Davis' Homer Lifts Los Angeles to Game One NLCS Victory

Los Angeles--Wille Davis hit 15 home runs during the regular season. None was bigger than Saturday's.

Davis hit a one-out, game-winning homer in the tenth inning to lift the Los Angeles Dodgers to an opening game victory in the National League Championship Series.

The win gives the Dodgers a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-five series.

Pittsburgh, the NL East champions, took a 1-0 lead when leadoff hitter Fred Patek scored on a wild pitch in the third innning. Patek wound up with three hits in four at-bats.

Los Angeles, NL West winners, tied the game when pitcher Alan Foster scored on a ground out in the bottom of the inning. Foster reached base via a walk.

The Pirates, playing without All-Star Roberto Clemente who is sidelined with a sore wrist, took a 3-1 into the bottom of the seventh. Johnny Jeter, Clemente's replacement, and Gene Clines each had sacrifice flies.

However, the Dodgers scored three times in their at-bat in the seventh. The key blow was a two-run triple by Tom Haller.

Pittsburgh managed to send the game into extra innings, however, as Clines again delivered a sacrifice fly.

After reliever Jim Brewer set the Pirates down in the top of the 10th, Davis hit his game-winning home run off Pittsburgh right-hander Dave Giusti.

Game two will match each team's ace. Right-hander Dock Ellis (21-8) will take the mound for Pittsburgh. Los Angeles will counter with righty Bill Singer (28-13).

Powell Powers Baltimore Past Oakland in Opener

Oakland, Calif.--It should come as no suprise Boog Powell led the American League in home runs. Oakland received a reminder why Saturday.

In the opening game of the ALCS, Powell hit a three-run homer that wound up being the difference as Baltimore defeated Oakland 4-2.

Powell's 376-foot blast off A's starter Vida Blue followed a sacrifice fly by Frank Robinson and gave the Orioles a 4-0 lead in the third inning.

Felipe Alou led off the Oakland half of the third with a solo homer off Oriole starter Dave McNally.

The A's, holders of the best record in baseball during the regular season, closed to within 4-2 when pitcher Roberto Rodriquez doubled home a run in the fifth. However, McNally struck out Bert Campaneris and Tito Francona to end the rally.

Oakland again threatened in the seventh. Yet, McNally retired pinch-hitter Rick Monday and Campaneris with two runners on base to end the inning.

Baltimore snuffed another potential Oakland rally in bottom of the eighth when Brooks Robinson started a 5-4-3 double play to bail McNally out of further trouble.

Orioles' closer Dick Hall came on to pitch the ninth. After giving up a hit to begin the inning, Hall retired the next three batters to finish off the win.

Game two will feature right-hander Chuck Dobson (18-8) for Oakland against left-hander Mike Cuellar (22-11) for Baltimore.

Singer, Grabarkewitz Lead Dodgers Past Pirates

Los Angeles--The Singer Throwing Machine held Pittsburgh in stitches nearly all day.

Bill Singer, the National League's likely Cy Young Award winner, gave up just three hits and one walk in seven innings of work as the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 Sunday.

Thus, the Dodgers take a commanding two games to none lead in the NLCS. Following a day off for travel, the Pirates must hope that getting back to Three Rivers Stadium will change their fortunes.

Pittsburgh took an early 2-0 lead Sunday when Al Oliver delivered a second-inning home run.

Los Angeles, however, tied the game with a pair of runs in its half of the inning. Maury Wills and Bill Buckner each drove in a run.

The Dodgers grabbed a 3-2 lead with a third-inning run. Wes Parker knocked in the lead run with a ground out that scored Billy Grabarkewitz. The Dodger leadoff man was 4-for-4 with a stolen base in the game.

Johnny Jeter tied the game with a fifth-inning solo home run. Jeter started for the second game in a row because All-Star right fielder Roberto Clemente was still suffering from a sore wrist.

Yet, Los Angeles pushed across the eventual wininng run in the bottom of the sixth. Parker and Willie Crawford led off the inning with singles off Pittsburgh starter Dock Ellis.

However, the Pirates were on the verge of getting out of the inning unscored upon when Jim Lefebvre bunted into a double play. With Crawford on second base, Pittsburgh brought left-handed reliever Joe Gibbon to face Wills, a switch-hitter. Wills crossed up the strategy with a single that scored Crawford easily.

After Singer pitched a perfect seventh, Dodger relievers Ray Lamb and Jim Brewer breezed through the final two innings to preserve the victory. Clemente made the final out on a weak ground ball in a pinch-hitting appearance. The Pirates are hopeful Clemente will be able to start game three in Pittsburgh Tuesday.

The Pirates are expected to start either lefthander Bob Veale (19-14) or righty Bob Moose (18-14). The Dodgers will go with either right-hander Sandy Vance (20-9) or Don Sutton (24-11).

A Dodger win sends Los Angeles to the World Series.

Pitchers' Duel Ends as Wild Pitch Evens ALCS

Oakland, Calif.--It was like drawing a moustache on the Mona Lisa.

Bert Campaneris scored on a wild pitch to end what had been a fabulous pitching duel. The result was a 1-0 Oakland win, thus evening the American League Championship Series at one game apiece.

Starters Chuck Dobson for Oakland and Mike Cuellar for Baltimore pitched terrific baseball. In the end, the game was decided by each team's bullpen.

Paul Blair led off the Baltimore ninth by drawing a walk off Dobson. Davey Johnson followed with a sacrifice bunt. Closer Dooley Womack then relieved Dobson. As part of a flip-flop situation with the batting order, Jimmy Driscoll took over at second for the A's.

