LINE - Not a bad draft as the Panthers addressed some key needs. DETROIT LIONS : GRADE B- The Lions traded down in each of the first three rounds and as a result ended up with 11 picks. Hometown boy Elmer *Mader of Michigan was the Lions first rounder and the 11th overall pick will step right into the starting lineup at defensive end. Armegis Baker of Virginia Tech has great work ethic and tremendous potential but he is far too raw a cornerback to be selected in the second round. The Lions also took Colston Brown from Tennessee in the 4th round and he will have an impact at corner far quicker than Baker. 3rd round pick Glen Collingsworth of Florida State was a wasted pick. He has the size to play guard in this league but has zero athletic ability. Former Heisman Trophy winner Doc *Blanchard of Army was taken in the third round. He gives QB Bob *Waterfield a dependable pass catching fullback. Bowling Green wide receiver Tim Bergey was selected in the 5th round. BOTTOM LINE - A decent draft except for a terrible decision on their second round pick. ST LOUIS RAMS : GRADE C+ Gave up their second rounder in order to move up and select CB Ken Murphy 5th overall. Murphy has the potential to be among the best covermen in the league. A great pick. Third rounder Burr *Baldwin needs some work, but the UCLA linebacker has great tools. 7th round pick Rodney Jackson from William & Mary adds depth at defensive tackle BOTTOM LINE : Murphy alone gives the Rams a passing grade. NEW YORK GIANTS : GRADE C Selected tight end Pete *Pihos third overall and while there is no questioning the former Indiana Hoosier's ability many are scratching their heads wondering why the Giants did not address a bigger need. Just about everyone had New York taking QB Frank *Albert with the third pick and quarterback is a huge question mark for the Giants. They did select Alabama signal caller Harry *Gilmer with thier second round pick but he is not the franchise qb this team desperately needs. The rest of the draft was spent on defense with strong safety Quentin Holmes from Louisville being the best of the bunch. 7th round pick Mike Hayes, a free safety from Kansas State, is a player to watch as is 4th rounder James Brown, a defensive tackle from Marshall. BOTTOM LINE - Would have been far better off grabbing Albert in round one. That being said Pihos does have a huge upside but without a great QB the Giants are in big trouble because their running game is not that strong. CHICAGO BEARS : GRADE C The defending champs did not have a lot of weak areas so they could draft for the future. First round pick Tom *Hughes, a local boy from Purdue, will be eased into the starting lineup over the next couple of seasons. Northwestern's Jim *Keane couldn't ask for better. He goes from being Otto Graham's favourite target to catching passes from Sid Luckman. Keane will likely be 4th on the Bears depth chart. The Bears stuck with the local theme by taking Indiana defensive tackle John *Tavener in the third round and Northwestern offensive lineman Charlie Thomas in the 7th. BOTTOM LINE - Not a great draft for the Bears as only Hughes seems to have big potential. ATLANTA FALCONS : GRADE C It was not a position of need but Wake Forest strong safety Red *Cochran was too good to pass up at pick 6. It may take a season or two but Ohio State's Warren *Amling has the potential to be an allpro offensive tackle. Maryland defensive end Cecil Jackson, the Falcons third rounder, may start as a rookie if he has a good camp. 6th rounder Joe Huber, a guard from Northern Iowa, is a player to watch. BOTTOM LINE - A decent draft but the Falcons failed to address some key needs at linebacker and wide receiver. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS : GRADE C A decent draft for the 49ers. First rounder Don Schlereth was an outstanding receiver at Oklahoma and that should translate into the pros. Northwestern DT Mike Crockett saw his stock rise in the week before the draft and he was taken in the second round. Third round cornerback Monty Jones from Northern Arizona adds depth to the secondary. In the 5th round the 49ers added the best punter in the draft by taking Maryland's Jeff Farr. 7th round pick SS Willie Mutcheller from South Florida is a sleeper to watch. BOTTOM LINE - A decent draft for the 49ers but aside from Schlereth did not get any potential impact players. MINNESOTA VIKINGS : GRADE C- The Vikings traded away their third round pick to move up four spots and draft Columbia quarterback Paul *Governali 7th overall. Governali will compete with second year man Jim Elliot and incumbant Stephen Pagel for the starting job. He has a lot of potential but is raw. That previous sentence could also describe second round pick Bill *Hatchen. The California offensive guard will need a lot of coaching if he is to be a force on the Vikings line. Wide receiver Derrius Bruce, a 5th rounder from Tennessee, will see some action as a rookie. The rest of the Vikings picks were used on running backs will Temple's Lamar Porter having the best chance to make an impact. BOTTOM LINE - Governali may become a star but the rest of the draft was mediocre. The Vikings were ranked last in defense a year ago yet failed to make a single draft pick on the defensive side of the ball. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES : GRADE D Selected Harold *Fischer in the first round and Paul *Duke in the second but both defensive linemen have question marks. Fischer, from Southwestern(LA) is a pass rushing threat at DE but can't stop the run while Georgia Tech's Duke at 6'1" may be undersized to play DT. Third round pick Al *Sparlis, a linebacker from UCLA seems to be a career back up at best and using a 4th rounder on UCLA QB Carlos Jones seemed to be a waste. Offensive tackle Jeff Gilliam, a 7th round selection from Kansas, may be the Eagles best value. BOTTOM LINE : A terrible draft for a team that was one or two players away from perhaps a title bid. They needed to upgrade the offensive line but ignored it until the 7th round. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE STANLEY CUP FINALS BEGIN TONIGHT IN DETROIT Game one of the Stanley Cup finals is set for tonight at The Olympia in Detroit with the hometown Red Wings a heavy favourite to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Red Wings dominated the regular season taking 8 out of their 12 games against the Maple Leafs. Detroit goaltender Harry Lumley is playing his best hockey of the year and rugged forward Ted Lindsay has been on a tear. The Wings have two outstanding lines in the Sid Abel-Lindsay-Gary Couture trio along with Billy Taylor between Roy and Jim Conacher. Leafs goaltender Turk Broda had a great round against the Rangers and Broda has plenty of playoff experience. Toronto also can score with Ted Kennedy, Bill Ezinicki and rookie Howie Meeker all playing quite well. However, if Lumley stays hot the Red Wings will be just a little too much for the Leafs. PREDICTION: Detroit in 6 games Here is a list of past Cup winners since the NHL assumed full control of the trophy: Code:
YEAR WINNER RUNNER-UP GAMES 1946 Montreal Canadiens Boston Bruins 4-1 1945 Toronto Maple Leafs Detroit Red Wings 4-3 1944 Montreal Canadiens Chicago Black Hawks 4-0 1943 Detroit Red Wings Boston Bruins 4-0 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs Detroit Red Wings 4-3 1941 Boston Bruins Detroit Red Wings 4-0 1940 New York Rangers Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 1939 Boston Bruins Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1 1938 Chicago Black Hawks Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 1937 Detroit Red Wings NY Rangers 3-2 1936 Detroit Red Wings Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 1935 Montreal Maroons Toronto Maple Leafs 3-0 1934 Chicago Black Hawks Detroit Red Wings 3-1 1933 New York Rangers Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1 1932 Toronto Maple Leafs NY Rangers 3-0 1931 Montreal Canadiens Chicago Black Hawks 3-2 1930 Montreal Canadiens Boston Bruins 2-0 1929 Boston Bruins NY Rangers 2-0 1928 New York Rangers Montreal Maroons 3-2 1927 Ottawa Senators Boston Bruins 2-0-2 BOMBERS AND KNICKERBOCKERS DECIDING GAME TONIGHT Tonight will mark the end of the season for either the St Louis Bombers or the New York Knickerbockers as they play the deciding game in their best of three quarter-final series. The New Yorkers took the opener on their homecourt before St Louis evened the series at home Sunday. The deciding game will be played in St Louis this evening with the winner moving on to face the Philadelphia Warriors in a best-of-3 semi-final. The Warriors swept Cleveland in 2 games in a quarter-final series. The other semi-final is a best of seven between the two division champions. The Chicago Stags look to get in the win column as they return home after losing the first two games to the Capitols in Washington. The Capitols will be undermanned as guard Freddie Scolari and center John Mahnken will each miss the game after suffering injuries in game 2. Both are expected to miss at least 2 games. Scolari is the Capitols second highest scorer and it will be tough to replace the 13.7 points per game he averaged. The job of doing so will likely fall to Irv Torgoff, a backup small forward who will shift to guard tonight. Bob Gantt will get plenty of playing time in Mahnken's absense.

