BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1893 AMAZING WEE WILLIE! ![]() As the league pennants were filled with less drama this season in comparison with most seasons, the baseball world was entranced with some historic performances at the plate. None bigger then the newest superstar of the game, 21 year old Willie Keeler of the Washington Senators. Fans have wondered for years if any hitter in the game would be able to bat over the elusive .400 mark over the course of a long season. Many have tried like Dan Brouthers and Ross Barnes but never has anyone been able to get there. Willie Keeler not only reached the .400 mark, but shattered the single season batting record with the unthinkable mark of .417. Keeler had 167 hits in 400 atbats and got five hits in his last 10 atbats including a 4-5 day against the Athletics to close out the season. Everyone in Washington could be heard on the streets and in the homes proclaiming "Go Wee Willie" as the petite hitter has come to be known. Keeler, a Brooklyn native, is in his third season with the Senators and has already showed a great ability to put the bat on the ball for solid contact in any situation. Keeler .302 last season but no one expected him to put togehter the kind of season he did in 1893. "I love to hit" said Keeler, "for me there was really no stress in this batting race, I just take each time at the plate as doing my job and helping my team win." In a unbelievable season for batter Keeler wasnt the only man to acomplish the .400 mark. Tuck Turner of the Philadelphia A's also had an incredible hitting season and in some people's eyes had an even better season then Keeler. In 480 atbats Tucker had 185 hits and ended with a .406 batting average. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THOMPSON SETS HIT MARK 216 hits! The year of the hitter could be seen in Chicago as well as the star of Sam Thompson continues to grow. Thompson had a season to remember and set the all time record in hits with 216 topping the previous record of 210 set by Jack Glasscock in 1888. Thompson led the league in a number of offensive catagories including RBI (125) and runs (126). The 125 RBI by Thompson tied the record by George Wood who set it in 1887. The other Chicago Colts statistics for 1893 show a great offensive year but a team that struggled with injuries and especially their pitching.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Can Boston Finally Win It All? The World Series is set and the pressure continues to mount of the Boston Beaneaters who again enter the post season as the favorites and the best record in the game. The Beaneaters have demons of their recent past to overcome as the team that has broken almost all regular season records tries again to win it all. The Beaneaters lost the last two World Series despite having the better record and what most people say the better team. Last season the team lost to the cross town Boston Americans despite winnng 112 games and two years ago they lost to another team, the Lousville Colonels. Speaking of course of Louisville they again will be the opponent for the Beaneaters in the big showcase of the game of baseball. "Its time for us to redeem ourselves against all our critics" said manager Steve Denton. "We just cant put too much pressure on ourselves and need to go out and play." Another loss by the Beaneaters can turn ugly as the city expects them to win after the past disapointments. |

You guys really collapsed toward the end of the year, wow. Of course, your whole team got hurt so who can blame you. Hopefully a healthy team next year allows you to compete with Boston, although they are still very very good. Go Louisville!

BASEBALL MONTHLY September 1893 BEANEATERS FINALLY BRING IT HOME The Boston Beaneaters are deserved champions of baseball sparking celebrations throughout New England and the burroughs of Boston. Boston has become the unofficial capatal of baseball having won 5 championships between their two teams. The Beaneaters had fallen short the past two seasons and the third attempt was the charge as the Beaneaters completely outplayed their opponents from Louisville and won everygame played outscoring their opposition 36-16. Credit was given to the front office that made the appropriate risky changes to make a great team into a champion; the late season addition of Herman Long for popular Billy Nash. Ed Delahanty proved his star status as well batting .421 for the series and showing his leadership in the middle of the order. Teams will now scramble to try and close the gap with the Beaneaters who are as good as it gets. A recap of the World Series shows that it was one of the most lopsided series in the history of the game: Game 1 at South End Grounds
WP: G. Weyhing LP: E. Dugan George Decker hit a two run home run to tie the game for the Beaneaters who had fallen behind early. Boston came around to take a two run lead from a Herman Long single in the 8th. With the tying run on second base Gus Weyhing completed what he started by getting Dummy Hoy to pop out. This was the closest game of the series. Game 2 at South End Grounds