Baltimore countered with pinch-hitter Andy Etchebarren who hit a high pop that Driscoll dropped, putting runners on first and third with just one out.

Yet, Womack pitched around the mistake. Brooks Robinson lined out to Joe Rudi in shallow left field. Womack then struck out pinch-hitter Terry Crowley.

The good news for Oakland was that Cuellar was out of the game. The Oriole left-hander allowed just two hits and no walks in eight innings. He struck out five, including four straight late in the game.

Cuellar set his team up to score in the seventh with an infield single that loaded the bases. However, Dobson got pinch-hitter Bobby Grich to ground out.

Meanwhile, Driscoll made amends for his error by opening the A's ninth with a walk on four pitches from reliever Eddie Watt.

Attempting to bunt, Oakland's Bert Campaneris wound up forcing Driscoll at second. However, Tito Francona singled sharply to right. Campaneris drew a throw to third and Francona took second.

The Orioles decided to intentionally walk Sal Bando to load the bases and set up a possible inning-ending double play. With AL MVP candidate Reggie Jackson at the plate, Baltimore brought in left-hander Grant Jackson.

With a 2-2 count, the pitching Jackson ended the game by uncorking a fastball wide and into the dirt. Campaneris scampered home with the winning run.

After taking Monday off for travel, the series will resume Tuesday in Baltimore. The A's will send left-hander Al Downing (22-8) to the mound. The Orioles will pitch either game one winner Dave McNally (24-10) or right-hander Jim Palmer (11-8).

Clemente Returns to the Pirate Lineup for Game Three

Pittsburgh, Penn.--With the National League Championship Series shifting back to Three Rivers Stadium, the Pittsburgh Pirates will have All-Star right fielder Roberto Clemente back in the starting lineup.

Clemente missed the final three games of the regular season and the first two games of the NLCS with a wrist injury. The league Most Valuable Player candidate turned 36 Saturday, the opening game of the playoffs.

Clemente batted .324 with 26 home runs and 98 RBIs during the regular season for the Pirates. He made an appearance as a pinch-hitter in game two of the NLCS. Clemente grounded out weakly to end that contest.

The Pirates are down two games to none in the best-of-five series with Los Angeles.

Pirates Late Rally Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

Pittsburgh, Penn.--Don't count out the Pittsburgh Pirates just yet.

Down to their last at-bat against one of the best relief pitchers in the National League, the Pirates rallied for a 3-2 victory. Thus, Pittsburgh remains alive in the best-of-five NLCS.

Trailing 2-1 entering the last of the ninth, Pittsburgh took advantage of a little luck. With out one, pinch-hitter Bob Robertson blooped a pop fly into short left field. Three Los Angeles Dodgers converged on the ball, but none called for it and Robertson reached first with a single.

Still, the Dodgers appeared on their way to the World Series. Closer Jim Brewer got the inning's second out as Dave Cash flew out. Yet, Pirate catcher Manny Sanguillen singled, sending Robertson to third.

With the pitcher's spot in the order due, Pittsburgh called upon right-handed hitting Gene Clines to pinch-hit. Clines responded by doubling down the left-field line, scoring Robertson with the tying run. Only a strong relay by Los Angeles kept Sanguillen from scoring.

Brewer regrouped and struck out leadoff hitter Fred Patek to force extra innings.

After Los Angeles failed to score in the top of the 10th, Pittsburgh tallied the winning run. With one out Roberto Clemente, making his first start of the NLCS due to injury, singled up the middle. It was Clemente's third hit of the day.

Next, Clemente stole second and took third on a throwing error by Dodger catcher Bill Sudakis. With the infield drawn in, Willie Stargell singled home the game-winner.

Los Angeles took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning. Dodger starter Sandy Vance held Pittsburgh at bay for most of the game. Vance allowed just one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out four.

The Pirate victory leaves the Dodgers with a two-games-to-one NLCS lead. Game four will take place Wednesday at Three Rivers Stadium.

Deja Blue: A's Take Pivotal Game Three

Baltimore--It was a Blue Tuesday for both the A's and Orioles.

If you're for Oakland, that's a good thing. Baltimore? Not really the case.

A's left-hander Vida Blue outdueled Orioles southpaw Dave McNally in a rematch of game one as Oakland rallied to nip Baltimore 5-4. Oakland now holds a two games-to-one lead in the American League Championship Series.

Neither pitcher looked sharp in the first inning. Oakland took a 2-0 lead on a home run by Reggie Jackson. Baltimore tied the game on a two-run blast by Frank Robinson in the bottom half.

After the A's took a 3-2 lead on a third-inning sacrifice fly by Bert Campaneris, the Orioles grabbed the lead on a fourth-inning two-run homer by Merv Rettenmund.

From that point on, Blue took over the game. After pitching out of a sixth-inning, bases-loaded jam, the Oakland starter allowed no hits in the game's final three innings.

The A's pushed across the game-winning run in the top of the ninth. Jackson drew a base on balls to open the inning. On a perfectly executed hit-and-run, Gene Tenace then singled Jackson to third.

Relief pitcher Dick Hall entered the game and struck out Joe Rudi. However, pinch-hitter Rick Monday beat out a potential double-play ball to score Jackson.

While Baltimore failed to score in the bottom on the ninth, Oakland lost Rudi for the remainder of the post-season. The A's left fielder made a brilliant catch on a deep drive by Don Buford. After catching the ball, Rudi slammed into the left-center field fence and severely fractured his ribs.

An A's victory in game four will send Oakland to the World Series. Wednesday's starters have yet to be announced.
