  • Star P prospect Jose Hernandez, acquired from the SJ Hawks in March, was recalled. The IBL's #31 ranked prospect will get ample time to prove himself over the next 8-12 weeks.

  • BACKROOM CHATTER
  • Our audience is growing, our owner is spending more and we have a roster full of very good talent. I am not getting any big discounts with the major signings it doesn't seem like but it's comforting in some capacity.
  • It's also unsettling. With the Whittaker signing it means the core talent of this team is together through at least 2015. The players remaining to try and sign are Matt Behrens (7.5m AE) Dave Nolasco (5m AE) Greg Cowan (4.2m AE) Jesse Kucher (1.7m AE) Jeff Anderson (3.4m AE) Sam Reyes (3.1m AE) and Joe Tighe (4.6m AE). If I sign none of them, and those arbitration estimates hit exactly, we are staring at an 85.6m dollar payroll with needs next year, 94.2 for 2015.
  • The Rhoads injury sucks but it's also another sign of just how deep we have managed to make this 40 man roster. Hernandez lost his 1st start but went 7, and is slated for big things.
  • There is some idle chatter amongst baseball ops of moving Reardon to the 60 day DL to open a spot for McGlasson to get at-bats.

  • PATRIOT LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Pat Sullivan (DAL) 11-24 2 HR 8 RBI
  • COLONIAL LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Ricky Gutierrez (CHA) 9-24 5 HR 13 RBI

  • 2013 ABL DRAFT
  • A look back at the drafts we've overseen since taking over baseball operations in 2010.
  • 2010 DRAFT #/# Round/Overall pick (GRADE)
  • 1/1- Sam Reyes (A) A resounding success considering he is just 22 years old and already played in 200 ABL games. A career .269/.379/.438 hitter who has been outstanding and versatile on defense. An on base machine who will sit atop this lineup for years to come.
  • 1/26- Nate Davis (B) Huge power bat that's coming into his own. A switch hitter who made the leap from A ball last year to AAA this year where he is currently hitting .297/.335/.636 15 2B 18 HR and 46 RBI. Just 20 years old. Ranked #77 on the prospect list. One of five picks made in the end of the 1st and 2nd rounds.
  • 2/37- Kyle Yadon (B+) Just 18 years old at the draft he showed massive power potential but was raw as could be. Took it very slowly with advancement and after his 1st decent season last year he's breaking out at class A SLC. His record setting home run binge the past two weeks has moved his numbers to .253/.392/.567 and he's on pace to hit 43 HR's and drive in 137 as well as draw 114 walks. Potential heir apparent to Aaron Chisholm?
  • 2/50- Jeff Baker (B) Closing in AAA this year and struggling a little bit with a 5.56 ERA and 28 H in 22.2 IP but has punched out 36 and walked just 9. Just 22 and a soon to be ABL reliever. He is the top candidate to take over the closers role in a few years.
  • 2/53- Joe LaPorte (C-) In the middle of an 8 week DL stint due to a broken finger. At SLC last year hit .210/.343/.438 with 23 HR 56 RBI in 94 games. Feels like he's a AAAA player ceiling wise.
  • 2/54- Chris Lawson (B-) 23 and currently 5-2 3.87 at AA Modesto after going 11-5 3.83 last year. Still feels like a legitimate 4 or 5 in the big leagues with maybe a slightly higher ceiling if everything breaks right.
  • 2/62- Dave Bates (B) Has every bit the power we thought he did. Hit 24 HR between Hartford and SLC in 2010, 32 HR's in 2011 at Modesto and is hitting . .256/.369/.483 with 11 HR and 36 RBI 28 BB 27 K in 47 games at AAA Warren. Problem is he's at the most stacked position in the game, 1B. He's an outstanding defensive 1B, runs extremely well too. On pace to hit 27 and drive in 88.
  • 3/75- Travis Harrison (B-) Has done nothing but drive the ball and get on base. .302-10-36 in 35 games his rookie season. 27 HR and 62 RBI in 102 games at SLC, 31 HR between SLC and Modesto the following year and is hitting .250/.361/.465 with 10 2B 9 HR 32 RBI in 48 games at AAA Warren. A LHH corner outfielder who will play in the ABL someday soon.

