Detroit went 16-12 in June, which was enough to move into first place. Boston slumped at 10-17 and Chicago went just 14-13. New York went 16-11 to pull one game above .500, while Cleveland also went 16-11 to even their record at 38-38. No team has stood out yet this season in the AL, although the Tigers have been hot lately, winning 13 of their last 14 games.

Brooklyn went 17-9 in June to pull within a half game of the first place Cubs. Chicago went 16-11 on the month and Boston's 13-14 record helped the Cubs move into the lead. The two-time defending NL champion Pirates are floundering two games below .500 and sit 8 games behind Chicago.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Patrick Seifried, 1B, Cleveland Broncos - He hit .354 with 19 RBI and 20 runs scored.

NL - "Ray of Light" Brown, CF, Pittsburgh Pirates - He hit .387 with 15 RBI, 15 runs scored and 3 home runs.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - "Shepard" McBean, Washington Senators - He was 5-1 with a 1.17 ERA and 1 shutout.

NL - Randall Tyler, Cincinnati Reds - He was 6-0 with a 2.17 ERA and 1 shutout.

No team has pulled away in the AL. As a matter of fact, no team has played all that well. The White Sox currently have a 1 game lead over Detroit after a 15-11 month. The Tigers were just 13-12 on the month. Washington was 15-10 this month and with the struggles of so many other teams, that allowed them to move up to a tie with Cleveland for third in the league.

The Chicago Cubs went 17-10 this month and pulled out to a 7-game lead over Boston and Brooklyn after beginning the month just a half game ahead of the Dodgers.

There were a few interesting trades this month. Perhaps the biggest saw Cleveland acquire a big game strating pitcher Clifton Bradin from the Phillies for fellow starter "Greasy" Holloway" and a minor league first baseman. Bradin is a big acquisition for the Broncos. He is just 25-years-old and potentially a future star. He is 9-13 with a respectable 3.12 ERA this season.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Genaro Nunez, 2B, Boston Red Sox - He hit .398 with 15 RBI, 23 runs scored and 14 steals.

NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .375 with 14 RBI and 14 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 5-1 with a 0.67 ERA and 2 shutouts.

NL - Reggie "The Duke" McQuirter, Cincinnati Reds - He was 6-1 with a 2.20 ERA and 2 shutouts.

American League Standings

Chicago (A) 55 46 .545 -
Detroit 55 48 .534 1.0
Cleveland 52 50 .510 3.5
Washington 52 50 .510 3.5
Boston (A) 50 51 .495 5.0
New York (A) 50 52 .490 5.5
Philadelphia (A) 47 54 .465 8.0
St. Louis (A) 46 56 .451 9.5

National League Standings

Chicago (N) 62 41 .602 -
Boston (N) 54 47 .535 7.0
Brooklyn 54 47 .535 7.0
Cincinnati 54 48 .529 7.5
Pittsburgh 50 50 .500 10.5
St. Louis (N) 50 51 .495 11.0
Philadelphia (N) 48 52 .480 12.5
New York (N) 33 69 .324 28.5

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit just .218 with 7 RBI and 8 runs scored. He did achieve a milestone this month, getting his 2000th hit on July 3rd against Philadelphia.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .297 with 13 RBI, 16 runs scored and 3 home runs.

Dummy Netsky, SP, New York (N) - Dummy was 0-4 with a 6.27 ERA in 6 starts. On July 30th, he was traded to Washington for third baseman Willie King and minor league relief pitcher Matt Stacy. He was inserted into the Senator's rotation as the #3 starter.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .434 with 14 RBI, 9 runs scored and 2 home runs. he has hit 2 home runs in each month this season.

Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .380 with 7 RBI and 8 runs scored. He leads the NL with a .396 average.

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert was 3-3 with a 4.56 ERA through 6 starts.

John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .286 with 12 RBI, 12 runs scored and 2 home runs.

Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .430 with 12 RBI and 15 runs scored. He leads the AL with a .373 average.

Genaro Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito was named BOTM (see above).

Ned Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Thanks to an injury, Ned was promoted to the active roster, but as a spot starter. It is doubtful that he will see any action, at least as a starter.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Miller hit .227 (5 for 22) with 5 runs scored.

Thomas Strasser, LF, Cleveland Broncos - Thomas is still playing in AA.

