The Expos offense has not improved at all in the past 25 games. The Expos still hold down last in most offensive categories in the National League. Montreal will definitely have to add some bats for the second half of the season. Pitching wise, the Expos did improve considerably, we are at least getting a chance to win when the offense shows up. As well our defense has improved in the last 25 games.

Montreal Starters AGE W-L ERA GS IP K WHIP K/9
Taft, Jamari 28 3-4 4.90 11 64 66 1.63 9.2
Hernanez, Eddie 23 6-3 2.64 10 61 44 0.98 6.5
Turner, Scott 30 3-5 4.50 9 58 32 1.50 5.0
Marks, Eric 28 4-4 3.75 10 57 47 1.58 7.3
Trevino, Javier 29 3-5 4.53 8 47 23 1.17 4.3
Clemment, Luke 25 1-1 5.91 2 10 10 1.31 8.4

The Expos brought up Luke Clemment when Javier Trevino went down with injury. With Trevino out for 3 more weeks, Clemment will hopefully fill the role of the 5th starter. His 1st start was brutal but he did go 8 + plus shutout innings in his last start before giving up a solo HR. Eddie Hernanez is looking like he could be a number 1 starter soon. He has won 3 of his last 4 starts giving up just 4 earned runs in 30.2 innings. Eric Marks has been better his last 3 starts going 21.2 innings with just 5 earned runs. He won all 3 of those games. His whip is higher then his career average of 1.23 mostly because of control issues (walks) Jamari Taft still hasn't put it all together this year. Last year he had 12 quality starts in 19 games (.632) vs 6 QS in 11 starts (.545) this season. Opposition hitters are hitting .291 this year vs his career average of .251. Scott Turner has lost his last 3 decisions giving up 15 earned runs in just 26 innings. I suspect that this maybe the last season he pitches in an Expos uniform with hope that one of the young arms in AAA will make his way up.

Gonzalez, Eddie 25 0-0 0.00 0 3 3 0.67 9.0

LHP Jesse Deck has not lived up to expectations for Montreal, his career ERA is 3.64 and his career whip is 1.18. He was only signed for 1 year but at age 31 if he can turn it around we could use the left arm next year. Young RHP Will Gibson didn't see the hill much since getting called up after CL Mark Holmgren went down. He showed enough that he will stay with the Expos until Holmgren is ready. LHP veteran Robbie Jones has been doing the job getting tough lefties out. In 20 innings he has given up just 2 earned runs. A big part of his improvement this year has his walks per 9 innings has dropped from 5.4 in 1975 to 2.6 in 1976. RHP Frank Lynn did not make the Expos out of spring training after a decent year in 1975. He has pitched pretty well considering his career whip is 1.39 and his opposition's career BA is .247 compared to .100 this year. LHP Dave Marland did not show well in 4.1 innings last year when had a 6.23 ERA and 1.85 whip. He has only pitched 10.1 innings this year, but he has been much better. RHP Chris Muckenfuss has been pretty much lights out giving up just 1 earned run in 14 innings. The 26 year old looks like he could be a long term option out of the pen. CL Aiden Beasley has worked out remarkably well in Holmgren's absence. He is 7 for 8 in save opportunities and opposition hitters are hitting just .063 against him.

Montreal Catchers AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB
Samms, Nate 34 41 158 0 16 .285 .660 0
Capellan, David 24 19 39 2 4 .205 .698 0

Who would have guessed the back up C David Capellan would have more HR's then veteran Nate Samms. Capellan is not lighting it up at the plate but he was better then last year and will stay with the club. Nate Samms is signed until 1979 and has his power just dried up. The lowest HR total he has had in his career is 9 and that was in 1972. He has made a few more errors and his CS rate has dropped from a high of 43.8% to around 26 % this year.

