MLB news: July 18 -- All-Star game and Prospects game
For some reason the game didn't create reports for the Prospects Game and All-Star game.
I attempted to play the All-Star game and when I simmed to that day, it was no longer an option. |

Cards news: July 19 -- OF Matt Cooke acquired from LAA for LHP Amarante and RHP Reich
The St. Louis Cardinals have acquired outfielder Matt Cooke from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for closer Juan Amarante, right-hander starting pitcher Ryan Reich and minor-league infielder Richardo Goiocochea.
The deal may seem to be a little lopsided, but Amarante is due to be a free agent at season's end -- and negotiations on an extention have been a bit on the heavy side -- while Reich is due to see his yearly deal mostly double in the off-season and the Cardinals have a number of young pitchers seemingly ready to pitch in the majors. Cooke, 25, has hit .298 with 13 home runs and 50 RBIs this season for the Angels in 93 games/92 starts. A seventh-round pick in the 2028 draft, he broke into the majors in 2033 and in 283 games/258 starts, has hit .276 with 29 home runs and 136 RBIs. The Cardinals acquired Amarante from the Padres mid-season in 2033 and for the most part, he has been among the best relievers in the game. In 2035, he has appeared in 25 games going 3-3 with 11 saves and a 1.57 ERA. As a Cardinal, he has made 285 appearances going 31-26 with 129 saves and a 2.23 ERA. However, with free agency looming contract negotiations saw him requesting a multi-year deal worth more than $20 million per season which the team sees as too much to swallow. Acquired in an in-season trade with Tampa Bay in 2033, Reich has seemed to get better with every year although his won-loss record does not really show it. This season, in 19 starts the 31-year-old has gone 4-8 with a 3.09 ERA. In all, he has pitched in 157 games for St. Louis, all but one a start, and gone 42-54 with a 3.75 ERA. The hiccup is, right now, Reich is making $5.9M per season, but that leaps to $13M in 2036 and 2037. With St. Louis having a deep group of young starters in the minors, and the team seemingly out of contention, the team decided it was time to move Reich. The 17-year-old Goicochea is a complete unknown after being signed out of the Dominican. |
