Schilling Handcuffs Red Bats ![]() Cincinnati - The excitement at Riverfront stadium was load and present as the 90 Reds came home hoping to take the lead in their series with the 07 Red Sox and set up a home clincher in game 4. Curt Schilling however knows something about pitching in big games and the three time championship pitcher showed his veteran leadership and led the visiting Red Sox to a quite easy 6-1 victory for the advantage in the series.
Schilling struck out only two reds but held the home team five hits and went eight innings before giving in to John Papelpon who came on in a non save situation. Barry Larkin, Chris Sabo and Billy Hatcher went a combined 0-12 in the crucial game. Mike Lowell continues his great hitting in the middle of the Red Sox lineup and today he carried the load again. Lowell drove in the first four runs of the game including a monster three run home run in the 6th inning off Red starter Jack Armstrong. The long ball broke a close game open and was a mistake the Reds wouldnt recover from. Dustin Pedroia also had a nice game scoring twice and driving in two of his own runs from the number two hole. It was a sloppy game as both teams combined for four errors on the turf, but all excuses aside the Red Sox deserved their win tonight. Knuckle specialist Tim Wakefield now takes the hill to try and close out the series in game 4. Another full house will be on hand at Riverfront Stadium as Lou Piniella tries to pull out the stops to even up the series. Reds leaders like Sabo, Eric Davis, and Paul ONeil will have to step up now that its all on the line. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 Red Sox lead series 2-1

Just One Swing of the Bat ![]() Cincinnati- In tough situations and elimination games sometimes it takes just one swing of the bat to turn everything around. Such was the case tonight at Riverfront Stadium as Paul ONeil kept the 90 Reds alive.
Oneil led off the 12th inning with a dramatic walkoff home run off of Mike Timlin to give the Reds a 4-3 12 inning win over the 07 Red Sox and send the series to a deciding game back in Boston. No one who has watched this series would expect anything less. The Red Sox had looked to close things out in this one and did well to break out to a three run lead behind knuckle ball man Tim Wakefield. The Sox had loaded the bases with no one out and plated three runs in the second inning. In the bottom of the third however the Reds came back and tied the game on an Eric Davis double in the gap. JD Drew hit a long home run off Danny Jackson in the 4th as the Red Sox jumped right back on top. The lead seemed for a moment like it was going to stand for a while but in the 6th inning Mariano Duncan led off with a solo blast to tie the game again and show that their just isnt any quit to be found in Lou Piniella's men. The game then became one of stratedgy and lingered into extra innings. Both sides had real chances to score as the Red Sox had a man on third in the ninth but couldnt push him through. In the 10th the Reds had a man on second with no one out but couldnt get him home. So one swing off the bat changed everything in the 12th as Paul Oniell took a 2-1 Timlin pitch just over the right field wall as JD Drew made a diving attempt to pull it back. ONeill went 3-6 and seems to be more intense when he really needs to be. A great series now comes to its conclusion with chances being that Game 5 will provide another very close screenplay to see who will move on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 Series tied at 2

Reds and Browning Silence Boston; Move On ![]() Boston - Randy Myers pitched a perfect ninth inning to preserve the clinching 4-1 win for the 90 Cincinnati Reds over the 07 Red Sox that was crafted by the strong effort by starting pitcher Tom Browning. Browning won his second game of the series and struck out six while allowing only one run.
Paul ONeill was again the catalyst on the offensive side of things for the Reds as he drove in two of the four runs, staying hot after his walk off winner in game 4. The Reds scored two in the 3rd and two more in the fifth in exactly the same fashion as Barry Larkin and ONeill got back to back scoring singles off of Josh Becket. It is obvious that the intensity level of the Reds teams seems much too difficult to match and manager Lou Piniella deserves alot of credit for that. Royce Clayton was able to avoid the shutout for the home team but the fans had to sit on their hands in such a crucial game. The game was efficient and made to look easy for the visitors, and behind it all was Tom Browning who had all his pitches working against the big Red Sox bats like Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, and Mike Lowell, the three of them combined for a 1-12 night when their team needed them the most. "Im proud of Tom (Browning) and Im proud of our team," said Lou Piniella, "I feel as if I can go to war with these guys under any circumstances, against any opponent." The bitter loss will hurt Boston who took the series to the limit and could have closed it out twice after going up in the series 2-1. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 5 90 Reds win series 3-2