STANLEY CUP FINALS LEAFS SHOCK RED WINGS 5-0 IN GAME ONE Syl Apps scored a pair of goals and Turk Broda turned aside all 36 shots as the Toronto Maple Leafs embarassed the Detroit Red Wings 5-0 in Game One of the Stanley Cup Finals. The hometown Red Wings failed to capitalize on any of their 6 power play opportunities and aside from a 15 minute stretch to start the second period looked totally outclassed. The Leafs scored the only goal of the first period when Vic Lynn bulged the twine behind Red Wing goaltender Harry Lumley at the 8 minute mark. Despite having 8 minutes of powerplay time the Red Wings managed just 9 shots in the period. Detroit looked good for the first 15 minutes of the second period and had numerous chances to tie the game but Leaf goaltender Turk Broda stood his ground. In the final three minutes of the second period the Leafs put the game away with goals from Gaye Stewart and Apps. Toronto would add two more in the third period and Broda would shut the door to earn his second shutout of the playoffs. Game 2 is tomorrow night in Detroit with games 3 and 4 in Toronto on the weekend. Code:

Max Zaslofsky led the Chicago attack with 17 points while Chuck Halbert added 14. Washington was missing two starters as guard Freddie Scolari and center John Mahnken each was sidelined with an injury. Irv Torgoff was outstanding filling in for Scolari but the absence of the big man Mahnken really hurt the Caps. Scolari is expected to miss two more games while Mahnken could be out for the entire series. Code:

Augusta was chosen as the site. There Jones and Alistair MacKenzie, a Scottish golf architect, laid out the Augusta National Golf Club, a course distinguished by "strategic" design, requiring thought and planning by the golfer, in addition to technical skill. The course opened in 1933 and hosted the Augusta National Invitation Tournament in March of 1934. With first-place money of $1,500, the event attracted an outstanding field of golfers, most of whom praised the new layout highly, and it was immediately decided that the tournament would be held annually. It became known as the Masters' Invitation Tournament in its second year. Now the Masters is considered the crown jewel of the PGA tour and the first leg of the newly coined "Grand Slam" which also includes the US Open, British Open and the PGA Championship. Ben Hogan is the defending champion after carding a 9 under par 279 last year, good enough to finish 3 strokes ahead of Herman Keiser and Lawson Little. First place money this year will be $2,500 with a staggering total purse available of more than $22,000. EDITOR'S NOTE - I found a site today that gives me realistic golf prize money for the era so I have edited the winnings from the first event to be more in line with real life. Code:

Bivins, a 28 year old from Cleveland is ranked 7th in the world and has a postwar record of 28-3 including 18 knockouts. His most recent bout, last September, was a unanimous decision loss to number one ranked lightheavyweight contender Archie Moore. Bivins opponent is also a strong fighter. Johnson, a 20 year old from Philadelphia, is 27-6 and ranked 10th in the lightheavyweight division. His handlers are looking at this as being the fight that puts on Johnson on the map. The fight was delayed for a couple of months as both sides squabbled over the venue until it was agreed that the neutal site of Pittsburgh would work well for both fighters. Bivins camp had demanded the bout be held in Cleveland almost to the point of it being cancelled. MARSHALL TO DEFEND LIGHTHEAVYWEIGHT CROWN MAY 2 IN CLEVELAND While Jimmy Bivins could not get a fight setup in his hometown, fellow Cleveland native Lloyd Marshall's handler's have announced the World Lightheavyweight Champion will defend his title Wednesday May 2 at the Cleveland Stadium. The 33 year old Marshall will make his first title defense against New Orleans native Henry Hall. Hall, a 24 year old, has a lifetime record of 19-13-3 and should provide little challenge for Marshall. Most are viewing this just as an easy payday for the champ before he meets either Billy Conn or Archie Moore in the fall. One other bout was announced for Ohio. Cincinnati native and top heavyweight contender Ezzard Charles will fight Clarence Henry at Cincinnati's Crosley Field on Friday May 4th. Charles is 19-1 with his only loss coming to undefeated World Champion Joe Louis. Henry has a career record of 20-5-1. One of the 22 year old Los Angeles natives losses was a second round TKO at the hands of Joe Louis during the post-war unification tournament. The fight had originally been scheduled for the following week but was moved up due to a conflict with baseball's Cincinnati Reds.

BIVINS PULLS OUT VICTORY WITH 14TH ROUND TKO Highly touted Lightheavyweight Jimmy Bivins looked in danger of losing to 20 year old upstart Harold Johnson until the the veteran fighter struck with a flurry of punches late in the 14th round. With just two seconds remaining in the fight the referee called it. Many in the crowd booed as it was obvious Johnson was ahead on points but the youngster was also out on his feet and defenseless when the decision to stop the bout was made. With the TKO Bivins improves to 29-3 and appears to be in line for a shot at the Lightheavyweight title, perhaps as early as next year. BUSY DAY AND NIGHT AHEAD While yesterday was extremely quiet today and tonight promise plenty of excitement in the sports world. In golf, the Masters tees off this morning in Augusta, Georgia. Ben Hogan is the defending champion. In the NHL, it's game two of the Stanley Cup finals between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs took the opener 5-0. Meanwhile in basketball it's game four of the Washington-Chicago semi-final from the Windy City. The Capitols lead the best of seven series two games to one but will once again be without two key players. Center John Mahnken and guard Freddie Scolari are sidelined with injuries. The other semi-final, a best of three affair, tips off at Madison Square Garden as the New York Knickerbockers host Philadelphia. Looking a little further ahead it's just 3 more days until baseball season begins.

STANLEY CUP FINALS TAYLOR'S 4 POINT NIGHT HELPS WINGS EVEN SERIES Billy Taylor had two goals and two assists to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 7-4 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at The Olympia, evening their best of seven Stanley Cup final at one victory apiece. The Leafs struck first when Gaye Stewart gave them a 1-0 lead just 1:25 into the game. Detroit fought back with 3 first period goals including a pair from Roy Conacher and in the second period increased their lead to 5-1 on goals from Taylor and rookie Gordie Howe's first career playoff tally. The Leafs did not fold however as Stewart's second of the game came before the second period ending and Ted Kennedy cut the Red Wing lead to 5-3 early in the third. With 4 and half minutes left Harry Watson had the sold out crowd in Detroti fidgeting when he made it a 1-goal game. The Leafs pressed for the equalizer, pulling goaltender Turk Broda in the final minute. The move backfired when Pete Horeck scored into an empty-net making it 6-4 Red Wings. Taylor would ice it with his second goal of the game with just one second to play. Game three is set for Saturday in Toronto with the fourth game the following night also at Maple Leaf Gardens. Code:

UNDERMANNED CAPITOLS ROLL OVER STAGS Bob Feerick certainly made up for the absence of his backcourt mate Freddie Scolari in the Washington Capitols game at Chicago. Feerick scored 26 points to lead Washington to a 73-63 victory and a 3 games to one lead over the Stags in their best of seven semi-final series. Horace McKinney was the only other Washington player in double figures. He had 11 points. Both Scolari and center John Mahnken are expected to miss at least one more game. The Capitols can wrap up the series with a victory in Chicago on Saturday. Code:

DEFENDING CHAMPION HOGAN TAKES FIRST DAY LEAD Ben Hogan picked up yesterday right where he left off last spring in Augusta. The defending champion shot a 6 under par 66 and has the lead at the end of Thursday action in the Masters. Von Klaveren will defend the title in his hometown of Rotterdam. He won the title, which had been vacant during WWII, with an unanimous decision over Finland's Yrjo Piitulainen last November. With a 21-9-1 record, this will be Van Klaveren's first title defense. The 37 year old is considered the 8th best welterweight fighter in the world rankings. His opponent is just 20 years old. Curvis, with a lifetime record of 18-8-5, won the British championship from Ernie Roderick last September. His victory was a mild shock as Curvis has lost badly to the two 'name' fighters he has faced in his young career: Jackie Wilson and Kid Galivan.