WP: B. Black LP: B. Sanders A six run first inning and the Beaneaters left any drama out of game two. Ed Delahanty went 4-5 and Germany Long drove in three runs as the two hitters dominate Lousville pitching. Bob Black cruised to the complete game win despite the four errors by the defense behind him. Game 3 at Eclipse Park
WP: G. Weyhing LP: E. Dugan Louisville had their turn at bad defense and commited five errors when they couldnt afford it. Bill Dahlen scored four runs and Hugh Duffy drove in three. Canonball Weyhing got his second win of the series in a game that really again wasnt close. Game 4 at Eclipse Park
WP: B. Black LP: B. Sanders The clincher was a sloppy game but again the Beaneaters were too much. Hugh Duffy went 4-6 and ended the series with a .500 average. The Beaneaters ended up with 20 hits and had an emphatic clinching win. No one could really argue that the Beaneaters were in complete control. The final out was an ultimate relef for the franchise who brought the title home for the first time since 1874. -------------------------------------------------------------------- League Notes

BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1894 New Western League Is Born There is balance in the baseball world again. Even if the balance isnt exactly on the field where the the rest of the sport does its best to catch up to the dominance of the Boston Beaneaters, the National League has a new rival. Picking up where the American Association left off in the 1880's a new league with a fresh start is here. Ban Johnson, a lawyer from Norwalk Ohio has gathered investors to start what is being called the Western League. The league will incorporate the old American Association teams that were being temporarily run by the National League. Johnson promised to immediate changes of shakeups but financed a new structure for the eight teams from Detroit, Boston, Chicago, Louisville, Washington, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Baltimore. For the past two seasons many were saying the National League was secretly favoring its own major teams which many thought was a big reason why the competive balance was so off. Johnson talked about his vision for the league: "Its all about competitive balance in any industry. We wil be run better then any current or past baseball league, although we will have a partnership with the National League, my feeling is we will build a product that is even better. The structure of the league, from the umpires to the stadiums, will prove our integrity. Rowdiness, gambeling, and unprofesionalism will not be tolerated." Immediate changes had players and fans alike impressed as stadium upgrades and better player contracts were welcome. CHICAGO READY TO CONTEND The Chicago Colts have been talking a good game all offseason and the insiders of the club are finally saying with confidence that this team can contend. The team awaits the return of Charlie Geggus who may be back in mid April but in the meantime address their biggest need on the pitchers mound. The Colts brought in two key free agents this offseason and hope the imprvements will be immediate. Foghorn Bradley may be 38 years old but the right hander is still one of the better relievers in the game and Al Spalding is ready to use him as such. Bradley may come on to get one inning done and could do his best work under pressure. Bradley has a career ERA of 2.50 and has walked only 81 men in his 15 ear career that started in Cleveland. The big acquisition however was not Bradley but rather 32 year old Charlie Hodnett. Hodnett comes to Chicago with great expectations after 9 solid seasons in St. Louis. Charlie has won 20 games or more in three seasons including last year and above all has proven to be a durable starter having started more then 40 game the past three seasons. Hodnett has a career ERA of 2.22 and a career WHIP of 1.22. If Charlie Geggus comes back close to 100%, Hodnett along with Harry Staley give the team a great starting rotation. The offense is a perenial power and will be feared throughout the league with the likes of Sam Thompson, Billy Earle, Jocko Halligan and Elmer Smith. And finally 41 year old Cap Anson says he is healthy and is back for his 24th season of baseball. Anson has seen it all in the game and still opens many eyes with his ability to recognize pitches and drive the baseball. The alltime hits leaders isnt even listening to rumors of a retirement and remains in the Colts everyday lineup. Chicago hopes all their preseason hope will translate to something close to a pennant. Sam Thompson put it best, "we are tired of hearing and reading about Boston." The Colts 1894 Roster:

I don't know why, but I think this is the year. Give Anson a championship before he's finally gone! Hopefully Geggus doesn't get hurt again, he is very injure prone in OOTP (he's gotten hurt in other sims I've done)