Montreal Infielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB

Rodriquez, Alberto 26 7 9 0 0 .111 .222 1

Veteran 1B Cory Carlson is having a decent year, but it is clear that his role is diminishing with 1B Darren Maher the future. Carlson is in his final year of his contract but his hitting over .100 points better then his career average OPS of .775. 3B Alberto Rodriquez has not really shown well in his 1st couple call ups to the bigs. He was called up to give Darren Maher a chance to work on his game and will get demoted. The 22 year old Maher hit .304 with 3 HRs and 21 RBIs in 26 games in AAA and will be called back up. 3B Gene Watkins has seen his offensive production drop the last 3 seasons. After 4 straight seasons of +.700 OPS's (.740, .745, .707 and .781) he has been (.685, .686 and .634) He is on pace for his worst BA and is a career .274 hitter. SS Tony Delgado missed much of the season due to injury, but his return is not expected to help the offense. Delgado is all about defense as proven by his 1975 SS Gold Glove. SS Robert Duran is much a copy of Delgado, defense.... no offense as he did a great job when Delgado went down. 2B David Sanchez is improving in the batters box, as well as driving in runs. He has 13 extra base hits already compared to 11 last year. He also only had 19 RBIs last year.

Montreal Outfielders AGE GMS AB HR RBI AVG OPS SB

Gonzalez, Ricardo 29 19 59 1 5 .153 .444 0
Irons, Jesse 27 19 52 1 2 .173 .496 2

LF Ricardo Gonzalez hit 9 HRs and had 35 RBIs last year, he has struggled at the plate this year and will get demoted to AAA Seattle. The same can be said for Raul Rodriquez, he hit .326 last year with 4 HRs and 27 RBIs in 71 games. He is barely above .200 this year and his OPS dropped from .853. He as well will go to Seattle. LF Joe Woodbury is better then last year, but still far off his career averages with a .724 OPS and his 12-13 HRs per year. CF Bobby King is in his rookie season. The jury is still out on whether he will be a long time regular with the Expos, but for now he has started 43 of the Expos 50 games. CF Danny Plantz is finally a full time player, leading the NL with 27 SBs but his power numbers are down from last years .447 SLG compared to .377 this year. Something could be said for the small sample size last year as he played in just 23 games. Jesse Irons will be called back up for Montreal, he hit .368 with 4 HRs and 13 RBIs in 23 AAA games since being sent down by Montreal. RF Jorge Alonso will also be promoted, he is hitting .232 with 1 HR and 17 RBIs in 38 games in AAA.

Offensively the numbers are still bad, although slightly better, not significant to help the team win. The Expos will need a power bat. Pitching wise, the team is much better in the 2nd half then the 1st.

Montreal Starters AGE W-L ERA GS IP K WHIP K/9
Taft, Jamari 28 6-5 3.53 16 99 96 1.38 8.7

Clemmet, Luke 25 1-2 6.33 4 21 18 1.59 7.6

Eddie Hernanez is looking like he could live up to his expectations as a #1 starter in Montreal. 10 of his last 11 starts have been quality starts and the 11th one he left the game with knee pain after 3 innings and did not give up a run. Hernanez is 6th in the NL with his 2.55 ERA while there are 3 pitchers in the NL with 1 more win at 10. Hernanez is alos the NL leader with just 6.04 H/9 and 0.19 HR/9. Eric Marks has not had a win in his last 4 starts, in fact his last 2 starts he went 3 and 4 innings. Marks has struggled with control and leads the NL with 44 BB's. Jamari Taft is 3-1 in his last 5 starts, he has had 6 straight quality starts since June 7th and reduced his ERA from 4.97. Taft is 2nd in the NL with 8.7 K/9. Javier Trevino has struggled since returning from his injury, in those 2 starts he allowed 7 ER in 14.1 innings but gave up 18 hits. Scott Turner has allowed just 1 ER in his last 2 starts totaling 13 innings, both were wins.