1905 New York Giants vs 1919 Cincinnati Reds 1919 Cincinnati RedsRecord: 96-44 Finish: Won World Series over White Sox Manager: Pat Moran Ball park:Crosley Field Runs scored: 577 Runs allowed: 401 Home Runs: 20 Team ERA: 2.23 Team AVG: .263 Key Players: Dutch Ruether SP (19-6, 1.82), Ed Roush OF (.321, 4, 71), Heinie Groh (.310, 5, 63) A team that doesnt often get their props because of the 19 Black Sox that they ended up beating. Still Pat Moran had this team built around pitching and was the last real champions of the dead ball era. Their offense could be in danger of not putting up enough runs so look for low scoring games and a lot of small ball; they are out to prove that they didnt become champions by a cheat. 1905 NY Giants Record: 105-48 Finish: Won World Series over Athletics Manager: John McGraw Ball Park: Polo Grounds Runs scored: 780 Runs allowed: 505 Home Runs: 39 Team ERA: 2.39 Team AVG: .273 Key players: Christy Mattewson SP (31-9, 1.28), Mike Donlin OF (.356, 7, 80), Sam Mertes OF (.279, 5, 108) Matty on the mound had what has to be considered the most dominant season by a starting pitcher in 05, he allowed 48 earned runs in his 37 starts. This team rarely fell behind and scored its own share of runs even though only two men was over the .300 mark. The Giants are similar to the Reds but the star of Matthewson seems to trump everything. Pitching matchups Game 1 at Polo Grounds: Dutch Ruether (19-6, 1.82) vs Chrsity Matthewson (31-9, 1.28) Game 2 at Polo Grounds: Hod Eller (19-9, 2.39) vs Joe McGinnity (21-15, 2.87) Game 3 at Crosley Field: Red Ames (22-8, 2.74) vs Slim Sallee (21-7, 2.06) |

Major Step For Reds As They Beat Mathewson ![]() Polo Grounds - Christy Mathewson doesnt usually leave the mound without his team celebrating a victory but after a long battle in New York today that went into extra innings, that is exactly what happened. Mathewson went all 11 innings and was hurt by his defense as the 19 Reds took a crucial game one win with a 3-2 victory in 11 innings.
The ramifications for the Reds on this win are very large indeed as they may have solved the key to victory in this series and passed the biggest obstacle in avoiding defeat with the Giant ace on the mound. Credit however needs to be given to Reds starter Dutch Ruether who also went 11 innings and only allowed one single earned run; to beat Mathewson one needs a performance like what Ruether gave today. Ruether on the day threw an incredible 159 pitches. Ruether did it with his bat as well as he gave his team the lead in the second inning. His ringing double to left field stunned the Giants and scored the first two runs of the game. "I closed my eyes and swung as hard as I could" said Ruether about his hit. The game stayed tight until the 5th inning when the Giants tied the game as Mike Donlin scored after a Larry Kopf error with two men down. Mathewson himself had two hits in the game and scored the first Giant run. The pitchers bore down as the spacious alleys of the Polo Grounds and the shadows of the batters box did their job. Mathewson actually looked like he was getting stronger and struck out 8 men on the afternoon, but it was his defense that would fail him in the end. In the 11th Greasy Neal reached on an error to start the inning by Sammy Strang at second base. The big error would come next however as Mike Donlin misplayed a fly ball in center field for a two base error as the runner from first beat the throw and came all the way around to score. Donlin heard it from the fans after the misplay load and clear. Ruehther kept the ball in the bottom of the frame and took the Giants down in quick order for the win. Now the Reds have a big chance to take a commanding lead in the series as they play game two with Christy Mathewson behind them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 19 Reds lead series 1-0