BASEBALL MONTLY April 1894 Keeping Pace With The Best The new season dawned and the snow and ice covered streets of Chicago melt away as baseball is back at the West Side Ground and optimism i on everyones lips. The Colts opened the season and low and behold the first team on their schedule were the best team in the land as the their nemesis the Boston Beaneaters visit Chicago to open the season. The Colts sent a message in the opening game beating Boston 10-5 on and starting on the right foot. In the second game however the champions responded and embarassed the Colts 21-3 on their home field. "We celebrated our opening day win a little too much and paid for it the following day" said Billy Shindle of the loss. Chicago came back however for the third game and got the win and took the series with a wild 13-12 win that ended on John Ward walk off single. The opening series win propelled Chicago to a very strong month as the Colts went 16-8 and are in the thick of things after the opening month. The big question for the Colts is if they can keep pace with Boston who also had their expected fast start at 18-6. In fact the Beaneaters have suffered four of their six losses to Chicago but have beat up on the rest of the league. The Colts were even more impressive taking two out of three at the end of the month in Boston. "We have showed we can play with them" said Cap Anson who is having another incredible season at the age of 41 batting .319 to start the league and leading the team with 23 RBI. "Its just a matter of getting up to play the weaker sides as well" The Colts were also bolstered by the return of Charlie Geggus from another long rehabilitation. Geggus was greeted by wild cheers as he took the mound on the 22nd against the Pirates. Geggus looked a little rusty as can be expected and went 1-2 in his three starts, having the ace back in the rotation for the time being however is a great advantage. The Philadelphia Phillies have also started strong in the league but keeping pace with Boston will be a giant challange. The Beaneaters are 320-144 over the past three seasons in which they took home the pennant.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bill Sweeney wins number 300 ![]() The Boston Beaneaters were proud of their most successful pitcher this month as Bill Sweeney bacame part of the exclusive 300 club with his win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 12th. Sweeney is having another excellent season already with a 6-1 record and the right hander has a legitimate shot of reaching the alltime record of 348 wins set by Al Spalding. Sweeney is in his 10th season and has won over 70% of his starts. Tim Keefe is also very close to Spalding's record and will probably get there first, Keefe of the Giants has won 332 games. Also, Pete Meegan also won his 200th game for the New York Giants this month.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stenzel Cracks Three In One Game Showing off prolific power Jack Stenzel wowed the Cleveland crowd as the 26 year old centerfielder hammered three home runs at the League Park against the Baltimore Orioles. Stenzel at 26 years old is know to swing for the fences and becomes only the second player in history to hit three long balls in one game, Ed Swartwood did it for the Orioles back in April of 1888. "I was seeing good, feeling good, and swinging good" said Jack after the game. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY May 1894 Injuries Rock Colts At Worse Time At the surface the Chicago Colts look at their 33-20 record and can be happy with the improvements they have made after two months into the new saeason. Still beyond the record is a deficit that has grown to seven full games as once again the Boston Beaneaters leave no room for error with their 40-13 record. "They simply keep getting better and better" says Colts manager Al Spalding, " it seems as if no one in the league can beat them but us." Spalding has a point as the Colts have beaten the Beaneaters six times already this season; the rest of the National League combined has beaten them a total of seven times. The Colts tasks has been made more difficult due to injuries. Charlie Geggus has made a succesful return but other stars are sitting out. Here is a look at the disabled list at the end of May:
Of course the loss of Sam Thompson is the biggest but almost as important is the loss of Billy Shindle and his glove as well as Jocko Halligan at the top of the order. Halligan has the most serious of the injuries as the outfielder is still experiancing memory loss and is being evaluated by doctors after his concussion. The Colts did bring back George Dandy Wood this month to help the depth of the outfield. The former Colts is still a fan favorite and Wood fit right in before he was injured with a sprained ankle. With the Colts Wood batted an incedible .457 going 14 for 30 in eight games. George Wood is backSo can the Colts possibly stay in it? The odds are agains them but no one is even close to think about conceding the pennant. Much of the leadership is still coming from the 41 year old first baseman named Pops. "When we look over and see Cap Anson work as hard as he does everyday at his age, how can we possiby let up" said Billy Earle of his teamate and former team manager. Anson is batting .336 so far this season and has driven in 37 runs. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Standings