  • 2011 DRAFT
  • 1/2- Steve Roblique (C+) In 11 starts at SLC this year he's 7-0 3.08. His arsenal is elite and that gives us hope but right now our scouts are saying #4 guy at best. Just 20 years old and lots of time to improve.
  • 2/36- Mike Baker (B+) 19 years old and hitting .384/.477/.530 at SLC. 14/33 K/BB ratio. Already above average defensively his bat has improved far beyond what we initially thought. He's destined to sit in the 2 hole in a big league lineup. On pace for a 47 2B 4 HR 105 RBI season with 31 K and 74 BB
  • 2/39- John Russell (D-) If you followed along in this draft you'll remember I had a huge debate about this pick. Scouts wanted Chris Brothers, a catcher out of Arcadia HS. Brothers is 20, and still at Rookie League Abbotsford with the Pittsburgh organization. Hasn't hit much. However Russell went 1-60 in his 1st season, that's a .017 batting average. Last year he hit .121/.367/.189 ub 49 games and 188 plate appearances. He's still 19 and will open at Rookie League Ft Wayne again this year.
  • 2/59- John Thomas (A) Just 20 and in AAA he's hitting .345/.403/.575. His defense has to pick up but he's going to win a batting title someday. 11 HR 39 RBI in 57 games between AA and AAA this year. He is a 3 hole candidate right now.

  • 2012 DRAFT
  • 1/18- Jeff Hanna (B) 21 year old switch hitting RF who is hitting .280/.418/.737 at SLC. Middle of the order bat who just needs experience.

The top 10 prospects heading into the draft. This year we pick 30th. Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Denver, Ft Worth and Mexico have the top 5 picks (Denver also picks 8th). Brooklyn also has 2 picks (7 and 16).

3-Denver 3B Matt Maxey (#2) Dodge City JC
4-Ft Worth SS Ben Gallo (#4) Marist HS
5-Mexico 3B Andy Campbell (#5) McLennan CC
6-Memphis RHP Sergio Olivera (#6) Central Arizona JC

58-Kyle Brill CF (20) North Carolina Switch hitting CF with great tools and work ethic.

  • ABL HAPPENINGS:
  • 6/17: Paul Bradburn (DAL) struck out 11 en route to a 6 hit 2-0 win over San Diego.
  • 6/17: Lexington agreed to terms on a 2-year 13.8m dollar extension with 25-year-old closer Charles Smith. A 2x Rivera and Rolaids award winner, as well as a 3-time world champion Smith is 34-30 219, Saves 2.68 in 343 games. In 370 IP he's allowed just 202 hits with a staggering 783 K's for a WHIP of 0.96 and a stunning 19.4 K/9.
  • 6/18: Brad Ullrich (PHI) allowed just 4 hits in going the distance in a 5-0 win over San Jose
  • 6/19: Our 2011 1st round pick (2nd overall) SP Steve Roubique was getting by in SLC (A) going 7-0 with a 4.04, his peripherals were good, not great. He was promoted to AA Modesto and in his 1st 2 starts has gone 1-0 2.20 in 16.1 IP 7 H 9 K 2 BB. He is now teamed up with 2009 1st overall pick Tashfin Sassi.6/20: Hartford and Ft Wayne have both started 0-3.
  • 6/22: Mike Crawford (HOU) scattered 7 hits across 9 innings, striking out 10 and walking 1 in a 4-0 Roughrider win over Denver.

  • RUSTLER NEWS:
  • 6/17: AUSTIN DEALS AASEN TO HOUSTON
  • It is being reported in Houston that the Roughriders and the Austin Rustlers have agreed on a trade that would send 25 year old RHP Dave Miller and a 19 year old IF prospect to the Rustlers for 31 year old IF Mike Aasen and 27 year old OF Jerry Breaux, as well as Austins 2014 6th round draft choice. Aasen is hitting .351 in 2013 with 15 RBI and 1 HR.

  • BACKROOM CHATTER
  • Multiple reasons behind this move. Joe Tighe and Chris Haske both came off the DL and Aasen was out of options. Pat Hobart, who had pitched very well, was sent back to Warren to clear Haske's spot and Aasen and Breaux were sent to Houston clearing the way for Joe Tighe to return. The Roughriders selected Miller 12th overall in 2008 out of Penn and his landing spot is in a rotation somewhere, for now that's here. He's just 25 and has been working out of Houston's bullpen since 2011. Bruins is a very good and young (19) IF/OF utility type player who will head to Hartford.
  • Miller will move into the rotation and Jose Hernandez (0-4 5.85) will be optioned back to Warren to get his innings in. He's a top of the rotation option someday soon.

  • PATRIOT LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Paul Bradburn (DAL) 2-0 0.56 ERA 16 IP 16 K
  • COLONIAL LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Danny Vargas (FW) 12-21 HR 2 RBI
  • GIVING IT BACK IN JUNE
  • Coming into the month we were 36-21 and have since gone 6-14 with a horrid losing streak in there. The “marathon not a sprint” quote is cliché, but it's the truest ever spoken. Our pitching and defense rank in the top 5 of every single category but HR allowed and WAR. Our offense ranks top 5 in ever category but Runs (6th) HR (10th) BB (6th) and “base running” (9th). There are no glaring holes and sometimes, as much as fans hate to hear it, you just 'play bad'. It takes a pitcher usually, to step up (as Matt Behrens did to end that losing streak) or a position player to get hot and carry a team for a few days. We haven't had the latter. I will say that the bullpen has been an achilles heel far more than I expected. We need a spark plug. Ft Worth 'had” turned it around and started winning but have fallen on hard times.