LHP Jesse Deck is still not pitching to his career numbers, he has a 3.64 career ERA and 1.18 Whip. RHP Mark Holmgren returned from injury and has lost his closer job, he has made 5 appearances since returning from injury and has pitched 5.1 innings allowing 3 ER's. LHP Robbie Jones last gave up an ER on May 3rd, that is 24 straight relief appearances without an ER. RHP Frank Lynn was recalled to the MLB on May 19th, he has given up 7 ER's since returning, but 5 were during a 10-6 loss to the Mets on June 29th. LHP Dave Marland had 8 straight appearances after his recall with out giving up a run, he gave up his only 2 in a 5-3 loss to the Phillies on July 2nd. RHP Chris Muckenfuss has appeared in 25 games, 12 of them were less then 1 inning. CL Aiden Beasley took over the role of closer after Mark Holmgren got hurt, opponents are hitting just .102 against him and he has saved 14 of his 15 save opportunities.

Samms, Nate 34 60 226 0 19 .261 .637 0
Capellan, David 24 28 66 2 5 .182 .558 0

Dave Capellan is not getting much playing time behind Nate Samms, and Ricky Shvartsman is hitting real well in AAA, the 27 year old is hitting .332 with 7 HRs and 49 RBIs in 58 AAA games. Capellan will go to AAA and Shvartsman will get promoted. Nate Samms has yet to hit a HR, his batting average is better then he has been most of his career (.251) but he has driven 45-60 runs a year and he may not get to 25 this year.

1B Cory Carlson is in his final year of his contract, he hit .306 in June and has 3 hits and 7 AB's in July, but will we resign him when the future is Darren Maher. 1B Darren Maher struggled his 1st 25 game with the Expos but hit .246 with 2 HR's and 7 RBIs in June. The Expos maybe looking for an upgrade at 3B as Gene Watkins offensively is having a poor season. After hitting 11 HR's in 1973 the expectations were high for him, he has also fallen off his career average of .270. This year Watkins is 6th in the NL with 69 strikeouts. SS Tony Delgado has had 8 hits in his last 21 at bats improving his BA from .186. The Expos have 2 of the MLB's best fielding short stops, the other is Ricardo Duran. Duran hit for average in 11 AAA games last year (.313) and 80 AA games over the past 2 years (.257), it has progressed into the MLB yet. 2B David Sanchez is having his best offensive season, he has 6 HRs and 29 RBI's which are career highs. He had 3 HRs in June. Sanchez leads the NL with 8 triples.

LF Mat Garnett has hit well since coming to Montreal, he is hitting .265 with 7 HRs and 28 RBI's combined the Expos and Blue Jays this year. LF Joe Woodbury was signed to give the Expos some veteran presence he has done that. Not sparkling numbers like his 19 HR's in 1971, but good enough to give some guys days off and is hitting .275 with RISP. CF Bobby King is in his rookie season, he has not been as effective as he was in April and May only hitting .226 in June and .125 so far in July. He is ranked 1st with a 1.091 Defense Efficiency at RF. CF Danny Plantz leads the MLB in SB's, he has a chance of breaking the MLB record for SB's in a season. This is his 1st full season in the MLB, he played 48 games in 1974 and 24 in 1975. RF Jesse Irons had 9 HR's and 36 RBIs last year, he is struggling to keep his spot this year. He has been effective as a PH going 4 for 9 and hit well is RISP (.261).

The Expos just could never find a wayto beat the Cardinals this season and the hitters couldn't score with basesloaded and just one out in the top of the 9th, which seemed to be acontinual story line all season. It was certainly an interestingpitching match-up, former Expos star SP Aaron Cregg vs the player hegot traded for, SP Jamari Taft. But neither pitcher was around forthe decision as the Cardinals got a 2-run walk off HR in the 9th.Jamari Taft allowed 1 run on 5 hits with 7 Ks over 7 innings but leftwith the score tied 1-1. RHP Curtis Muckenfuss (0-4) took the loss,he allowed 1 run on 0 hits in his 1 inning of work.
