Errant Ball KO's Marlowe:

The Matadors equipment manager announced today that he would order an inspection of all the team's training equipment after a pitching machine beaned Dick Marlowe. The reliever was briefly knocked unconscious after the machine lobbed an errant fastball directly at his head. Marlowe, who was clearly caught off-guard by the wild throw, attempted to duck out of the ball's way, but was hit squarely in the side of the head.

Fortunately for Marlowe, he was wearing a helmet at the time. Still, the sheer impact left him lying motionless on the ground for a few frightening moments. "It was scary," said teammate Jimmy Stewart. "I've never seen a pitching machine throw a pitch quite like that."

Marlowe was attended to by coaches and teammates and was later taken to a local hospital for observation. He was diagnosed with a mild concussion and may miss a game as a result. "I've gotta admit," Stewart added, " I'm gonna be a little nervous next time I have to face one of those things!"

Virginia Tech Hokies Are Champs:

It was a hard-fought battle for both teams to make it this far. But as the saying goes, "to the victors go the spoils." For the victorious Virginia Tech Hokies, that meant the NCAA College World Series trophy.

The Hokies took a 4-1 victory over the Montana State Bobcats at English Field, winning their 1st championship after taking the series 3-2.

"We've got grit," said Hokies left fielder Charley Jones, who was named MVP of the series. "We know how to win when we have to."

The new titleholders completed the regular season with a 4th-place finish in the National League ACC and a 96-67 record.

Virginia Tech Hokies Win Fall Classic and Get Invited to the White House:

Besides winning the big game and all of the accolades that go along with it, the Virginia Tech Hokies also got a phone call from the President of the United States.

The call from the nation's commander-in-chief was part of an annual tradition to invite the winning club to visit the White House. When describing the call he received from POTUS, Hokies manager Steve Purcell seemed a bit flustered.

"He told us that he wants to meet the boys that won the Series and asked if we would come to the White House," Purcell said. "I told him, 'Hell yes...er- yes sir, Mr. President.'"

The date of the visit has not been announced.