It is almost a foregone conclusion now that neither league's defending champion will return to the World Series this season. The Yankees have been mediocre at best and are currently 9 games back at 63-67. Their pitching staff is still good, but not as dominant as years past, but their offense has had a lot of trouble this season. In the NL, the Pirates are suffering through a miserable 58-71 season and find themselves 21.5 games back. Their pitching staff has finally struggled after so many seasons of what some journalists called "overachieving." Even their once-vaunted offense has been average.

The Cubs have maintained a strong lead in the National League. They lead the Braves by 7.5 games. They were 18-9 in August, while the Braves kept pace at 18-10.

The White Sox became the first AL team this season to hold first place in consecutive months. The Tigers and Broncos both tied for the lead at one time or another this month, but the Sox never fell out of first. They had a strong 17-12 month, but no other team was able to put together anything better over the full 31-day period. With just four weeks left in the season, the Pale Hose will have to earn the pennant. They play 5 more games against second place Detroit, 7 against always tough New York, three against the Red Sox and a whopping 9 against third place Washington.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Lou Langley, 3B, St. Louis Browns - He hit .381 with 23 RBI, 14 runs scored and 2 home runs.

NL - Woody Woodson, 2B, St. Louis Cardinals - He hit .442 with 11 RBI and 19 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Andrew Murphy, Chicago White Sox - He was 5-2 with a 1.01 ERA and 2 shutouts.

NL - Kennith Coupe, Boston Braves - He was 6-1 with a 1.14 ERA and 3 shutouts.

American League Standings

Chicago (A) 72 58 .554 -
Detroit 71 60 .542 1.5
Washington 69 61 .531 3.0
Cleveland 68 63 .519 4.5
New York (A) 63 67 .485 9.0
Boston (A) 62 69 .473 10.5
St. Louis (A) 61 70 .466 11.5
Philadelphia (A) 56 74 .431 16.0

National League Standings

Chicago (N) 80 50 .615 -
Boston (N) 72 57 .558 7.5
Brooklyn 67 63 .515 13.0
Cincinnati 66 64 .508 14.0
Philadelphia (N) 64 66 .492 16.0
St. Louis (N) 64 66 .492 16.0
Pittsburgh 58 71 .450 21.5
New York (N) 48 82 .369 32.0

Ancestors:

Whiskey Allen, C, Cleveland - Whiskey hit .424 with 12 RBI and 21 runs scored.

Heinrich Kahle, 1B, Cincinnati - Kahle hit .296 with 18 RBI, 8 runs scored and 2 home runs. He is tied for 2nd in the NL with 9 home runs.

Dummy Netsky, SP, Washington - Dummy did well in his AL debut. He went 3-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 7 starts. Maybe he just needed a change of scenery. The other big boost for his career is the fact that his home park with the Giants - The Polo Grounds - was a hitter's haven, while Washington's Griffith Stadium is much more beneficial to pitchers. In modern terms, it's almost the equivalent of moving from Coors to Comerica or Safeco. Further proving that point is the fact that his home ERA is 5.19 while he sports a 4.16 ERA on the road.

Campbell Ditty, CF, New York (N) - Ditty hit .308 with 10 RBI and 7 runs scored. He has developed into one of the top centerfielders in the game, and at age 24 he is 3rd in the NL with a .347 average.

Harry Cohan, C, Boston (N) - Harry hit .329 with 7 RBI and 15 runs scored. He dropped to second in the NL with a .383 average, thanks mostly to the incredible month had by St. Louis' Woody Woodson (see BOTM above).

Fists Ubert, SP, St. Louis (N) - Ubert was 3-2 with a 3.16 ERA through 7 starts. His 3.32 ERA this season is currently 3rd best on the team.

John Falise, RF, Philadelphia (N) - Pops hit .273 with 15 RBI and 12 runs scored.

Jean-Francois Arsenault, SS, Chicago (A) - Flaky hit .308 with 16 RBI and 18 runs scored. He is second in the AL with a .357 average. His teammate and double play combo partner, second baseman Jed Burke, leads the AL at a .363 clip.

Genaro Nunez, 2B, Boston (A) - Tito hit .299 with 7 RBI and 22 runs scored.

Ned Fargo, SP, St. Louis (A) - Once the Browns' ace Raymond Gindler returned from injury, the team decided to keep Fargo on the active roster, which shows that he may have an immediate future with the team. He is still in the bullpen, but the major league experience should help. He got into three games this month, and to say they have been disappointing outings would be an understatement. After a total of 1 1/3 innings, Ned has allowed 10 earned runs off 9 hits and 3 walks while striking out just one batter. That gives him a bloated 67.52 ERA on the season.