GOLF : THE MASTERS LITTLE KNOWN LEE MACKEY JR. TAKES THE LEAD A relative unknown former club pro from Birmingham, Alabama has the lead halfway through what is arguably the greatest tournament in golf. Lee Mackey Jr. shot a 5 under 67 to lower his score to -8 after Friday's action. Defending champion Ben Hogan remains hot on his heels after shooting a 71 yesterday to finish at -7. From there it is a star-studded cast as course host Bobby Jones Jr. is at 6 under while Byron Nelson and Sam Snead sit at 5 under par. Also tied at -5 is Johnny Bulla. Among those missing the cut were last week's winner at Greensboro Dai Rees and amateur Bob *Rosburg, who finished second at that event. Below are the 31 golfers who made the cut. A side note. Perhaps Mackey is going to make up for his claim to fame. In the 1950 US Open Mackey set an Open record with a round of 64 on the first day. After being up all night unable to sleep because he was so excited to be leading the Open Mackey shot an 81 the next day and faded back into obscurity. Ben Hogan would end up winning that event. Former Yale defensive end Paul *Walker is considered a long shot to make the team. The Panthers also signed a familiar name when they inked Tulane QB Jack Hasselbeck. Hasselbeck is the younger brother of Arizona All-Pro safety Booker Hasselbeck. One of 7 quarterback's invited to camp, Hasselbeck is unlikely to make the NFL. While on the topic of quarterbacks, Tampa's number one pick Otto *Graham spent most of the week familiarizing himself with the Bucs playbook in preparation for mini-camp in early May. COLLEGE FOOTBALL OFFSEASON NEWS QUARTERBACKS LAYNE AND LUJACK ARE TOP HEISMAN CANDIDATES With spring practice just around the corner it is never to early to start thinking about college football. Army no longer looks like the team to beat after the Cadets lost 8 players, including 3 first rounders, to the NFL and graduation. With senior quarterback Johnny *Lujack once again under center, Notre Dame looks like it may have a clear path to the National Championship. One school that may have something to say about that is the University of Texas and their outstanding quarterback Bobby *Layne. Other schools to watch include the always dangerous Michigan and North Carolina which still looks strong despite the graduation of QB DeMarco Dickinson, a third round pick of the Buffalo Bills. Southern Methodist has a terrific sophomore running back by the name of Doak *Walker and they may give Texas fits in the Southwest Conference. Early Heisman Candidates include the previously mentioned Lujack, Lane and Walker along with Mississippi QB Charlie *Conerly, Alabama halfback Harry *Gilmer and wide receivers Tom *Fears of UCLA and Bill *Swiacki from Columbia. NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE AND BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA PLENTY OF PLAYOFF ACTION TONIGHT The Stanley Cup Finals resume this evening in Toronto as the Leafs host Detroit in Game 3. The two clubs split the first two games in Detroit. In basketball semi-final action Washington and New York both look to clinch a berth in the finals on the road tonight. The Capitols lead Chicago 3 games to one in their best of 7 series while New York has a one game lead on Philadelphia in their best of three semi-final. BOXING VAN KLAVEREN RETAINS EUROPEAN WELTERWEIGHT TITLE In boxing action, Netherlands fight Bep Van Klaveren defeated British champ Cliff Curvis in Amsterdam to retain the European Welterweight Title. It was a tight fight throughout with Van Klaveren winning by 2 points on two judges cards while the third judge, from Britian, had the bout scored dead even.

TIGERFAN'S SPORTING DAILY : SUNDAY APRIL 15, 1947
PLAY BALL! OPENING DAY TODAY The 1947 major league baseball season gets underway today with a game in each league. In Pittsburgh, the defending National League champions will host the visiting St Louis Cardinals. Cliff Melton, who has 4 Cy Young Awards to his credit including the one he earned last season, starts on the hill for the Pirates. The 35 year old enjoyed the best season of his career in 1946, when he went 28-11 with a 2.28 era. His opponent will be Cardinals ace Ernie White who was 22-11 a year ago. In the American League the New York Yankees will play host to the St Louis Browns. St Louis will start 33 year old Tom Baker on the mound. Baker was 19-11 last season for the Brownies and made the first allstar appearance of his career. The Yankees counter with Max Lanier, who was 17-11 last season. GOLF: THE MASTERS STAR STUDDED SUNDAY AHEAD AT AUGUSTA Three of the biggest names in golf are seperated by just one stroke heading into today's final round at The Masters. Defending champion Ben Hogan and veteran Sam Snead are tied for the lead at 9 under par with the dean of Augusta, the incomparable Bobby Jones Jr. just one stroke off the pace. Lee Mackay Jr., who had the lead after Friday's round, shot a 73 yesterday and is still in the hunt. Code:

The win gives Detroit a two games to one lead in the best of seven Stanley Cup Final. Toronto took a 3-1 lead in the first period and looked to be in complete control as the two clubs battled through a very defensive minded second stanza. The score remained 3-1 until Ted Lindsay got his second goal of the game for the Red Wings with just under 7 minutes to play. Detroit picked up the pace after that goal and peppered Leafs netminder Turk Broda until Billy Taylor finally managed to get the equalizer by jamming a rebound past the sprawling Toronto goaltender with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Abel's game winner came just 6 minutes into the extra frame and was assisted by rookie Gordie Howe and defenseman Bill Quakenbush. Game four is tomorrow night in Toronto. Code:

Here is the link http://www.tabletop-sports.com/modul...ownload&sid=65 The game includes ratings for players over the last 3 or 4 years but I had to create the 1940's players and some of the courses myself. Not perfectly accurate, especially since so little in the way of stats from the era are available. Still it seems to work out okay as I seem have the right guys winning most of the tournaments.