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1894 CHICAGO ROBS CLEVELAND OF STAR ![]() As the end of the month of June rolled around and it became even more apparent that this was another season that would be lost to the powerhouse Boston Beaneaters, the Colts of Chicago again looked to retool. The amatuer draft brought a good young arm in Al Orth, but the biggest move happened after a player trade with the Cleveland Spiders. Chicago brought one of the hottest hitters currently in the game when they acquired second baseman Hughie Jennings. Jennings who is at the prime of his career at 25 years old comes to Chicago batting .436 on the season. The Colts in the process sent outfielder Elmer Smith to the Spiders to complete the deal. The deal did not come uo short of controversy. The press has jumped all over the deal calling it "unfair" and "unbalanced". Many feel the Colts and Al Spalding worked behind the scenes to get the player without consulting the Spiders. To make the spotlight even bigger is the fact that the Spiders lead the Western League and are on pace to win the pennant, now they go forward with what many feel is minus their best player. Both Chicago and Cleveland deny any unethical behavior or backdoor payments. Al Splading ripped into the local papers and commented, "yes we are getting a great player, but Elmer Smith isnt exactly a slouch that we are sending to Cleveland!" Regardless for Chicago they add a potential huge star to an already excellent lineup. Chicago surely is doing everything they can to stock their roster and try to put an end to what appears to be a never ending dynasty in Boston. --------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keeler Streak Ends Willie Keeler continues to get better and better but the star came up just a bit short in his pursuit of a record. Wee Willie put together a long hitting streak that had the league in full attention. Keeler hit in 34 straight games and was knocking on the door of the all time hitting streak record held by George Wright at 36 games set back in 1880. George Wright keeps his recordOn June 24th however Ed Begley of the White Sox had other ideas and stepped up to the challange. Over 4000 fans were on hand as the 30 year old pitcher challanged Keeler and won. Willie went 0-4 ending his streak and making Begley a local legend in Chicago. Keeler and his teamates did not seem overly concerned about the streak as they ended up winning the particular game. Keeler teamate Mike Griffth added, "I have a feeling Willie will be right back with another long streak." Amatuer Draft Completed The annual 1894 amatuer draft took place this month. The Detroit Tigers had the first pick and chose Arlie Pond, a 21 year old right hander from Suguas Mass. The top five picks were: 1. Arlie Pond SP - Detroit Tigers 2. Tom McCreery OF - St. Louis Browns 3. Doc McJames SP - Pittsburgh Pirates 4. Mike Grady C - Boston Americans 5. Bill Everitt 3B - NY Giants The Chicago Colts took starting pither Al Orth. Orth is 21 years old and wasnt born far from Chicago in Tipton Indiana. Orth was thrown right into the Colts rotation and had an up and down two weeks of debut, Orth is 3-1 with a 4.50 ERA. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY July 1894 Hitting Dominates National Game Subtle changes to the game in the offseason when the Western League was created at first went unnoticed. Now however as the 1894 season moves towards its conclusion, it is apparent that hitting and offense is dominating the game maybe like never before. As of the first of July the numbers were staggering, the league average was .308, the highest that number has been since 1873 and up from .278 last season. A total of seven players were batting over .400, a mark that only two to three years ago was deemed close to impossible. Willie Keeler leads the entire league with a unthinkable .447 batting average. League ERA's have soared to 4.24 runs, this is up from 3.41 last season. The factors that have contributed to this are many. The pitchers mound was moved farther out in the offseason to allow batters to see the ball better at the plate. Willie Keeler has mastered the ability to "choke up" on the bat which a number of hitters have copied. This way the batter has a better chance of making contact and putting the ball in play. Better ballparks and new style bats, especially some models from Louisville Kentucky, have made hitting more standarized. Of course the league isnt complaining about the upswing in offense. More runs mean more excitement and more fans at the ball yards. Others say that Chicago manager Al Spalding is behind the puss with more equipment from his sporting company, some feel Spalding is trying to spur offense to offset the dominating pitching from the rival Boston Beaneaters. Regardless, surely records will fall as the "national game" continues to evolve. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cleveland Tries to Hang On Tense times in Cleveland as a history of weak baseball performances is finally being challanged. The Cleveland Spiders have led the Western League all season and now are on the brink of only their second pennant. The city is starving for a winner and with a month left the Spiders hold a four game lead over the Washington Senators. The teams face off six times against one another leaving the final result stil very much open. In the National League of course things once again have long been decided at Boston just seems to get better and better. Boston has a winning percentage of almost .75 percent and believe it or not attendance is down from last season. The Boston faithful might have actually grown bored of winning!