Will Miller, LF, Washington - Miller hit .280 (7 for 25) with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Thomas Strasser, LF, Cleveland Broncos - Thomas spent August in the minors, but he was called back up to the active roster on September 1st to take part in the pennant stretch.

ALL WEB PAGES ARE UPDATED... INCLUDING PLAYER PAGES AND WORLD SERIES BOX SCORES

September 29, 1913

The Cubs captured their first NL pennant since 1905 when they beat the New York Highlanders in baseball's second World Series. The Cubs have never had a losing season in the franchise's 13-year history, but this is just their 2nd pennant to show for it. In the AL, Washington came out on top by going 10-3 against New York, Philadelphia and St. Louis and then winning 7-of-12 from the White Sox and Broncos. This is the first AL pennant in the Senators' history. It is even more impressive because the team finished in 7th Place last season. Also, two ancestors will play for Washington in the World Series - Dummy Netsky and Will Miller.

Batters of the Month:

AL - Owyn Cuffie, CF, Boston Red Sox - He hit .488 with 14 RBI and 16 runs scored.

NL - Henry Tromp, C, Brooklyn Dodgers - He hit .484 with 11 RBI and 13 runs scored.

Pitchers of the Month:

AL - Clifton Bradin, Cleveland Broncos - He was 5-1 with a 0.81 ERA and 3 shutouts.

NL - Cecil Tan, Cincinnati Reds - He was 4-1 with a 0.96 ERA and 2 shutouts.

American League Standings

Washington 85 69 .552 -
Cleveland 84 70 .545 1.0
Chicago (A) 82 72 .532 3.0
Detroit 81 73 .526 4.0
New York (A) 76 78 .494 9.0
Boston (A) 75 79 .487 10.0
St. Louis (A) 69 85 .448 16.0
Philadelphia (A) 64 90 .416 21.0

National League Standings

Chicago (N) 93 61 .604 -
Cincinnati 83 71 .539 10.0
Boston (N) 82 72 .532 11.0
Brooklyn 79 75 .513 14.0
St. Louis (N) 77 77 .500 16.0

Pittsburgh 69 85 .448 24.0
New York (N) 60 94 .390 33.0

World Series

The key matchup here will be the Cubs' pitching versus the Senators' offense. Chicago has the second best team ERA in baseball. They also allow very few walks, and opponents hit just .247 against them this season. Washington, on the other hand, has one of the better offenses in the game. They draw a lot of walks and hit .266 as a team, which was 4th best in the game. The trouble for the Senators will be their pitching, whose 3.52 team ERA ranked 12th in the big leagues. The Cubs, though, have only an average offense, although they have a lot of power and steal quite a few bases.

My Prediction: The Cubs offense should do well against Washington's pitching, while the Senators' offense may struggle against Chicago. I expect Chicago to win in 5 games.

Chicago 5 - Washington 7: The Cubs took a 5-2 lead into the 8th inning, but the Senators hammered 5 runs in that inning to take the first game of the series.

Chicago 5 - Washington 8: Washington scored 4 runs in the 5th inning to take a 6-5 lead. They then added two more runs in the 8th to seal the victory.

Washington 2 - Chicago 9: The Cubs hammered Washington starter Dummy Netsky for 8 runs (7 earned) over 6 innings.

Washington 5 - Chicago 2: The Senators scored 5 runs off 11 hits. In two games, they have plastered Chicago's #1 starter Hugh Tiedt for 12 runs and 26 hits in 17 innings.

Washington 4 - Chicago 5: This game went into extra innings tied 3-3. Washington scored a run in the top of the 10th, but Chicago came back in the bottom of that inning. With one out, Washington third baseman Calvin Page made a throwing error which allowed a runner to reach first base. Centerfielder Ryan Adcock drew a walk, and first baseman Boris "The Bear" Lavender hit an RBI single. Adcock and Lavender then advanced on the throw home. With the score now tied, catcher Steven Alstrom was walked intentionally. Rightfielder Jessie Goad then hit a game-winning single to keep the Cubs alive in the series.

Chicago 2 - Washington 0: This game turned into a pitchers duel with no runs scoring until a 2-run single with one out by Cubs' rightfielder Jessie Goad, the hero from Game 5. Despite a strong performance, Dummy Netsky took the loss for Washington and the Senators' 3-1 lead in the series disappeared.

Chicago 1 - Washington 5: Once again, the Senators tagged Chicago's Hugh Tiedt for a loss. Washington's "Shepard" McBean allowed just one run on two hits. This was the first World Series in history to go the complete 7 games.