McGinnity Turns Mathewson Like Effort Polo Grounds - A day after losing the opening game of this series to the 1919 Reds with Christy Mathewson on the mound, the 1905 Giants got a Hall of Fame like performance from their number two starter to cool off the Reds and even this series at one game a piece with a 5-1 win.
The "Iron Man" as they call him took the mound and had it all working on this afternoon allowing only two hits for nine innings. McGinnity only threw 111 pitches and struck out three, the lone run allowed came off the bat of Jack Duabert in the third inning, a hit that at the time tied the game. Especially impressive was also the Giant defense behind their hot pitcher as Art Devlin was great at third and Mike Donlin made up for his game costing error in game one with a heck of an effort in center field today. No whistles and boos from the loyal fans on this day, only cheers and adoration. The game was tied at one as Reds pitcher Hod Eller was pitching a fine game of his own and had his team well in it. In the 6th however the Giants broke it open plating four runs. A Dan McGann triple broke the deadlock while a Reds error at short scored another run. McGinnity then singled in a run to help his own cause and give more insurance to himself for the stretch run. After the win John McGraw was as impressed as anyone with his starter's effort out there, "not a single man that came to the plate got a good look at Joe" said a confident manager, "he picked us all up with the effort and now we go to Cincinnati with a new found flavor and confidence." On the other hand Heinie Groh and the Reds still have alot to be confident about. "We split in the big city and can only be content with that; I feel game three could go a long way in deciding this series outcome." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 Series tied at 1

'We Didnt Even Show Up Today' ![]() Crosley Field - In the crucial game three of their series with the 19 Reds the 05 Giants made it know from the very fist pitch of their intentions and ran away with an easy 10-1 win in Cincinnati to take an important 2 games to 1 lead in this series.
The Giants scored 4 runs right off the bat against Reds starter Slim Sallee who had little working for him other then his obvious nerves on this afternoon in front of a capacity crowd. Dan McGann smashed a three run home run, a rarety for this Giants team, and thats all the visitors would need in their rout. Red Ames for the Giants was almost as good as Joe McCginnity was in game two. Ames allowed only one run on the day and went the distance with four strikeouts. The Giants staff in fact has allowed only one run in their previous 18 innings in this series. Despite four errors from his defense Ames was still too good, and allowed only 5 hits and not a single man on the Reds had a multiple hit game. Two triples scored two runs in the third inning, one by Ames at the plate. Then in the seventh the Giants scored three more as Sam Mertes doubled in two runs and Crosley Field was starting to become a graveyard as the Giants extended their lead to ten and already were thinking about Game 4 and their clincher. "We didnt even show up today" lamented Reds manager Pat Moran, "I want to apologize to our fans." So other then an extra inning loss by the Giants in game one that was almost given away due to an error, the Giants have really proven to be the superior team in this series and at this point at least, it looks very unlikely that the Giants in anyway can lose this series. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 05 Giants lead series 2-1

Wild Game Sends Giants Through ![]() Crosley Field - A clinching game is never an easy task as the 05 Giants found out a Crosley Field. A wild ninth inning sent this game to extra innings where a bases loaded walk and a passed ball gave the game to New York 9-7. The Giants win the series over the 19 Reds three games to one after dropping the opener.
Both teams went with less then their best on the mound for this game and the runs soon followed. Back to back triples helped plate two runs for the Giants in the first inning off Reds starter Jimmy Ring. The Reds did bounce back with two of their own in the third inning after loading the bases with no one out. A close game was really broken open by the Giants in the 8th inning when to their suprize another long ball came their way. Bill Dahlen showed his strength as he took a fast ball over the left fied wall for a three run home run and gave the Giants a commanding 4 run lead. The Reds however hung their heads for only a short while as this game was still far from over. The game went to the 9th and Dummy Taylor stayed on the mound but a leadoff error started things off sour. After a single Pat Duncan doubled in a run bringing up Greasy Neale. Neale then singled to center to score one and after a very close play at the plate to score another. Representing the tying run Neale then stole second base and was moved to third on a sacrafice. With one down Ed Roush flies to right and with Neale tagging up another close play was set at the plate; Neale got under the tag that would have ended the game and tied it in most dramatic fashion. An impressive comeback by the Reds indeed. Taylor stayed in the game and threw over 150 pitches in a determined effort. The Reds brought on their ace Dolf Luque to try and save the series and the game but it just wasnt meant to be. Luque didnt have his control and loaded the bases with one out. The Luque felt the pressure and he walked Dan McGann on four straight pitches and then a passed ball plated another. The series ended with what most would say had the better team winning. As John McGraw saw fit, losing was just not an option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 05 Giants win series 3-1