GOLF - THE MASTERS HOGAN WINS SECOND STRAIGHT GREEN JACKET For the second year in a row Ben Hogan has won the Masters Title. Hogan birdied four straight holes to start the back nine en route to a 5 under 67 Sunday giving him an easy 3 stroke win over Bobby Jones Jr. His 72 hole total of 14 under 274 is the lowest ever recorded in the event. The victory earns Hogan $2500 first place cheque. The PGA tour takes a week off before beginning a swing through the Southwest and California. The next stop is The Greater New Orleans Invitational April 26th thru 29th. Code:

The reigning Cy Young Award winner scattered 5 hits over 8 innings to help lead his Bucs to a 4-2 victory over visiting St Louis in the National League season opener. Melton had a bit of a shaky start as the first batter he faced, Hoot Evers, ripped a lead-off homer down the right field line. The Pirates answered in the home half of the first inning as 3B Bill Elliott hit a 2-run double to give Pittsburgh the lead. Three singles from St Louis in the third allowed the Cardinals to tie the game but then Melton settled down and did not allow another hit through his final 5 innings of work. Veteran catcher Tom Padden and shortstop Arky Vaughn each hit solo homers off Cardinals starter Ernie White to make it 4-2. Alex Carrasquel retired the final 3 St Louis batters in order for his 10th career save. Melton was named the player of the game. BROWNS WIN PITCHING DUEL WITH 9TH INNING RUN 32 year old shortstop Sig Gryska was the opening day hero for the St Louis Browns as he hit a solo homerun with two out in the top of the ninth to give the Browns a 1-0 victory over New York at Yankee Stadium. Despite a 42 minute rain delay in the third inning, St Louis pitcher Tom Baker went the distance allowing just 7 hits. Bill Bevens took the loss as he was the last of New York's 4 pitchers including starter Max Lanier. Lanier gave up 5 hits in 7 innings of work. Gryska and St Louis catcher Hank Riebe each had 2 hits on the day, the same as New York's Billy Johnson. BRAVES DEAL RIZZUTO TO CUBS In an attempt to upgrade a woeful pitching staff the Boston Braves have traded shortstop Phil Rizzuto to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for pitcher Ken Raffensberger. The 29 year old lefthander will likely fit into the number two slot in the Braves rotation behind another solid lefty in young Warren Spahn. Raffensberger has spent 7 seasons with the Cubs, going 14-13 a year ago with a 3.41 era. He won a career high 19 games two seasons ago and made his only allstar appearance. The Braves also get minor league pitcher Ed Chandler in the deal. Rizzuto joins his third team as he spent 3 and a half years with the Yankees before the trade to Boston 2 and a half seasons ago. The 29 year old is very gifted with the glove and batted a solid .276 a year ago. He does not have great speed but will likely bat lead-off for the Cubs. Rizzuto is expected to be in the lineup when the Cubs open their season tomorrow at Wrigley against the St Louis Cardinals. TODAY'S GAMES Jackie Robinson will make his major league debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers today at Ebbetts Field against the Boston Braves. Robinson will become the first African-American to play in the major leagues. The game will also mark the major league debut of Braves first round pick Earl Torgeson. Here is the complete schedule and pitching matchups with last year's record for each of the hurlers. AMERICAN LEAGUE St Louis (Archie McKain 13-14) at New York (Tiny Bonham 25-7) NATIONAL LEAGUE Boston (Warren Spahn 15-18) at Brooklyn (Rex Barney 2-0) St Louis (Al Jurisch 7-8) at Pittsburgh (Ken Heintzelman 19-14) STANLEY CUP FINALS LEAFS EVEN SERIES WITH 3-2 VICTORY The Toronto Maple Leafs parlayed goals in the final minute of both the first and second periods into a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings and in the process evened the best of seven Stanley Cup Final at two games apiece. Bud Poile and Gaye Stewart each had a goal and an assist to lead the Leafs. Detroit struck first as Billy Taylor made a nice individual effort to make it 1-0 Red Wings just over 5 minutes into the game. Toronto replied with 2 goals in a 46 second span late in the opening period. Syl Apps got the first one when he redirected a Bill Ezinicki pass Detroit goaltender Harry Lumley and Poile gave the Leafs the lead on the next shift when he and Stewart combined for a goal. The second period was scoreless until Poile set up Stewart with just 22 seconds to play giving the Leafs an insurance goal they would end up needing. Early in the third Sid Abel cut the Leafs lead to 3-2 but Detroit could not get the equalizer past Leaf netminder Turk Broda. Game five is Tuesday night at The Olympia in Detroit. Code:

Interesting to see Raffensberger dealt. In my alternate baseball history (starting in 1931 with new franchises after the original MLB folded) he became one of the top pitchers in history, ultimately making the Hall of Fame. I just finished the 1982 season and he still ranks 5th all time in wins (295), 6th in ERA (2.66), 3rd in winning % (.678), 2nd in shutouts (49) and 4th in strikeouts (3,402). He won 3 World Series (1 WS MVP), 7 Cy Young Awards and made 11 All-Star appearances. I just noticed that he was drafted in the 4th round (41st overall).. so pretty good career for that low of a pick.