BASEBALL MONTHLY August 1894 Dreams Come Alive In Cleveland The forgotten haven of the baseball world has to have been Cleveland Ohio. The town has been there since the game began in 1871 but has been noting more then an after thought as it has seen other teams win year after year. Finally 1894 is going to be diffrent. The Cleveland Spiders won on the second pennant in the franchises history and the last time they won it was in 1882 but were quickly disposed of by Brooklyn. This time the optimism is diffrent as the team led the Western League for the majority of the season and won the pennant going away. Some were quite worried that the club had traded away their fortunes in the middle of the season when they sent away who many thought was their best player in Hughie Jennings. Jennings was sent away for outfielder Elmer Smith to Chicago and fans wondered if moneuy was more important then winning. Smith proved everyone wrong and quickly became a star and a fan favorite. In fact Smith was incredible batting .397 while driving in 42 runs in 55 games. A first championship would indeed be something grand, but waiting in their path is the best baseball team anyone has ever seen. Cleveland are Amercia's underdog as they face the defending champion Boston Beaneaters. Boston of course won the National League by 21 games and are the heavy favorites. For now however Cleveland can dream of its own glory. Star Jake Stenzel put it best, "If we are going to win our first championshup, we might as well make it a memorable one." ------------------------------------------------------------------- Final Standings
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JENNINGS WINS BATTING TITLE ON LAST DAY ![]() A hsitoric batting season in many ways ended this month and the Chicago White Stockings can be proud of two of their warriors. Six players batted over .400 to end the 1894 season but the record holder and ahead of everyone in the pack was Hughie Jennings who ended at .431. Jennings alos broke Willie Keeler's record for hits with 234. Jennings beat out Ed Delahanty of the Boston Beaneaters who ended at .430. "At least we beat Boston at something this year" said Al Spalding sarcastically, but the feat was a special one. Other great achievments included Jake Stenzel who set records with RBI (134) and total bases (363). Dan Brouthers set the all time record in triples with 34. Chicago ended the year batting .315, their best mark ever and 2nd in all of baseball Sam Thompson also had an incredible year ending at .413. Chicago had other good signs as they won 77 games. Charlie Geggus make a nice rebound from major injury in 1894 going 14-12 with a 3.33 ERA. Rookie hurler Al Orth was especially effective and impressive going 13-5 with a 3.31 ERA. Chicago stats:

BASEBALL MONTHLY World Series Edition Boston Are A True Dynasty Love them of hate them the Boston Beaneaters are without a doubt head and shoulders better then everyone else in the National Game. The Beaneaters from Boston pushed aside the upset attempt by the fairy tale Cleveland Spiders to win their second consecutive world title and their fourth overall. Boston disposed of Cleveland in five games and had outstanding performances from Bud Black who won twice and allowed only two runs in 19 innings and from Cupid Childs who batted .450 and drove in 11 runs. Will Boston ever lose? The national media and the Boston fans are beginning to think not. A recap of the series of 1894... Game 1 From South End Grounds
WP: B. Black LP: C. Fergusen Losing four to two the Beaneaters turned the game around just when they had to in the seventh inning scoring four runs, Cupid Childs with the big hit in the inning. Bud Black looked in complete control and the Spiders alreay started to look like they doubted. Game 2 From South End Grounds
WP: N. Hudson LP: G. Weyhing Just a great baseball game and Cleveland showed heart that one rarely sees. The Spiders were down seven runs before they fought all the way back and took the lead in the 10th inning. Boston tied the game but in the 11th an error and a Tim ORourke single gave them enough to win. At this moment one might think that Cleveland just might be a team of destiny. Game 3 From League Park
WP: B. Black LP: C. Fergusen Boston had the perfect man on the mound to rebound from their emotional loss. Bob Black shut down the Spiders and the two runs in the first inning for Boston set them on their way. Cupid Childs was locked in and drove in three of the five Boston runs. Game 4 From League Park
WP: G. Weyhing LP: H. Goodall Up three to nothing to start this game Cleveland tried to hang on but Boston soon exploded and turned this game into a route. Five Cleveland errors didnt help as the nerves were now showing for the more inexperianced side. Childs drove in three for the second consecutive game and as fans left League Park; most knew the series was over. Game 5 From League Park
WP: B. Sweeney LP: H. Boyle Three in a row for the great Boston team that did it with ease and won their championship. Bill Joyce and Childs both hit home runs and Boston set up their leader Bill Sweeney to carry the win home. Sweeney who is maybe the best player Boston has ever had and their winningest pitcher, was on the mound for the last out. |