2001 Seattle Mariners vs 1940 Cincinnati Reds 1940 Cincinnati Reds![]() Record: 100-53 Finish: Won World Series over Tigers Manager: Bill Mckechnie Ball park: Crosley Field Runs scored: 707 Runs allowed: 528 Home Runs: 89 Team ERA: 3.05 Team AVG: .266 Stolen Bases: 72 Key Players: Frank McCormick 1b (.309, 19, 127), Bucky Walters SP (22-10, 2.48), Ernie Lombardi C (.319, 14, 74) The team took it all in the middle of the Yankee dynasty during a time when little was expected from the National League. Looking at their lineup really isnt going to scare anyone but a couple of 20 game winners who that the pitching was there. The team won 100 games and barely anyone remembers them, but the story of all champions in unique and this team played as good as anyone in a single season setting. 2001 Seattle Mariners Record: 116-46 Finish: Lost ALCS to New York Yankees Manager: Lou Piniella Ballpark: Safeco Field Runs scored: 927 Runs allowed: 627 Home Runs: 169 Team ERA: 3.54 Team AVG: .288 Stolen Bases: 174 Key Players: Ichiro Suzuki RF (.350, 127 R, 56 SB), Edgar Martinez DH (.306, 23, 116), Brett Boone 2B (.331, 37, 141) The most wins by anyteam in league history, and they still came up short. Looking back at their roster one isnt overwhelmed as this is after the Johnson/Griffey era. Still the team had incredible years from Mike Cameron and Brett Boone and Kaz Sasaki was the dominant closer that all good teams need. So was this team the biggest mirage ever to step on a field? Lou Piniella and his men think not, after all they did lose to a great Yankee team. Pitching matchups Game 1 at Crosley Field: Freddy Garcia (18-6, 3.05) vs Bucky Walters (22-10, 2.48) Game 2 at Crosley Field: Jaimie Moyer (20-6, 3.43) vs Paul Derringer (20-12, 3.06) Game 3 at Safeco Field: Junior Thompson (16-9, 3.32) vs Aaron Sele (15-5, 3.60) |

Mariners Walk All Over Reds in Opener ![]() Cincinnati - The game that was suppose to be fell apart all over Crosley Field as the 01 Mariners came to town and murdered the 40 Reds with a 10-1 win in the opening game of this series.
Seattle slammed 16 hits and got an impressive performance from starter Freddy Garcia who had the Reds stuck on one hit heading into the 9th inning. On the other side Reds starter Bucky Walters couldnt get out of the third inning and had control issues. "It was just a day to forget for us" said Lonny Frey, "we apologize to our fans but remind everyone that this is a best of five series, we will go after them all out in game two." John Olerud drove in three runs and Edgar Martinez scored three as the Mariners had a 7-0 lead after only three innings. No home runs were hit on the afternoon by either team but the Mariners slapped the ball all over the field. Freddy Garcia was super efficient throwing only 74 pitches and relenting his services to Kaz Sasaki in the ninth even though he most likely could have finished the job. Lou Piniella stayed cautious after the opening win, "we know that things are going to get tougher for us, we just caught them on a bad day." A bad day indeed as the Reds used five pithchers and had only three men get hits all afternoon. They will have to win at home to avoid going out west with little hope. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 01 Mariners lead series 1-0