One of the big problems Raffensberger ran into in my league is the Cubs could never decide what to do with him. After a decent rookie season he lost his job in the rotation in his second season to Paul Erickson. However, injuries to other Cubs hurlers allowed him to make 16 starts that year. He couldn't crack the rotation the next three years and split his time between the bullpen and AAA. In '45 he regained his spot in the rotation and made the allstar team while winning 19 games. That still did not earn him any respect with the Cubs brass as he was allowed to make just 24 starts last season because for some unknown reason the Cubs wanted journeyman Clyde Shoun in the rotation. The deal to the Braves may be the best thing for his career, and having just turned 29, he still has plenty of good years left.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ROBINSON BREAKS THE COLOR BARRIER AND GOES DEEP All eyes were on Jackie Robinson as he made his major league debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers at home against the Boston Braves yesterday. A hush fell over the crowd when Boston starting pitcher Warren Spahn plunked Robinson, the Dodgers leadoff man, in the ribs with his third pitch to the rookie. However, Robinson dusted himself off and trotted down to first without a glance at the Braves hurler. In the second inning, Robinson would get his revenge. He would drill a 3-run homer to leftfield for his first major league hit and help the Dodgers to a 6-5 victory over the Braves. It was not an easy win though as Brooklyn scored 5 runs in the second inning only to see the Braves tie the game up 2 rbi's from Jimmy Brown and a double and a triple from catcher Phil Masi that each drove in a run. It was a sweet feeling for both Masi and Brown, neither of whom figured to be in the opening day lineup just a couple of weeks ago. However, trades that sent Phil Rizzuto and Rudy York out of town cleared the way for the two of them. Boston came up short in their comeback as the Dodgers plated the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on an rbi single from Stan Hack off of Ken Holcombe. Holcombe was tagged with the loss while Mickey Harris, in relief of Rex Barney, got the win. Braves rookie first baseman Earl Torgeson went 0-for-5 in the game. In other action: The St Louis Browns blanked the New York Yankees for the second straight day. Cookie Lavagetto had 3 hits and drove in a run to help the Browns to a 3-0 win over the Yankees. 35 year old Archie McKain went 8 and 2/3 innings allowing just 6 New York hits. Bob Muncrief came on in relief to retire the final batter. Tiny Bonham went the distance, allowing 9 hits, to take the loss. The loss was twice as tough for the Yankees who lost gold glove winning catcher Bob Scheffing for 4-6 weeks with a dislocated shoulder suffered during a collison with George McQuinn at homeplate. The injury leaves the Yankees with Mike Garbark and Aaron Robinson available to catch. Between them the two 31-year olds have combined to play in just 72 major league games. In the lone National League contest, catcher Walker Cooper had 4 hits including a pair of homeruns to lead the St Louis Cardinals past the Pirates in Pittsburgh 8-2. The Cards rapped out 13 hits including 2 each from Ben Chapman, Stan Musial, Marty Marion and George Scharein. Al Jurisch allowed just 5 Pittsburgh hits in getting the complete game victory. The loss went to Ken Heintzelman who seemed to be pitching out of a jam all game. TODAY'S SCHEDULE (1946 record in brackets) AMERICAN LEAGUE Boston (Andy Karl 21-10) at Washington (Joe Haynes 21-15) New York (Dizzy Dean 7-9) at Detroit (Fred Hutchinson 17-17) Philadelphia (Fred Caliguiri 3-2) at Chicago (Fred Biscan 10-10) St Louis (Al Williams 12-10) at Cleveland (Bill Lohrman 19-8) NATIONAL LEAGUE St Louis (George Dockins 0-0) at Chicago (Vern Olsen 15-16) Philadelphia (Hugh Mulcahy 10-9) at New York (Dave Koslo 17-18) Cincinnati (Arnold Carter 18-15) at Pittsburgh (Preacher Roe 14-16) HOCKEY AND BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS RESUME TONIGHT There is plenty of exciting playoff action this even. The Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs are preparing for game 5 in their best of seven Stanley Cup Finals. The series is tied at two wins apiece after the Leafs hung on for a 3-2 win in Game Four on Sunday. Tonight's game is in Detroit. In basketball the New York Knickerbockers and Philadelphia Warriors play the deciding game in their best of three semi-final series. The Knicks took the opener at home before falling in overtime at Philadelphia on Saturday. The other semi-final is a best of seven series and it has Washington leading Chicago 3 games to two. The Stags avoided elimination with a win at home Saturday but to prevail in the series they will need victories in Washington tonight and tomorrow. The Capitols expect guard Freddie Scolari to dress tonight after missing 3 games with an injury. Center John Mahnken is not ready to return to the Washington lineup. BOXING NEWS WORLD BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMP TO DEFEND TITLE VS EUROPEAN CHAMP Fernando Gagnon, the bantamweight boxing champion of the world, has announced that he will defend his title against European champion Luis Romero. The fight will take place on Friday May 11 in Montreal which makes it a hometown fight for the champion who hails from a small town in Quebec. The 26 year old Gagnon is 32-3-1 with 27 knockouts. He won the world championship with a unanimous decision over Manny Ortiz after previously losing and fighting to a draw against Ortiz. This will be Gagnon's first title defense. Romero, also 26, is from Arclia, Spain and sports a record of 20-6-1. He has 13 knockouts to his credit including one over Italian Guido Ferracin in October that won Romero the European title. Romero and Gagnon have not met before but Romero did fight against Manuel Ortiz a year ago. The result was a 6th round knockout victory for the American. While on the topic of bantamweights I will mention a pair of contenders for Gagnon's title will meet in England on Wednesday. Gus Foran of Liverpool faces Warsaw, Poland native Benny Goldberg in a non-title fight. The winner will be next in line to face Romero for the European belt.