BASEBALL MONTHLY March 1895 'WE ARE GOING TO OUTRUN EM AND OUTSMART EM' Yet another season of baseball comes to its dawn in the nation after a long cold summer in many cities, none more so of course then the cold midwest of Chicago. Inside the cold the Colts are happy that they had their most successful season in 8 years and the third best record in baeball; but none of it even close to answering the biggest question in the game, can anyone beat the Boston Beaneaters? Colts manager Al Spalding was instrumental in anchoring a number of changes again this offeason that could make the diffrence. The biggest move was the acquisition of outfielder Dummy Hoy, the 32 year old star has already proven to be one of the most electric players in the game. His story of course is even more amazing as Hoy is deaf and still plays like a superstar even with his disability. Hoy is one of the fastest players in the game with 215 stolen bases. Hoy will bat leadoff and have many remembering Billy Hamilton who wowed Chicagon fans in their recent past. Dummy Hoy .281 career hitter"We have the best offense in the game" says Spalding. "we are going to outrun and outsmart Boston this time around, Im sure of it." In order to make room for Hoy the Colts let go of Jocko Halligan. Halligan has a world of talent as he has showed but never was able to live up to his potential due to a career riddled with injuries. Halligan goes accross town to the White Sox and gets to keep his home and family in Chicago. The Colts brought in short stop Lou Bierbauer as well to solidify the infield. Lou is 29 years old and is considered one of the smartest players in the league. He is a good fielder with a .293 career average. The pitching staff remains the same in the starters as the side is banking that Charlie Geggus will continue to stay healthy and anchor the staff. The relief side did change up as gone as pitchers like Phenomenal Smith and Foghorn Bradley. Nig Cuppy will take on the role of closer and John Clarkson along with Charlie Bartson look to help getting those crucial outs. The biggest hope is of course with the young arm of Al Orth, who had a gret rookie season and will have everychance to improve and do it even better. The team 1895 roster:

BASEBALL MONTHLY April 1895 Boston Be Warned; Here Comes Chicago After the first month of a new season not much can be concluded but in the National League anytime a team in the recent past can finish ahead of the Boston Beaneaters and play better baseball, it is definately worth noting. The Chicago Colts and manager Al Spalding have been building a team for years that could finally get over the hump of the pennnat; after a 19-6 month of April the excitement and hope is gaining super momentum. It all didnt start off great this year for the Colts as they opened the season losing four of their first five games and had only a 2-4 record heading into their home opener. News then came down from the league that Boston ace hurler Bob Black suffered took a line drive off the forearm and will be out for close to three months. Black is the clear ace of the Boston staff and will definately hurt them in the long run. Despite this the Colts needed to start winning on the field and before their home opening game against the New York Giants the players held a meeting behind closed doors and it was said veteran Chicago legend Cap Anson challanged his teamates to quit making excuses and start playing to win. The 43 year old star still is playing excellent baseball and is a testament to hard work and preserverence. Cap Anson still getting the job doneThe motivation fueled a fire in the team. The Colts ran off not 5, not, 10, but 13 straight victories in a scorching run. The wnning streak was culminated with a three game series against the Beaneaters in Chicago. The Colts swept Boston away and had a highlight with a walk off home run from Billy Shindle in the game on Saturday. Record crowds came out to the West Side Park and Boston looked more vulnarable then anyone could remember. Top performances for the month from new man Dummy Hoy who sets the table and is batting .337 with 24 runs scored. Billy Earle has 27 RBI to lead the team and Anson looks 20 years the younger batting .328. Back and in good form on the mound is Charlie Geggus, he may not be the pitcher he once was, but Geggus is a fan favorite and a testament to hard work against adversity. Boston is still very much a factor and sit only two games behind the first place Colts. For the moment however there is great excitement in Chicago, the manager though is much more cautuious then many others: "We appreciate all the attentin for the good opening month that we had, but this is a long season and we cant lose focus for even a minute. We know Boston will be right with us until the end." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Standings