Reds Even Things Up ![]() Crosley Field - Paul Derringer knew the importance of this game and wasnt about to let his team lose another one at home as his effort mostly allowed the 40 Reds to beat the 01 Mariners by a final of 5-3.
Derringer had the pressure to perform against a team and lineup that looked so strong in the opening game of the series. Derringer was as sharp as Freddy Garcia was for Seattle in game one and didnt allow an earned run until his departure in the 9th. Jaimie Moyer wasnt exactly having a bad game on the other side of the dugout as he went a full seven innings and left the game down by two runs and hoping for his team to rally for him. The rally would indeed come but not before the homse side would score some more. Ernie Lombardi drove in the first run of the day for the Reds in the third inning and Johnny Rizzo homered in the 4th off Moyer to extend the lead. The game and score remained this way until the 8th when the Reds scratched for more. Norm Charlton and Ryan Franklin didnt have much in the inning and three hits along with an error produced three more runs and the Reds five run lead looked like ten to most at the ballpark. Seattle showed some life in the 9th after Derringer left the game. Mike Cameron doubled in two runs and with two men on and two out there was legitimate hope the Mariners could really rally. Dan Wilson however grounded out to short and the series was even heading to Seattle. It is a best of three series now and the enviorment in loud Safeco Field is sure to be a factor. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 Series tied at 1

Mariners Choke It Away In The 9th ![]() Safeco Field - A dramatic three run rally in the top of the ninth carried the 1940 Reds to a vital 7-5 win in a game that looked lost to take a 2-1 series edge and gain control back of the series.
Ernie Lombardi had the go ahead hit and Billy Werber added an insurance run as Cincinnati beat up on Kaz Sasaki who just couldnt get the job done with a one run lead in the top of the ninth. "Its a devastating loss for us" say Piniella "we had this one in the bag and couldnt get the job done. This one will haunt us tonight but we need to be ready tomorrow to pick ourselves up." The Reds did take the early lead in this game by three runs with one in the first and two in the fourth off Mariner starter Aaron Sele. The Mariners then came back with five over the next three innings to take the lead. The big go ahead hit by David Bell who hit a bases loaded single and really got Junior Thompson in trouble. Frank Mccormick came back in the 8th and smacked a solo home run but Norm Charlton came on to close out the 8th and with a one run lead everything was sitting on the table for the Mariner win. But the Reds wouldnt quit and came roaring back to stun the capacity crowd a Safeco. "We played with heart" said Junior Thompson who was one of seven pitchers used on the day. "We have a chance now to show everyone how good we are with one more win." Will the Mariners, the 116 win Mariners, choke yet again? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 40 Reds lead series 2-1

A Champions Game, Mariners Brushed Aside ![]() Safeco Field - The 1940 Cincinnati Reds showed what it means to be a champion and play like there is no tomorrow. The Reds won their third straight game of this series and their second on the road knocking off the 2001 Mariners 4-2 and winning the series.
Ival Goodman came out with the big hit early for the Reds as he hit a three run home run in the second inning off starter Paul Abbott. Goodman hadnt really made his name known so far this series but did so in a big way in this one. With the lead Jim "Milkman" Turner was the man of the moment and had the task of holding the lead. He did allow 11 hits and the Mariners had 12 hits in the game but felt the pressure and never got the big blow. The game raced into the late innings and the Mariners faced a 4-2 deficit going into the 9th. The Reds brought on the original Fireman, Joe Beggs, to close out this one and the first two hitters were easy for him. Ichiro however is s diffrent story and the scarppy hitter nailed a triple to right field with two out. Edgar Martinez then drew a walk and with the tying runs at the plate Bret Boone came up representing the winning run. High drama indeed at Safeco. A line drive by Boone to left field but Jimmy Ripple was positioned perfectly and made the grab. The game and the series was over. All the critisism now falls on Lou Piniella and the Mariners as they prove once and for all that their dominant 116 win season just doesnt amount to much in a big series. Losing two in a row at home really sends that point home. The Reds move forward now in impressive fashion, their pitching was better then most anticipated and there will be definately more to come. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 40 Reds win series 3-1