Washington had a few batters who could have qualified for this award, but in a World Series that was dominated by offense, "Shepard" McBean stood out. He was 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA for the Senators. He became the first pitcher to ever win 3 games in a World Series, and he is a major reason why Washington is celebrating their first world championship.

The Federal League began play this season, hoping to create a third major league. In doing so, several players were raided from the National and American Leagues. Every player who jumped to the Federal League was black listed from the NL and AL. Here is a list of the more well-known players who left for the Federal League:

Jean-Pierre Stepro, 1B, Boston Red Sox
Patrick Seifried, 1B, Cleveland Broncos (3-time POTY)
Harry Harvey, LF, St. Louis Cardinals
Floyd Kubitzki, SS, Washington Senators
Jesse Whitfield, SP, New York Yankees

War in Europe broke out this year and the possibility that the US will become involved has grown. If they join the frey, baseball players, like all men of fighting age, would be subject to the draft.

In lighter news, the Brooklyn team renamed themselves the Robins. However, despite the name change, Brooklyn does not look like they will be too competitive this season. The top team may be the Braves, but the defending NL champion Cubs look to repeat. Several other teams should be highly competitive this season, namely the Reds, Giants, Phillies and Pirates.

In the AL, two teams took a big hit from players defecting to the new Federal League. Cleveland lost 3-time BOTY first baseman Patrick Seifried. He was a key leader for the team's offense and their main source of power. At age 31, he leaves the AL with 34 home runs, 624 RBI, a .325 career average and 3 gold gloves. The defending World Champion Senators were also dealt a big loss when shortstop Floyd Kubitzki joined the Federal League. Last season, he hit .319 with 9 home runs and 79 RBI.

Those two losses to the top two teams from last season make the American League incredibly even from top to bottom. Washington is still favored to repeat, but every other team (except possibly Detroit) should be in the mix, and any team could win the pennant.

Key Retirees:

Bryan Henderson, 1B, Boston Braves 1901-1913: Henderson became the first player in history to collect his 2000th hit last season. He finished his career with 2095 (1st All Time). He also had a .293 average, 280 Doubles (8th All Time), 774 RBI (5th All Time), 742 runs scored (17th All Time) and 468 walks. He won the World Series with Boston in 1910 and he won 3 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1906-1908.

Greg Heiderich, SP, Philadelphia Athletics 1901-1912: Heiderich was a three-time 20-game winner with the A's. He finished his career with a 207-180 record. His 207 wins is 8th most All Time. He also had a 2.71 ERA (10th All Time), 1247 strikeouts (19th All Time), 375 complete games (4th All Time) and 39 shutouts (10th All Time).

Carl Garvan, SP Cincinnati Reds 1901-1911, New York Giants 1911-1913: Carl was a 4-time 20-game winner. He won two POTY Awards in 1902 and 1907. He finished his career with a 197-168 record (12th most wins All Time), 2.60 ERA (9th All Time), 1737 strikeouts (5th All Time), 323 complete games (13th All Time) and 40 shutouts (9th All Time).

"Dark Horse" Allen, CF, Philadelphia Phillies 1901-1913: Allen was perhaps the first superstar of baseball. He was the offensive leader for the great Phillies teams of the early 1900's. He was a 3-time BOTY, winning in 1901, 1904 and 1906. He finished with a .325 average (6th best All Time), 1795 hits (9th All Time), 67 home runs (5th All Time), 709 RBI (15th All Time), 907 runs scored (4th All Time) and 871 walks (1st All Time). The Phillies enjoyed only one World Series championship, because they were winning pennants before the Series began, but they (led by Allen) captured three consecutive pennants from 1901-03. Their only World Series victory came in 1903, the first Series ever.

Ancestors Added

Chuck "Pudge" Harris, C, St. Louis (N) Cardinals

Chuck is almost the ideal catcher. He has a solid bat, but has a great eye at the plate. He draws a lot of walks and rarely strikes out. He is also a defensive wiz, and upon his arrival in the big leagues, he should become one of the best defensive catchers in the game. He will begin the season in AAA, but he has a great chance of appearing in the majors this season.

Ahrend "Professor" Nagel, SP, Philadelphia Athletics

Even at age 17 (he turns 18 in December), Nagel has the potential to become one of the best pitchers in the league. He will begin the season in AAA, but it is only a matter of time before the A's promote him. He does not get a lot of strikeouts with his top pitches, but hitters rarely get hits off of him. The A's are dying for the opportunity to bring him up to the majors.