NEXT WEEK: 4 @ San Antonio 3 @ Providence

ABL HAPPENINGS:
6/24: San Diego lost OF Andy O'Brien for the remainder of the year after he broke his kneecap yesterday. The 25 year old was hitting .277-20-47 with 55 runs and the Missions are just 5.5 games back. I have reached out to their GM given their “win now” approach and my insane surplus of talented outfielders
6/27: Mike Crawford (HOU) tossed his 2nd consecutive shutout in a 1-0 win over Lexington
6/28:Charlotte took a 4-1 lead into the 8th inning and then a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the 9th. Providence scored 5 times in the bottom of the 9th and the game stayed tied until Black Sox SS Justin Self slammed a walk off 3R HR in the bottom of the 17th

RUSTLER NEWS:
6/25: AUSTIN TRADES MCGLASSON
2011 Patriot League Rookie of the year Andrew McGlasson is on the move again. The 26-year-old was sent, along with OF prospect Nate Davis and veteran C Benny Keegan to the San Diego Missions or SP Prospect Sung-hyun Lee. McGlasson will take over for Andy O'Brien who was injured yesterday and will miss the remainder of the season with a broken kneecap. Davis is a top hitting prospect in back of a long line of talent in the Austin Organization. Keegan gives the Missions that 3rd catcher with veteran status come September. Lee is the leagues 39th ranked prospect and will report to AAA Warren. San Diego signed him in 2006 out of South Korea. Many have predicted the big righty (6'8” 200lb) to be at the front of an ABL rotation sometime in the next 1-2 years at most.

BACKROOM CHATTER
Jeff Reardon's return from the DL and the surplus of OF'ers both on the 40 man and coming up has led to a lack of at-bats for some priority playerss. Nate Davis is a huge power bat but the rest of the package remains to be seen. We think he will definitely end up in the middle of someone's lineup in the next 2-3 seasons. We jumped on the Missions immediate need to replace Andy O'Brien with McGlasson. I don't know how to look at the deal we made for him other than as a failure. It just never seemed to play out like I wanted with the playing time. Lee is a legitimate top of the rotation arm and close. I hope he ends up a #1 arm in our #4 rotation spot.

6/26: Ft Wayne won their 1st game of the year after opening the season 0-8
6/30: Ft Wayne is now 1-12. Not getting pounded but finding ways to lose every night.

PATRIOT LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mike Randazzo (BAL) 14-25 HR 7 RBI
COLONIAL LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jorge Hernandez (CHA) 16-28 2 HR 10 RBI

Finished the month 10-16. Felt like 10-160 honestly. The offensive cannot seem to click right now. We do lead the league in stolen bases and OBP and 2nd in Avg to The Empire (.276 to .275) but Lexington is absolutely in another league pitching. The lead every single pitching category and most are not close. In RA we are 2nd with 311, they have allowed 238 runs. All this without their best pitcher Masuda. They lead in FIP with 2.99 2nd place Providence is at 3.84. It feels like their entire staff is 1999 Pedro Martinez.

Laskey came in last night with a 3-1 lead and no one on and allowed a game-tying 2R HR before allowing a walk off HR in the 10th. Laskey's .341 BABIP is an indicator of some bad luck but his 1.3 HR/9 has been a huge factor in the 5 blown saves and 3-7 record. His 4.72 ERA is well past double his lifetime ERA and almost twice his 2.38 ERA last season. Laskey will move into a setup role along with Chris Haske and Vince Aspinwall.

  • PATRIOT LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: AJ Autery (OH) 16-32 2 HR 5 RBI
  • COLONIAL LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Francisco Pinela (MON) 12-27 2 HR 7 RBI

Austin Rustlers

It's good to have you back! Have missed you writing/posting about the Austin Rustlers. They are going through a down time right now, but they will bounce back.

Just curious, maybe this will help, maybe not. How is the chemistry for your team? Do you have a Captain and some leaders? Perhaps a mix of a few pranksters and sparkplugs and humble players along with the first ones to offset the negative personality players, losing streaks etc.? This was just a thought that I had as I read about this season.

Another question if you don't mind. How is the overall state of the league, more specifically your league and division. It seems that Ft Worth who if I remember correctly has been a perennial doormat since you started this dynasty. This year however they are doing better and seem to have your number.

Have a good night!