1989 San Francisco Giants vs 2009 NY Yankees ![]() 2009 New York Yankees
Record: 103-59 Finish: Won World Series over Phillies Manager: Joe Girardi Home Park: New Yankee Stadium Runs Scored: 915 Runs allowed: 753 Home Runs: 244 Stolen bases: 111 Team ERA: 4.26 Team AVG: .283 Key Players: Mark Texeira 1B (.292, 39, 122), Derek Jeter SS (.334, 18 HR, 107 R), Alex Rodriguez 3B (.286, 30, 100) The pitching wasnt the most dominant and in some areas age began to show but this Yankee team was still great and polished. CC Sabathia and Mariano Rivera are more intimidating on the mound then most anyone and the hitting stars simply couldnt be stopped in big games. ARod finally came away a winner on the big stage and proved he can be great when he is needed to be. A typical Yankee powerhouse from top to bottom. 1989 SF Giants Record: 92-70 Finish: Lost World Series to Oakland A's Manager: Roger Craig Ball park: Candelstick Park Runs scored: 699 Runs allowed: 600 Home Runs: 141 Stolen bases: 87 Team ERA: 3.30 Team AVG: .250 Key players: Kevin Mitchell OF (.291, 47, 125), Will Clark 1B (.333, 21, 111), Rick Rueschel SP (17-8, 2.94) A team built in the mold of their leader Roger Craig, the pitching staff was tough to beat and kept opponents down in the score. Will Clark was the emotional leader of the team both at the plate and in the field, Clark seemed to come through everytime in 89. Kevin Mitchell had a year that couldnt be ignored, he did it all with the bat. The Giants werent a great team but still found a way to win a pennant and surely are a side with grit that could play with anyone. Pitching matchups Game 1 at Yankee Stadium: Rick Rueschel (17-8, 2.94) vs CC Sabathia (19-8, 3.37) Game 2 at Yankee Stadium: Don Robinson (12-11, 3.43) vs AJ Burnett (13-9, 4.04) Game 3 at Candelstick Park: Andy Pettitte (14-8, 4.16) vs Scott Garrelts (14-5, 2.28) |

Yankees Murder Giants In Game One ![]() Yankee Stadium - The champion Yankees know something about winning and came with a fire in their eyes for the opening game of this series against the 89 Giants. The 09 Yankees totally outclassed their opponents and walked away with a convincing 11-0 victory.
"There was no game today" said Giant manager Roger Craig, "they murdered us and we deserved it cause we didnt come to play." A sfot spoken Craig was quite critical of his team after this type of loss. The Yanks put together a 6 run third inning against Rick Rueshel who allowed 8 in the 2 plus that he threw. The Yankees used the bottom of their lineup for much of their punch as Brett Garnder doubled in two runs and Melky Cabrera had a big game driving in runs with a home run and a double during this stretch. New York in fact had only one long ball on the night but did pound 15 hits out. CC Sabathia was dominant. The burly right hander threw a nine inning shutout and was in perfect unison with catcher Jorge Posada. Sabathia struck out ten and only walked one man while allowing only 4 hits, not a single extra base knock. It was an easy night indeed at the Bronx with the only cheers late in the game coming for Brett Gardner who wowed the fans by stealing his third base of the game. The Giants had a shocked look in their eyes and need to rebound quickly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 1 09 Yankees lead series 1-0