STANLEY CUP FINALS SID ABEL'S WINGS TO TAKE SERIES LEAD Detroit Red Wing center Sid Abel scored a pair of third period goals to give his club a come from behind 3-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Wings lead the series 3 games to two and can hoist the Stanley Cup with a victory in Toronto on Thursday. Abel has 4 goals in the last three games including the overtime winner in Game Three. The Wings outshot Toronto 23-10 in the opening period but managed just one goal, a power play marker from Roy Conacher. It was just the second goal in 18 man advantage situations for Detroit. The Leafs looked much better in the second period and managed to score twice to take the lead. However, Detroit came out flying to start the third and 22 seconds into the period Gus Mortson was forced to haul down Billy Taylor to prevent a scoring chance. Sid Abel scored the first of his two goals of the game on the ensuing power play and just over a minute later Abel made it 3-2 Detroit on a nice 3-way passing play with Pete Horeck and rookie Gordie Howe. The Leafs came close a couple of times but could not get the equalizer past Detroit goalie Harry Lumley. Code:

CAPITOLS AND KNICKERBOCKERS TO MEET IN FINALS The Washington Capitols and New York Knickerbockers will meet to determine the BAA champion after both clubs completed semi-final series victories last night. Washington, with guard Freddie Scolari back in the lineup and scoring 11 points, had little trouble eliminating Chicago 76-56. The Capitols had the best regular season record in the league and took care of Chicago in 6 games. The Knickerbockers, on the other hand, had the worst record of the 6 playoff teams. After beating St Louis 2 games to one in the best of three quarterfinal they dumped Philadelphia in the exact same manner - winning game 3 on the road. The final score was 69-65 despite a 24 point effort from Philadelphia's Joe Fulks. The best of seven final will begin Saturday evening in Washington. Code:

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL ROE SPINS ONE HIT SHUTOUT FOR BUCS Preacher Roe threw a 1-hit shutout as the Pittsburgh Pirates blanked Cincinnati 1-0 in National League action. The 32 year old lefthander fanned 5 while walking just 2 Reds batters. The only Cincinnati hit was a 4th inning leadoff single off the bat of Joe Medwick but he was promptly retired by a doubleplay ball. Reds starting pitcher Arnold Carter was also sharp, allowing just 7 Pittsburgh hits including 3 to centerfielder Fern Bell. The only run was scored when Pirates rightfielder Jim Russell led off the fourth inning with a walk. Russell moved to third on a Ralph Kiner single and then scored on a Bob Elliott ground out. The other two National League games both featured late inning heroics from the visiting team. In Chicago, Stan Musial hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th to give St Louis a 4-2 win over the hometown Cubbies while in New York the Phillies rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth to nip the Giants 6-5. With two out in the top of the ninth Giants reliever Rube Fischer walked Bobby Estalella. A Del Ennis triple, a double from pinch-hitter Ron Northey and an rbi single from Pete Suder quickly gave the Phils the lead for the first time in the game. No late inning heroics in the American League but there was a terrific pitching performance. On the day the Cleveland Indians received their World Series rings, Tribe ace Bill Lohrman tossed a 6-hit shutout as Cleveland blanked St Louis 3-0. After shutting out the Yankees twice it was the first time the Browns had allowed a run this season. Charlie English drove in two runs for Cleveland. Elsewhere Chet Laabs had 2 hits and drove in a pair of runs as Philadelphia beat the White Sox 5-4 in Chicago. Former Brave Rudy York had a hit and scored a run in his Athletic's debut. Home runs from infielders Billy Johnson, Jack Boiling and Calvin Chapman gave the New York Yankees their first win of the season, 6-3 over Detroit. Dizzy Dean allowed 6 hits over 8 innings for the victory. Dean hopes that last year's 16-7 record was not a fluke and he is fully recovered from the many arm problems that have plagued him throughout his career. A 25 game winner back in 1934, the 37 year old has spent most of the 1940's in the bullpen or on the DL. In the other game Washington scored twice in the bottom of the 8th to beat Boston 4-3. Shortstop Cecil Travis had 3 hits for the Sens while Ted Williams had a pair of hits including a homer for the Red Sox. Joe Haynes allowed just 6 hits over 8 innings for the victory. Code:

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL INDIANS OUTLAST BROWNS IN 10 INNING SLUGFEST Plenty of offense in Cleveland yesterday as the Indians and the visiting St Louis Browns combined for 17 runs and 33 hits. When it was all said and done the Tribe came out on top thanks to a 10th inning rbi single off the bat of Jeff Heath to make the final score Cleveland 9 St Louis 8. Every Cleveland starter aside from pitcher Steve Gromek had at least one hit in the game. Heath with 3 hits along with Oscar Grimes, who hit a pair of homers led the Indians assault. Bob Dillinger and Wally Judnich each had 3 hits to lead St Louis. It was a tough day for the pitchers as starters Gromek and Sam Zoldak were shelled for a combined 12 earned runs and 24 hits. Both were pulled in the 6th inning. In other American League action Boston exploded for 6 runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat Washington 8-2. Ted Williams had 3 hits in the game for the Red Sox including a homerun. Hal White pitched a complete game 7-hitter to pace Detroit past the Yankees 5-1. Tommy Henrich and Dick Wakefield homered for the Tigers. In the other game Dick Errickson went the distance on the hill for Chicago as the White Sox hammered Philadelphia 10-2. In the National League Cincinnati scored 4 runs in the final 3 innings to rally past Pittsburgh 6-3. Joe Dimaggio had a pair of hits including his first homerun of the season for the Reds. Bobby Estalella's bases-loaded triple in the top of the 6th inning accounted for all of the Phillies offense as Philadelphia trimmed New York 3-2. Giants starter Russ Bauers allowed just 3 hits in the game but walked 10 including 3 Phillies in the 6th inning before Estalella's big blow. Rookie catcher Yogi Berra had his second straight two hit game for the Giants. Ken Raffensberger had a great debut with the Boston Braves. Acquired from the Cubs at the beginning of the week, the 29 year old pitched 7 and 2/3 innings of shutout ball before giving way to the Braves bullpen in a 2-0 Boston victory over Brooklyn. Top draft pick Earl Torgeson got his first major league hit, a solo home run to account for one of the Boston runs. The other highly touted newcomer in this series, Jackie Robinson of the Dodgers, went 1-for-4 in the game. In the final National League game yesterday Bill Nicholson had 4 rbi's and Harlond Clift hit a 3-run homer as the Cubs decked the Cards 9-3. Code:

The second round pick of the Cincinnati Reds will get his first chance to do just that tomorrow in Pittsburgh but it is hard to imagine a more difficult challenge to being your major league career. Not only will Houtteman face the National League Champion Pittsburgh Pirates but he will also square off against one of the greatest pitchers in the game, 4 time Cy Young winner Cliff Melton. "We thought about holding the kid back a day for his debut," said Reds manager Johnny Neun. "But in the end we decided there is no sense. He will have to face the Pirates someday and every pitcher in this league is good." Houtteman himself says he is eager for the challenge and is glad he is starting in Pittsburgh rather than the home opener against Brooklyn on Friday. "Personally, I feel there would be more pressure on me pitching at home. I am really looking forward to this." He will become the youngest pitcher to ever start a game for the Reds. Jean Dubec was one month younger than Houtteman when he pitched 7 innings of relief for the Reds in 1908. STANLEY CUP FINALS RED WINGS LOOK TO HOIST CUP TONIGHT The Detroit Red Wings can clinch their fourth Stanley Cup title in franchise history with a win in Toronto this evening. The Wings, who previously won the cherished chalice in 1936, 1937 and 1943, lead the best of seven final 3 games to two. Goldberg floored Liverpool native Gus Foran with a sharp combination in the 14th round. Goldberg is now 2-0 in post world war II fights. The 28 year old will likely face the European champ, Luis Romero, in the fall unless Romero wins his World Bantamweight Title fight with Canadian Fernando Gagnon next month. Excitement is mounting for Sugar Ray Robinson's World Welterweight Title defense this Friday in Philadelphia. The 26 year old Robinson is 11-1 and will be making his first title defense since winning the post war belt in September with an 11th round KO of Marty Servo. His opponent will be Ohio native Tommy Bell, who is 27-2 but lost his only major challenge in a bout with Johnny Bratton.

Wow dude, I spent the past 7+ hours reading this entire thread, and I am absolutely amazed with this. I can't get enough and probably will re-read it just because I am at the end and want more! I am particularly enthralled by the boxing reports. I have a few questions. 1. How did you come up with the post WWII tournaments, actual historical matches, or did you come up with some format on your own? How do you come up with all the rankings of the fighters, through the game, or your own method? Are all the matches and title fights drawn up within the game, actual historical replays, or matches that you come up with? As long as you keep writing this...I will surely keep reading and give feedback, opinions and other comentary throughout your entire virtual sports world. For my background, I am from New Hampshire, so I am of course a follower of all New England teams, so I will take special interest in them, and all the boxers from there also. Keep up the good work man, this is great stuff.

Thanks Webbie75
To answer your questions: I am using TBCB and while it does an excellent job simulating fights you do need to come up with your own historical format. So what I did was use the auto scheduler within the game to schedule 1000 bouts for each weight class - with anywhere from 50 -100 fighters per class that gave everyone from 8-30 fights. The game itself will then rank the fighters for me so I had an elimination tournament with the top 4 in each weight class to get my postwar champions. I wanted a background story to explain the reason why everyone would have a similiar number of fights so what I decided was in my universe boxing ceased to exist during world war II and all titles were forfeited. This gave me the reason to have a postwar tournament and declare champions. From that point I made my own schedule which has all of the top 10 fighters fighting approx. twice a year and all non-top 10 guys fighting every 3 months. I manually determine who fights who among the top 10 using my own schedule format and then select certain bouts for some fighters outside the top 10 (like European or British Title fights for example). All other non-top 10 fighters are given an opponent at random as decided on by the game. I may have made this sound much more complicated than it is as I use a simple excel spreadsheet to track top 10 matchups. I hope that explains things to you. Thanks for reading and I look forward to more feedback and commentary. I may have to start focusing in much more detail on the New England area as you are not the first to say he is following those teams. Vris and at least one other have mentioned it.

I agree Vris, it is good to see baseball back but I (like a typical Kentuckian) am looking foward to the Triple Crown. Do any horses have a chance to win all three this year?