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1895 An Old Record Falls ![]() There is something special about a hitting streak, it tends to take on a life of its own and grows as the number increases. Everyone likes a consistent player and a player that does his job well everytime they play. This month in the National game the 15 year old record for a hitting streak was embarked upon and overtaken by another young star of the game that is ushering in a new generation. George Davis was only 9 years old when George Wright went on his tear of 35 straight game with a hit. Wright stood proudly behind the record even after he retired, but all good things have to come to an end. Davis has all the tools as a player and his approach at the plate is an art worth watching. Davis approached the streak and stayed low key even after he got over 30 games and the press wanted words from him. Davis kept working and when the Giants came to town the spotlight was high and Davis kept it up getting his streak up to 35 games and tying the record. In Pittsburgh with a first inning single Davis broke the record and George Wright was on hand to congratulate the kid. The streak would last to 38 games but above all that Davis is a fine season batting .389 with 38 RBI on the young season. Later Davis reflected on the achievement, "Hopefully my streak wont last for 15 years. I say this because I intend on breaking it before then!" Boston Relentless In Race With Colts The Boston Beanesaters dont like being in second place and as the month of May came to a close the champs had overtaken the Chicago Colts by a single game in what could turn out to be a great two team race. Boston even without their ace Bob Black make it difficult for anyone to keep pace with them as they play at their usual rate. The Colts have had some difficulty finding a third starter and have waffled between Cyclone Miller and Charlie Bartson. Ed Delahanty for the Beaneaters is proving to be one of the true stars of the current game as the center fielder is leading the league in hitting with an amazing .459 rate. ![]() Can the Colts keep up with the high level of play? "We have to stay consistent" says Charlie Geggus, "We know Boston is going to win at a high rate, so we have to do the same. We cant doubt ourselves. The month of June will go a long way in defining the rest of the season the Colts need to respond as they find themselves in second place for the first time since the opening week of the year. ----------------------------------------------------------------------

BASEBALL MONTHLY June 1895 June Swoon For Colts Dooms Chances All the optimism of the end of the month of May where the Colts looked to be determined to dethrone the mighty Boston Beaneaters went the wayside as June proved to be an excruisigating month in the Windy City. The Colts fell from the top of the division in a hard swift way winning only 9 games and suffering a stretch where they lost 12 of 13 games. The team fell into a desperate state and lost its full confidence, where in contrast the Beaneaters took full advantage and once again built a commanding lead in the league. It was hard to pinpoint an exact problem for the team but defense was definately one of them as errors cost them a number of games in the stretch. The pitching was average behind Charlie Geggus as Al Orth but the inability to depend on a third starter was a problem every third day. The Colts made a trade to try and right the ship sending John Ward to the White Sox for pitcher Mark Baldwin. The move was partly inspired to make room in the lineup for top draft pick Dan McGann. The end of the month the club tried to get out of their funk and the as they faced Boston in a crucial three game series in Boston. The Colts beat the Beaneaters 8-4 to end the month but are still a bad 8 games behind the leaders. Al Spalding is taking much of the heat for the recent demise as the manager is believed not to be getting the most out of a very talented team; some say Spalding is just too involved in non baseball buisness that keeps him away from the team too often. Team statistics:
----------------------------------------------------------------------- Tim Keefe the King of Wins ![]() Tim Keefe has taken the mound 698 times in his career and has managed to win 349 times. Keefe this month, on June 1st. passed Al Spalding as the winningest pitcher of all and is capping an excellent career at the age of 38 with the New York Giants. Keefe is adored by the New York fans after his legendary years in Brooklyn where he had over 20 games 11 times. Keefe is also the alltime leader in strikeouts with 2838. The end of his career is soon coming but Keefe has left a giant impression on the game as maybe the best to ever throw. "Its a whole lot of wins" said Keefe after the record breaker against the Reds, "its something I have been blessed to do for so long and thank all the players who helped me get here." ----------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- League Notes Top picks in recent amatuer draft: 1. Arlie Pond SD - Detroit Tigers The Tigers pass on Lajoie and go wit the arm of Pond. The fans were not happy with this decision but to his credit the 22 year old kid from Sagnus as a bright future. 2. Nap Lajoie 1B - St. Louis Browns Celebrations in St. Louis as the Browns got their man and maybe the biggest talent to come into the game since Wille Keeler. Lajoie has star written all over him and is mature for his 20 years. 3. Jerry Nops SP - Chicago White Sox Nops the hio native is exactly what the Sox need. The left hander has a great arm and many think he will be the Sox ace in no time. 4. Harley Payne SP - Cincinnati Reds With Cy Young already in the rotation many wondered about this pick and why the Reds didnt draf high hitting prsopect Fielder Jones. 5. Button Briggs SP - Pittsburgh Pirates Briggs from New York is expected to bring a much needed arm to the Pirates. Look for the lanky kid to be on the fast track. 6. Fielder Jones RF - Boston Americans Excitement about Jones and what he bring to the Americans. A late bloomer but a great contact hitter Jones for some is a steal with this pick. |