Terry Kennedy And Giants Fired Up ![]() New York - Tired of hearing just how bad they were after their humiliating game one defeat the 89 Giants righted the ship in a big way and were able to outlast the 09 Yankees in game two 6-4.
It was a 4 run eigth inning for the visitors that changed their fortunes and have them squarely in the thick of things again. Terry Kennedy hit a three run bases clearing double to right center to push the Giants ahead by four runs. The shot came off of AJ Burnett who was showing signs of fatigue but Joe Girardi stuck with him. Kennedy had given his team the lead earlier with a long fly in the third inning before Candy Maldonado made the lead two for San Fran in the 4th with an RBI single. The Yankees stayed in the game and eventually got to Giant starter Don Robinson when Hideki Matsui hit a home run and Robinson Cano tied the game with a hit all coming in the 7th. The Giants saw their lead evaporate but didnt lose heart, Charlie Hayes opened the 8th inning with a solo home run, a big confidence boost in retrospect. In the bottom of the 9th Robinson could not close it out and Craig Lefferts came on. Lefferts allowed Cano to double two men on base and cut the lead to two while allowing the tying run to come to the plate. Still a closer always keeps his poise and Lefferts got Melky Cabrera to fly out and end the game. Many will wonder why Joe Girardi didnt go to his bullpen earlier in this one, Girardi was defiant in his response, "It didnt even cross my mind" he said. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 2 Series tied at 1

Yankees Blow Through Candlestick ![]() Candlestick Park - A four run fifth inning and a 12 hit attack allowed the 09 Yankees to take the upper hand in this series with a 5-3 win on the Bay against the 89 Giants. Andy Pettitte showed his experiance and guile on the mound while Mariano Rivera got his first save of the series.
Some Yankee fans had apprehension heading into game 3 of this series and the rouckous Candlestick Park fans showed up in full strength to cheer their side on. Still few teams know how to play better on the road then the resolute Yankees, it seems like no matter what the era, they play well anywhere. The Giants took the lead in the fourth when Will Clark towered a Pettitte breaking ball for a solo home run and the first baseman's fist pumping got some stares from the visitors. The lead ineed would only last a moment as the Yankees got things going in the fifth against Scott Garrelts. With no one out and a man on Alex Rodriguez made his first big impact of the series with a rope of a home run over the left field wall to give the Yankees the lead. The Garrelts fastball just didnt have enough on it. Pettitte then singled and Brett Gardner continued his great series with an RBI triple, before his was driven home by a Derek Jeter infield single. The Yanks added a run in the 5th before the Giants climbed back a bit. The other big bopper in the Giants lineup Kevin Mitchell hit a two run home run to make a game of things again. Mitchell brought the fans back into it but the Yankees soon found their footing again. Pettitte would go well into the 8th before Alfredo Aceves got him out of some trouble to push things to the ninth where Rivera made his first appearance of the series. Rivera struck out Ernest Riles to end the game and preserve the win. Roger Craig and the Giants under the circumstances would love to see New York again. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 3 09 Yankees lead series 2-1

Respect Or Not; Giants Almost There ![]() Candlestick Park - Despite many having them written off since their game one loss to the 09 Yankees and surely no one expecting them to even make a series of this the 89 Giants won again over their rivals 7-6 and now have moved the series back to New York for a deciding game 5.
"Even though we were down in the series it seemed like we had nothing to lose today" said Brett Butler. "now its anyone's game heading back to their place." The Yankees pinned their hopes in game 4 on Joba Chamberlain, the right hander has often been erratic especially in the big contests. Joba fell behind early by two runs including a very unexpected Mike Lacoss home run in the second inning. The Yanks continued to get production from the bottom of their lineup as Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera both drove in runs to come back and tie the game off Giant starter LaCoss. With the game tied at 2 it came the time for the Giants to make their move. Terry Kennedy drove in two of the runs and Will Clark another as San Francisco scored 5 runs in two innings to take a hold of the game and knock Joba out of the game. The Yankees would rue their lack of poise during these two innings. Now it was up to the Giants bullpen and it wouldnt be easy. In the 8th Rich Gossage came on and got into trouble. Loading the bases after allowing a run Jeff Brantley came on in relief and allowed a two run double by Eric Hinske to cut the lead to two runs. With two outs and still with the bases loaded Hideki Matsui forced in a run with a walk and the lead was down to one with Robinson Cano at the plate. With the biggest pitch of the game Brantley got Cano two ground out to second and leave the three men stranded. The one run lead survived. Craig Lefferts again came on in the ninth for the save. With a man on he got Alex Rodriguez to fly out deep to right but the wind killed the ball and the game went to the home side. "All we have heard is how much better they are then us" said Will Clark, "now we are about to upset alot of people by winning this bdarn thing." High drama now at Yankee stadium as a decisive Game 5 battle looms. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 4 Series tied at 2

