MY LIFE IN 1950

It's May... I am now 10 years old and in the fourth grade at Jefferson Davis Elementary in New Orleans, Louisiana... beginning to follow baseball in the New Orleans Times-Picayune sports pages.

I must give credit where credit is due... thank goodness for comic books and the sports pages... I got a very good education reading them... they aided in my spelling, arithmetic and vocabulary... regular school gave me the basics... trash reading upgraded me to a higher level... not bragging, but I was always the best student in all of my classes until the 9th grade... at that time I ran into things like algebra, physics and chemistry... I think very poor study habits did me in at that time... I couldn't coast anymore... I needed to buckle down and apply myself... sadly, I didn't always do it in high school... and I suffered the consequences... and just dropped back to being a B student, instead of straight A's.

Baseball stats really help my arithmetic in school... figuring batting averages, ERAs and winning percentage greatly enhanced my education... basic arithmetic, multiplication, division and fractions were a breeze for me.

Comics books even got me into classical literature with the Classic Comics series... they would do the great literary works in comic book style... I would have never read the originals, but I got the basics in the Classic Comics... Treasure Island, Tom Sawyer, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Last of the Mohicans, Robinson Crusoe.

And... oh yeah... you know I read Superman, Batman, Captain Marvel and the creepy Tales from the Crypt... boy, I would really have something if I had collected and saved all of the comic books I bought.

Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda... but I didn't.

Here is the BASEBALL BAROMETER from Monday, May 22, 1950... it covers my beloved Southern Association, American League, National League as well as several other minor leagues like the Texas League (Double A), Evangeline League (Class C) and Southeastern League (Class D).

I learned to love the St. Louis Cardinals by listening to Harry Caray on KMOX in St. Louis at night... that's how Stan "The Man" Musial became my all-time favorite sports figure... and by reading everything I could in the New Orleans Times-Picayune... and in later years in The Sporting News.

TANGLED WEB IN NIRL 2ND DIVISION
Four clubs are tightly bunched in the North Island Recreational League Second Division... in Sunday action West Chester upended first place Dutton 5-4 in 10 innings... Jackson smashed Joliet 12-2 to move up into a first place tie with Dutton... both teams are 8-4 for the year... Kinston got by last place Theodore 4-1 and is deadlocked with West Chester for third place, one game out of first... the Firebirds and Comets are 7-5.
