I was out of town for a bit and missed a bunch of this but here is day 14. Going into the final day, M1 Daieisho is 12-2 with Ozeki Shodai at 11-3.
On day fifteen, Shodai faces Ozeki Asanoyama (10-4) and Daieisho faces M5 Okinoumi (7-7) so Daieisho has a fairly easy path to wrap this up but there could be a playoff. Terunofuji is keeping alive his hope to re-claim an Ozeki rank at 10-4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kh_JURH2tNI

A video of some of the rougher stuff from day 13 demonstrating the dangers in Sumo pretty well.

A wild scene from day ten - starts about at 2:40. This sport needs to step into the current century. No on-site doctors, a deep history of carrying on regardless of the circumstance - just shocking.

Final Day for the January Basho. My favorites Tochinoshin and Mitekiumi did not have a great Basho (especially Tochinoshin who may need to think about retirement this year. He may be too old to contemplate doing what Terunofuji did; drop all the way to the bottom while healing and make a come back all the way to the top again).

Some final thoughts as we exit the January tournament...
- None of the Ozeki are ready for a Yokozuna run. Shodai and Asanoyama appear to be the closest, while Takakeisho took a huge step backward before he dropped out. - Terunofuji is poised to regain Ozeki rank as long as he gets 9 or more wins in March. The next question will be this: Can his knees hold out for another 2 years to give him a fair chance at a Yokozuna run? - Daieisho's maiden yusho in the top division has him poised to jump back to Sekiwake. He's only 27, and is in the best form of his career. Can he potentially turn this into a consistent run in the sanyaku ranks and make an Ozeki run of his own before 2021 is out? - Is this the beginning of the end of Tochinoshin? He was recently as low as Maegashira 11 last year, and it's possible that he will be even lower when the next banzuke comes out, meaning that with another bad tournament with 10+ losses, he could be in some danger of relegation to Juryo. Will we see Tochinoshin retire before he gets relegated out of the top division? - Speaking of the end, it looks like the end of the line for Ikioi. Yesterday's fusensho loss to Juryo champion Tsurugisho was the first time Ikioi went kyujo. He will most likely fall out of the salaried ranks, and at 34 and as injured as he is, this has potential to be the end for the former Sekiwake, who should be getting a nice retirement payment. |

I would give decent odds of Terunofuji becoming a Yokozuna before any of the current Ozeki. He looked ready 3-4 years back before all the injuries.

The March Basho started yesterday with a limited live audience. Hakuho is back for the first time since the summer, Terunofuji continues his return from the dead (a particularly strong win on day two). My favorites, Mitekiumi and Tochinoshin, are heading in opposite directions.

Day three and Terunofuji looks really good in the early going. Hakuhoe out yet again. This time it's a knee and surgery. ugh

Day Five:
- Tochinoshin lifted and moved like the Tochinoshin of a few years ago - Terunofuji got himself in the same awkward position at the ropes as he did yesterday but couldn't pull a nifty move out of it today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ie1AUAHPdj0

Day 6:
Myougiryuu loses his first and things are wide open with no Yokozuna and poorly performing Ozeki. A huge lift by Terunofuji today! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLnPohrRVuY

Catching up; Days 7, 8 & 9
- Quite the winning technique from Enho down in Juryo on day 9. - Tochinoshin & Mitekiumi continue to bum me out - Takayasu starting to run away with this but I still think Terunofuji can still take the yusho https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Tuovp3VLNc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkUG-wgTiPI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdKUT-jBOjM

Day Eleven:
- Kakuryuu officially retired today. With Hakuho out until the summer with surgery (if he doesn't also retire) there are no Yokozuna for the foreseeable future. - Tochinoshin avoids makekoshi for today but the outlook is still grim - Great moves from Terunofuji today - needs a few more wins to climb all the way back to Ozeki and some help to take the Yusho (Takayasu lost today so the gap is only one with four days to go) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHxSv6XTfZI

Day 12:
- Tochinoshin continues to keep the makekoshi wolves at bay - Terunofuji needs just one more win to get his Ozeki rank back after more than three years - Three days left for Terunofuji or Asanoyama to close the one win gap with Takayasu https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dURSIpztL58

Day 13:
- Mitakeumi avoids makekoshi for another day - Takayasu goes down in a spectacular bout to fall all the way back to the pack - Asanoyamma falls off the pace but Terunofuji explodes for a win to stay even in the Yusho race. - Two days left, Terunofuji and Takayasu lead with 3 losses and four followers with four each. - Tochinoshin has fought hard and surprisingly can still make kachikoshi but he has to get through 9-4 Hidenoumi tomorrow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98gjz6b9wDc

Day 14:
- Tochinoshin is at 7-7 with kachi-koshi hopes still alive. He has looked stronger as the basho has gone on and better than he has in ages. - Mitekiumi still has a shot at a kachi-koshi on the final day as well - Takayasu survives a monoii even though he touched down first was ruled the aggressor - Terunofuji leads by one with three followers; one of whom will face him on the final day. So, Terunofuji loss tomorrow makes a four-way tie possible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1igfaw1ldo

Terunofuji re-promoted to Ozeki after his three-year battle with injuries and falling all the way to the lowest levels.