No Doubt In The Bronx ![]() Yankee Stadium - This was suppose to be the stage for a dramatic and deciding 5th game of a very exciting series between to evenly matched teams. This evening however at Yankee stadium the 2009 Yanks put aside any such doubt as who the better team is and murdered the 89 Giants by a final desicive score of 15-2.
Almost at an embarrasing level the Giants couldnt keep up with New York when they needed to and with CC Sabathia throwing bullets on the mound, it was clear why even with this series even many never thought the Yankees wouldnt move on. Giant starter Rick Rueshel battled through the early innings but the reminders of a game one beating were again present and the Giants were down 5-0 after three innings. Four runs in the second came home capped by a two out double by Mark Texeira. Jorge Posada crancked a 3rd inning home run that was another mistake by Rueshell behind in the count. The Giants did get back two of those runs in the sixth and it looked that maybe they would make a game of it as they knocked Sabathia out of the game. Still all hope was lost in the bottom of the frame when the home team scored five more and extended the lead to 10-2. Melky Cabrera who has had an excellent series drove in two with a double and Posada and Derek Jeter also drove in runs as the Yanks knew the series was theirs. In the eigth inning the Yankees celebrated with their fans and culminated the series and to some truth embarassed the visitors. The Yanks added five more runs in the inning as Mark Texeira towered a big home run with a man on as the parade around the bases continued. In the end no one can really argue that the better team won. Joe Girardi and the Yankees never really looked like they could lose the series as they never trailed in games and when they needed something extra, they dug down and got more then that. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Game 5 2009 Yankees win series 3-2

2005 Houston Astros vs 2004 Boston Red Sox ![]() 2004 Boston Red Sox Record: 98-64 Finish: Won World Series over Cardinals Manager: Terry Francona Ball Park: Fenway Park Runs scored: 949 Runs allowed: 768 Home Runs: 222 Stolen bases: 68 Team AVG: .282 Team ERA: 4.18 Key players: Curt Schilling SP (21-6, 3.26), David Ortiz DH (.301, 41, 139), Manny Ramirez (.308, 43, 130) The Curse breakers and comeback kids few teams in baseball history have the lore as this team does. They didnt get many people out for long portions but they scored runs in bunches and got the big outs when it was all on the line. The team was brash and unpredictable but believed it could win any game, at times they even looked unbeatable. From bloody socks to dreadlocks, this team had it all. 2005 Houston Astros Record: 89-73 Finish: Won NL Penant; Lost World Series to White Sox Manager: Phil Garner Ball Park: Minute Maid Park Runs scored: 693 Runs allowed: 609 Home Runs: 161 Stolen bases: 115 Team AVG: .256 Team ERA: 3.51 Key players: Brad Lidge CL (4-4, 2.29, 42 S), Morgan Ensberg 3b (.283, 36, 101), Roy Oswalt SP (20-12, 2.94) The Astros were in many ways the opposite of the Red Sox using great starting pitching and a lights out closer to win the pennant. Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens complimented Roy Oswalt brilliantly as these top three arms will be tough for anyone to beat. The Stros have veteran players that know how to win and always seem to find themselves in close ball games. A fast team with good defense and instincts led by a hard nosed manager in Phil Gardner. Pitching matchups Game 1 at Fenway Park: Roger Clemens (13-8, 1.87) vs Curt Schilling (21-6, 3.26) Game 2 at Fenway Park: Roy Oswalt (20-12, 2.94) vs Pedro Martinez (16=9, 3.90) Game 3 at Minute Maid park: Derek Lowe (14-12, 5.42) vs Andy Pettitte (17-9, 2.39) Last edited by Nick Soulis; 08-30-2010 at 11:51 PM. |
